[FairfieldLife] Freeing Women By Putting Them In Prison: What OITNB Has Accomplished

2014-06-22 Thread TurquoiseBee turquoi...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Like many, I took advantage of Netflix's distribution policy to binge-watch the
second season of "Orange Is The New Black" this weekend. That policy makes
entire seasons of their original TV series available at once, freeing viewers
from the need to wait a week between episodes. It also offers these
binge-watchers a very different viewing experience, one that concatenates a
whole season of plotlines and action into one seamless whole.

This rather intense viewing experience has left me with a deep appreciation of
the creators of this marvelous series, and for their contribution to the world
of television as a whole, to women as a whole, and to female actors in
particular. I feel compelled to express this appreciation in a series of deep
bows.

The first deep bow goes to OITNB for its contribution to television as a whole,
and for daring to make a series that *asked something* of its viewers. To
appreciate it and want to keep watching it, viewers had to develop a quality
that is sadly missing from many people's lives -- compassion. "Orange Is The
New Black" is based on a real-life memoir by Piper Herman, based on the years
she spent in a women's prison as the result of carrying money for her
drug-dealing girlfriend at the time. Girlfriend gets busted, rats on Piper for
a ten-year-old offence, and as a result now-straight and about-to-get-married
Piper gets sent to prison for four years.

That's the hook that enabled this series to rack up more views in its first
release than any of Netflix's previous series. People wanted to see what it
would be like to be an upper-middle-class white woman trying to get by in an
American women's prison. And by watching, they learned to develop the same
quality that they had learned to develop earlier while watching "Dexter" and
"Breaking Bad" and "Hannibal." All three of those series are about Bad People.
But good people watched them because the series' creators were so good at their
art that they managed to get audience to understand these Bad People, to see
what had made them what they were, and to feel compassion for them. Yes, the
protagonists of these series really were Bad People, but the audiences kept
watching because they had begun to see them compassionately, as just people,
and thus as their fellow human beings. They kept watching because they felt
compassion for these people.

OITNB accomplished this as well, in spades. The women in this prison are all
Bad People. They've all broken the law; I don't remember a single character who
is portrayed as not having done what they were convicted for. And when we meet
some of these women, our first reaction in the audience IS to write them off
and consign them to that judgmental pigeonhole we reserve for Bad People. But
something about these characters, or the series, "gets to us" and we keep
watching. And over time we get to see more of the back story of these people,
and thus to understand what landed them in prison. And we start to feel not
only compassion for them, but love. That is an extraordinary accomplishment.
Deep bow, OITNB.

OITNB did that too, and in my opinion, to a greater extent. The women we meet
in this prison are all Bad People, at least legally. I don't remember
encountering a single character who was written as being convicted wrongfully.
And we meet them and at first glance we viscerally hate some of them. And then
we keep watching, and we see flashbacks to what happened in their lives to land
them in prison, and we start to see other sides of them. Human sides of them.
And over time we find ourselves dropping our judgment of these characters we
were first tempted to write off as "women in prison," and start seeing them as
fellow human beings.

The second deep bow goes to another contribution I think OITNB has made to the
greater world of television and the visual arts -- it is primarily a
woman-created series. The series creator, Jenji Kohan, is herself coming off of
the phenomenal success of her previous series, "Weeds," and is thus already a
superstar in the ill-stocked pantheon of female "players" in the world of TV.
The real Piper Herman is credited as consultant and writer of all episodes so
far. All but a few of the other writers on the series are women. Heck, they
even got Jodie Foster to direct a couple of episodes. OITNB is probably the
most feminist television series ever made. Deep bow.

But my third deep bow goes to OITNB for its contribution to female actors.
There are arguably more great roles that allow female actors to portray strong,
intelligent, and complex women on this show than exist in the rest of
television, combined.

The first season, out of necessity, focused on the interaction of Piper and her
former girlfriend Alex, now in the same prison. Taylor Schilling and Laura
Preppon received accolades and even award nominations for their performances,
but few of the supporting cast did. They wuz robbed. Much of the

[FairfieldLife] Freeing Female Actors by Giving Them More Interesting Characters to Play

2014-06-22 Thread TurquoiseBee turquoi...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Still tripping on the fascinating opportunities finally being afforded to
female actors in the Brave New World of television, today I watched the season
finale of another series that also probably falls into the category of "Nobody
else here watches it" and thus isn't of that much interest to people here. But
being me, I'll report on it anyway. :-)

This other series is called "Orphan Black," and it's from Canada. As TV SciFi
goes, it's actually a pretty OK show, with fairly intelligent plotlines, but
the thing that makes it most interesting is the female actor who plays the lead
roles, Tatiana Maslany. She has been nominated for one Golden Globe award, and
yesterday won her second Critics' Choice award in a row for Best Performance by
an Actress in a Television Series.

And yes, I intentionally said "roles" above. The series is about clones, and
thus Tatiana gets to play 13 different characters. So far. She's made every
single one of them memorable. Good for her.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Biden the Seer?

