That appears to be working with Mozilla 1.4.

It looks as though I ought to be able to do the same in Galeon -
about:config brings up the preferences.
There is already a general.useragent.override entry present

"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686) Gecko/20030630 Galeon/1.3.5".

After 'Modify'ing the String to

"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686) Gecko/20030630 Galeon/1.3.5
(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

this works also; but on re-loading Galeon, I find the String back where
it was before.

How do I get to save the change?

TIA,

DougB

Thanks, Brant and all the others.
I'll try this final version.

Yes there is. I posted this on the newbie list a couple of weeks ago
and it looks like it would apply here also.

Here's the trick for Mozilla:

-Type in "about:config" in the address bar.
-Right click on "Preference Name" and choose New => String
-Enter "general.useragent.override" as the name.
-Enter "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98)" or "Mozilla/4.0
(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" as the string.
-Restart Mozilla and you're done.

Brant,
I'm running 1.4 here and ran into a problem. If I used this string,
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
I got an error saying
"INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Expected a version > 5! Version = 4"
So I switched to

Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) and mozilla is able
to start just fine.

Noted.

Revised again:

-Type in "about:config" in the address bar.
-Right click on "Preference Name" and choose New => String
-Enter "general.useragent.override" as the name.
-Enter "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" as the string.
-Restart Mozilla and you're done.
I hope that's the final revision. :-)

I found the same as James, clicked on preferences - nothing. Went onto
do as you both describe and - *no* Mozilla.

I'll change it to reflect that in the future. It did that to me when I
was testing it out, but it didn't do it every time. I'm not quite sure
what the magic sequence was to get it to work as I explained it, but
what you stated is a more repeatable way to do it.

Revised:

-Type in "about:config" in the address bar.
-Right click just below "Preference Name" and choose New => String
-Enter "general.useragent.override" as the name.
-Enter "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98)" or "Mozilla/4.0

-Restart Mozilla and you're done.

Is that any better?

Though I usually employ Mozilla for surfing, I find the Konqueror way of
masquerading by far the easiest: it can be setup and stored per site and it
fools even Microsoft: I haven`t convinced my kids yet to use Linux all the
time and I regularly get updates from Microsoft for them. Konqueror is very
good for that. (BTW it does not require KDE to be running).

But on this list or another one I read recently that some interactive
banking programmes are not fooled by masquerading, so YMMV.

Philosophically, I hate the idea of masquerading - I don't want to be
though to be using IE, but I recognise that it's sometimes necessary.
What would be nice is to be able to set a profile that uses the
masquerading, while all others don't, but I guess that isn't
possible. Still, one could always use one browser when masquerading
is necessary and another for the default browser.
