RE: [expert] samba or nfs
Hi Don't know whether bugs in Win95 have been ported to Win98... >From my previous experience, samba may be compiled with something they call "Win95 bug workaround". Do you use samba out from the binary package? Maybe, recompilation with this option turned on will help... I'm pretty sure that it's a Win98 problem because when I had SuSE on this same machine (dual boot) FTP back and forth worked excellent both ways. Vincent Danen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) . There are a couple NFS *client* packages for Win95/98 and, I think, one half-decent server package... the other client/server NFS packages are all for NT, but every last one of them is commercial and cost a bundle. On the same token, a question... I run Win98 on a P2-350 and Mandrake 6 on a P166 and I have a real hard time transferring files whether it be via samba or FTP or even telnet. I'm pretty sure that it's a Win98 problem because when I had SuSE on this same machine (dual boot) FTP back and forth worked excellent both ways. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do here? I think I need to find a way to either have Win98 receive things at a higher rate of speed (or a way to make Win98 handle the high-speed transfers) or a way to slow Linux down when transferring to a specific IP address. Both are NE2000 PCI network cards (10mbit) on a 10/100 hub. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. This problem has haunted me for months, and if I can find a way to solve it, I'd be very happy. Vincent Danen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) . ICQ: 16978834 BBBS/LiI . RE: [expert] samba or nfs
If the client(s) is (are) to be windows based, then I would use samba on the linux machine. One other added bonus is that using the smbmount command on the linux side (if that and smbfs are installed), you can mount the windows shares onto the linux machine as well. A bit off topic - I have switched all my network file sharing to smb (even for linux <-> linux) as I have had nothing but probelms with NFS and 2.2.x kernels. Others?
