Continuing Our Campaign to Create Harmony and Coherence for the Nation
Specially selected weekly Maharishi videos for Sidhas and Governors: Starts
Sat. Dec. 5 just before Group Program

Dear US Sidhas and Governors,

I would like to express my deep appreciation to everyone who has been joining
our nationwide group practice of the TM® and TM‑Sidhi® programs.

We have received wonderful feedback from many of you.

“I didn’t anticipate just how powerful it would be to do my TM and TM-Sidhi
practice with the large group across the country. I found that my experiences
were richer and deeper, and that wonderful, blissful feeling stayed with me
long after my program was over. I decided to make group practice a priority,
and it has paid off in so many ways.” —M.K.
As our nation continues to face uniquely challenging health, economic, and
political changes, we would like to urge everyone to continue this
initiative—with even greater force.

This week’s video
To kick off the Knowledge Series, we’ll enjoy the first 40 minutes of this
beautiful video from May 5, 1992: “Maharishi Reviews the World Situation and

In this talk, Maharishi reminds us of the importance of remaining connected to
that unshakable field of Para—the field of pure consciousness—which is
untouched by the surface turmoil of life.

[FairfieldLife] From Chetana Daniels, Nurse Practitioner in the University of Iowa Medical Intensive Care Unit

2020-11-12 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Forwarded from a dear friend:

This was posted by Chetana Daniels (daughter of Fairfield’s Susan and Bob
Daniels) who’s a Nurse Practitioner in the University of Iowa Medical Intensive
Care Unit:

Having one of our parents admitted to our ICU is our worst nightmare. What is
an even bigger nightmare is the possibility that our sick parent won't be able
to receive the highest level of care because the hospital is overrun.. This is
what we are facing now. Never in my 5+ years in the MICU have I seen a waiting
list as long as we have. We are opening another 10 ICU beds next Monday, but we
have enough patients seeking care at UIHC to fill them today. With the way
things are going across the state, we will soon be making decisions about who
will receive care and who we will have to deny. The kind of moral distress this
is going to cause healthcare workers is enough to make them find a new career.
My biggest fear is that I will see the name of someone from my community on the
wait list, and they will be denied or delayed a transfer long enough to
negatively impact their chances of a meaningful recovery. Please do whatever
you can to stay home, wear good masks, wash your hands, and make your family do
the same.

[FairfieldLife] Fwd: Message from Adrian Daller who just tested positive for COVID

Forwarded from a dear friend:

This was posted by Adrian Daller of Fairfield IA. Read and take heed:

Nate and I tested positive for COVID even though we've been extremely cautious
- masks outdoors, rarely going in buildings, homeschooling, tiny bubble of
people we were seeing who were equally cautious. We've taken a financial hit
because of these choices but are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads
and food on the table. We're asymptomatic so far, and our kids tested negative,
but we could have given it to family members who we were cautiously seeing
after months apart. They all tested negative, but we spent several days with
the very real possibility that we could have given it to elderly family
members. And the only reason we got tested is because someone else in our
bubble tested positive. Otherwise we never would have known. We thought of
ourselves as the safe people who were following all the rules..

People who know me well, know why we made the choice to be this cautious but
it's nobody's business, really. I wish I didn't have to prove why we're being
cautious -- that knowing folks in your community have their reasons for trying
to stay healthy could be enough of a reason to be cautious yourself. I wish
that my community members were willing to take the precautions to keep others
safe instead of refusing because of political stance or because you personally
don't believe this is the right way deal with a pandemic, or you have your own
theory about it that differs from what doctors are recommending. That's all
your prerogative, but I still believe it's possible to take the precautions as
best you can out of compassion for those around you. I know there are those who
say, "well, we're all gonna get it anyway," and choose to continue as normal.
But when you make that choice, you're making it for your entire community,
including people with health conditions and others more at-risk than you may be
(and there have been cases of reinfection in our own county).

There is a very real possibility that you could be carrying the virus without
knowing and pass it to someone - or someone's relative - who dies from it.

I know there are people who have to go to work or your business will close. Or
you'll lose your job and won't have a way to sustain yourself or your family.
Or your kids have to go to school. There are many who need help with small
children - can you imagine staying by yourself indoors with a toddler for
months on end? Plenty of very legit and unavoidable reasons to be around
others. But those who DO have a choice have the opportunity to play it even
safer for the benefit of those who don't.

I mainly wanted to post this because we're going into several months of more
indoor time, lowered immunity, and family gatherings around the holidays. If
you have the choice, please think about prioritizing the safety of those around
you over the quality of your lifestyle over the coming months. Consider
cancelling gatherings. Again, I am well aware that many of you do not have the
option to completely quarantine yourself. I'm writing this for those of you who
do have that choice. 💗

[FairfieldLife] Time: Why Political Opposites in the U.S. Despise Each Other

'We've Built the Most Toxic Marriage Ever': Why Political Opposites in the U.S.
Despise Each Other

BY BELINDA LUSCOMBE
 OCTOBER 29, 2020 3:17 PM EDT
Americans clearly do not agree about the best solutions to the country’s
biggest problems. But while those disagreements are fierce, they are not as
strong as their feelings of distrust, dislike and disdain for people who belong
to the opposing political party. In fact, Democrats and Republicans have
developed such harsh antipathy for their political opposites that it exceeds
the level of camaraderie they feel for those who vote the same way. It is these
personal antipathies more than differing political beliefs that are driving
Americans’ divisions.

These are the findings from a new report
 by a group of
social scientists from 11 universities and six different disciplines—political
science, psychology, sociology, economics, management and computational social
science—who did a review of the literature from each of their areas of
expertise to see what the social sciences had to say about America’s current
political divisions. The study, which was published on Oct. 29 in Science, was
co-led by Northwestern University professor of social psychology Eli Finkel,
whose area of expertise is actually marriage and interpersonal relationships.

For the first time, say the researchers, people’s animosity toward their
political opponents exceeds their attachment to those who lean the same way.
Finkel and his colleagues point to the American National Election Survey
, which has been tallying the attitudes of voters
since the ’70s and has found that Americans’ level of warmth for their own
party has remained level; they have not become more loyal to or fonder of those
who share their ideology. But especially since 2012, their feelings for the
other party have become so cold that it is a more potent force than their party
fidelity. A 2020 NBER study
of nine Western democracies found the U.S. had the highest rate of polarization
 of any of them between
the people in opposing political parties.

Adherents to one party increasingly see those who vote the other way as not
just different but less moral, less trustworthy and unrecognizable to them..
It’s the combination of the three that makes the divisions so sharp. “It’s not
just they are in a different group,” says Finkel. “They’re alien from me,
they’re highly unlikeable and they’re doing immoral things. That creates the
sectarian disaster.”

Of course, many of these impressions are not based in fact. In 2015,
researchers asked
1,000 respondents on YouGov how many Republicans made more than $250,000 a
year.. The average guess was 38%. (It was 2%.) The survey takers also estimated
that almost a third of Democrats were LGBT. (About 6% are.) The impressions
were more inaccurate when respondents were guessing about the party they didn’t
belong to than when they were guessing about the one they did..

According to the Science study, these personal antipathies have been driven by
three trends. One is the rise of partisan media and social media, which enables
people to live in information and opinion bubbles, and makes those with
opposing views seem more abnormal. Another is the tendency of political
operatives and elites to identify and emphasize cudgel issues, such as abortion
or LGBTQ rights, to make the adherents of other parties seem less humane and on
the side of evil, in order to generate votes and for fundraising. “It’s
strategically valuable for political elites to find a way to drum up hatred for
the opposition,” says Finkel.

The final trend is the rise of the “mega-identity” in which other personality
traits and beliefs are brought in line with a political identity. “For the
first time in American history, immigrants, African Americans and other
marginalized communities, LGBT all align with one political orientation,” says
Finkel. “This is one of the major elements of othering. This highly
multicultural party is a little difficult for some people who for several
generations have lived in the same rural community, and are European-American.
They find them increasingly odd and different. At the same time people in the
multicultural party feel like, Well, you guys are not what America is now. You
also are weird and incomprehensible and an anachronism.” This “mega-identity”
works like a religion, in which adherents to a set of beliefs have strict rules
for inclusion and regard tho

Please forward this email to others in Jefferson County.

I hope this will be the last political email I send before the election Nov..
3rd.

Dear Jefferson County Voters,

Absentee ballots have been mailed and early voting has started.

NOTE: The Auditor’s office is open today (Saturday) until 5 PM, and next
Saturday 9 AM – 5 PM.

If you have submitted an absentee ballot request, please complete and return
it. You can mail it in, but starting Tuesday, Oct. 27th, I suggest that you
deliver it to the Auditor at the Courthouse to assure that it is counted on
November 3rd.
Note: You can bypass the tables where people may be voting and hand your ballot
(with signature on the envelop) to the staff inside the Auditor’s office.

If you have not submitted an absentee ballot request, just go to the Courthouse
and cast your ballot.

You can see a sample ballot here
. Scroll down through the
webpage to find the ballot for your voting precinct. Other voting info is also
on this linked page.

JUDGES and CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION: On the back of the ballot are places to
vote on retention of judges and a chance to indicate whether you want a
Constitutional Convention. This Public Measure 1 is on the ballot as mandated
by law. Please vote to retain the judges and vote “No” on the Constitutional
Convention question.
Rationale: We have good judges and I recommend not giving the Republican
Governor an opportunity to appoint partisan judges. The same goes for a
Constitutional Convention. We don’t need to amend Iowa’s Constitution and a
convention would give Republicans an opportunity to inscribe their extreme
agenda in the Constitution.

Candidate Forums: Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, forums happened
Tuesday, Oct. 6th for Jefferson County Sheriff and County Supervisors
, and Wednesday, Oct. 7th for
State Legislators . The forums
start about 15 minutes into the recordings, so scroll until you see the
participants on the stage. An earlier Iowa Press Debate between Democrat Rita
Hart and her Republican opponent Marionnette Miller-Meeks can be found here
.
Miller-Meeks, a true Trumpette, is currently our State Senator.

PRESIDENT, SENATOR, CONGRESSPERSON: Bernie made the case for voting for
Democrats in a marvelous speech .
Basically, he argued that we must repudiate Trump and his Republican enablers
and sycophants by electing Democrats for their social, economic and
environmental policies. He added that we have influence with Democrats, and
that he and others were working with Joe Biden’s people and will continue to
work with them after Joe is elected. I’d say the same for the other Democrats —
Theresa Greenfield for U.S. Senate and Rita Hart for 2ndDistrict
Representative. Theresa and Rita are qualified, solid players dedicated to the
wellbeing and success of all Iowans. Their opponents are dedicated Trump
supporters whose attack ads have been totally Trump-ish — gross distortions and
outright lies. Surely, I don’t need to say more. You can find info on Theresa
Greenfield’s platform on her website and
Facebook . Info on Rita Hart’s
platform is on her website and Facebook
.
FOOTNOTE: There are actually nine candidates for President/VP. Please don’t
waste your vote on any of the other seven, either out of conviction or as a
protest. Only Biden has a chance to oust Trump.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE — District 82, which encompasses the western two-thirds of
Jefferson County plus Van Buren and Davis Counties. Republicans control the
Iowa Legislature and Governor’s Mansion. They have been passing ALEC’s bills
supporting an extreme right-wing agenda. Let’s vote the Republicans out.