Share,

Biden was born as a Scorpio ascendant. It looks like it will be difficult for
him to get the nomination as the Democratic contender for the presidency in
2016. He is now running a weak major period of Jupiter. In August 2014, he
will be entering an even weaker subperiod of Venus. It appears that he will
upset many people because of his overzealous ambition in becoming the next
president.

As I've mentioned before, Hillary Clinton's chart is similarly weak due to the
major period of a debilitated Sun. It's very likely that the Republicans will
keep replaying her health issues and the Bengazi incident. From what I heard
on the radio, she became personally upset that someone asked her a question
about Bengazi again. It didn't sound too good for my ears. So, I believe
Hillary will decide not to run for the high office of the land.

Given these circumstances, it would be a wise move for Elizabeth Warren to
make her move to become president. She has a very strong chart which would
help her battle the mudslingers that would surely come during the campaign.

overzealous ambition in becoming the next president.

As I've mentioned before, Hillary Clinton's chart is similarly weak
due to the major period of a debilitated Sun. It's very likely that
the Republicans will keep replaying her health issues and the Bengazi
incident. From what I heard on the radio, she became personally upset
that someone asked her a question about Bengazi again. It didn't
sound too good for my ears. So, I believe Hillary will decide not to
run for the high office of the land.

Given these circumstances, it would be a wise move for Elizabeth
Warren to make her move to become president. She has a very strong
chart which would help her battle the mudslingers that would surely
come during the campaign.

2014-06-22 Thread Bhairitu noozg...@sbcglobal.net [FairfieldLife]
As said before I watched about 4 episodes of "Orphan Black" until it
became a circus act for the Tatiana Maslany. The story telling fell by
the wayside but there are enough people enthralled by such acting that
it kept it's audience up.

I liked Spike Lee's version of "Oldboy" too. About the only thing that
is the same from the original is the lead character getting revenge.
It's available on Netflix WI as is "Salamander", a Belgian detective
series that I started watching last night.

Then we have "Dominion" which is a South African produced series on
Syfy. The pilot is available both on Syfy.com and Hulu. It's based on
"Legion" which was a movie I didn't much care for (after all I think the
Bible is a bunch of trader's tales that got exaggerated). The series
takes place in the future after "God has left Earth and angles arrive
but their not your friends." There are shades of "The Handmaid's Tale"
in it too.

interest to people here. But being me, I'll report on it anyway. :-)

This other series is called "Orphan Black," and it's from Canada. As
TV SciFi goes, it's actually a pretty OK show, with fairly intelligent
plotlines, but the thing that makes it most interesting is the female
actor who plays the lead roles, Tatiana Maslany. She has been
nominated for one Golden Globe award, and yesterday won her second
Critics' Choice award in a row for Best Performance by an Actress in a
Television Series.

And yes, I intentionally said "roles" above. The series is about
clones, and thus Tatiana gets to play 13 different characters. So far.
She's made every single one of them memorable. Good for her.

Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: What would a cool spiritual teaching be like?

2014-06-22 Thread emptyb...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Bari2-Two: How many years of training as a tantric do you have? Which
tradition?

We have been over this before. Apparently, you don’t remember. Why do I have
to repeat it?
This time save it into your FFL file. If you have question about it, you can
start there.

Most of my tantic training is in Buddhist tantra. My first teacher was Orgyen
Kusum Lingpa, a terton (mind-treasure revealer) from Golak, Tibet. My current
Buddhist teacher is Younge Khachab Rinpoche, a scholar-yogin (Geshe Rabjam or
Ph.D) and the 7th incarnation (tulku) of a well known past yogin.
http://www.youngedrodulling.org/index.shtml
http://www.youngedrodulling.org/index.shtml

FWIW, I’ve received about 35 empowerments (starting in 1993) to the practice
of various tantric Buddhist deities. The more significant point is that I
received extensive instruction for performing some of the most important
Nyingma devata-sadhanas. That includes the empowerment and extensive practice
of the Vajrakilaya sadhana of Ratna Lingpa from Kusum Lingpa. I also received
the complete Vajrasattva yoga-sadhana and mandala-visualization from HH
Khamtrul Rinpoche, which was also my lineage authorization to study and
practice Dzogchen. Of course, I have lots of sadhanas from my current teacher,
Khachab Rinpoche, especially a powerful Ekajati protector sadhana. When Khachab
first visited my house, he pointed at the traditionally carved Shiva Lingam and
said " Oh, original Tantra."

For Hindu Tantric puja, I am trained to perform Mahârudrâbhišekam following
the rule, method, formula (vidhi) of the Pâñcharâtra sampradâya. The standard
Pâñcharâtra method is to perform mental puja (manasa) first and then follow it
with the physical ritual. This involves requesting the deity’s retinue to
emanate into the implements of the puja as the mantras are invoked for each
implement. This procedure also involves distributing the mantras of the retinue
onto the body (deha-anga-nyasa) of the worshiper.

