Since u refer to ftp, can I assume that it makes a local copy,
and then when u r finished editing it, it "put"s the file back
to the remote host? I say this because without nfs/samba, how
would the local editor know how to process the file unless
it were tempirarily local?

Ron

I'm so looking forward to KDE2.0. Konqueror is shaping up to be like the IE of
Linux and Kmail like Outlook Express. Then there's KOffice as well, hopefully
replacing the bloated Star Office on my desktop. If Konqeror can do Java
without all the crashing Netscape does it'll be invaluable. :) Hats off to the
entire KDE team.

You can either do whata Tony suggested, or KDE 2.0 has total network
transparancy.. so u can ftp from konqueror to any remote machine and then
just click on the icon of any file to edit!

Re: [expert] GUI Editor needed for remote computer

You could set up a NFS share on a remote machine to save the files to and use a
GUI editor on the local system. I'm not exactly sure how to do this so you'll
need to refer to other documentation. This would have the effect of only
letting you save files into a certain part of the filesystem tree.

If that's not what you want, alternatively if you're connected to the remote
machine via telnet you can have the window of a program show up in X windows on
another machine by typing 'export DISPLAY=192.168.0.5:0 where the 192.168.0.5
is replaced with the IP address of the local machine running the X server. Then
just run the program by typing 'cooledit &' for example and you get to keep
working in your telnet session and the cooledit window shows up on the local
system. If there are authentication problems, see 'man xhost' to add the remote
machine to your local X access list.

[expert] GUI Editor needed for remote computer

2000-09-13 Thread LINK WORLD

Dear expert,

I have 4 networked system running Mandrake 7.0. I need to use a gui based editor
lile 'cooledit' or 'codecommander' to edit & save files on remote machines. I
find VI or VIM to tedious to use. can you help?
