Missed much of this discussion; but any chance you have Call Waiting on
that line...? If so, there is usually a per-call code you can use to
  disable it... *70 or somesuch...

Thanks for your reply, I do not have call waiting. The problem is strange in
that in the middle of downloading mail the transfer as seen on the graph goes
to zero and then I get an error message with error 16 (modem disconnected)
from kppp. The same happens when transferring updates. I just do not know
 what to try next.

OK... other strange things I've seen:

1. features other than call-waiting may interrupt the line momentarily; if you
hear any strange sounds/silence while using the phone line normally, that would
be a clue.

2. had 2 lines, everytime other line rang, modem would drop... found a staple
through the phone cable which now had a carbon path due to a lightning storm --
was fine before the storm.

etc...

Does the line drop after a specific amount of time, or at specific times? Say x
minutes after starting a transfer, or always at y minutes past the hour...? In
this sort of situation, it sometimes helps to have extra stats available...
keep a log of start time, activity, drop time, etc. If you don't have any luck
finding the problem through normal means, analysis of these stats may show some
commonality which might help...

Cconnections are usually dropped by one of:
- interruption in the line
- ISP dropping
  - lack of [perceived] activity (misconfiguration at ISP?)
  - enforcing fair access when all lines busy (ISP policy*)
- bad cables/connectors
  - try proding your cables and connectors to see if that causes the line to
drop
- bad card/modem bouncing DTR, DSR or CXR
  - a 1ms bounce is enough to cause problems
- need a scope to find this one...

* ISP really needs more lines

HTH,
Pierre

well, I am not sure about the effect it has in kppp, but in /etc/ppp/options
you can add a statement for IDLE=xxx (where xxx is seconds so 300 would be 5
min. I know this works with demand dialing. are you sure the ftp download
did not time out before the disconnect? sometimes if there is an incomming
call, before the Phone Co centeral office answering service picks up it is a
long enough time of inactivity to time out the server I am connected to.