PHIL MILLER (D): Phil is a veterinarian and former president of the Fairfield
Community School District Board. He’s deeply committed to health, public
education and strengthening our rural economy, which includes factories, small
businesses, a large service sector, health care personnel, farmers and
agricultural workers. Phil also served for one year as our representative,
filling the vacancy left by the untimely death of Curt Hanson. He’s a
reasonable person who listens to all. He believes strongly in treating people
fairly with social justice and economic equality, and in respecting the
environment. You can learn more on his website

[FairfieldLife] Jefferson County Supervisors Race Endorsement

2020-10-10 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Forwarded from: Diane Rosenberg

Dear Friends,

This is a personal email from me.

I signed this letter along with 39 other Jefferson County residents endorsing
Susie Drish and Dee Sandquist for Jefferson County Supervisor. Please see why I
am voting for these two fine candidates and not CAFO owner Nick Adam. Feel free
to widely share.

Best,
Diane
---
Dear Jefferson County Voters:

Your vote for Jefferson County Board of Supervisors is consequential for the
future of our county. There is a stark difference among the candidates. There
are two seats to be filled. We urge you to vote for Susie Drish and Dee
Sandquist.

One candidate, Nick Adam, is the owner of two 5,000-head hog CAFOs
(Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) in Batavia and Eldon. These CAFOs were
built heedless of the expressed concerns of his neighbors, whose worst fears
became reality after the CAFOs were built.

Seventy-five neighbors formed a group, “Save Batavia and Eldon,” to try to stop
the CAFOs from being built, and they sued after the CAFOS were constructed when
the confinements impacted their health and quality of life. Although the suit
ended in a settlement, Iowa’s laws and regulations favor CAFO owners over their
neighbors, so those neighbors continue to suffer the consequences of living
near Adam’s CAFOs.

Adam is currently building another 5,000 head CAFO in Wapello County.

The effects of CAFOs on their neighbors are real. As Dr. James Merchant,
Professor Emeritus of Public Health and Medicine and Founding Dean of the
College of Public Health at the University of Iowa put it:

“CAFO neighbors suffer increased childhood asthma and adult asthma, bronchitis,
airway obstruction, nasal and eye irritation...(and) also suffer
odor-associated increases in stress, tension, depression, and confusion, and
decreases in measures of quality of life and well-being.”

Why is this important? County Boards of Supervisors can have some input into
whether or not hog CAFOs can be built in the county. They can assume the
authority to score Master Matrix evaluations of the suitability of a site for
CAFO construction, and they can appeal a large (2500 hogs+) construction permit
approved by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. We need supervisors who
can make these decisions objectively and are willing to listen to the concerns
of local citizens.

For the November 3 election, you will have the opportunity to vote for two
people to fill two positions on the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors. We
urge you to vote for Susie Drish (a Democrat) and Dee Sandquist (a Republican)
to fill those seats.

Susie Drish is a life-long resident of Jefferson County, a graduate of
Fairfield High School and Iowa State University and currently is a Jefferson
County farmer using sustainable farming practices. She has worked at the ISU
Diagnostic Veterinarian Lab, and for 39 years she worked as an Employment and
Training Specialist through Indian Hills Community College.

In that position, Drish provided resume, application, and interview-skills
development as part of the job training program for at-risk kids, low-income
workers, offenders, unemployed, and dislocated workers to improve their
employment opportunities.

She also interacted with community employers and school systems in the counties
she served to match students’ newly acquired skills with employers’ needs. She
managed large budgets for the training program. Drish is currently on the
Jefferson County Extension Board and the Jefferson County Mutual Insurance
Agency board.

Dee Sandquist grew up in Jefferson County on a family farm and, with her
husband, currently owns and operates a farm that employs conservation practices
to protect soil and water health. They raise hogs humanely, using the
sustainable (non-CAFO) Niman Ranch system. She has a master’s degree in
management and has career experience in managing people and services in
healthcare systems.

Dee has capably served one term as a Jefferson County Supervisor, demonstrating
a capacity to work with the full range of Jefferson County residents, a truly
valuable quality for a County Supervisor.

We endorse Susie Drish and Dee Sanquist for Jefferson County Supervisors and
urge you to vote for both of them on—or before—November 3..

Biden receives endorsement from Scientific American, magazine's first in
175-year history
The magazine’s editors said they were motivated to endorse Biden after seeing
how science has been ignored and politicized by President Donald Trump and his
administration.

By Denise Chow

Scientific American has endorsed Joe Biden for president, the first time the
venerable science magazine has backed a presidential candidate in its 175-year
history.

The endorsement was published in Scientific American’s October issue
,
in which the magazine’s editors explained their reasons for publicly
supporting Biden, adding that they “do not do this lightly.”

They said they were motivated to endorse Biden after seeing how science has
been ignored and politicized by President Donald Trump and his administration.

“The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S.
and its people — because he rejects evidence and science,” the editors wrote in
the endorsement. They cited, in particular, the president’s response to the
coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 195,000 Americans and
continues to be a public health emergency.

The endorsement comes with less than 50 days to go until the U.S. presidential
election and as the country juggles multiple crises in addition to the pandemic
— a prolonged economic downturn, catastrophic wildfires on the West Coast and
an intense Atlantic hurricane season.

The editors said Trump’s failure to develop a national strategy to fight the
pandemic helped accelerate the spread of the disease across the country and his
misrepresentations of the facts have done even more damage.

“His lies encouraged people to engage in risky behavior, spreading the virus
further, and have driven wedges between Americans who take the threat seriously
and those who believe Trump's falsehoods,” they wrote.

But their concerns went beyond the president’s response to the pandemic and
included Trump’s attempts to end the Affordable Care Act, his commitment to
dismantling environmental protections and policies, and his proposed cuts in
funding to agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National
Science Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Biden has prioritized climate change throughout his campaign. In July, he
unveiled a $2 trillion plan

that experts said would put the country on an ambitious path to building a
clean energy economy. The plan, which includes the goal of achieving a 100
percent clean electricity standard by 2035, earned high praise from climate
scientists and environmental advocates, who said the proposal would also help
repair the country’s reputation internationally.

Though much of Biden’s plan would require approval from Congress, the
magazine’s editors said the candidate “is acutely aware that we must heed the
abundant research showing ways to recover from our present crises and
successfully cope with future challenges.”

They added that Trump’s many attacks on science and the scientific agencies
designed to protect the country guided their decision to endorse a presidential
candidate for the first time.

“The 2020 election is literally a matter of life and death,” they tweeted
Tuesday . “We urge you to
vote for health, science and Joe Biden for President.”

New England Journal of Medicine: 'Dangerously incompetent' politicians must go
While the 35 editors who signed the editorial did not call out President Trump
by name, the article is filled with allusions to his actions.

The New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious medical
journals in the world, on Wednesday broke with a nearly two-century tradition
of avoiding politics to lambast U.S. politicians for their handling of the
coronavirus pandemic.

In a first for the journal, the editors called for Americans to vote out
leaders who have not done enough to address the pandemic.

“When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time,
our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously
incompetent,” the editors wrote. “We should not abet them and enable the deaths
of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep thei

Please forward this message to your Jefferson County friends.

There was a defining moment in the Oct. 6th forum for candidates for Jefferson
County Sheriff. The question put to the candidates was: "What was your personal
response to the death of George Floyd?"

Deputy Tracy Vance responded: "I was appalled. That was murder and that officer
acted with malice and was inappropriate." He went on to explain that if he were
Sheriff, the officer would be held accountable and his Office would be fully
transparent about what happened.

Chief Deputy Bart Richmond responded: "I didn't jump to any conclusions. I
didn't react like the rest of the country." He went on to say that Floyd might
have had drugs in his system, which is blaming the victim for what happened and
letting the police officer be the judge, jury and executioner.

Well, the videos of the incident made the situation perfectly clear. It was
another example of aggressive policing that resulted in the unnecessary death
of a black man.

We don't want that to happen here.

It's clear that Bart represents the old school, good ol' boys authoritarian
policing that has suppressed minority and poor communities since the founding
of this country.

Tracy, on the other hand, represents community-oriented policing. He's proposed
establishing a Citizen’s Advisory Council to facilitate communication and
transparency between the Sheriff's Office and concerned citizens in any
situation.

Yes, these remarks by the candidates clearly distinguish them. I'll vote for
Tracy Vance for Sheriff.

The Sheriff forum begins at 13 minutes into the recording. The question of the
death of George Floyd begins at 49:48.

[FairfieldLife] Goldman Sachs & Moody's Analytics: Democratic Sweep For More Jobs, Stronger Economy

2020-10-06 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Main Points:

"All else equal, such a blue wave [Democratic President, Senate & House] would
likely prompt us to upgrade our forecasts," Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan
Hatzius wrote in a Monday report.
It's true that if Democrats sweep into power early next year, it would likely
translate to higher taxes and regulation. Such a reversal from the Trump agenda
could eat into corporate profits and the earnings for affluent families. But
Joe Biden is also promising a bonanza of government spending

that, coupled with extremely low interest rates, would likely speed up the
economy.
Goldman Sachs wrote that a blue wave would "sharply raise the probability" of a
fiscal stimulus package of at least $2 trillion shortly after the January 20
inauguration. The bank also cited Biden's longer-term spending plans on
infrastructure, climate, health care and education.

Moody's Analytics

 found

that Biden's economic proposals, if enacted, would create 7.4 million more
jobs

than would Trump's. The economy would return to full employment in the second
half of 2022, nearly two years earlier than under Trump's plan, Moody's said.
"The economic outlook is strongest under the scenario in which Biden and the
Democrats sweep Congress and fully adopt their economic agenda," wrote Moody's
economists led by Mark Zandi, who advised Senator John McCain during the 2008
presidential race.

Goldman Sachs: A Democratic sweep would mean faster economic recovery

New York (CNN Business) President Donald Trump is once again warning voters
that Democrats would "shut our economy and jobs down" if they win in November.

Goldman Sachs is telling its clients the exact opposite.
Just hours after Trump's all-caps Monday morning tweet
predicting
economic disaster
,
Goldman economists pointed out that polls

"suggest a 'blue wave' in which Democrats gain unified control of Washington
is becoming more likely" -- and they're not suggesting investors dump stocks..
In fact, "all else equal, such a blue wave would likely prompt us to upgrade

Taken together, this spending "would at least match the likely longer-term tax
increases on corporations and upper-income earnings," Goldman Sachs wrote.
"It would likely result in substantially easier US fiscal policy, a reduced
risk of renewed trade escalation, and a firmer global growth outlook," the
report said.

Dear Jefferson County Voter,

Here’s my email with the information that could be useful in completing your
general election ballot.

Absentee ballots will be mailed andearly voting starts tomorrow, Monday,
October 5th. Yippee, it’s almost over!

If you have submitted an absentee ballot request, you’ll receive your ballot
this week. If you have not submitted an absentee ballot request, you still can,
but I recommend that you just go to the Courthouse and cast your ballot. That
way, you’ll know that your ballot is in the Auditor’s hands.

If you receive an absentee ballot, please complete it and return it right away,
either by mail or deliver it yourself, to the Auditor at the Courthouse.

You can see a sample ballot here
:
http://www.jeffersoncountyiowa.com/elections.htm. Scroll down to find the
ballot for your voting precinct.

