Win98 for games that won't run under anything else, NT
for work, and Linux for fun. Notice Linux is 4/5 of my

Another M$ feature - Win 9x can use FAT16 or FAT32, Win NT can use FAT16
or NTFS, so if you want to run both, you need to use FAT16 at least on a
common partition, BUT FAT16 is so damn inefficient on large drives
>~500Mb. I would suggest using 3 partitions: FAT32 for Win9x, NTFS for
NT, and a 500Mb FAT16 partition for storing common fiiles or
transferring files. This means that neither OS can see the other's
files, and therefore can't trash them! But, then, do you really need
both NT and Win9x on the same box??? We have an NT domain at work, but
I use my Win95 box to administer it from home - most functions work OK.
As we also have terminal server setup on one of the NT servers, I can
use it for those times when I need to use NT, or the modem is to slow.
We also use VNC, for which there is a Linux version, so soon, perhaps, I
will be able to do all the NT admin from my Linux box - one step closer
to a M$-free household!

I've noticed that about Windows, but I thought that was supposed to be a

I ended up with a 7M /boot partition, 2 - 2G FAT16
partitions (Win98 & NT tend to screw up each other's
"Program Files" directories when on the same
partition) and a 16G / partition. So far, they're all
happy (except Win98 seems to like corrupting its own
space frequently, but I already knew that).

100M? You can easily use 1/10 of that for /boot.
Heck, I use just 64M for /.
(I have /usr, /tmp, /var, /home, and /usr/local in separate partitions,
though.)

You really don't need 100MB, if you use the Mandrake installer, you can set the
size of the boot partition with that. I would go maybe 20MB which is, as you
said, plenty. From there, go ahead and do your install of Mandrake, then do
Windows, and just use your Linux boot disk that you created on install to boot
Linux again, configure lilo.conf like so:

boot=/dev/hdaN (where N equals the partition number)
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=linux(or windows if you prefer)
keytable=/boot/us.klt
message=/boot/message
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hdaN
append=""
read-only
other=/dev/hdaN
label=windows
table=/dev/hda

You can type whatever you want for the labels, and you'll have to give the
correct partition number for your OS's so that lilo can find them. (If you make
/boot your first partition it will be /dev/hda1 and so on; the Master boot record
is not the same as /boot, it's hidden from you so you don't count it as a
partition number)
Then save and exit, find a terminal window and type 'lilo' so that lilo sees the
changes, and reboot your computer.

Umm... Ok. I'll bite. Why so large? It's only going to hold the kernel and
system map, etc. That's a grand total of under a meg. Even using FDISK, I

One thing you might try if you wish to install Mandrake first is to create a
partition (~100 MB) and name it's mount point "/boot". You would have another
(larger) partition with the mount point "/". Be sure to create a bootdisk for
your system when the option appears. Then, during the LILO configuration,
choose to install LILO on the first sector of the boot partition (NOT the MBR).
Complete the install, but you will not be able to boot into Mandrake via the

Running LILO worked. Oddly enough, after I got Win98
and Mandrake both running, I added NT and it behaved
properly - it didn't screw up the linux boot, so I now
have linux, Win98, and NT all happily sharing the same

Yes it does... wintendo always want to be the first...!

What I have done, is install win98 win95 or whatever version of M$ first...
then install
linux second... that actually works.

Another thing I've done sometimes is install wintendo in the first hd (as
supposed)
then move that hd drive as second hd (hdb) and then install linux in the
second hd (hda)
and installing LILO to take care of the boot process.

After linux has started modified the lilo conf and add the wintendo in
(hdb)
then add the entry in fstab so you can have access to your files in
/wind errr whatever.

I hope this helps, I have used both of these approaches and both work. LILO
takes care
of the dual boot nicely.

Yes, Windows (any version) will overwrite the MBR on install, you just
install Windows first or reinstall lilo after installing another OS and
problem will be solved.

I could be wrong, but I believe that Windows writes its boot loader to
the first active partition (usually c: or hda1). In your case, this is
also the linux boot partition, hence your problem. If the other

Annoying isn't it?! Windows automatically assumes that it's the only kid on
the block and overwrites your Master boot record when you install. Anyway,
just stick your rescue disk (the one you made when you installed your
system) in and reboot; when you get back into Linux, you can configure your
lilo.conf file (found under /etc) to reflect your dual boot situation and
then run the command 'lilo' from the prompt and you should be good to go.

If you have an emergency boot floppy, boot from it. It will boot with the
boot disk as the floppy, but the root as your hard drive. When you're up
and logged in, do '/sbin/lilo'.

[expert] Re-installing LILO after Win98

2000-03-27 Thread Mage Grimau

I'm trying to get my machine to dual-boot Win98 and
linux. After I install linux (have to do it first or
the partitioning doesn't work right) I installed
Win98. Then I tried to use my linux boot disk to
reload LILO, but it says "/dev/hda1 has no boot
record" and quits without doing anything useful.
/dev/hda1 is the 7M partition I mount as /boot. I
assume I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure
out what (besides adding Win98, that is).
