[FairfieldLife] Shankara in confrontation with Mandana
Mandana, who was a cofirmed follower of Vedic ritualism, was terribly annoyed to note that the newcomer without Sikah (tuft of hair) and Upavita (sacred thread) was a Sannyasin. As the great householder's wrath increased, Sankara's amusement also grew. In a desperate fit of anger Mandarna burst out into a series of abusive interrogations. "Whence have you come, you shaven-headed fellow?" asked Mandana discourteously, meaning, by what way he came in, when the gates were closed [He was, of course, Flying Yogicly? --carde]. Taking the question to mean 'How far are you shaven?' Shankara replied, "Up to the neck". "That is not what I asked," said Mandana, "I asked (about) your way?" To this Shankara quipped, "Did you ask the 'way'? Then what did the way reply?" Annoyed terribly Mandana ejaculated: "It replied that your mother is a widow and you are a widow's son." Unconcerned, Shankara humorously remarked: "Indeed, did the 'way' tell you that 'you' are a widow's son? Then it must surely be so. For it was you and not myself who questioned the 'way', and in the answer you received, the 'you' must surely refer to yourself." Further exasperated, Mandana exclaimed: "Have you drunk (pitam) toddy?" Quibbling on the meaning of the word 'pitam', which means 'drunk' when used as a verb and 'yellow' when used as an adjective, Shankara took the question to mean "Is toddy yellow?" and gave an impertinent answer to that impertinent question. "Oh no! Toddy is not yellow but white." At this Mandana remarked with a mischievous insinuation, "I see, you are, therefore, well acquainted with its colour!" "And you with its taste!" promptly retorted Shankara. Again Mandana said: "You who indulge in such impertinent talk must be under the intoxication produced by eating poisoned (rotten) flesh." Interpreting the statement of Mandana differently (for the statement 'matto jaataH kalañjaashi' can also mean 'the one born of me, i.e. my son, is an eater of poisoned flesh'), Shankara said: "You are right. As the father, so the son. If your son eats poisoned flesh, he must have learnt it only from you." And so on Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. [FairfieldLife] Re: FF , Active Spiritual Practice Groups
Yes, it is interesting to see who all is still here when you go to these 'other' programs. For instance, this last summer when the lady-saints tours came through. Ammachi gave darshan to about 4000 people while she was here. Yes, some people travel here to see her here but a lot of those people were from here. Similar thing with Karunamayi. Again recently with Bapuji, an elderly holy man who came through and gave darshan. It was very interesting to see who came out of the woodwork this year in particular after the whole 're- certification' thing on campus effectively spun so many out of responsibility for the movement. Now, there may be a couple of thousand adult meditators who remain living in the larger meditating community and only just a few hundred true-believers up on campus or up north in just the TMO fold. Yet most meditators who occassionally git asked if they are 'meditators', might generically say 'yes they came here as meditators' and then more freely distance themselves now from that which is 'TMO'. As the Weekly Reader article says, FF has become something else. -Doug "sparaig" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >And this suggests that a lot of people decided to go "off the program," rather than use MMY's programs exclusively. TM's research does need to be *replicated* by independent researchers, but TM can't force them to do so. By the same token, the scientific community can't declare TM's research invalid unless independent replication has been attempted and failed. > - every group has stories of its accomplishments and > superiority. You would hardly expect TM to support that claim in terms of some *other* group's criteria that TM did not consider valid. > > The one TM study that clearly meets objective research criteria and > that I think everyone would view as a positive benefit is reduction of > blood pressure. > > There are innumerable studies showing physiological changes associated > with a whole variety of mental practices. > Yahoo! It's more a matter of choice -- not everyone believes or agrees that "fastest growth towards enlightenment" occurs by being in the dome. I prefer to do my program in my sweet, comfortable home and on my schedule (5:00-5:30 am) rather than in the domes. It makes me much happier to do my program in my own space. And for me, that's what it boils down to -- what makes me happy and makes my life flow smoothly. And the $100.00/month goes into my retirement account. A wise investment for me, personally. Re: [FairfieldLife] FF , Active Spiritual Practice Groups
What I can't quite believe when I look at the ads in the WR in the Marketplace section are the amount of people attempting to separate others from their $$ any way they can. Some are pretty creative, I gotta admit. There's one person who claims she can "awaken your cells to the divine light"... for a hefty price, I'm sure! Then there's another who claims to do 'intuitive' consulting...all of these coming with suitably beatific pictures of the people in question gazing off into the wild blue yonder. I thought most of us got past this junk years ago. Sal On Oct 20, 2005, at 9:37 PM, dhamiltony2k5 wrote: In looking over the list there is a range, but they are active ones. [FairfieldLife] Movement in UK
>From a friend over there: Hi, I see someone asked if the Movement had been re-instated in the UK. Answer is no. There has been what could be seen as a slight softening in that meditators, sidhas and govs are now told they should be comfortable in Vastu homes - ie MSV services are available. Also the govs have been told to go and get jobs (!) One could observe that they'll need jobs with MSV properties now carrying a 20% commission to the TMO. TM teaching, courses, sidhis are all still banned in the UK. Ayurveda products continue. Regards Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. I wish we could make this a *rule*: Don't make a higher-order comment about a lower-order statement UNLESS you make it explicit that you are doing so and explain what point you want to make thereby. I assume Lawson has a reason for pointing to no-self here, but it would be a lot more helpful if he explained it. Too often folks use higher-order comments as a way to avoid addressing a lower-order statement, and all it does is introduce confusion and short-circuit the discussion. If you have a *reason* for short-circuiting the discussion in this way, fine, there are occasions when it's appropriate, IMHO. But *make a case for doing it*. Don't just use it as a thought-stopper. I was referring specifically to research on witnessing and breath suspension which I doubt was published in a peer reviewed journal. In terms of tm research in general in the past 20 yrs, I estimated a couple yrs ago that about 95% was done by TMO insiders and about 80% published in TMO publications or just