Candidate Forums: Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, this Tuesday, Oct. 6th
for Jefferson County Sheriff and County Supervisors, andWednesday, Oct. 7th for
State Legislators. The forums start at 6pm and are streamed online.. Info here
:
https://www..facebook.com/events/324577118816336/?event_time_id=324577125483002.

JUDGES and CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION: On the back of the ballot are places to
vote on retention of judges and a chance to indicate whether you want a
Constitutional Convention. This vote is mandated by law. Please vote to retain
the judges and vote “No” on the Constitutional Convention question.

PRESIDENT, SENATOR, CONGRESSPERSON: For their regressive and often inhumane
policies on health, immigration, the social safety net, white nationalism,
racism, xenophobia, taxation, politization of judicial appointments,
environmental issues and denying the social and economic consequences of global
warming, we have to vote out the Republicans. Bernie made the case for voting
for Democrats in a marvelous speech
 last week:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAAWxZGHJNo. Basically, he argued that we must
repudiate Trump and his Republican enablers and sycophants by electing
Democrats for their social, economic and environmental policies. He added that
we have influence with Democrats, and that he and others were working with Joe
Biden’s people and will continue to work with them after Joe is elected. I’d
say the same for the other Democrats — Theresa Greenfield for U.S. Senate and
Rita Hart for 2ndDistrict Representative. Theresa and Rita are qualified, solid
players dedicated to the wellbeing and success of all Iowans. Their opponents
are dedicated Trump supporters whose attack ads have been totally Trump-ish —
gross distortions and outright lies. Surely, I don’t need to say more. You can
find info on Theresa Greenfield’s platform on her website
, https://greenfieldforiowa.com, and Facebook
,
https://www.facebook.com/GreenfieldForIowa. Info on Rita Hart’s platform is on
her website , https://www.ritahart.com, and Facebook
,
https://www.facebook.com/RitaHart4Iowa. You can hear the candidates debate this
Tuesday and Wednesday. An earlier Iowa Press Debate between Rita and her
Republican opponent Marionnette Miller-Meeks can be found here
,

https://www.iowapublicradio.org/ipr-news/2020-09-11/watch-candidates-rita-hart-and-iowa-sen-marianette-miller-meeks-debate.
Miller-Meeks is currently our State Senator.
FOOTNOTE: There are actually nine candidates for President/VP. Please don’t
waste your vote on any of the other seven, either out of conviction or as a
protest. Only Biden has a chance to oust Trump and become the next president.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE: I’m going to talk only about District 82, which
encompasses the western two-thirds of Jefferson County plus Van Buren and Davis
Counties. If you vote in a different district, you’re going to have to do your
own research, but I make the same argument I did about the higher offices:
Republicans control the Iowa Legislature and Governor’s Mansion. They have been
passing ALEC’s bills supporting an extreme right-wing agenda. Let’s vote the
Republicans out.

[FairfieldLife] MIU's Dr John Fagan publishes ground-breaking research detecting gene-edited GM crop

2020-09-12 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Check out this 4-minute video! John is a great hero!!!

From: Susel M. Faganmailto:suselfa...@yahoo.com>>

Dear Friends,

As some you may have heard, for more than two years, Dr. Fagan has been working
on a challenging research project--to create the first test to specifically
detect a gene-edited GMO, a euphemism for a new class of GMOs. Proponents in
the biotech industry maintain that these DNA alterations can not be detected,
and therefore can not be traced or tested or regulated, and should not even be
called GMOs. However, they definitely are GMOs, and create the same risks as
the earlier GMOs, although maybe more so: huge disruption of the genome,
unexpected side effects, environmental and health damage, toxic influences, etc.

Other scientists who have been working on the risks of GMOs and on that
research front for years have called this work historic. The study was
published in the EU on Monday, and in the US on Tuesday, September 6.

Here is a link to a four-minute video overview.

https://vimeo.com/454416515

The article below was published in GMWatch, a British GM watchdog site, and
provides a well-written overview.

There is also a website related to the publication of the research:

Warm regards,
Susel

First open source detection test for a gene-edited GM crop published

"We have developed this test because authorities have failed to do so" – German
association Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG)
A group of non-governmental organisations, non-GMO food associations and a food
retailer have announced that the first-ever public detection method for a
gene-edited crop has been successfully developed and published.[1] The
gene-edited crop in question is a herbicide-tolerant rapeseed produced by US
company Cibus (SU Canola).

The new research refutes claims by the biotech industry and some regulators
that new genetically modified (GM) crops engineered with gene editing are
indistinguishable from similar, non-GM crops and therefore cannot be
regulated.[2] Some such claims are published here
.

The new method detects a herbicide-tolerant rapeseed variety that was developed
using gene editing, a new form of genetic engineering. It allows European Union
(EU) countries to carry out checks to prevent this unauthorised GM crop from
entering EU food and feed supply chains illegally. Until now, EU countries were
unable to test their imports for the presence of this GM rapeseed, which is
grown in parts of the US and Canada.

The new method also allows food companies, retailers, certification bodies and
national food safety inspectors to verify that products do not contain this GM
rapeseed.

The new detection test shows that the claimed difficulties of detecting
gene-edited organisms are overstated. It represents a specific detection method
for a gene-edited crop in which only small alterations (point mutations) have
been made. Moreover, the test distinguishes this crop from genetically similar
crops developed via chemical mutagenesis – in this case BASF’s Clearfield
rapeseed.

Heike Moldenhauer, EU policy advisor at the German Association Food without
Genetic Engineering (VLOG), said (https://www.detect-gmo.org/press-release
): “The new detection method is a
milestone in EU consumer and business protection. Authorities can now start
identifying unauthorised gene-edited crops. This helps beekeepers, farmers,
breeders, feed and food processors and retailers keep these new GMOs out of
their supply chains and meet consumers’ demand for non-GMO food”.

Alexander Hissting of VLOG added, "We have developed this test because
authorities have failed to do so."

The new method was published in the scientific journal Foods after peer
review.[3] It detects SU Canola, an oilseed rape variety engineered by the
American gene-editing company Cibus to withstand certain herbicides.[4]
Environment Agency Austria (Umweltbundesamt), a member of the European Network
of GMO Laboratories, has validated the method, which meets all EU legal
standards.

The European Court of Justice ruled two years ago that gene-edited organisms
fall under the EU’s GMO laws. The Court said excluding new GMOs from the
regulations would go against the purpose of the legislation. It also said this
would fail to respect the precautionary principle that is enshrined in the EU’s
founding treaties and is the basis for the EU’s food safety rules.[5]

The new test shows that EU law governing GM organisms (GMOs) can also be
applied to new types of GMOs produced through gene editing, maintaining the
EU’s high food safety standards.

Greenpeace EU food policy director Franziska Achterberg said: “The EU’s highest
court has ruled that gene-edited crops are regulated under

Dear Jefferson County Voter:

You may not have heard that there is a vote TODAY, Tuesday, September 8th from
7am to 8pm to renew the Revenue Purpose Statement for the Fairfield Community
School District. Normally, voting for renewal would be “automatic,” but our
State Representative Jeff Shipley has sent an email encouraging people to vote
‘no’ to “ensure the School Board collaborates with Concerned Parents moving
forward.” Concerned Parents, a group of disgruntled parents, oppose the School
District’s decisions regarding the risks of spreading the novel coronavirus..
Shipley doesn’t think the virus is a big deal, he’d like to catch the virus and
get over it so he’d be immune, and he’d like the kids back in the classrooms
full time — who wouldn’t, but most of us want that done safely. So…

Please Vote "Yes" TODAY, Tuesday, Sept. 8th (locations below). With this effort
to undermine the School System, your vote is definitely needed. Quality schools
are needed to assure the high quality of life in Jefferson County..

The Revenue Purpose Statement has to be renewed so that the School District can
use the SAVE tax funds to upgrade and improve facilities past 2031, the date of
the original law and our original Revenue Purpose Statement. In 2019, the
legislature extended the SAVE tax till 2051 but we need the Revenue Purpose
Statement renewed as well. So, no new tax, no new purpose, just renewing to
extend the date.

Phil Miller, candidate for the State Representative seat Shipley currently
holds, said today: “Having recently served on the school board and seen how
beneficially that money is used to provide our children a quality education, I
encourage everyone to vote yes on this proposal. This will go a long way in
strengthening our public schools.”

This shouldn't be a political issue, but it is, so put on your mask and please
vote “yes.” Oh, and don’t forget to wash your hands when you return home.

Thank you for supporting quality public education in Jefferson County,

4. College towns around America are becoming coronavirus hot spots.

About 100 college communities

across the country, including Iowa City, above, have seen an increase in
coronavirus cases in recent weeks as students return for the fall semester. The
potential spread of the virus off-campus has deeply affected workplaces,
schools, governments and other institutions in local communities.

In the U.S., at least 51,000 coronavirus cases and at least 60 deaths from the
virus can be traced to American colleges and universities, a Times survey found

Dear Staff,

We are off to a great start this year. As you know from President Hagelin's
letter last week, we had only one student test positive. You may not know that
Iowa City and Ames now have the highest per capita cases of COVID in the world.
Please share this with your team mates and remind them that we are asking
everyone to stay within Jefferson County. If your have a doctor's appointment
or some other urgent reason to leave the county, you should get approval from
HR first so that proper arrangements can be made upon your return. The nurse
will determine if you have to be tested or retested and spend some time in
isolation upon your return.

We want to maintain the safety of our community by continuing to be vigilant.
It is our responsibility to be sure everyone in our offices and our buildings
is wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. I think mostly everyone is
being very cooperative, but if you know of a co-worker who refuses to wear a
mask, you can contact Security of HR and we will support you.

Security is going to be issuing tickets and imposing fines for ANYONE not
wearing a mask in a university building or when walking or talking with a group
outside, even if they are observing social distancing. You may walk or run
alone or ride a bike without a mask, but please put one on if you stop to talk
to someone.

Thank you all so much for your patience, creativity and cheerful cooperation in
these challenging times.

White House Covid task force report shows dire warnings to Iowa, the state with
the highest case rate this week

(CNN) A White House coronavirus task force report sent to officials in Iowa
this week warns of dire new case increases

across rural and urban areas of the state and calls for a mask mandate, the
closure of bars and a plan from universities as the pandemic intensifies in the
Midwest.

CNN has obtained the 9-page August 30 report for the state, first reported
by
the Des Moines Register, from the Iowa Department of Public Health. The task
force releases state-by-state reports each week to governors' offices, and has
so far declined to make them publicly available.
The report says that Iowa is in the task force-defined "red zone" and warns
that the state has the highest rate of cases in the US, which increased by
77.4% from the previous week.
"Iowa is in the red zone for cases, indicating more than 100 new cases per
100,000 population last week, with the highest rate in the country. Iowa is in
the red zone for test positivity, indicating a rate above 10%, with the 5th
highest rate in the country," the report says, an increase in both cases and
test positivity over the last week.

FDA grants emergency use authorization to quick, inexpensive saliva-based
Covid-19 diagnostic test
>From CNN Health’s Lauren Mascarenhas
The US Food and Drug Administration announced Saturday that it has granted
emergency use authorization to a Covid-19 diagnostic test that uses a new,
inexpensive method of processing saliva samples.
The test, called SalivaDirect, has been found to be highly sensitive, yielding
similar outcomes to nasopharyngeal swabbing. Under the observation of a health
care worker, saliva is self-collected in a sterile container without the use of
a specific swab or collection device.

