[expert] USB-mouse and 7.2 - disappearing hardlink!?

2000-11-09 Thread Viktor Lakics

the trick from Charles did not help, sniff (-:

I did not help me either. But to make this story even more interesting, I did
the following:

The console mouse did not work from as early as boot time (/dev/mouse no such
device). So I made a hardlink "ln /dev/usbmouse /dev/mouse". Rebooted. Checked
the console, fire up mc, mouse working fine. I thought, well, it is sorted. I
left my computer on for the night, then in the morning cursor is frozen in X,
switching to console, getting the same erro message:

"oops, error /dev/mouse no such device gpm invoked from gpm.c (170)"

What is going on? I am almost at the point to stop the gpm demon and forget
about console mouse, but this would not be a nice way to solve a problem..

Viktor

Same mouse, same thing, except I "upgraded" the install the second time
around and reinstalled the mouse, then it worked.

2000-11-09 Thread Charles A Edwards

One thing on my PS/2 trick that I failed to mention is that when you reboot
and unplug the PS/2 mouse then when Linux starts the hadware wizard will ask
if you want to remove the PS/2 mouse configuration. Either choose No or
Ignore.
Just out of curiousity. The system I had the problem on is a AMD 450 k6-2
with a VIA chip set. How many of you that are haiving this problem also have
the VIA chip?

When I tried

dd if=/dev/psmouse of=mouse.droppings count=100 bs=1

I got nothing. Use the nodes in /dev, and remake them if necessary. It could be
my problem - your kernel may not support it :-(. I spent some time figuring that

make sure that the USB service is started at boot time and *after* taht that
 GPM services are started...

2000-11-07 Thread Charles A Edwards

I have a Logitech Optical Wheelmouse and I had the same problem with it.
The USB mouse driver would load during boot but Mouse Con fails with a no
dev/mouse error so that when I got to the graphical login my mouse would not
work.
The way I was able to fix mine was to hook-up a PS/2 mouse as well as the
USB mouse, boot the system. When the new hardware wizard launched I
configured the mouse as a USB Wheel mouse. Once the system finished booting
I shutdown and unhooked the PS/2 mouse. I restarted my system and the USB