delivered as an address at some conference, which the TMO incorrectly refers to as published. I could not find any replication references to any of the studies. This estimation was done based on a quick look at a TMO website with a long list of studies. I'm not saying that some of the findings, esp physiological, aren't real, but I think someone is very naive to not discount inside tmo research due to the heavy marketing influence. I've heard from ex mum professors and ex grad students of the heavy pressure put on mum researchers to come up with positive results - basically to do the study over and over and keep changing the statistical analysis until you get what the university wants to hear. Nobody is going to be surprised. Online Etymology Dictionary: surprise (n.) c.1457, "unexpected attack or capture," from M.Fr. surprise "a taking unawares," from noun use of pp. of O.Fr. surprendre "to overtake," from sur- "over" + prendre "to take," from L. prendere, contracted from prehendere "to grasp, seize" (see prehensile). Meaning "something unexpected" first recorded 1592, that of "feeling caused by something unexpected" is 1608. Meaning "fancy dish" is attested from 1708. >From these definitions it looks pretty clear that "somebody" is indeed going to be taken unawares, overtaken, grasped, and seized -- by Nobody :-) Yahoo! I'm quite sure your estimates of where studies were published are substantially incorrect. For one thing, there *is* only one regular TMO publication, Modern Science and Vedic Science, and it's only published a couple of times a year (I'm not even sure it's still published). Nor does it publish more than an occasional TM research paper; usually it's more theoretical papers of various sorts, often not on anything even remotely scientific. The other TMO publications were the Collected Papers series, but the last one (there were five volumes) appeared in 1990. The first volume did contain papers that had been published nowhere else, but I'm pretty sure all the papers in the rest of the series had been published elsewhere (not by any means all in high- quality journals, however). Don't be misled by the fact that some of the TM research reference lists give the source of many studies as the Collected Papers. If you check, you'll find those are reprints of studies that were originally published elsewhere, in independent journals. And again, the most recent volume of the Collected Papers was published a decade and a half ago. No TM research since then, except for *maybe* a paper or two in Modern Science and Vedic Science, has been published in a TMO publication. If you want to check out the Collected Papers volumes: http://www.tm.org/research/508_studies.html There are plenty of conference proceedings and dissertation abstracts sprinkled throughout the reference lists, but I'd guess they account for around 10 percent. By *far* the bulk of the TM research studies have been published in independent journals, many of them peer-reviewed. > I could not find any replication references to any of the > studies. Right; as I said in another post, they need independent replication. But TM can't force independent researchers to undertake it. > This estimation was done based on a quick look at a TMO website > with a long list of studies. I think you might want to take a longer look sometime. That you cite "TMO publications" when there are actually only the two I mentioned, which couldn't be where many of the studies were published for the reasons I stated, suggests to me that your examination was overhasty. > I'm not saying that some of the findings, esp physiological, aren't > real, but I think someone is very naive to not discount inside tmo > research due to the heavy marketing influence. This is esp true with > the maharishi effect work. Well, it certainly could be--in fact I'd be surprised if some stuff hadn't occurred along these lines--but anonymous, vague rumors aren't really much to go on. (Plus which, such finagling is by no means unheard of in mainstream institutions.) Most of the TM research is in a kind of limbo until some independents attempt to replicate it. It can't be accepted as valid because of both the lack of replication and the TM affiliation of the vast majority of the researchers. On the other hand, as long as replication hasn't been attempted *and failed*, the studies can't be rejected out of hand either. There's a difference between *discounting* the research, as you advocate, and reserving judgment on it. I'd advocate the latter. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Oh OK, I assumed Collected Papers was used when there wasn't a better reference. I'll try to find the website again too as I think we're talking about a different universe of studies - many of the studies I saw listed, esp M-effect ones, weren't really published at all but were simply doctoral theses done by mum students or presentations given at various conferences. When Hagelin talks about there being 80 something different studies proving the M-effect, he's including the studies in the list I saw. Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] Westernized yoga teachings
Western teachings on yoga are broken in lots of ways. In my area of spiritual teaching, it seems that the commercial interests and media that sell yoga and meditation to the public have redefined terms like 'yoga', 'meditation' and 'tantra' to suit their commercial objectives. For example, 'yoga' now just means a set of stretching and breathing exercises, instead of a comprehensive culture of spiritual life designed to provide the ultimate cure for all kinds of suffering. 'Tantra' is now just another sex technique to sell to frustrated males in a gross material culture, instead of compassionate instructions how to live a spiritual life in the material world. 'Meditation' is now just another stress-reduction technique instead of a way to realize one's essential spiritual nature and eternal relationship with God. In the ancient Vedic tradition of the Esoteric Teaching, in which I have the good fortune to be an Initiate and Master Teacher, the first principle I have people study are the three ways in which their knowledge of yoga and meditation are defective: You have an insufficient quantity of knowledge. The knowledge you do have has been distorted. You have the wrong quality of knowledge. If you doubt these assertions, our introductory video, "The Hard Questions ", will convince you that the same distortions and omissions that occur in the political news also occur in our Western spiritual teachings. A lot of those people are MUm students, not paying regular dome fees. I don't have a real good idea of how many town rus go, but I would guess it's not more than a couple hundred. Also, I'm fairly sure you can still do the 'reduced' fee of $30/month in exchange for some work. Also, for the studies done in collaboration with non-MUM/non-TM researchers, and even the TM/MUM-only stuff done with government grant money, there's a far greater degree of scientific rigor than the stuff that only appears at conferences or in "Collected Papers volume XX."