The molecular diagnostic test can yield results in under three hours,
researchers said, and up to 92 samples can be tested at once. Researchers said
the test costs only a couple dollars for reagents, and they expect labs to
charge only about $10 per sample.

The method is being used by the National Basketball Association to test
asymptomatic people for coronavirus. The NBA was among the groups that funded
the research.

“The SalivaDirect test for rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 is yet another testing
innovation game changer that will reduce the demand for scarce testing
resources," Adm. Dr. Brett Giroir, the White House Covid-19 testing
coordinator, said in a statement.
Looking to the future: The FDA has authorized four other coronavirus tests
which use saliva samples. Emergency use authorization allows the FDA to
greenlight a product to test for coronavirus on an expedited basis.

… The [COVID-19] disaster in the US is perhaps best expressed in comparison to
other industrialized nations. States such as South Korea suffocated the virus
with aggressive measures while Trump was still denying its threat. France and
Italy suffered terribly, but science-based lockdowns kept in place until the
pathogen was suppressed -- unlike the premature state openings demanded by
Trump -- worked. Aggressive foreign governments from Australia to Hong Kong to

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THOSE WANTING TO OPT OUT

You have until July 31, 2020 to opt out

I know some of you are bothered that you were told that you only have until
today to confirm your opt out. But you actually have until the end of July..
Around June 24th Alliant’s senior attorney told us in writing that you have
until the end of July. If you heard anything different from some account rep at
Alliant or anyone in our community, it is not the case.

Also, apparently many people do not know why Alliant was asking for
confirmation of your opt out status and believe there was an ulterior motive to
take away your opt out meter. Any rumors or statements that Alliant did not
need to get another opt out from you were mistakes. Maybe, if you knew the
reason Alliant sent the new opt out notices, there might not have been so much
anger and stress resulting from the situation, and am sorry I was not involved
enough to correct any misunderstandings.

I am not trying to defend Alliant’s screw up about the multiple notices, etc.,
but by lawAlliant had to get confirmation of your opt out selection. This is
because after you opted out, the Board ruled that opt out customers would have
to accept estimated bills for 10 months of the year and only 2 meter readings
(once every 6 months). That keeps our monthly costs low (and if you have paid
too much as a result of the estimates, you will get a credit), but according to
the Iowa Administrative Code, Alliant is only permitted to give estimated bills
for more than 3 consecutive months unless it gets the customer’s consent. The
new notices were to get that consent and also to let people know they could
also now opt out to a reduced transmission smart meter without any monthly
cost. Alliant made mistakes in sending multiple notices, but not in its
requirement to get another opt out confirmation, but I think the high road is
just to be as tolerant as we can.

As you can see from the attachment
,
Alliant is trying to get everyone opted out who wants to. And Jeff Turnbull
and I have had good success with Alliant by writing reasoned letters to Alliant
arguing that there should be no smart meters on garages or in entry ways or
corridors of residences. Some of the lower management at Alliant believed that
since these areas were not living quarters, the rules required smart meters.
When we got to the senior people at Alliant, they realized they needed to
change their position for us. Alliant also agreed on its own to all the rules
Jon Lipman and I were advocating for deciding if an analog meter was in a
failed lot. All of this was accomplished without Board intervention. So, where
it can be done, it is always good to try to work things out with Alliant in
advance of going to battle (there is something to be said for the sentiment of
making the enemy your friend).

The bottom line is that Alliant, by law, had to ask for another opt out. The
right to opt out is permanent. This means that if by mistake or any other
reason, your opt out meter is taken without your consent, you can contact
Alliant and get an opt out meter in a short time (although if you lose an
analog meter unless Alliant is clearly at fault, you may be stuck with a
digital opt out meter). I know some people were putting notices adjacent to
their meter that it shouldn’t be taken. That may help prevent mistakes by
Alliant, but it is not a substitute for opting out this final time. You do have
to opt out again, so please make sure this message gets to everyone. It is
possible the Board will gives even more time beyond the end of July, but to be
safe opt-out by then.

The online form is at alliantenergy.com/nonstandardmeter
.
But if you are having trouble opting out online or by phone, you can opt out
by email, which Alliant confirmed with me yesterday would be fine. To do this
send your email to n...@alliantenergy.com

[FairfieldLife] Recent surprises re: COVID-19

2020-07-11 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Scientists are learning a lot more about COVID-19. Here are some recent
surprises:
It can last for several months:
https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/06/covid-19-coronavirus-longterm-symptoms-months/612679/
It could cause a wave of brain damage
:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/08/health/coronavirus-brain-damage-study-intl-hnk-scli-scn/index.html
It damages not only the lungs, but the kidneys, liver, heart, brain and nervous
system, skin and gastrointestinal tract:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/10/health/coronavirus-entire-body-effects-columbia/index.html
Autopsies revealed blood clots in "almost every organ":
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/10/health/what-coronavirus-autopsies-reveal/
Transmission rates are up to 20 times higher in indoor dining compared to
outdoor dining: From a doctor interviewed on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on July 7th.
Increased numbers of confirmed cases are not due to increased testing.
As testing increases, you’d expect the positive tests to decrease.
But Arizona’s positivity rate has risen from 5% positive to 27% positive since
early May:
https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow/watch/desperate-measures-in-arizona-as-covid-19-overwhelms-hospitals-87259717998
Floriday’s Miami-Dade County reported a 33.5% positivity rate yesterday:
https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/coronavirus-pandemic-07-10-20-intl/h_b9b1699e07df04a026c9ff9bf5b9ff00
These increases also indicate there are not enough tests.
Doctors are learning how to save more lives. From a doctor interviewed on
MSNBC’s Morning Joe on July 7th:
"In March I didn't know how to save the patient's life on a ventilator with
COVID-19 as well as I do now, as well as my colleagues do now. I know now that
if you're young, if you're old, then you come in and you need a vent, you
probably need to be on a blood thinner. I probably need to give you steroids
now at high doses. I didn't know that even a few months ago. And then you also
need to be put on your belly—we call it "prone positioning"—if you're on life
support, on a ventilator needing assistance to breathe. These are interventions
that have allowed us to save more lives amongst those that are critically ill.
So yes, treatments are better."
I wish you lasting good health!

Our President and Vice President are serious when they say that the rise in

Why not just solve the world wide population problem by passing into law that
there cannot be any more pregnancy tests. No more tests. No more babies.
Simple. Brilliant.

And when the population comes under control, gradually allow pregnancy tests to
resume to allow the population to increase.

The IUB said today that they are looking into the matter, and they asked
everyone to file comments or complaints into the case docket, as our last
letter advised.

The IUB senior staff member who we spoke with emphasized that the Board will
not have any way to understand the experiences of the community with the
Alliant mailings, unless people file complaints.

The IUB needs to see the volume of customers that have a problem with this
mailing, so everyone should file right away if they are not happy with any
aspect of the mailing or the fact that now it has become necessary to opt-out
once again.

On two occasions the Consumer Advocate for Iowa, not only encouraged the
community to complain to the IUB, but insisted that it was the only way to
succeed.

We have included below a list of the feed-back that has come in directly to us
about this. Feel free to use this as a guide for your own complaint. The link
to make your complaint is below the list.

A few of the complaints we have received are:

1. The statement that we must opt-out again within 30 days or you will get a
smart meter, can only be interpreted as a threat, since we have spent years in
court fighting against smart meters, including the long list of undesirable
smart meter features.

2. We thought we had settled this with the utility already. What is this all
about?

3. The 30 day time frame is unreasonably short for any process such as this..
It creates fear and puts the consumers into a panic, especially since the
consequence of not succeeding in re-opting out is receiving the very meter that
this group of people have already said they do not want.

4. Further, the imposition of a short time frame in the light of the global
disruption from a virus, when some people may be away from home and forcibly
sequestered in states or countries and cannot respond, is much more than
unreasonable.

5. There are significant problems with the Alliant website/web-form. It can
easily be filled out but for many people it has not been possible to Send or
Save the form data that they entered.

6. Alliant in the past has lost records of opt-out customers. Alliant has:
-- put opt-out customers onto smart meter install lists,
--given customers who have completed multiple opt-out procedures a smart meter,
--resisted and often refused to return their Analogs, even when taken by
accident,
---the result has been that people are reticent to take on this opt-out process
again.

7. There were apparently several different letters with different content sent.
Some of the letters allowed retaining an analog meter, and others did not
include the analog meter option. Some customers received multiple letters, and
some who still have their analog meter received the wrong letter, that did not
allow the option to keep their analog. This has been frustrating and confusing
for many.

8. Some customers who received the wrong letter have mistakenly believed that
they no longer have the right to keep their analog (which is not the case).

9. Unfortunately some have already filed their request for a digital meter with
Alliant, which is not only a problem for that individual who will have the
dirty electricity from the digital when they could have kept their analog, but
is also a problem for that person's neighbor who will also receive the dirty
electricity through a shared transformer.

 Use Case Docket # SPU-2018-0007

With regard to the option of the “low pulsing smart meter”, here is the reality
of how many pulses you and your family will receive if you choose the
low-pulsing smart meter option (please note: we DO NOT recommend this option):

In the IUB Hearing last August, one piece of evidence that was presented by us,
was the work of Dr. Ronald Powell, Physicist, on the number of pulses of smart
meters, where he included the EMF/RF from neighbor's smart meters.

Rather than the advertised "once per month" or a "few pulses per month" from a
meter on the side of your house, Dr. Powell found that a home or business is
affected by smart meters within a 100 yard distance from your location (100
yards in all directions).

In application of Dr. Powell's study to the downtown Fairfield area, it was
found that many locations in the downtown area, could be experiencing 10,000's
of pulses per week, when using these so-called "low pulsing" approaches. For
other close neighborhoods, such as sub-divisions, similar “pulsing” numbers
will apply.

[FairfieldLife] Fwd: a note from Robert Palma Re smart meters

2020-06-23 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Dear Friends,

Here is an eminently clear and reasonable email from Robert Palma about Alliant
Energy’s recent mailings.

Robert is a highly accomplished electrical engineer who led large teams
developing satellites and now lives in Fairfield, where his businesses include
Midwest Research and RFReduce.com.

Forwarded from: Engineer

Dear Friends,

I am responding to numerous communications from family and friends that were
received via email and telephone, concerning the recent mailings from the
Alliant utility with regard to the utility's demand for yet another
"registration" of your desire to not have radiating utility meters and to keep
your Analog meters (if you currently have one/them).

It is important to point out that Kathy Matara, Intervenor, is the authority to
speak with on this matter, but I do not want to ignore the many direct
communications that I have received, hence this short note.

Throughout history, organizations such as governments, those in commerce, and
others, who seek to control and/or oppress humanity, chant the same "mantra".

"Do what we tell you and don't complain."

Quite the contrary, you are encouraged to complain via the IUB web link that
was provided to you in the recent email broadcast from Safe Technologies
Fairfield on Thursday evening of last week.

On two occasions that I am aware of, and at one of those occasions I was
present, Marc Shuling, Consumer Advocate for Iowa, not only encouraged the
community to complain to the IUB (Iowa Utilities Board), but he insisted that
it was the only way to succeed. He told us to "beat the bushes" and get
everyone to tell the IUB that we are unhappy with the situation. He said that
otherwise, the IUB will assume that you are happy with the situation.

