Problems persist. I think I have the symbolic links right, but when I start printtool it does not see my printer, when I try detect I get this error "Could not find pconf_detect command-line utility required for auto-detection. Make sure that the gnulpr printfilters package is properly installed." Any suggestons? [expert] printer woes
I have tried everything and can not get my printer to work with MK 8--it did for a time under 7.2 until I upgraded cups. I never has this printer or my pervious, Canon BJC 6000 work under MK 8. I have a Epson Stylus Photo 870 connected to my parallel port and tired USB. It did work with USB, but painfully slow and very faint--totally unusable. I tried the web interface with cups and I see the printer there but cant get it to print. I tried KCUPS and that is how I got the USB to work (sort of) but it will not see my parallel port. Under Mandrake Control Center, Hardware, Hardware, I see a printer icon, but nothing identified for it, as if it is empty. Under Printer, I try to set it up but get an error saying lp not ready. Then I delete the printer and reinstall and still wont print. It acts as if my parallel port is not there. But this printer works great under Win95 attached to the parallel port. But all the software I use is Linux, so that point is really mute. What else can I try? This problem is getting critial since I need a working printer for my new job. Re: [expert] Printer Woes-bug Try This!
To all those who have helped and have also wrestled with these various problems. The lsmaod check remended me of a post several weeks ago. I managed to track it down and tried it out. So far I have had a functioning printer for three days running now, a new record for me in Linux-Mandrake 6.1, but definitely nothing to brag about. I had convinced several individuals to try out Linux-Mandrake recently including a die-hard M$ NT instructor and am very troubled by the difficulty in something as basic as a listed and common printer configuration. I have not been the only one to meet new and unexpected problems with this latest version of Linux-Mandrake. Yes, I had planned to purchase a "boxed set" just to support "the cause" but will now hold off for 6.2 perhaps. To get to the gist of this post: >I've had a similar problem after upgrading my Mandrake 6.0 to 6.1, >posted a question some time ago but got no response. What fixed it for >me was to add the following lines at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local >/sbin/modprobe parport >/sbin/modprobe parport_pc >/sbin/modprobe lp >--now my printer works again, maybe that helps you as well! >bye, Willy Who ever you are Willy thanks alot, you've given me hope again that I can quit rebooting into M$ to print. After rebooting LInux yet again, this is working for me as well. However this was posted Oct 6 Why is this issue not addressed. A "new user" would certainly not know to "add" these to HUH??? I am sure that if this is indeed a (I hope ) permanent fix for me that the reasons can be addressed by someone more astute that my feeble attempts at "Linuxizing" :-) If there are only two of us in the world who had this problem that would be different. I would ask any of you who have problems and and think this might help to try this. Please let me know if it works so I can pass it on to the NT instructor that, "oh yeah, you just add xyz to wfpd.rcd/xwf.rccc.x/etf/rint.d/yuck.local, heck everbody knows that!" Thanks to Everyone and especially the hardworking programmers at Linux-Mandrake who have to put up with users like me. William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
Re: [expert] Printer Woes-bug and lsmod
I can sing a ballade about current lpr-bugs... This is becomming utterly annoying - i have been using linux for 5 years and NEVER BEFORE have i seen such a grave bug (or is it better to say "such a beautifull bug-zoo"?) persisting for such a long time in any linux distribution. One of the possible rasons for the weird behaviour of hte lpr-package could be the change in the demon-ownership: The lpr-demon used to be started as "root.lpr" or something like that, (i think). However, this changed and now it gets started as user which send the print-job. Great for the security, but jobs which are sent from a remote machine end up beeing owned by a root and block the printer. Look at this: [root@marvin local]#ls -l /var/spool/lpd/local/ total 38 -rw-rw 1 bin lp 136 Nov 2 12:46 cfA026marvin.exp.univie.ac.at -rw-rw 1 root root 75 Nov 2 12:45 cfA073lena.exp.univie.ac.at -rw-rw 1 denis lp 1993 Nov 2 12:46 dfA026marvin.exp.univie.ac.at -rw-rw 1 root root 16711 Nov 2 12:45 dfA073lena.exp.univie.ac.at Both of these jobs have been submited as user denis - one localy, another from a remote machine. This blocks the printer completely. [denis@marvin havlik]$ lpq HP-LJ4L is ready and printing Rank Owner Job Files Total Size 1st denis 73 (standard input) 16711 bytes 1st denis 26 (standard input) 1993 bytes [denis@marvin havlik]$ Ha, great - here we have two "first" jobs. Well done! [root@marvin local]# tail /var/log/messages Nov 2 12:54:45 marvin lpd[1138]: HP-LJ4L: cfA026marvin.exp.univie.ac.at: Permission denied Nov 2 12:54:45 marvin lpd[1138]: HP-LJ4L: cfA073lena.exp.univie.ac.at: Permission denied Nov 2 12:54:45 marvin lpd[1138]: HP-LJ4L: cfA026marvin.exp.univie.ac.at: Permission denied I simply LOVE this. So, if I restart the lp-demon as a root, the queued jobs get printed - i assume on restart, lpd gets started as root, so it is allowed to do what has to be done. Now what? Am i supposed to make the "lpd" suid root or restart the lpd-demon from cron every hour, or what? cu Denis

Thanks for everyones responses and patience in previous posts. I really wonder what is going on !? Some people seem to have no problems while others (like me) keep running into the wall. L-M 6.1 Helios I recently had another outburst of strangeness with lprm locking and /dev/lp0 disappearing but was able to bring it all back to life again after deleting the lp directory, leaving the 'lock' file in /var/spool/lpd, removing any printers in 'printtool' and actually having to reboot. I am still using lpr-0.38-3mdk.i586.rpm after the rpm -e lpr-0.43-1mdk.i586.rpm and can only wonder if something residual was left around which might affect my paticular setup. lpr-0.38-3mdk.i586.rpm is the original 'lpr.rpm' on the 6.1 Helios cd I got from the Linux-Mandrake site so it should be there or a mirror. Dont know if it will fix your problem though. I too sometimes find lprm acting very strangely!? Never, Never, NEVER happened with any distribution of Linux before?!!! So far my Hp 855c is still working fine. Good Luck ! [expert] Printer Woes-bug in lpr-0.43-1mdk
Well for now Printer Woes are over concerning the bizzarre behavior detailed in previous posts. The final solution to getting my printer working was removing the lpr-0.43-1mdk.i586.rpm (the 'update') and replacing it with: lpr-0.38-3mdk.i586.rpm (the default in 6.1 Helios) This was brought to my attention by Lee Burnside who had the same kind of HP printer behavior and suggested the "downgrade". A classic example of "when is an upgrade a downgrade?" I used to think only M$ was guilty !:-) Well we ALL are failable even Linux from time to time ! I did not have Lee's solution in this mornings "Expert" List on my machine but found it in Mandrake.Com's List Archives !!!??? Do postings go there first?! It would also be very nice if the drivers listed as working for HP, i.e. 850x etc did in fact WORK. WP8 (free version) has one and it works great in WP ! My thanks to all those who helped on this one, Herman, Lee and 'Kotz' Michael Now I can go on and prepare my LONG list of other questions sure to arise in the neverending pursuit of Linux Wisdom. Thanks again, William Bouterse Juneu, Alaska
