[expert] multiple smbd spawning

2000-08-09 Thread hamkas

hi,
I'm using mandrake 7.1 and using samba-2.06. my problem is that
multiple smbd -D are spawning so much so that the server slows down
drastically. i've check the docs, logs and other mailing list they
mentioned it might be an NFS problem, rite i've disabled NFS and still
within an hour i can get anywhere between 10-20 smbd -D processes running.
Any one knows what can possible cause the smb daemon to spawn and spawn and
spawn?

thanxs in advance

I have been playing with SAMBA here with Linux and found that there are
known problemsGRIN with it. Recently Microsoft changed the algorithm used
to encrypt passwords(WinNT SP3) and SAMBA hasn't caught up with that. You
need to enable plain text passwords on your Windows machines and this
problem should go away.

See Microsoft technical articles #Q187228 and Q166730 for the registry
entries to enable plain text passwords.(which are not really plain text, but
that's another subject)

Here's the deal, I'm able to use gnomba to see the NT computer on the NT
network that I want to mount. I've got user access to this computer. But
when I give it my username and password, it refuses to let me in. So I
thought this might be a problem with gnomba and decided to use the smbmount
command. It gave back a positive name query response from the correct NT box

and then asked for a password. When I entered in the correct password for my

username I got the following response back:
session setup failed : ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (ACCESS denied.)
smbmount: login failed
Could not umount /mnt/share: Device or resource busy
smbmount: exit

Now /mnt/share is the directory I set up to mount the share directory from
the NT box. I'm guessing because of the previous errors the smbumount
command could not dismount this drive right away. Are my acces problems due
to my SAMBA or to the NT network I'm connected to?
I'm running Mandrake 6.1 on a 133 Mhz pentium DELL computer. Any Ideas?
Please don't say contact the SAMBA people because I am never able to get an
answer from them.
Thanx,
SA

Can this be caused by squid itself?

Hi everybody,

I have just installed MDK6.1 at work, and succesfully get the network
(LAN and Internet as well) working.

I have only one problem. If I am at the console, I have this error
message:

IP address sent an invalid ICMP error to a broadcast.

Because this message appears million times in every 10 seconds, it
makes impossible to work on the console. What causes this error,
and how I can get rid of it?! What is ICMP anyway?
If I could just suppress it, that would be fine, 'cause otherwise
everything works.

The actual IP address is a computer on my LAN network, none of
the computers I am dealing with ( I mean not the printer server, or
primary DNS, or something I specified in the setup)

Any help would be really appreciated...

Thanks : Viktor

[expert] Routing + multiple nics

1999-09-14 Thread hamkas

how do u configure the routing table to move all traffic from one nic to the
other and vice versa? I'm setting up a network traffic system where we need to
capture data going from our WAN to our LAN and vice versa. In short the linux
box is only suppose to route between eth0 and eth1 while eth2 is used for
telnetting.

i've put in route add -net network address subnetmask eth0 and route add
-net network address subnetmask eth1 it still doesn't route any traffic
between nics.

I'm using 2 3C509 and 1 3C905 nic. All the cards are up and running.

to
similar cards and uneed to separate out the irq/io.

in factt u can pass these arguments to lilo

 lilo: linux ether=irq #, io #, eth0 ether=irq #, io #, eth1

Appreciate it, but been there, done that.. It's in the how-to.. This is
the exact step that locked up
the machine.. After this, I had to boot into linux single and run

I was successfully running Mandrake 6.0 with no problems until I tried
to use linuxconf to add a second ethernet card, eth1, an Intel Pro/100.
When I tried to activate the changes the machine hung. I powered off
and now the boot process never gets beyond activating eth1. It hangs
there eternally (I let it stay there for about 12 hours once, just to
satisfy my curiousity).

Is there any way at the LILO prompt that I can get it to skip the eth1
initialization?

I'd rather not reinstall since I have put some time into the
customization of the machine.

Thanks in advance for the help!
