Gentlemen...please lets all go to our respective corners and when the bell rings, I want to see a clean fight... no misspeeeled words, and no complaining about mis-spelled words. no complaining about being on or off topic, and last of all..no "tongue in cheek wise a$$ remarks". Oh, yes, no mono or poly-syllabic words. On Tuesday 25 September 2001 22:03, Galileo wrote: > Kari> G> Looks like some people are to edgy. 30 years in a busines ? wow, Kari, I am impressed with your ability to discern the level of (?relative?) education from a few e-mails. very impressive. could you extrapolate (possibly off list?) on how you where able to determine "ignorance". (of course I wuld ask you to not consider the obvious such as the lack of a "speeel checkerer" and why the hack would anyone want to open a good modem, beats me) And since you been in the business for 30 years, what did a modem look like 30 years ago? I remember the rooms where "saltynet" was the (secret) codename for the part of DARPA-net in Germany, that later became the german backbone of what I now call the internet, but that was not quite 30 years ago, (more like 23) and the "modem" was somwhat of a "different" beast than what I use today, I bet they made a lot of headway in getting it to demod in a smaller space in those seven years. n Tuesday 25 September 2001 19:08, you had thoughts to the concept of: > This is a forwarded message > From: Kari Suomela <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Date: 25 September, 2001, 18:08:23 > Subject: [expert] Modem question > > ===8<==Original message text=== > > Tuesday September 25 2001 03:24, Galileo wrote to Kari Suomela: > > > G> If you have any knowledge in electronics yust do the foloing: > G> Open up an external modem and look whats inside and then look at > G> the > > I've only been in the business for over 30 years, so what do I know! > > G> The cheapest modems are "pci winmodems" the pci hardware modems the > G> old style isa hardware and then external modems. If you have any knowledge in electronics yust do the foloing: Open up an external modem and look whats inside and then look at the pci modem. Everything will be clear to you. Also there is another approach: The cheapest modems are "pci winmodems" the pci hardware modems the old style isa hardware and then external modems. Why do you think external modems are the most expensive ones ? Yust because they have their one power source and serial interface to a serial ( com) port? Excuse me for my bad English. P.C. Sure do (have experience, that is). I was on the support desk of a national ISP for a while, and most customers with modem issues (as opposed to s/w, system stuff and the like) had internal PCI modems. PCI tend not to have their own data pump chip, no telephone out port, and (obviously) rely on the computer;s power supply -- john in syd Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Often more convenient to use because because of lack of extra box, cable, & power supply. This applies to those who have one or few machines. If you have multiple machines or go through them quickly, or if your supply of phone jacks is something short of ideal, an external can give you a whole lot more flexibility at lower cost. How many PCI slots do you have? Can you afford to waste one on a lowly modem, something for which the PC has already provided via the built in serial ports? Put in Sound, NIC, SCSI, & Firewire. Do you have any PCI slots left? Getting one set up in the first place is no task for the less fully clued. PC compatible machines have IRQ/address limitations that make for conflicts for the unskilled installer. > I guess the one thing about an external modem is the indicator lights, > but software exists to display them on the CRT for an internal modem. More that just indicator lights. If the modem or your net connection go fubar, you can hit the modem power switch to reset and/or hangup faster than you can find the dialer window to exit, which you can't do or do quickly either if your desktop has gone fubar. Can't you reach the back of your PC to force a hangup? If you don't buy a cheap external, you get infinite volume control instead of 0 1, 0 1 2, or 0 1 2 3 volume choice settings through software only. One thing is for sure, if a modem is an external device with legacy serial hookup, you are guaranteed it does not require windoze. -- "The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity."President John Quincy Adams Felix Miata *** http://mrmazda.members.atlantic.net/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? George Jones (IT) wrote: > Does it absolutely have to be PCI? External modems work far better. George, Do you have some experience that says external modems work better? For what reason? In my experience, internal modems work very well (as long as they are not winmodems), and are sometimes much more convenient to use. I guess the one thing about an external modem is the indicator lights, but software exists to display them on the CRT for an internal modem. I've always had good luck with USR (U.S. Robotics), sportsters, & Zoom. Both are reasonable in cost, and never had a compatibility problem with them.
