Then you believe wrong. From upthread:

I could definitely use help with Netscape. Any ideas, folks?

followed by:

To the best of my knowledge this isn't possible with Netscape
Messenger.

Right, Messenger cannot, but that had nothing to do with the original
post, which was:

[Collins Richey wrote (I think)]
It would be really helpful if everyone who responds to posts on the
list would setup their mailer to indicate who is being quoted,

Since the above is exactly the only kind of message quoting Messenger is
capable of doing automatically, the fact that Messenger cannot be
customized to do something else is irrelevant.

Ok... *taking a deep breath* I don't believe it was ever in question that
Messenger "could" quote the original text, but rather the _REPLY-LEADIN_
line that precedes the quoted text. Pine, Mutt, Elm, and Kmail are able to
insert the desired text into the leadin, while programs like Netscape
Messenger CAN NOT. Clear as mud?

I've reconstructed the thread in sequence, which the idiotic top posting
so many do screws all up.

If you look above, you can see that the original request was for people
to replace "you wrote" with "[name] wrote". Later in thread, someone
wrote that help was needed getting this to happen in Netscape, followed
by an opine that it wasn't possible in Netscape.

As you can see in the very first body line in this message is "Mark
Weaver wrote:", who wrote the message I am replying to. This was put
there by Netscape 2.02 for OS/2. I've yet to find any Netscape mail
version that fails to put the name from the "from" line of the message
replied to as the first words in a reply message. IOW, Netscape only
does what the original poster wanted done, providing no other options.

I think you knew what I meant the first time. Unless one wants to take the
time the "recode" Netscape and make some additions to the Messenger code
module it is presently not do-able in Netscape Messenger.

In Netscape 4.76 you can go to Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups |
Messages and look to your right. Choose quoted and click on the box to
allow automatic quoting to all messages replied and forwarded.

to tell you the truth I don't know that this is possible with Netscape or
others. the only apps I know of that can do this are Pine, Kmail, Knode,
and probably a few other Linux apps.

Thank you. I had checked those settings before and assumed that replying to
the receiver (expert list) was like responding to all and would be quoted as
such. Instead it's like responding to sender. I just fixed the problem and
thanks for bringing it to my attention. I just didn't notice it because I
don't read my own posts.