There is a long list of concerns that have been sent to me from many of you..

Just a few of them are:
-- We thought we had settled this with the utility already. We jumped through
all of their hoops already. What is this all about?
-- The 30 day time frame is unreasonably short for any process such as this..
It creates fear and puts the consumers into a panic.
-- Further, the imposition of a short time frame in the light of the global
disruption from a virus, when some people may be away from home and forcibly
sequestered in states or countries and cannot respond, is much more than,
unreasonable.

About the so-called "low pulsing" options:

1. Intervenor Kathy Matara presented in the IUB Hearing last year, the work of
Dr. Ronald Powell, Physicist, on the number of pulses of smart meters, where he
included the EMF/RF from neighbor's smart meters.

Rather than the advertised "once per month" or a "few pulses per month" from a
meter on the side of your house, Dr. Powell found that a home or business is
affected by smart meters within 100 yard distance from your location (100 yards
in all directions).

In application of Dr. Powell's study to the downtown Fairfield area, it was
found that many locations in the downtown area, could be experiencing 10,000's
of pulses per week, when using these so-called "low pulsing" approaches.

You can read the report that is part of the Hearing testimony:
http://rfreduce.com/robertsblog/dl/Smart-meter-Pulses-In-Dense-MIXED-Neighborhoods-,OptOut_OnDemand_Rev-1.pdf

2. Remember that a so-called low pulsing smart utility meter has other
characteristics that many people find objectionable. Just a few of them are:

-- the meter may emit microwave radiation with the Bluetooth or other protocol,
to attempt to connect with similarly equipped "smart appliances". The amount of
this radiation could be considerable.
-- the meter is collecting usage information from you and in-effect profiling
your daily habits. Many people consider this an invasion of privacy.
-- the meter has a power switch inside of it, to completely shut down your
power, and there is the concern that this switch has been the cause of many
smart meter fires in the past.
-- the switch mode power supply in the smart meter creates Dirty Electricity
that circulates on the wiring in your home/office and thereby radiates Dirty
Electricity Electric and Magnetic fields, into your dwelling, that put voltages
and currents into your body
-- the utility has not in any way promised/guaranteed that whatever the
"low pulsing weekly count" is, that is being proposed now, will not be changed,
including, increased, in the future.

A final note.

I am not aware of any way, that filing complaints now, would bring a
disadvantage to you, in the future. Again, the Iowa Consumer Advocate has
advised, to make your voice heard.

Again, Kathy Matara, Intervenor, is the authority to speak with on this matter,
and will provide you complete information.

This note is just a courtesy in response to many incoming emails and phone
calls.

Just a reminder that all of these k

Dear Friends,

Below is a letter with advice on how to proceed from our local attorney Jay
Marcus.

Here are steps to submit your Opt Out:
Following the instructions on Alliant’s flyer, enter:
alliantenergy..com/nonstandardmeter
.
Select Iowa.
Click on the fifth question, “How do I select a nonstandard meter?”
Click on the hotlink at the bottom for the Residential Nonstandard Meter Sign
Up form.
Click on Allow to download the form.
Fill out the form and click on “Submit by email.”

My “Submit by email" didn’t submit my form. So I called Alliant's phone number
for the Nonstandard Meter Hotline listed on the flyer for those with questions:
1-877-725-6611. After around 20 minutes on hold a customer service
representative politely took my information and submitted it for me.

Warm best wishes,

Regarding recent opt out notices from Alliant

The following is in regards to the notice you recently received from Alliant
Energy and some advice from others in the community telling you not to take any
action on Alliant’s notice until further word is received from the Iowa
Utilities Board. I don't agree with this advice.

You should follow the instructions on the Alliant notice and act within 30
days. Alliant sent a notice telling you that it needs to hear from you in 30
days or it will install a smart meter. In my view it is not prudent to hope
the Iowa Utilities Board will make Alliant clarify its notices or require that
you be given more time. Why take a chance on that and be stuck with a smart
meter for a time?

If you have any questions you can call Alliant’s Nonstandard Meter Hotline at
1-877-725-6611. I understand that you may have received multiple notices, or
the notice you received may not have given you an analog opt out choice. There
are different notices that Alliant sent, depending on whether you already have
an analog meter, or digital, or solar, are a landlord, etc. You may have
received some that do not apply to the meter you have, but there should be one
that is applicable. Maybe this or some other aspect confused you. But all the
notices state that if you have questions about what to do to opt out, you
should call Alliant at the number above. You will get accurate information from
them as they are very focused on this with all your calls.

I also believe strongly that you should not complain to the Utilities Board as
you may have been advised. In my view it paints us in a bad light as
complainers (or worse) where no complaint to the Board is necessary (if you are
confused, call Alliant as instructed on the notices), and it wastes the Board’s
time. If we need to go to the Board for something in the future, this will not
help! Alliant doesn’t want the difficulty of having to deal with analog meters,
and your complaints about how you found the analog instructions to be confusing
may convince the Board that we have too many options as one source of the
confusion.

The meters that are available as opt out options are: 1. Analog meter which is
available only if you currently have one, 2. Non-transmitting Digital meter,
(which isn’t a smart meter and doesn’t emit RF radiation), 3. Smart meter in
the opt out mode (this is a reduced transmission smart meter). For gas
customers you have the option to keep your existing meter without a smart
module being put in it that will emit RF radiation.

You may want to forward this to others since our mailing list is not complete
and others may have been confused by contrary advice circulating in the
community.

[FairfieldLife] Wait to respond to the recent Alliant mailing until we hear from the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB)

For updates, email Kathy Matara at the following address to join her list.

Dear Fairfield and Vedic City Alliant customers,

You have probably have received a mailing from Alliant in the past few days..
There is some information in the mailing that is confusing and can possibly
mislead you. We have contacted the IUB to protest the mailing rhetoric and are
waiting for a response which we expect in the next few days.

We suggest that you delay any response directly to Alliant until we have
further clarification from the IUB.

However, we do suggest that you immediately file a complaint to the IUB at the
following link. The case docket number to use is SPU-2018-0007
https://iub.iowa.gov/online-services/open-docket-comment-form
.

Please let them know any of the ways in which you have found the Alliant
mailing to be confusing, inaccurate or misleading

A few quick notes:
1. You have the right to keep your Analog (if you already have one on your
house)
2. If you already have a non-radiating digital, you may keep it
3. The low radiating smart meters, still radiate multiple times per month as
reported by Alliant,, they still can be hacked, they still present a fire
hazard, they still profile you and invade privacy, and during cross-examination
in the August 2019 Hearing, Alliant refused to agree that they will keep the
number of radiation pulses low in the years to come (ie. they can increase the
number of RF signals at any time).
4 In addition to the radiation that smart meters emit as referenced above,
they also communicate to smart appliances and can likely be upgraded to
communicate with 5G.

Thank you and we will connect with you again soon,

[FairfieldLife] President Hagelin: No MIU residents have tested positive for COVID-19 to date

2020-06-11 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
More encouraging! Stay careful!

June 11, 2020

Dear Members of the MIU Community:

We will continue to keep you updated on the latest situation regarding COVID-19
on our campus.

As we previously advised on June 1, widespread testing has identified several
workers who work on campus, but who reside off-campus, who tested positive for
COVID-19 over the last month.

While the total number of cases has increased a bit, all those who have tested
positive are either without symptoms, are recovering, or have recovered.. They
have all been in isolation in their off-campus residences, and will not be
permitted to return to campus until they are without symptoms for 14 days, and
have had a subsequent negative COVID test.

No campus residents have tested positive for COVID-19 to date.

All those in the affected worker units, whether or not having symptoms, have
been tested, and regular retests are being administered. Any testing positive
are placed in isolation.

The State of Iowa, while holding steady, is still hovering near its assumed
peak — so this is not the time to let our guard down.

We therefore encourage everyone on the MIU Campus to remain vigilant, to
practice social distancing, and to wear face coverings while in public. Since
June 1, masks have been required in the Argiro Student Center and in all major
administrative and academic buildings.

We continue to urge campus residents to stay on campus and avoid going into
town as much as possible.

We are closely monitoring the situation in Fairfield and across Iowa, and will
continue to make adjustments to our policies in order to ensure the safety of
our MIU community.

With best wishes,

President Hagelin

[FairfieldLife] June 2 Primary Election Info

Dear Friends,

Here’s a link to Jefferson County’s June 2 Primary information:
http://www.jeffersoncountyiowa.com/elections.htm

An engaged progressive friend sent me this analysis of the Democratic
candidates.

Here is what I put together for the Democratic Primary Election, which ends
June 2nd:

Dear Jefferson County Voter:

Only two seats are contested in the Democratic primary election — nominations
for the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate and for the Jefferson County
Sheriff. This email contains information on those races.

NOTE: We will be voting my mail, which means that you must submit an absentee
ballot to the County Auditor by June 2nd. If you want to mail it in, do that
today. Otherwise, deliver it yourself to the Auditor at the County Courthouse.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Rob Nelson (Facebook
)
A 49 year old former union ironworker who currently operates Nelson Rebar
Inc., Rob says he’s running for Sheriff because “I was told that if I “didn’t
like the way the Sheriffs’ Department is being run, vote them out”. This is why
I will be on the June 2nd Primary Ballot.” Rob’s roots here go back to the
1850s. Rob has no experience working in law enforcement but expresses a
willingness to get the training if he’s elected. On his Facebook page, he
describes himself: “Being a loyal employee and of recent, a successful and
loyal business owner has adjusted my listening ability. I am approachable,
trustworthy and honest and will be available to listen to your concerns.” His
comment on the Sheriff’s Office makes clear his motivation for seeking the job
of Sheriff: “The Sheriff's department has let the people down for too long by
failing to properly investigate crimes, allowing the drug traffic to rise,
letting criminals off easy, and favoring those close to them.” He wants to
bring “new eyes” to the Sheriff’s Office.

Tracy Vance (no online presence as yet) In his 35 years of public service,
Tracy has served as a firefighter, a school board member, a county supervisor
and executive director of the Fort Madison and, subsequently, the Fairfield
Chambers of Commerce. He also served as the Executive Director of the Fairfield
Economic Development Association. He has been a Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff
for the past 6-½ years. Building on the Sheriff’s Office motto “Protect and
Serve,” Tracy says: “I believe law enforcement should interact with the
community. The JCSO should and can be a partner in the economic and social
wellbeing of our county by assuring our citizens’ safety and fair treatment.”

My Recommendation: I have to favor Tracy Vance for his experience in the
Sheriff’s Office and an impressive background in the economic and educational
life of Iowa communities. He knows how to take responsibility, to lead, to
listen and to act fairly and sensibly.

[FairfieldLife] Coronavirus: No more deadly than the flu? Anti-lockdown protests?

2020-04-22 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Dear Friends,

Several of you have expressed support for the belief that COVID-19 is no more
deadly than the flu, and/or expressed support for anti-lockdown protests.. To
these among you I ask a simple question, and then present some stats.

The question: How many times in the last 100 years have you heard of New York
City’s hospitals being completely overwhelmed by a flu? Detroit’s? Milan’s?
Once—only this year. In other words, it’s an extremely rare occurrence.
If so, the probability that Covid-19 is just like any other flu would be close
to 1%.

