Re: [expert] Memory Size
No, it is actually a BIOS issue, which is why you are told in many docs on this issue to upgrade your BIOS. LILO does not actually care about the memory at all, it just passes the commandline options to the kernel. Windows might have other methods (non-BIOS) of determining the amount of memory, because I have never seen it make a mistake. Try typing "free" (no quotes)in a term window the first line first # refers to system ram if it doesn't say 320,000 or more as the first # then you must append it in lilo.conf regardless of the kernel version Phil Connor Emory Booty Co. So sprach Charles Curley am Sun, Oct 22, 2000 at 11:24:30AM -0600: I'd say, if this is considerably less than 320, then... Good point. Some video cards, I believe AGP cards, take up various amounts of main memory for their own purposes, and free will report the amount of memory left over after the video card has done its thing. Yes, some can do that, but some do the opposite. I have a TNT2/M64, and looking at top, it tells me that X is using ~200% of my memory :] Well, this is because I have 32 MB on my AGP card which are addressed behind the main memory, or so it seems. If free reports 300 MB, I'd look at my video card. If it reports 64 MB, I'd look elsewhere. Yes, definitely. So sprach Eric Mings am Sun, Oct 22, 2000 at 10:39:36AM -0400: Mandrake 7 on one machine with 320 megs of memory. Using the kde system info (memory) panel it gives what appears to be inconsistent Don't know about this KDE memory thingy, but type in "free" at a prompt. The very first numerical value tells you how much RAM Linux thinks it got. If this is != 320, then you may very well need to add this entry to your lilo.conf.