I began this practice by commissioning a yajña and thus was the yajamana
(principle sacrificer) for a MahâRudrâbhišekam in the spring of 1992. The yajña
was performed during a weekend retreat (with five other people joining). The
sacrifice began with an Agni-hotra to Ganesh along with supplications to the
shaktis of Agni-deva - Swaha-devi and Swadha-devi. During that time, the Devas
and their retinue were required to wait outside the yajña-hall, along with
their blindfolded murtis. They were thus unable to witness the preparations and
could only wait outside the boundaries until their presence was requested.
After finishing the Agni-hotra, the Devas were then worshiped in their united
presence as Shri Hiranyagarbha (the golden embryo). After that was completed,
the abhišeka began and the Devas were requested to descend and participate.
Another TM teacher was present and remarked that as each Deva was named and
requested to descend, he could feel the spiritual field above the yajña expand,
intensify with supernal radiance and envelope the activities. It was almost too
much to bear with an ordinary nervous system, even with (at that time) 20 yrs
of mediation, TTC and two bouts of long rounding. My only comparable experience
was the radiance of the hall in Fiuggi when we received the mantras of
initiation from MMY.

The rudra-yajña itself was performed by a pujari trained in the 1970’s in
Udupi, Karnataka by a Pañchratra Brahmana. (I’m in Texas and don’t have access
to my files for his name.) The pujari who performed the abhišekam for me and
then instructed me in daily performances was actually a Gaudiya Vaishnava,
although he felt that the Pañcharatra method was the most sattvic for this
Agamic method of worship.

That's all that needs to be said for now. You still think I'm "trying to
impress folks here that you know something”?

The rest of the personal story is incidental or as I like to say … om gomaya
gomaya swaha.
If you don’t know what that means then look it up.

[FairfieldLife] Unofficial Group Meditations in Fairfield

2014-06-22 Thread James Matthews jimonthem...@att.net [FairfieldLife]
Hi Folks. My spouse and I are visiting FF in a couple of weeks. We both were
involved in the TM movement throughout the 80's to about 1994 (in Fairfield
from about 1989-1994), but have had zero involvement with the movement since
then. We have continued with TM (not the sidhis) over the past 20 years as we
raised a family, ran a business, and such.

Anyway, we are now at that time when family are on their own and we're thinking
of what's next for us. From what we've read about Fairfield, it seems that it
might be worth checking out (thus our upcoming visit).

My question for anyone here who might have some information: Is there any
'unofficial' group meditation program (TM) in Fairfield on a regular basis?
We're assuming that 1) because we have no-one to recommend us (which at least
was the way it used to be way back when) and 2) because we are both TM teachers
who don't practice the sidhis, we will never be allowed to join any 'official'
movement group meditations. Also, for many years we have been practicing 40
minutes of TM twice a day (not 20 minutes).

Any information or leads would be appreciated.

Since I found this group a week ago, I've been browsing here and there. There
seems to be quite a range of opinions about TM/the movement/the politics, etc.
(to put it mildly...:).  We left all of that many years ago so we have no
interest in those conversations, but we appreciate what Maharishi gave us and
are very happy with TM.
Best,
Jim

So there's a little truth for ya, so eyeball to eyeball, how'z'bout ya give us

the last week's posts here and you'll get all the education you can stand about
the state of affairs wutz am around town.

Fairfield is a good town with good people who are now processing across a
spectrum of existential intents. From true believers to outcasts with a wicket
grudge who survive there via 1,000 enterprises. You'll find a welcoming
community of the still-meditating, and those off-spectrum types will leave ya
alone for the most part.

And, hey, Jai Guru Dev!

Note: The true believers here would describe me in a disdaining manner, so
these words are being shouted from the wrong side of the tracks, but you asked
specific questions and you'll get the answers here. Yep, ya will. Be
interesting to see who comes forward firstly.

I don't live in FF anymore, but I know 20 folks who do, and they're all
happy-enough with the scenario for the nonce. If you are sincere, ho boy, I
can't suggest you engage the calloused crew here -- they can be as stubborn

[FairfieldLife] Re: Unofficial Group Meditations in Fairfield

2014-06-22 Thread nablusoss1008
Hello James,
You seem to be a honest soul who preffers to stay out of negativity and have
been regular in meditation so there would be no reason why you should not be
able to join group meditations. The question is if such groups excist for
TM'ers only. Simply contact the MUM course office to find out while you
contemplate whether it's now time to learn the TM-Sidhis and join the big
groups in the Domes. I haven't been in the Domes in Fairfield for 20 years
myself but I have friends who travel over there regularily just to meditate in
the big group and their reports from the effect of being in such a big group
are simple marvelous.
Good luck to you and
Jai Guru Dev

Anyway, we are now at that time when family are on their own and we're
thinking of what's next for us. From what we've read about Fairfield, it seems
that it might be worth checking out (thus our upcoming visit).

Best,
Jim
