Is that "minicom" you're talking about? Yes, that's "minicom". Once you've connected to the modem, you could issue AT commands to test it. As a side thought, since the modem is connected already to the computer, and minicom is launched within a terminal (virtual or not) in the same computer, I won't describe this as "dialing to the modem from a terminal (screen)" (sic), but I would rather say "connect to the modem from a terminal". For more info about how to use minicom, consult Modem Howto.

Neat. You answered your own question and helped me too. Thanks. Pj
Re: [expert] Problems with modem
Pjto do that bring up the kppp window and instead of pressing the Connect button, press the Setup button. Choose the Modem tab and press the Terminal button. There you are in a terminal and able to talk directly to your modem. Alan Pj wrote: One of the advantages to having an external modem is the ability to reset it without rebooting. Re: [expert] Problems with modem
This sounds like a RTFM problem. PJ: Consult the Modem HowTo. It discusses how to test and setup modems. If you are stuck without Internet access, there should be a copy of it installed on your system somewhere or on the Mandrake CDROM. [expert] Problems with modem
I'm sending this email to both lists, not sure of the best place. I sometimes get into a state with kppp when I try to connect that it tells me "Sorry. modem is not responding". The only way I can cleat this up is to reboot, so it's obvious that I have to do a hard reset to the modem. Is there anyway I can do this without rebooting, just through the command line?