The stats:

1. How lethal is Covid-19 compared to flu? Here are CNN's stats on the annual
flu burden in the U.S. since 2010 from a cogent 3-minute interview of Dr.
Sanjay Gupta:*
Range of the number of illnesses in a year: 9,000,000-45,000,000
Range of the number of hospitalizations in a year: 140,000-810,000
Range of the number of deaths in a year: 12,000-61,000

Conclusion: The lethality of the flu in the U.S. during this period has been
0.13%.

2. The Lancet estimated Covid-19’s lethality is 5.7%, and could be as high as
20%.** This is 48-154 times as deadly as flu.

3. How easily does Covid-19 spread compared to flu? Here are CNN's stats from
a cogent 2-minute report*** on R0 ("R-naught”, the reproduction number), a
measure of how many people each patient will infect:
For Measles at the upper end, R0 = 12-18, so each person with measles will
infect 12-18 others.
For Ebola at the lower end, R0 = 1.5-2.5.
Flu varies year to year, but one study reports its R0 averages 1.2.
For Covid-19 the CDC reports the R0 = 2.2-2.7.

Conclusion: Covid-19 is twice as contagious as the flu.

4. Combining the fact that Covid-19 is 48-158 times as lethal as the flu with
the fact that Covid-19 is twice as contagious as the flu, Covid-19 is 96-316
times as deadly. That’s not "just like the flu!"

5. These facts justify a response to Covid-19 that has correspondingly greater
urgency than the flu. That response is especially urgent in the U.S. because:
The world’s population is 7,800,000,000 and the U.S. population is 327,000,000.
According to Johns Hopkins,* the world has 2,561,044 confirmed cases, or
328 cases per million.
According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has 823,786 confirmed cases, or 2,519
cases per million. That is 8 times worse than average for the world.
According to Johns Hopkins, the world has 176,921 deaths, or 23 deaths per
million.
According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has 44,845 deaths, or 137 deaths per
million. That is 6 times worse than average for the world.

6. I’m not a doctor or epidemiologist, and the following statement is less
rigorous and more simplistic than the above sets of facts, and I could be
wrong: I’d say the primary ways of dealing with a new virus—until vaccinations
are available—are Containment, Tests, Contract Tracing, and Social Distancing.
In the U.S., the opportunity for Containment lapsed in February.
In the U.S., the Tests are way behind the nation's need.
Harvard researchers estimate “We need to deliver 5 million tests per day by
early June to deliver a safe social reopening."**
Harvard researchers estimate the U.S. needs "20 million tests a day (ideally by
late July) to fully remobilize the economy."
According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has tested a total of only 4,155,178 since
testing began.
According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. tested only 151,627 in the past 24 hours.
Contact Tracing can’t begin to be effective until the tests are sufficient.
Until the U.S. ramps up its Tests and Contract Tracing, Social Distancing is
all that’s left.

These are reasons for my reluctance to watch videos that encourage Americans to
dismiss social distancing and protest anti-lockdown measures. Until Covid-19 is
contained by much more tests and contract tracing—especially as set forth by
Harvard below—such advice will not only multiply our death count, but prolong
and deepen our economic contraction.

Sincere best wishes,
Dick

[FairfieldLife] Harvard's Roadmap to Pandemic Resilience

2020-04-21 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
This is the best, most comprehensive assessment I’ve seen for how the U.S.
should respond to the Covid-19 pandemic!

https://ethics.harvard.edu/files/center-for-ethics/files/roadmaptopandemicresilience_updated_4.20.20.pdf
Conclusion:
We have no time to waste. We can save lives, save our health infrastructure,
mobilize our economy, protect our civil liberties, and secure the foundations
for a resilient constitutional democracy. We can be democracy’s bulwark against
this existential threat if we elevate our ambitions and determine to act
swiftly and with purpose.

OUR ANCHOR RECOMMENDATION IS THIS:

Between now and August, we should phase in economic mobilization in sync with
growth in our capacity to provide speedy, sustainable testing, tracing and
warning, and supported isolation and quarantine programs for mobilized sectors
of the workforce. We do not propose a modest level of testing, tracing, and
supported isolation intended to supplement collective quarantine as a tool of
disease control. We recommend a level of TTSI ambitious enough to replace
collective quarantine as a tool of disease control.

We need to deliver 5 million tests per day by early June to deliver a safe
social reopening. This number will need to increase over time (ideally by late
July) to 20 million a day to fully remobilize the economy. Achieving these
numbers depends on testing innovation. We acknowledge that even this number may
not be high enough to protect public health. In that considerably less likely
eventuality, we will need to scale testing up much further. By the time we know
if we need to do that, we should be in a better position to know how to do it.

An effective strategy of pandemic resilience requires the following:

Innovation in testing methodologies.

A Pandemic Testing Board established by the federal government with strong but
narrow powers that has the job

of securing the testing supply and the infrastructure necessary for deployment.

Federal and/or state guidance for state testing programs that accord with due
process, civil liberties, equal

protection, non-discrimination, and privacy standards.

Readiness frameworks to support local health leaders, mayors, tribal leaders,
and other public o cials in

establishing test administration processes and isolation support resources.

Organizational innovation at the local level linking cities, counties, and
health districts, with speci cs varying from state to state.

Federal and state investment in contact tracing personnel, starting with an
investment in 100,000 personnel

(recommendation from JHU Center for Health Security).

Clear mechanisms and norms of governance and enforcement around the design and
use of peer-to-peer warning

apps, including maximal privacy protection, availability of open source code
for independent and regulatory audit, and prohibitions on the use of any data
from these apps for commercial purposes, ideally achieved through pre- emptive
legislation.

Support for quarantine and isolation in the form of jobs protections and
material support for time in quarantine and isolation as well as access to
health care.

An expanded U.S. Public Health Service Corps and Medical (or Health) Reserves
Corps (paid service roles), and addition of Health Reserves Corps to the
National Guard units of each state.

National Infectious Disease Forecasting Center to modernize disease tracking
(recommendation from Scott Gottlieb, AEI).

Consensus is emerging about what we need. How to do it is beginning to come
into view. The time for action has arrived.

[FairfieldLife] Antibody blood tests indicate 50X to 85X more coronavirus cases than confirmed

2020-04-18 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/17/health/santa-clara-coronavirus-infections-study/index.html
Far more people may have been infected by coronavirus in one California county,
Stanford study estimates
By Michael Nedelman, CNN
Updated 10:39 PM ET, Fri April 17, 2020

(CNN) Far more people may have been infected with Covid-19 than have been
confirmed by health officials in Santa Clara County, California, according to a
study released Friday in preprint.

The study used an antibody blood test to estimate how many people had been
infected with Covid-19 in the past. Other tests, like those performed with
nasal swabs or saliva, test for the virus' genetic material, which does not
persist long after recovery, as antibodies do.
"We found that there are many, many unidentified cases of people having Covid
infection that were never identified with it with a virus test," said Dr.. Jay
Bhattacharya, a professor of medicine at Stanford University and one of the
paper's authors
. "It's
consistent with findings from around the world that this disease, this epidemic
is further along than we thought."
The study estimated that 2.49% to 4.16% of people in Santa Clara Country had
been infected with Covid-19 by April 1. This represents between 48,000 and
81,000 people, which is 50 to 85 times what county officials recorded by that
date: 956 confirmed cases.
A preprint study is a draft version of a study released to the public that
hasn't been peer-reviewed for publication in a journal. CNN has reached out to
the Santa Clara County Public Health Department for comment.
Similar efforts to estimate local antibody prevalence have launched in places
like Miami-Dade County, Florida; San Miguel County, Colorado; and Los Angeles,
California. The National Institutes of Health has a similar effort underway as
well.
Bhattacharya said information from these studies will not only give researchers
a better idea on antibody prevalence, but they will also vastly improve
projections and disease modeling. Experts have said it's clear there have been
more people infected than we've tested for, but it's unclear how much higher
that number could be.
"All of the projection models have this as an input: how many people have been
infected today," Bhattacharya said.
"It just helps us plan better," he added. "Before, we were making policy in the
dark."

A Stanford University study used antibody tests to determine the prevalence of
coronavirus infections in Santa Clara County, California.
The research may also give a more realistic sense of how deadly the virus
really is.
"If I get the infection, how likely is it I'm going to die? That number depends
on knowing how many people have had the infection -- not just actively have it
now, but have had it and recovered from it," Bhattacharya said.
If 50 times more people have had the infection, the death rate could drop by
that same factor, putting it "somewhere between 'little worse than the flu' to
'twice as bad as the flu' in terms of case fatality rate," Bhattacharya said.
But he cautioned that the flu and coronavirus are still quite different. For
one, we don't yet have a vaccine for Covid-19.
Doctors suspect, though, and are still trying to prove beyond a doubt, that
antibodies to Covid-19 mean one is immune down the line.
The study in Santa Clara County recruited participants largely using Facebook
ads targeted by zip code to sample various parts of the community. The study
tested 3,330 adults and children.
"They had about five different tents set up and you just kind of drove through
and they pricked your finger, took a blood sample and took down your
information," one of those participants, Tony Huston, told CNN Chief Medical
Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on his podcast, "Coronavirus: Fact vs. Fiction."
"I think it's human nature to want to know if you've had it or if you have the
antibodies," Huston said.

Forwarded from another friend:

"Not sure who this Russian devotee is, but the simple method is to chew a piece
of fresh ginger three times a day, as apparently the virus can’t survive in the
presence of ginger. He explains below. I tried it tonight, and thought it would
make me super pitta, but is simply helped my digestion, and it certainly felt
like it would burn up any visitors. “

Russian devotee, Dr. Oleg Torsunov from Russia has many times so far proving
his credibility. In this recent transcription, he speaks about the remedy
against the virus:

Before I start the lesson, I want to tell you something. The virus that is now
scaring the world is indeed there, and it can indeed be dangerous. Its danger
lies in denying the human organism the chance to defend itself against
bacterial pneumonia. The virus itself doesn't kill people. It is the bacteria
that can affect the lungs after the virus stays in the body.

This increase in bacteria can indeed go very quickly. Bacterial pneumonia can
occur 7 days after coming into contact with the virus. For example, after a few
hours of flight by plane, the infected can get edema in their lungs because of
the heavy load.

But there is also good news. I have been studying how to fight a number of
viral infections for 15 years now. I can tell you for sure that this
coronavirus is very easy to fight. With the help of the ginger. If you chew a
small piece of ginger 3 times a day and drink a warm turmeric drink with a
little honey at the same time, you will in principle not be able to get any
viruses. It just won't be possible.

Now here in the room, as I see it (subtle), there are no infected people.
Today's hygiene means "chewing ginger every day". You have to learn it. Because
sooner or later there will also be many infected people in Russia. Anyone who
will not be serious about this problem will be at risk of dying. The chances of
dying from the effects of this virus are 5%. That means that 5 out of 100
infected people die. 10 more are in critical condition.

If you suck and chew ginger, the virus has no chance. The strength of the
ginger should not be underestimated. I have been curing people of a number of
viral infections for many years. The range of foods that I use for healing is
very small: Ginger, turmeric, sprigs of pine, sprigs of fir, yellow mustard and
white pepper. All of these foods are capable of killing various viruses.

When we have the Vedic “virtue” festival in Russia in May (around 1,500
participants), I will make sure that all of these components are made available
so that people do not become infected. At this festival, which takes place
twice a year, there are never any cases of illness, even though people sit side
by side in large rooms for hours and listen to the lecturers.

