Re: [expert] Kernel 2.4.7 release date
After messing with this stuff until 05:00 this morning, I noticed some things that I hope will have been fixed before the real 8.1 ships. On a box with only SCSI disks, if one goes into 'rescue' mode with either 7.2 or 8.0, it'll for some reason realise there's a reiserfs filesystem on the disks, but it won't load the appropriate kernel modules so one can actually hit that drive. It doesn't probe the SCSI bus(ses) and load the module for the adapter it finds and depending on what devices are attached, it fails to load their drivers. I had to bust out my RH 6.2 disk and it did it all perfectly (except didn't have reiserfs support so I was screwed there). Anyway, that's my little sleep deprivation rant. Anyone on the list know if these issues are resolved in the 8.1 beta series? Re: [expert] Kernel 2.4.7
The main reason for initrd's is not filesystems. There aren't that much important filesystems the kernel must know before loading modules and they can easily be build into the kernel itself. The reason are more the SCSI-Controllers, Network card (for network boot). Since the kernel must have these drivers to be able to boot the system. I don't think that has anything to do with the |software manager, but who knows. All I know is that when I |updated with these RPMs, my system would not boot (see the |archives with my posts in the last week or so). RE: [expert] Kernel 2.4.7
Eh, AFAIK not so. The software manager will download the upgraded RPM if used correctly. I had no trouble going to 2.4.8-12mdk via the installer. It "lilo'd" my system properly as well and picked up the PBM and other libraries needed for recompilation, since I requested that the headers and sources be installed too. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Harold Hartley |Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2001 9:21 AM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: Re: [expert] Kernel 2.4.7 | | |do not use the software manager to install it. |you need to install it manually... |instructions are on mandrake or pclinuxonline.com somewhere.. | |Harold | |On Wednesday 05 September 2001 05:01 pm, you wrote: |> I used the software manager to upgrade my kernel from 2.4.3 to 2.4.7. |> |> I noticed the new files in my /boot directory, except the |> initrd-2.4.7*img file. |> |> Do I have to change the links to point to the new kernel or |should the |> software installer have done that for me? |> |> -Scott | | |Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"; name="message.footer" |Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit |Content-Description: | | | BEGIN:VCARD VERSION:2.1 N:Sanchez;Jose;M FN:Jose M Sanchez ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) ORG:Net Results, Inc.;Lan Support TITLE:Lan Support TEL;WORK;VOICE:301-972-8271 TEL;HOME;VOICE:301-972-8507 TEL;CELL;VOICE:301-502-0151 TEL;WORK;FAX:301-349-2201 TEL;HOME;FAX:301-349-2201 ADR;WORK:;301-972-8271;17206 Spates Hill Road;Poolesville;Maryland;20837;United States LABEL;WORK;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:301-972-8271=0D=0A17206 Spates Hill Road=0D=0APoolesville, Maryland 20837= =0D=0AUnited States ADR;HOME:;;17206 Spates Hill Road;Poolesville;Maryland;20837;United States LABEL;HOME;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:17206 Spates Hill Road=0D=0APoolesville, Maryland 20837=0D=0AUnited States URL: URL:http://opjose.homeip.net EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:[EMAIL PROTECTED] REV:20010825T134515Z END:VCARD Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] Kernel 2.4.7
Hi Scott, Many distribution are very confuse (foolish), most distribution need this kind of file to load something in RAM first to function , e.g. some type of file systems, but the kernel of 2.4.7 seems not need to load some modules first and already bundled in, e.g. reiserfs file system, you should check. I tried many (over 10) famous distributions of Linux, nearly no one help to create this file, a command mk_initrd or mkinitrd should do so, but need manualy to do. Wonder, these distribution are all contain document in their web site teach people about early modules loading process and to use these 2 commands. Except specially build the post-install steps, rpm natively not create this file, it is realy surprise me before. Don't think you can create back initrd.img file after reboot if not previous create. Nowaday, harddisk is much cheaper , just install new kernel and update lilo/grub and make initrd.img, don't upgrade/replace the working kernel. Even just update/upgrade some simple packages will cause the system problems. Do you know something we do not, and would you like to share your thinking on this matter. With all the later kernel versions out there, I am just wondering if this kernel, 2.4.7-12.3mdk, is a bit more stable. I have installed the 8.1 beta2 version, and upgraded to the 2.4.8-18mdk kernel version. I am getting some unexplained X server crashes, and I am not sure why. I also have the NVIDIA chip on my graphics card, and these crashes may be related to this situation, and not the kernel at all. Dan, on a related issue, would you tell me which driver you went with for your NVIDIA Video Card? Are you using Mandrake's "nv" driver or did you use the NVIDIA driver? Are you still having any trouble with your X Server and or display while using the Mandrake beta2? Thanks to all, drjung -- J. Re: [expert] Kernel 2.4.7
