Whups, I guess I should have said "high quality" or
whatever the term is, for the best put together
graphics apps besides Gimp which I enjoy using.

I sorta wonder how he determined that it was the mandrake patches
preventing compilation.

I did not see any evidence that he tried "kernel-linus" for
example.

Suse is the one distro that has the real good
high res graphics isnt it?

When I am looking for a new video driver I go to Suse's site,
they always seem to have the latest in video drivers.

Well, I'm not saying he shouldn't try something else, I just think it
was kinda poor taste to ask about other distros to try in the
Mandrake list. This sort of question belongs (IMNSHO) in a "generic"
Linux list. Just my $0.02 worth.

I disagree ... let the guy try another distro ... he may or may not come
back to Mandrake, but he'll still be using LINUX!

So my friend, a distro I would recommend is SuSE. I use both Mandrake
and SuSE and I find both of them equally superior to any other distro
out there .. (Mandrake on the computer at home, and SuSE on my laptop).

Thanks Tom,
I started out a few years ago with SLACKWARE 3.6. Got it running, put a lot
of HAM radio stuff on it, a couple of BBS's, Chat server etc etc., sat back
and let it run. Now its time to change some stuff around, I have forgotten
what little I ever knew and am basically srarting from scratch. Seems that
wit one little caveat 2.2.13-22mdk compioles as expected. I'll keep my eyes
open for 7.0 next time I'm in the store!!

Hmm...you're on a MANDRAKE list, bitching about the
MANDRAKE kernel? Might I suggest you either grab a generic
kernel and make a new config from scratch (make clean, make
menuconfig/make xconfig, etc)
If you don't like the way Mandrake compiles their kernels,
then go ahead and switch to a different distro, but it's
kinda in poor taste to come asking on this list about a
distro to switch to from Mandrake!

I started with redhat 6.0 and then moved to 6.1 when it came out last
fall. It was very good. Then I tried Mandrake 6.1 and found it was a lot
of fun playing with kde. Mucked around with debian but found it a little
out of date for my hardware, although my system admin offspring swears
by debian - its really for the pure in heart. But then along came
Mandrake 7.0 and lo and behold its works really great on my Dell Laptop
with the ESS Maestro sound card at the getgo and also on my dual celeron
smp with sblive sound card and it all functions perfectly. Mandrake 7.0
kicks butt. Hang out here and you can find out how to solve the "silly"
problems and you'll be a stud muffin in no time.

SORRY folks, my outlook express got away from me. Hence the quick burst of
HTML that spewed forth. At leat it proves that the messages are read I
got more responses on the HTML format, than on the original question, but at
least I have learnt that the problem appears to be with Mandrakes rendition
of the kernel.

Are there any "recomended" Linux packages out there ie Corel, Slackware
etc??

Thanks again for the input.
