Re: [expert] rpm package inventory

2001-03-23 Thread vick Julius

Hi
I have a corrupted partition on a 2nd Hard disk (/dev/hdc3) and i tried fsck
and e2fsck with no success I tried also the following commands:

1)#sfdisk -l /dev/hdc3

Output:

Warning: start=12434310 - this looks like a partition rather than
the entire disk. Using fdisk on it is probably meaningless.
[Use the --force option if you really want this]

2) # sfdisk -f /dev/hdc32) # sfdisk -f /dev/hdc3

output:

Checking that no-one is using this disk right now ...
OK

Disk /dev/hdc3: 272 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track

sfdisk: ERROR: sector 0 does not have an msdos signature
/dev/hdc3: unrecognized partition
Old situation:
No partitions found
Input in the following format; absent fields get a default value.

Usually you only need to specify and (and perhaps ).

3) # dumpe2fs /dev/hdc3

output:

dumpe2fs 1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
dumpe2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdc3
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

Any idea?
Thank you
Vick

Not much really: add two user interactions to rpmDrake: one to export a text file with
the installed package names and media from which it installs, and another which reads
such file and merges it with the "pick list", opening a simple "change/ignore" dialog
for exceptions. What could be simpler?

It would not be a 100% solution, but in the developer work vs. user time saved
coefficient list, it would be right there at the top.

And while we are at it: surely saving/importing the inventory of the SAME system rpm's
is not likely to cause any problems. Let me conclude the rant: Linux philosophy is to
"drive" things from text specification files, not from (1000+ line!) GUI widgets. GUI
has it's place in applications, but this misguided stampede to GUI tools in sys
administration (installs, etc.) is an example of mass-psychology at its worst.

And one has to. I mean: how many users have a palmpilot? Right, then why
the heck is it installed by default?

Sure, but it takes a lot of work.

Thank, but no thanks... :)

1) A clean install is clearly ~way~ simpler, cleaner and safer,
especially when moving between major release levels. Even
if this was not a good enough reason, I'm installing on a new,
higher capacity HD.

2) Forcing the user to work again and again his/her way manually
thru a list of over 1000 packages is INSANE.

There ought to be a better way. Anyone? (Mandrake...?)

What you're asking may be pretty difficult from what I've seen

of the MDK 8.0 RPM list. They done so much package sub-dividing
and renaming (I really, REALLY wish they'd quit that. Makes
trying to install 3rd party packages a PITA.)

Basically you need to install 8.0 in the upgrade mode, that way
you let it do all the guess work. But even that way you'll
probably get a lot of extra stuff you may not have wanted.

[expert] rpm package inventory

2001-03-18 Thread tony K.

How does one take the inventory of rpm packages installed on an
existing system (M7.2) and then import the list to rpmDrake
(or similar) on an M8.0 installed system?

thanks in advance,