Thanks a bunch for this tip. That indeed was the problem. I did have a ram disk in /boot that was symlinked properly, but it was for the 2.4.2 kernel, so that caused problems. When I created one specifically for the 2.4.3-20mdk kernel, that one was able to boot up fine. For some reason though, both the 2.4.3 and 2.4.7 kernel RPMs didn't provide a ramdisk? Why is that? I still don't know why the RPMs didn't finish their job with updating symlinks. Maybe my system has other problems. It's an 8.0beta system (probably the last beta) that I upgraded to 8.0 release. I wasn't able to use the 8.0 release for a fresh install since it had problems that the beta didn't (I have an nVidia video card). I don't recall all the problems I ran into, other than the video problem and the fact that the installer insisted on me using lilo even though I specifically requested grub, and actually was using grub during the beta process. On a related note, why does Mandrake use symlinks in /boot in the first place? It seems much more logical to point lilo (or grub) to the specific ram disk, vmlinuz, etc. Doing symlinks just seems like the perfect way to get yourself into lots of trouble with version mismatches, especially when you have multiple kernels installed. I sincerely doubt it had anything to do with reiserfs. The machines that I updated the kernel on (using commandline rpm with -ivh) all have reiserfs partitions and none of them exhibited the same behaviour you previously described. Links in /boot were created properly and /etc/lilo.conf was updated properly. In fact, all it took was running "/sbin/lilo -v" after the fact and I rebooted without issue and have been using it since... this is on my workstation, a production webserver, and a laptop. So...does kernel 2.4.7-12mdk have supermount support in it yet? This is the kernel for Cooker at the moment. Up til now, supermount hasn't been in 2.4.6 or higher. Does anyone know if it has made it into 2.4.7-12mdk?

I think I blew up a LM 7.2 kernel source install beyond recovery by doing a make mrproper. I cannot guarantee that's what did it, but here's what I do know: 1 - I think I'd built an SMP kernel for the machine and installed it. 2 - I fiddled around a while with hardware problems with IRQ conflicts (trying to get parallel port to be irq driven, and with getting my ethernet card to work). 3 - I changed ethernet cards back to 3c509 4 - I fiddled around some more. 5 - I saved the . files in /usr/src/kernel*, did a make mrproper, and tried to config and build a new kernel. I had lost a critical file (I forget the name right now, but if anyone wants to know I can go find it). I tried rpm -i --force the kernel parts again (source, headers, and something else I think), no joy. So, I decided to just be lazy and re-install the entire system (since I had a spare partition and since I'd not done anything important to that machine yet anyway ;-). So you see there's a lot of places where I coulda blown something up, but next time I'm going to tar cf myself a copy of my linux source tree before I do a make mrproper! and, of course: YMMV!!! rc Rusty E. Re: [expert] KErnel 2.4.7
As of now there is no 2.4.7 kernel from Mandrake - I downloaded it from kernel.org after another in this list told me supermount was in it and working. He was mistaken...perhaps not knowing what supermount was/is. I even tried transfering the supermount "stuff" from my 2.4.3-20mdk source directory to my 2.4.7 directory but it didn't work. There is no supermount to be found when running the make (x)config step. Other than that, I have a configured 2.4.7 source sitting here that I am not going to build until I manage to get supermount patched into it. I did go without supermount for a while after trying the Mandrake cooker 2.4.6 kernel but it was a big pain in the ass so I went back to 2.4.3-20mdk. I guess I'll stick with for a while... Re: [expert] KErnel 2.4.7
