have had to install the DSL modem to my windows machine. My linux and
Winboxes are connected using a hub. My problem is that
my linux box does not see the internet. I have only the two boxes. One
is
win98 the other is Linux.

W98 is incapable of acting as a router or firewall without 3rd party
software.

The best solution is to get the modem working on the Linux box. W98 is
hideously insecure, and you are probably in effect sharing a network with
other DSL users in your area. This leaves your W98 box open to cracking.

I have configured as follows:
Linux::
eth0: IP is 192.168.0.254
Net mask is 255.255.255.0
Gateway is 192.168.0.2
Name server is set to earthlink.net
with the three ip address of their DNS servers.
The winbox is configured as follows:
The Tcp/IP card:
IP is set to 192.168.0.2
Netmask is 255.255.255.0
Wins Resolution is disabled
Gateway is blank
DNS is disabled.

Are you sure DNS is disabled?

Bindings are:
Client for MS networks
File and Print Sharing
MS Family log on
IPX/SPX
Can anyone help me correct what is wrong and get my linux box to the
internet.
By the way the DSL modem is a Fujitsu Speedport and the Win box uses
WinPoET

the internet for email and updating. Thanks in advance for your help.

WinPoet is a PPPoE (Point to Point over Ethernet) client, you need a
PPPoE client working on your Linux box since that is what your ISP is
using. PPPoE is like having a dialup connection to an ethernet device,
in this case, your DSL modem. I also have DSL with PPPoE.

There is a Linux PPPoE client that is infinitely better than WinPoet by
Roaring Penguin that you can find at www.roaringpenguin.com.This
client works great and has good documentation as well as RPMs. Also,
I'd suggest dumping WinPoet on your Windows box, that thing is a piece
of garbage. Get Rob Schlabbach's PPPoE freeware for Windows at
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/.

Also, as a suggestion, you might want to check out www.dslreports.com
that has all sorts of information about DSL and great ways to tweak your
service. It also has lots of information about PPPoE that might be
helpful to know.

Happy hunting,

Guy

  Charles:
Thanks for your reply. Could you be more explict as to what I have to do
 to
the Win box network card and the Linux box card to get this working. I
am
still new to Linux and not a net working genius. Thanks in advance.

If all you are wanting is to share your internet connection the
 easiest
way would be to set each system to use DHCP. that way you would not
have
  to
   configure anything.
My DSL modem also does not work in linux so I use DHCP to connect
my
   linux system to the internet.

If you want a Networking genius I am the wrong person to be talking.
I will offer what help that I can.

In Windows my NIC has the following Bindings
   Internet Connection Sharing (protocol)
   IPX/SPX-compatable Protocol
   Net BEUI
   TCP/IP
And in Advanced it is set to Auto-Detect

As to the Linux side during the Mandrake installation when it asked if
I
wished to configure a Network I selected DHCP. Once the installation
completed and I booted Linux I was able to connect to the internet without
having to manually enter any settings so I am afraid that I can not tell
you
exactly what to do on a system that is already up and running.
I do know that you will need to install the DHCP RPMs from the
installation CD because they are not installed by default.
The only other help I can give is to list my settings as shown in
Network
 Configuration.
 Basic Host/ Adapter 1:
   Enabled
   Basic ConfigDHCP
   Netmask..255.255.255.0
   Net Device...eth0
   Kernel mod..tulip
 Name Server Spec:
DNS usage...DNS required for normal op
   IP of name server 1..192.168.0.1
   search1.localdomain
 IPX Interface Setup/Config:
   Auto configure... Primary
   Auto configure... interfaces frame types

I hope this will be of some use to you and I am sorry that I could not be
of
 more help.
