OK, I downloaded and compiled KOnCD, and it appears to be doign it's job, but cdrecord is not, I get this output both via command line and KOnCD. Yes, every one! Well, I'll havt'a try KisoCD. I really like KOnCD, but it and a few others (eg, XCDroast, Gtoaster) error out when trying to burn 80min (750+mb's) audio CD's from wav's. Problem seems to be as soon as files are added to the 'to be burned' list once 650mb is surpassed, even tho I always check the 'ignore media size' options. XCDroast errors on calculating size, won't let you burn. KOnCD and Gtoaster segfault when 650 is exceeded in the file list. Gcombust doesn't have these problems. I've recently burned 78 to 79mins (~780mb's) to 80min/700mb CD's using Gcombust. I sure like KOnCD's GUI and simplicity much better tho. I've never had a problem with it burning 650mb CD's, data, audio, copying CD's, or making bootable CD's. Usually I prefer the CL, but burning Cd's is one thing I like doin with a GUI. Re: [expert] CDRW Drive Addition
cdrecord checks access permissions against the users login before giving access to files, not relying solely on the OS to do this. It is therefore okay to make it SUID root. Once you do that you don't need root access to burn CDs. The GUIs do work of course, but it maybe true that some are better than others. I use kisocd (kisocdII for kde2). It doesn't look so cool or slick, but it does the job okay. Its best feature is that it supports mkisofs features that allow you to pick files/dirs to write and allows you to pre-organize them into a new dir structure that will be written to CD. Most GUIs will only let you write a pre-existing dir structure. This feature works really well when selecting a bunch of carefully chosen dirs for backup. Other GUIs really NEED this feature. After kisocd, koncd looks like a reasonable bet. Goto http://apps.kde.com/ and do a search for CD to find others a reviews. Nick. Caleb Newville wrote: > > Ok, so I have the SCSI emulation working, and HardDrake confirms that. > I would now like to know a good piece of burn software (KDE prefered). cdrecord is in Mandrake 8.0 and is very easy to use from the command line (always use -v). You must be root. Run cdrecord -scanbus to verify your scsi emulation is working. This will aslo give you the parameters you will need for the dev parameter of cdrecord. Read: man cdrecord man mkisofs PS. My experience is than NONE of the GUI base cdwriting packages work. -- Ron. Ok, so I have the SCSI emulation working, and HardDrake confirms that. I would now like to know a good piece of burn software (KDE prefered). For more info about editing lilo.conf type "man lilo.conf". Good look. Salu2, Oscar.

Re: [expert] cdrw drive
I just put in a plextor 8220Te ( 8x CD-r, 2x CD-RW, 20x CD-ROM ) external SCSI ( I assume the internal works just as well ). Using cd-record and my own scripts it's taken over for 3 other 2x burners and a few 1x I was using for several years. As it can burn more disks in the same time then all of them combined :) Buffer hasn't been below 56% and that was when I was also transfering files in/out across nfs and samba while it burned a premade CD image file. --- James Michael Keller | [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Tech" | http://www.radix.net/~jmkeller - Original Message - From: Marco Ciampa <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, October 19, 1999 10:39 AM Subject: Re: [expert] cdrw drive > On ven, 15 ott 1999, Wes Morriston wrote: > >I'm going to but a cdrw drive for my linux Mandrake (6.1) box. Re: [expert] cdrw drive
most atapi drives will work but require a quick little addition to lilo . append="ide-scsi" or something like that . otherwise for total ease just buy a scsi cdrw just about any will work with cdrecord and xcdroast now days Daver