So again: the virus itself is not that strong. If you chew ginger every day,
the virus has no chance at all. I fly from city to city by plane every week. I
don't think of a breathing mask because I know how strong the ginger works. I

MARCH 31, 2020

A Call with Dr. Tony Nader
for All Practitioners of the
Transcendental Meditation® Technique
Friday, April 3, 2:00 pm CDT

Dear Meditators and Sidhas,

In the last weeks, Dr. Tony Nader (Maharaja) has hosted a number of webinars,
bringing over 4,000 meditators together worldwide, from over 84

have a chance to ask questions to the leader of Maharishi’s worldwide
organizations.

After the webinars, it was expressed that it was now the time to invite the
entire family of Meditators—bringing all of us together, so that everyone has
the opportunity to ask Dr. Nader questions. Please join us in the next
teleconference, which will be extremely valuable and inspiring.

We are pleased to announce that the first of these all-TM®-Meditator meetings
will be questions and answers, and will take place on Friday, April 3, at 9:00

[FairfieldLife] Jefferson County's first coronavirus case is between 18-40 and is self-isolating at home

Jefferson County has first COVID-19 case; officials ask residents to take virus
seriously
by KTVO News DeskThursday, April 2nd 2020
FAIRFIELD, Iowa — Jefferson County has its first confirmed case of coronavirus.

Jefferson County Public Health Administrator Chris Estle made the announcement
at press conference this morning.

Estle said the individual was between the ages of 18-40 and is self-isolating
at home.

Estle said that the county has been monitoring several individuals who have
been presenting symptoms over the past few weeks.

For the Jefferson County officials, the number of confirmed cases in Jefferson
County misses the point.

The virus is present, will likely spread, and the community needs to take the
mitigation measures seriously.

But the Jefferson County Hospital CEO said panic isn't necessary, but that it's
inappropriate to say that the virus is nothing to be concerned about.

Estle asked the community to stop trying to guess the identity of infected
individuals.

She said that any guess is likely wrong and that misinformation only hurts the
effort to fight the virus.

Fairfield Mayor Connie Boyer says if you want to help, treat your daily life
like there is already a shelter-in-place order for the state.

[FairfieldLife] Experts tell White House coronavirus can spread through talking or even just breathing

Experts tell White House coronavirus can spread through talking or even just
breathing

By Elizabeth Cohen , Senior
Medical Correspondent
Updated 11:16 AM ET, Thu April 2, 2020

(CNN) A prestigious scientific panel told the White House Wednesday night that
research shows coronavirus can be spread not just by sneezes or coughs, but
also just by talking, or possibly even just breathing.

"While the current [coronavirus] specific research is limited, the results of
available studies are consistent with aerosolization of virus from normal
breathing," according to the letter, written by Dr. Harvey Fineberg, chairman
of a committee with the National Academy of Sciences.
Fineberg told CNN that he will wear start wearing a mask when he goes to the
grocery store.
"I'm not going to wear a surgical mask, because clinicians need those," said
Fineberg, former dean of the Harvard School of Public Health. "But I have a
nice western-style bandana I might wear. Or I have a balaclava. I have some
pretty nice options."
Dr. Anthony Fauci
,
a key member of the White House's coronavirus task force, told CNN Tuesday
that the idea of recommending broad use of masks in the US to prevent the
spread of coronavirus is under "very active discussion" by the group.
Fineberg, chair of the NAS' Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases
and 21st Century Health Threats
,
said his letter was sent Wednesday evening in response to a query from Kelvin
Droegemeier with the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White
House.
"This letter responds to your question concerning the possibility that
[coronavirus] could be spread by conversation, in addition to
sneeze/cough-induced droplets," the letter states. "Currently available
research supports the possibility that [coronavirus] could be spread via
bioaerosols generated directly by patients' exhalation," it continues.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
,
the virus spreads from person to person when people are within about 6 feet of
each other "through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person
coughs or sneezes."
Fineberg told CNN this is true, but that research shows that aerosolized
droplets produced by talking or possibly even by just breathing can also spread
the virus.
His letter explains that research at a hospital in China shows the virus can be
suspended in the air when doctors and nurses remove protective gear, or when
floors are cleaned, or when staff move around.
Research by the University of Nebraska shows that genetic material from the
virus was found in patients' rooms more than 6 feet away from the patients,
according to the letter.
Fineberg said it's possible that aerosolized coronavirus droplets can hang in
the air and potentially infect someone who walks by later.
He added, however, that coronavirus is not as infectious as measles or
tuberculosis.
How long coronavirus lingers in the air depends on several factors, including
how much virus an infected individual puts out when breathing or talking, and
also on the amount of circulation in the air, he said.
"If you generate an aerosol of the virus with no circulation in a room, it's
conceivable that if you walk through later, you could inhale the virus,"
Fineberg said. "But if you're outside, the breeze will likely disperse it."

Jefferson County Public Health

March 28, 2020 13:45
From: Christine Estle, JCPH Administrator

Hi Jefferson County Iowa Residents,
I am responding to your comments and concerns related to COVID-19.
First, I want to say, thank you for all you are doing as individuals to keep
our community healthy!
By staying home, limiting trips and washing your hands, you make a difference.
At this time, there are no lab confirmed positive cases in Jefferson County..
However, community spread is in Iowa. People are in self-isolation in Jefferson
County.
Do not get focused on lab results!
I am sharing factual information as of this date and time. I am not spreading
fear, I am providing facts.
I want to remind everyone that the JCPH Facebook page is NOT the place to enter
into negative comments or finger pointing. I am asking everyone to be
respectful, if that does not happen, I will turn off the comment option. I want
to hear your questions, so we can best serve the residents of Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Public Health, Jefferson County Emergency Management,
Jefferson County Health Center, and many community partners have been working
daily to prepare for and respond to COVID-19.
When schools were closed, I made the decision to close the Community Child Care
Center. This was to decrease community spread of the virus. I wanted to keep
children safe, along with the childcare center staff.
I have personally met with our MIU partners. The Board of Health and MIU
officials had a special open meeting to discuss COVID-19 preparedness and
mitigation. Dr. John Hagelin, MIU president, addressed community concerns with
a written statement.
Emergency Preparedness
Community partners such as: fire, law enforcement, EMA, JCHC, JCPH and
facilities providing direct patient/resident care have been meeting on a
monthly basis for several years. This large scale pandemic response is new,
however, emergency preparedness planning/response is not new. Preparedness
response plans are in place by the respective organizations. For
patient/resident and staff safety, specific plan details are not public. Plans
are guidance, plans will change. Plans may change daily or several times a day,
depending on the needed response at a specific time.
Testing Information
A positive or negative test result does not change the course of treatment. 80%
of individuals that become infected with this virus, will not experience
significant symptoms.
Specimen Collection and Testing are 2 different things.
1.Specimen collections are performed at Jefferson County Health Center, then
sent to a lab for testing. Tests are not performed at Jefferson County Health
Center at this time. In the future, JCHC may offer on-site testing or drive
through testing.
2.Testing guidelines must be followed. Guidelines are provided by the Iowa
Department of Public Health and CDC. The state hygienic lab (SHL), is now
processing 24/7, results may be available within 24-72 hours.
3. Specimens may be sent to a reference lab. Reference lab results may be
available in 5-7 days.
4. While you are waiting on test results, home isolation is required.
The more individuals that are tested, the longer it will take to have results
and more resources will be used. In Iowa, we have hot-spots of illness.
Hot-spots are a priority for testing and resources.
Supplies
Jefferson County Emergency Manager has requested PPE from state partners.
Partial shipment was received on Friday and Jefferson County is due to receive
partial shipment today. (Saturday)
The Iowa National Guard has been activated and is working on supply delivery.
The Iowa State Patrol is also delivering PPE.
PPE distribution is a priority to front-line service individuals.

Nearly half of Diamond Princess cruise ship passengers and crew who had
coronavirus were asymptomatic when tested, CDC report says
By Amir Vera and Shelby Lin Erdman, CNN
Updated 12:50 AM ET, Tue March 24, 2020

(CNN) Nearly half of the Diamond Princess cruise ship
passengers
and crew who tested positive for the novel coronavirus
 were
asymptomatic at the time they were tested, according to a new report from the
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Of the 712 passengers and crew members of the ship who tested positive for
coronavirus, 331 -- or 46.5% -- were asymptomatic at the time of testing, the
CDC said.
The agency said that the high rate of asymptomatic infections could partly
explain the high rate of infection among cruise ship passengers and crew.
Traces of the virus were found "on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both
symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins
were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had
been conducted," the CDC said.
However, the surface contamination on the ship can't be used to determine
whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces without further study,
the CDC cautioned.
As of March 13, 107, or 25%, of the 428 Americans on the Diamond Princess
tested positive for coronavirus, the agency said.
The CDC's report also detailed the other cruise ship, the Grand Princess
,
which was in limbo for days off the coast of California. Of the 469 people
with available test results on that ship, 78 -- or 17% -- of them tested
positive for coronavirus.
"The Diamond Princess and Grand Princess had more than 800 total Covid-19
cases, including 10 deaths," the CDC's report said.
Between February 3 and March 13, about 200 coronavirus cases in the US were
confirmed to be from cruise travelers of multiple voyages, including the
Diamond Princess and Grand Princess, the CDC's report said. This accounted for
about 17% of the total reported US cases at the time, according to the report.
"Cases linked with cruise travel have been reported to CDC in at least 15
states," the report said.

[FairfieldLife] Goswigs' Coronavirus Tests are Negative!

2020-03-16 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Great News!

“Covid-19 Tests Negative: We just received a call from Kris at the Jefferson
County Dept. of Health, and our test swabs were confirmed negative for
Covid-19, Coronavirus.

Kris said that we likely have a variant strain of influenza, which didn't show
on standard influenza tests. The virulent nature of this strain accounts for
the heavy respiratory component - similar to Covid-19.

It's apparently good that we self-quarantined. Although not nearly as dangerous
as Covid-19, such strains also can be dangerous and often account for
fatalities.

We regret any undue alarm that our initial notice created. Over the first 3
days, we had no access to testing (didn't qualify), and had no idea what were
carrying.

Given that our symptoms arose 5 days after receiving our well-traveled
Norwegian visitor, with simultaneous symptoms for both Eileen and me, 3 weeks
after my previous bout of flu (I should have been immune), we felt a moral
obligation to appraise the community.

We're relieved that Fairfield can rest easier now, knowing that no confirmed
Covid-19 has been uncovered in the community.

Eileen and I will now again revert to our dull, obscure lives, yet remain
house-bound for another week at least until this strain of influenza is
completely extinguished.

We are humbled and grateful for the boundless kindness, positive thoughts and
words people have conveyed. Some left remedies and food on our porch, as gifts.

This community is special in the world, and precious.

Thanks again,
Ben & Eileen

[FairfieldLife] Newsweek Opinion: Young and unafraid of the coronavirus pandemic?

OPINION
YOUNG AND UNAFRAID OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC? GOOD FOR YOU. NOW STOP KILLING
PEOPLE | OPINION
By A Doctor in Western Europe On 3/11/20 at 2:29 PM EDT
I'm a doctor in a major hospital in Western Europe. Watching you Americans

(and you, Brits) in these still-early days of the coronavirus pandemic is like
watching a familiar horror movie, where the protagonists, yet again, split into
pairs or decide to take a tour of a dark basement.

