How strange. There's nothing wrong with the sound functionality in my system, e.g. music and DVD playback work fine as do all the system sound effects. I've tried fiddling with the various modem parameters in kppp, like dialing speed and such, but that doesn't change anything. The funny thing is that the number actually dialed seems to be the same every time, e.g. my local ISP's number is 5625-6300 and the number actually dialed is 679-3500 (which happens to be the number to the Grand Hotel - I hear the words Welcome to the Grand Hotel in the modem speaker :-)). The number of digits which actually get dialed are more like 10, but the phone switch disregards the extra ones at the end. The country setting in my /etc/modules.conf is correct (Sweden). How can 5625 6300 become 679 3500 plus extras? No logic to that... Found a little article on linmodems.org that helped me solve the problem. I was running version 2.7.14 of the Smartlink modem drivers, and apparently this version "fixed a bug" that allowed the software to work with some compatible but not original Smartlink drivers. I went back to version 2.7.10 of the driver and that solved my problem. What I also found was that kppp doesn't pick up a DNS address from the ISP - I had to enter that manually in the "accounts" tab.
