The problem is not the servers. The problem is the client.
Outlook is the problem here, not the servers.
Why companies use outlook is another issue. They use it because they
believe they have to. The features that they want are calendars and shared
folders integrated into the mail client.
Sounds like a job for Evolution!
Exchange is also a piece in this puzzle. You want to replace that as
well. IMAP and ical will replace much of the functionality of Exchange
without the data corruption problems.
I don't see why people choose Microsoft at all. The cost per seat is
prohibitive, when you do the math. The reliability is vague, at best.
You can't replace hardware without having to reinstall the entire OS. You
can't mount non-MS partitions or media. You are limited to a single
desktop. It requires much more hardware to run. (And lots of single
function machines scattered about for PDCs, BDCs, WINS, etc.)
And you have to worry about law enforcement people coming in and shutting
your company down if you are running something "unauthorized".
Screw that! I'm running Linux!
