[expert] shorewall and microsoft pocket pc 2002 (ipaq)

2003-08-19 Thread manolis
Hi ,
I have a problem with my pocket pc 2002 and shorewall config.
I have opened the ports (990,5678,5679) and the pocket is working fine with
synce for linux!
I want to give to the pocket pc internet access through my firewall.
I am newbie in linux and had stuck in this point.
Here is my netowork:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:5A:F1:84:33
  inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
loLink encap:Local Loopback
  inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
  inet addr:213.249.11.159 P-t-P:213.249.11.190
 Mask:255.255.255.255 ppp1 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
  inet addr:192.168.131.102 P-t-P:192.168.131.201
vmnet8Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:56:C0:00:08
  inet addr:192.168.108.1 Bcast:192.168.108.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

the eth0 is my network card and vmnet8 is a virtual bridge for vmware.
I have given access to the internet both to my local netowrk and vmware
machines by adding in masq config file of shorewall the following:

#INTERFACE SUBNET ADDRESS
ppp+192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0

Well this works fine for network but no pocket pc with is ppp1 and it is at
mask 255.255.255.255

What line I have to add to masq file to give him access to internet
 addresses?

thank you in advance

Re: [expert] nVIDIA driver breaks X in 9.1

2003-07-25 Thread manolis
I had the same problem...
The module nvidia doesn't autoload the first time after the installatiion...
Go as root in terminal
and type :
modprobe nvidia
and then kde.
does it loads fine?
If yes I found that a good way to auto load it was to enter root again in
terminal and reinstall the driver again without removing it...
Sorry I didn't found any more delicate way but I am very newbie in linux...

  25 2003 17:59, / Ken Thompson :
 Howdy folks,
I installed the 4349 nVIDIA drivers yesterday and poof, no X. The Xserver
just cycled through opening to a background to console and back. After it
finally gave up there was a message about not being able to load
 glx.something-or-other.o
Any clues as to why?? I installed it just fine in 9.0. This 9.1 is a
standard install with updated through mandrake-update.

Re: [expert] slow samba

2003-06-19 Thread manolis
How they are connected?

In my home I have direct connection 100Mbps(reversed UTP) from a linuxpc to
winxp.
from WinXP I can read about 9MBytes/sec (50%network indication)
from the linuxPC I get about 2-3 MB/sec (20% network indication)
I have mandrake 9.1 with built it samba.
Seems that the linuxpc is 200% faster in transfer :)
When I had both of the with WinXP I was getting 20% network. :(

 Hi all,

Can anyone tell me why it's not possible to get a transfer speed of more
than 3 to 4 MBps when transferring files to or from a Windows file
server using a Linux client, or to or from a Samba server to a Linux
client, when you can get 8 to 9MBps when transferring files to or from a
Samba server using a Windows client?

Is this usual, or does it sound like I have something configured
 incorrectly?

 Which version of Winblows?

I'm using Windows 2000, but I'm having the same problem using a Linux
client. How do I check to see if full duplex is enabled under Linux?

 Sorry about the multiple posts.

Question here... is it a USB device? Really dirty way might be to do
/etc/init.d/usb stop before loading then /etc/init.d/usb start after
it's discovered. Don't have one to test this theory on ... just an
 idea.

yes it is a usb device.
I don't want to disable USB, I want to leave the device alone (it cannot be
used anyway) to use it with vmware machine.

 Manolis,

I'm not much into USB myself (don't have the cash for the toys I
really want.*grin*) However man hotplug or info hotplug could well be
your friend there is a file in /etc/hotplug called blacklist. My
understanding is that you can tell hotplug not to react to specific
devices here (in this case it would be the device Linux thinks you have
I believe you said it was a scanner.) then vmware handles it from
there. Since I don't have much in the way of USB here.

 http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net/

Is the website for hotplug more info might be there as well. But my
best opinion on this would be that hotplug would be the key since it
controls how usb devices are handled.

[expert] Vmware kai IPAQ

2003-06-11 Thread manolis
I installed vmware for linux in my mandrake 9.1.
I want to use it for eVC for pocketpc programming with my ipaq.

I have a problem:
sometimes the vmware machine when I plug in my ipaq doesn't respond quickly
and the device mounts itshelf in the hardware list of mandrake as scanner
(lol).
After that vmware responds that the device is being used by system and cannot
be locked for win98 virtual machine.
the question is how to prevent this? how can I disable the mounting of ipaq in
linux as scanner, or how do I unmount it simply?

thanks in advance...

I don't use the keyboard layouts of kde. Simply because it doesn't work. If I
install there greek layout as secondary layout I cannot write english. Iget

I use the option in mandrake control , hardware keyboard as you propose but
no luck.!

thanks for the concern/

After my installation of mandrake 9.1 I have one little problem.
I use the greek keyboard but I cannot enter punctuation notation marks
  on vowels.

Are you using the Greek keyboard layout? In big K, Configuration, Mandrake
 Control Centre, Hardware and Keyboard.

Though it has not happened for some time, I have had to use different
keyboard layouts to get the right one, even though it was not the one that
I thought would work? If the Greek layout doesn't work for you, try the US
or the US international. No guarantees, just trial and error. I have no
 need for Greek letters.
