transmits packets... and becarefull of what you see >:) if not, er... may

Is it a network problem of an Internet Exploder problem? Can you ping the
relevant sites? If not, and they are NT sites, they may have ICMP shut off
to avoid a bug in NT 4 SP0-SP4. If they are Unix/Linux sites, ICMP should
be working, which would suggest a lower level problem with your computers
under W98.

Which browser? I know I have problems with Netscape under Linux because
some japlets written with M$ J++ appear to have some bugs that crash
Netscape.

OK, we all want to get away from windoze, but some of us can't (yet)!

John, so many possibilities & so little info. Firstly, I'm sure you've done this
already,
but lets do it again: check your settings CAREFULLY to make sure they are the same on
both
systems - I had a similar problem (except the other way around - Linux hanging ) and
found
that I had mistyped one of the DNS entries - very easy to do, and since it was
similar, I
looked at it several times before I saw the error.

Other than that - tell us how you connect & give us something to work with - email
privately
if you don't want to further upset those who have successfully got M$ out of their
systems

Hmmm, first, are other things equal? Are we talking about
netscape in both instances?

If we are, then use www.dogpile.com or something similar to find
a handy little .exe called
ie-off.exe

It disables the internet explorer code in memory, allowing
Windoze to run about 30% faster, and is a toggle available all
the time to turn IE on or off. Try those sites with IE off.

If you still have problems, I will be interested enough to try to
reproduce them.

Other items to consider Are you on modem, ISDN, DSL, frame
relay, what?

There is some tweaking that can be done for windows.

If you are using IE, any server that links you to ftp will cause
freeze and eventually return an error message about the "server
returned extended information"

I also regard the gurus on this list to be better informed re TCP/IP, and I still
believe that this is where the problem lies, and not specifically with Win98 ...

Any constructive ideas?

I'm also dual booting, I've noticed that Windoze seems to have quite a
problem with connecting to different sites, don't know how to answer other
than - just use Linux!

[expert] TCP/IP Problem

2000-04-03 Thread John N

I switch between Mandrake 7.02 and Win98 SE. I know, I know... but I
have clients who use Windows so I have no choice.

Under Linux I can reach any website without difficulty, hell even using
the floppy disk QNX and it's tiny browser I can do this.

Under Win98 there are numerous sites which lock up at the "Connecting to..." stage.

Examples: news.cnet.com, linuxnewbie.org, linux.com (only 3 of many ...)

It seems to be a TCP/IP parameter problem, beyond my scope.

Any ideas?
