Ok i got my problem solved with the traffic between the two boxes,
win98/linux.
I just changed from hdcp to a static ip address on the linux box an it put
a stop to the all the traffic going between the two boxes. still not sure
what was causing the traffic when i was not doing anthing but it is seemed
to be fixed now. Thanks for the info you all provided.

Now i have a question on samba shares. My win98 box can see the sa\mba
share but wants a password. How do i setup the password so that it can see
the network an acfcess the linux box thanks.

Ok i installed corel linux yesterday an when it booted I get lots of
traffic showing up on my hub from the linux box an win98 box.
i then blew away corel an put mandrake on the linux box an i get the same
thing. nothing it going out over the cable modem just between the two boxes
but I can not determin what is causing the traffic. I have sygate running
on the win98 box for now to share the net access from the cable modem, it
is supplying an ip go the linux box via dhcp. Can someont tell me where to
look to see what is causing all this traffic. the lights on the hub are
going 90 to nuthing. i can unplug one cat5 cable from hub an in a littlw
while hook it back an the traffic is stopped an i have internet access.
then sometimes even that will not work. Im at a loss for now as what to
look for thanks in advance for helping

You need to find out what's causing all of the traffic. Use tcpdump on
your Linux machine to get that information:

tcpdump -i eth0

will show everything going over the first ethernet connection.

Either download a network analyzer such as Ethereal for Linux or Sniffer
Pro (nai.com) for Windows and drop it on the appropriate box. Either
should tell you exactly what you need to know!
