alt+F7, assuming you haven't done anything to distrub X. You should really use
CTRL+ALT+F2 or higher.

Then, you have likely done something to X when you went to console #1. Try
restarting your system and this time, DON'T USE CONSOLE #1 WHILE UNDER X!!!

2000-04-08 Thread Brian T. Schellenberger

I have run into this problem but only after having done a suspend
previously since the last boot. It happens quite consistently if I
suspend twice between boots. (The process of suspending forces you out
of X before suspending to avoid another lockup.)

Also, in spite of civilme's experience, as long as I stay away from
suspending, I do ctnl-alt-F2 / do stuff / alt-F7 all the time without
problems.

I would stay away from ctnl-alt-F1, though. That's that console that
psuedo-lanched the X session in the first place.

Well, technically it's only "alt-7" (as in the title of the mail thread
here), but I doubt that this makes any difference.

It's not supposed to do that, but I recommend using ctl-alt-F2 rather
than ctl-alt-F1 myself. Not sure if you would help you any, but it's
worth a try.

OK, you only need to do Alt-F7 to go back to X, but Ctrl-Alt-F7 works too.
And, yes, this has always worked on all previous versions of Linux I have
ran on ANY box.

As for my h/ware, SiS 6326 chip detected & installed automatically by Mdk
7.0-2, using the SVGA server. The only thing I changed was setting default
colour depth from 24bpp to 16bpp to fix Netscape's little monochrome icon
problem.

The fault, by the way, is intermittent, sometimes it works and sometimes it
locks - seems to be about 50/50, but I don't like to do it to often.

One of the local guys here suggested it might be something to do with power
management shutting down or putting something to sleep. I did an
"everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" install, and I notice Kapm & laptop stuff
on the Kmenus. Is there something there I should look at? Perhaps uninstall
some stuff?

Not true. ESPECIALLY if you login through xdm, kdm, or gdm.

Yes, X is running on top of virtual terminal 1. That means the output is
going there. X gets all it's input from terminal 7, though, not 1.
About all you can do is ^C or ^Z (kill it or suspend it). A ^Z doesn't
even suspend X, just the startx script. And that's only valid if you
logged in via getty on terminal 1. If you login via xdm & co., then ^C
kills getty, not X!

Ctrl-Alt-F-ing through consoles should have no effect on X at all. If one
has logged in via xdm, etc., then getty is still running on terminal
1! You can log in and have a shell! This is not necessarily a good idea,
because output from X is still going here, and it will likely confuse you,
but the point is, X doesn't get input from terminal 1, it just sends it
output there.
