Have you tried explicitly telling it to use (and check for) GTK when
running the configure script?

[expert] Compiling Vim-GTK

Hello!  I'm not really an expert or why would I ask these
questions.. however

I like to compile my own version of Vim - I need odd features like
right-to-left which aren't included in standard distributions.  With
Mandrake 6.1 it went like a breeze.

Having just installed Mandrake 7.0  I find that it will only produce a
stunted version of the Athena Gui, although the packaged Vim 5.5 works
well with the GTK gui.

I suspect there is something awry with some of the symbolic links but
am not clever enough to work out which!  Has anyone already solved this
problem?