Supermount is not quite the same. It takes autofs a step further. If you read up on the patch information you will see that many think it is a great feature and many hope that it will make it into the kernel proper rather than be a patch. Supermount makes using the supermount volume absolutely painless in all ways. If you place a cd into your supermount cdrom and then just cd to the /mnt/cdrom drive and do an "ls" or whatever, it automagically mounts and lists what's there. You can then, if you wish, simply hit the eject button and it will actually eject the cd (unmounting it automagically) without complaining about it being mounted or requiring you to manually unmount it first. The same goes with zip drives, floppies, and so forth. For a game, for instance, in which you may have multiple cds to exchange when playing, this is a godsend. You simply hit the eject button and pull out the old cd and stick in the new one and close the drawer. Done. No system complaints, no extra typing or other steps. It is a huge convenience and keystroke or mousestroke saver to use supermount. Saying that this is of no value is the same as saying that there is no value to GUIs or to using/having mice/trackballs, etc, and so forth. If you can save keystrokes, etc, and ease the actual use and speed of using your system, it is a good thing. Supermount does this beyond what autofs can do. The kernel mailing list has messages in it calling for supermount to be incorporated into the kernel rather than supplied as an addon patch. One of the features common to Mandrake releases (except for recent Cooker versions) is supermount. Here is a message from Alan Cox regarding supermount - somewhat dated because a supermount patch was produced for the 2.4.0 kernel and Mandrake has used it in their 2.4.0 thru 2.4.4 kernels (don't know about 2.4.5): Alan Cox wrote: > > Is there any possibility of making Linux handle file systems on > > floppies like MSDOS, so that there is no need to explicitly mount and > > unmount a floppy drive in order to access floppies through the file > > system? > There is a thing called 'supermount'. The stuff needed is > out there however Supermount DOES belong in the kernel, not as a special addon patch. It should actually be a default behavior for any desktop-like system. There may be many valid arguments against it for servers, certainly, but beyond that? No. On Saturday 28 July 2001 12:12 pm, DM wrote: > how is supermount different from autofs? > doesnt autofs/automounter achieve the same thing? > and yes, there is really no option for supermount on > the new kernel. > > --- Praedor Tempus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Err...unfortunately, supermount support does not > > exist in this kernel. I was glad to see that there was a built in module for my new networkcard (rtl), but after i'm made 'make mrproper' this option disappers. it wasn't available whether in menuconfig nor xconfig. xconfig shows always some strange behaviour, espacially when i try to save/load a special config. maybe its cause i have the old source-tree in /usr/src, i dont know. for my soundcards i always use alsa, it dont needs any kernelmodules built in. Re: [expert] KErnel 2.4.7
hi supermount is a pseudo-filesystem which manages filesystems on removable media like floppy disks and CD-ROMs. i think that enabling support for CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS while compiling the kernel will enable support for such. dianne --- Praedor Tempus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Can't answer the sound question - except ARE the > modules actually in their > appropriate location? Can't answer the sound question - except ARE the modules actually in their appropriate location? Other than the "make modules && make modules_install" bit just mentioned. What I really want to know is does the 2.4.7 kernel have supermount support available to it? just curious, did you make modules and make modules_install after the compile of the kernel? --- "Leonardo T. de Carvalho" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Hi all. > > I've got a 2.4.7 kernel up and runnig yesterday (on > the 2nd try! > =o) ) and got some odd problems. > The sound card (ESS 1688) stopped working... > Using sndconfig (harddrake didn't care about it > anymore), > I got the nifty sound sample (...), but when running > the > MIDI sample, > I got this: > > > The following error occurred running the > modprobe program: > > > /lib/modules/2.4.7/kernel/drivers/sound/opl3.o: > init_module: > No such device > > /lib/modules/2.4.7/kernel/drivers/sound/opl3.o: > insmod > /lib/modules/2.4.7/kernel/drivers/sound/opl3.o > failed > /lib/modules/2.4.7/kernel/drivers/sound/opl3.o: > insmod midi > > failed > > > > In spite of the modules all getting Ok, the MIDI > can't get up. > Any hints? > > > > > > -- > Leonardo T. de Carvalho > Ibiz Tecnologia > Frase aleatória: > "Are we live or on tape? > " > > > __ Do You Yahoo!?