The real-life versions of this behavior are pretending this is just a flu;
keeping schools open; following through with your holiday travel plans, and
going into the office daily. This is what we did in Italy. We were so
complacent that even when people with coronavirus symptoms started turning up,
we wrote each off as a nasty case of the flu. We kept the economy going,
pointed fingers at China and urged tourists to keep traveling. And the majority
of us told ourselves and each other: this isn't so bad. We're young, we're fit,
we'll be fine even if we catch it.

Fast-forward two months, and we are drowning. Statistically speaking—judging by
the curve in China—we are not even at the peak yet, but our fatality rate is at
over 6 percent, double the known global average.

Put aside statistics. Here is how it looks in practice. Most of my childhood
friends are now doctors working in north Italy. In Milan, in Bergamo, in Padua,
they are having to choose between intubating a 40-year-old with two kids, a
40-year old who is fit and healthy with no co-morbidities, and a 60-year-old
with high blood pressure, because they don't have enough beds. In the hallway,
meanwhile, there are another 15 people waiting who are already hardly breathing
and need oxygen.

The army is trying to bring some of them to other regions with helicopters but
it's not enough: the flow is just too much, too many people are getting sick at
the same time.

We are still awaiting the peak of the epidemic in Europe: probably early April
for Italy, mid-April for Germany and Switzerland, somewhere around that time
for the UK. In the U.S., the infection has only just begun.

But until we're past the peak, the only solution is to impose social
restrictions.

And if your government is hesitating, these restrictions are up to you. Stay
put. Do not travel. Cancel that family reunion, the promotion party and the big
night out. This really sucks, but these are special times. Don't take risks. Do
not go to places where you are more than 20 people in the same room. It's not
safe and it's not worth it.

But why the urgency, if most people survive?

Here's why: Fatality is the wrong yardstick. Catching the virus can mess up
your life in many, many more ways than just straight-up killing you. "We are
all young"—okay. "Even if we get the bug, we will survive"—fantastic. How about
needing four months of physical therapy before you even feel human again. Or
getting scar tissue in your lungs and having your activity level restricted for
the rest of your life. Not to mention having every chance of catching another
bug in hospital, while you're being treated or waiting to get checked with an
immune system distracted even by the false alarm of an ordinary flu. No travel
for leisure or business is worth this risk.

Now, odds are, you might catch coronavirus and might not even get symptoms.
Great. Good for you. Very bad for everyone else, from your own grandparents to
the random older person who got on the subway train a stop or two after you got
off. You're fine, you're barely even sneezing or coughing, but you're walking
around and you kill a couple of old ladies without even knowing it. Is that
fair? You tell me.

My personal as well as professional view: we all have a duty to stay put,
except for very special reasons, like, you go to work because you work in
healthcare, or you have to save a life and bring someone to hospital, or go out
to shop for food so you can survive. But when we get to this stage of a
pandemic, it's really important not to spread the bug. The only thing that
helps is social restriction. Ideally, the government should issue that
instruction and provide a financial fallback—compensate business owners, ease
the financial load on everyone as much as possible and reduce the incentive of
risking your life or the lives of others just to make ends meet. But if your
government or company is slow on the uptake, don't be that person. Take
responsibility. For all but essential movement, restrict yourself..

This is epidemiology 101. It really sucks. It is extreme—but luckily, we don't
have pandemics of this violence every year. So sit it out. Stay put. Don't

[FairfieldLife] COVID-19: In Fairfield: Possibly infected neighbor:

2020-03-14 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]
Note: Due to the COVID-19 threat, both Domes and the Flying Halls at the
IdealLife Campus will be closing until further notice after Sunday evening’s
program. To maintain coherence, Maharishi Foundation ask us to lift off at our
usual times, 8:15am and 5:45 pm.

Forwarded from Ben Gosvig, who lives in North Campus Village:

Dear Neighbors:

My wife, Eileen, and I, Ben, are likely infected with Coronavirus. We cannot
confirm this, because our physician, JCHC, and Iowa CDC cannot provide a test.
I spent hours on the phone the yesterday trying to acquire a test with no
success.

Why do we think we have it? Last Saturday, March 7, we hosted my wife's boss
from Norway for a day here in Fairfield. Prior to arriving, he had traveled
throughout Europe and Mexico. Also, his home town of Oslo Norway is one of the
hardest hit by Coronavirus, with nearly 600 confirmed cases. My wife's boss
exhibited no symptoms and hasn’t been tested (which is why we cannot be tested).

However, according to the WHO, 80% of Covid-19 carriers have mild or no
symptoms. They are, essentially, ticking time bombs.

The average incubation period for Covid-19 is 5.2 days, with some infections
occurring in as little as 1 or 2 days. 4.5 days after our meeting, on the
evening of March 11, both Eileen and I began exhibiting symptoms of fever,
chills, body aches and respiratory congestion with coughing.

Here's the kicker: I just had the "normal" flu 3 weeks ago, and made a full
recovery. By the end of February, I
was 100% healthy. I have NEVER had the flu twice in 3 weeks.

At this point, my symptoms are pronounced, while Eileen's are less so. I'm 66
years of age, while she's a youngster at age 55. I also have no spleen
(compromised immune system). We are, of course, in self-quarantine, and will
remain so for 14 days. My wife’s boss is also now in quarantine in Norway.

My message to my neighbors is twofold:

1) America's testing capacity for Covid-19 is woeful. Nationally, the CDC, can
only test 350 people per day, in a population of 331 million. South Korea, with
1/6 our population can test up to 20,000 people per day. Nearly every country
affected by Covid-19 has better testing capacity than the US.

As a result, our measure of "confirmed cases" is wildly inaccurate. Thousands
of infected people, like us, are walking around, some with mild or no symptoms,
infecting others. This virus is highly contagious. Without adequate testing,
infected people cannot confirm their status, and therefore have little
motivation to self-quarantine.

CDC's reporting vastly understates the severity of this crisis. Iowa currently
reports only 16 cases, most from a cruise ship that visited Egypt. You can be
sure this number is far from reality.

2) Even if you're not infected, stay home as much as possible, and avoid
gatherings. In countries hardest hit (China, Italy, Korea) they've adopted near
lock-downs, which has dramatically slowed the spread of the virus. Here's an
important link that discusses how essential it is to avoid gatherings, even if
you're 100 healthy and uninfected...
https://www.newsweek.com/young-unafraid-coronavirus-pandemic-good-you-now-stop-killing-people-opinion-1491797?amp=1

Eileen and I will likely be fine. We've arranged for food delivery, and are
extremely careful to not contact anyone. Several times per day we (mostly my
wife - I'm too sick) must make a short walk down north Ruby Lane to bring our
large dog, Bailey, to the field north of NCV for his walks. He's a big,
boisterous boy and must get out. If you see us headed toward the field, please
remain clear of us so you don't expose yourself.

This crisis is exploding quickly, and with greater severity than most realize.
The proliferation models I've seen by epidemiology experts are terrifying. We
can only stem this outbreak by being vigilant, and recognizing the gravity of
our situation.

I'm sorry if this message alarms anyone. As a probable carrier of this
infection, I can assure you this is a nasty disease - especially for people my
age, which includes most of NCV.

The greatest threat of this virus is difficulty in breathing due to congestion
in the lungs. Once fluid collects in the lungs, the danger is extreme.

My wish is that everyone in our community remains healthy, and nobody else
contracts this deadly disease.

Regards,
Ben & Eileen

[FairfieldLife] Fwd: Honey bees on the Isle of Wight; Slovenia postpones 5G; More satellites are launched

 THE HONEY BEE’S PLEA

The honey bee in the banner at the top of this newsletter has been speaking to
us for over one hundred and fourteen years. Its numbers ever diminishing, its
message ever more urgent, it waits for a sleeping world to finally listen.
“Now!” it says. “Wake up before it’s too late, there is no more time!”

On the Isle of Wight, off the southern coast of England, Giuglielmo Marconi
built the world’s first permanent radio station. And the bees’ first warning to
humanity was heard. “They are often to be seen crawling up grass stems, or up
the supports of the hive, where they remain until they fall back to the earth
from sheer weakness, and soon afterwards die,” wrote Augustus Imms of Christ’s
College, Cambridge in 1906. Ninety percent of the bees had already vanished
from the entire island. Unable to find a cause, he called it, simply, Isle of
Wight disease.. Swarms of healthy bees were imported from the mainland, but it
was of no use: within a week the fresh bees were dying off by the thousands.

The description, more than a century later, is exactly the same. On November
19, 2019, a 5G antenna was placed 250 meters from Angela’s house in Melbourne,
Australia. “I photographed the new mast going onto the cell tower,” she writes,
“and the next day, I was in the driveway talking to our carpenter, and we saw
bees dropping on the driveway then dying. I managed to film one trying to
collect pollen, but it was hanging upside down and could not seem to make it to
the centre of the flower, then it rolled off the petals to the ground.”

Today, two months later, their beautiful garden, full of old world trees and
plants, is silent and barren. “We have no insects -- none,” wrote Angela last
week. “Our cumquat once laden all year has no new fruit coming. No olives on
the way on our olive tree so laden last year. We dug soil yesterday -- no worms
either -- nothing -- all gone. I walked the dog late tonight, it was dark and a
poor magpie was down the street under a street lamp hoping for a cricket I
think. It was silent. I took birdseed back but the bird had gone -- it must be
hungry to be out at night.”

In the midst of plenty the bees are starving to death. In 2009, Neelima Kumar,
at Panjab University in India, placed cell phones in some bee hives and turned
them on for ten minutes. The concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, total
carbohydrates, total lipids and total proteins rose precipitously in the bees’
blood. After just ten minutes’ exposure to a cell phone, the bees were not able
to digest their food, or use the oxygen they were breathing. Their metabolism
had come to a standstill.

“Wake up!” say the bees.

“Wake up!” said parents with their children who assembled last Saturday at the
Church on the Roundabout in Newport on the Isle of Wight to protest plans to
turn their island into a Smart Island -- to bring Isle of Wight disease back to
the island of its birth.

Radio waves are poison to life. They penetrate skin and bones, cell walls and
mitochondria. They prevent electrons from our food from combining with the
oxygen we breathe. They give us diabetes, and heart disease, and cancer. They
disorient migratory birds, and they kill outright tiny forms of life that
pollinate flowers and have high rates of metabolism.

In the mid-1990s, the invisible fire that Marconi had lit became a
conflagration. For the first time in human history, radio waves began to be
broadcast not only from tall towers scattered widely across the landscape, but
from the hands of men, women and children everywhere. And in 2020 this has
brought us to the brink of extinction -- not just of bees, and not just of
humanity, but of all life on Earth.

I asked, in a previous newsletter, “which do we want more: our phones or our
planet?” There is only one sane answer. I ask all of you who are reading this
newsletter to join with me in putting this world back on a path to survival by
throwing away your cell phones, now, today. Not next year, and not tomorrow.
Today. There is no other option. Tomorrow we can deal, if we dare, with climate
change. But if we are to have time to answer that urgent call, we must first
deal with this emergency. We must extinguish this fire.

I vote for life. Do you?

SLOVENIA VOTES FOR LIFE, AT LEAST FOR NOW

Last Friday, while people in 250 cities were preparing for the first Global Day
of Protest against 5G, Slovenia became the first country in the world to refuse
5G, at least temporarily, because of objections from scientists and the public.
The Ministry of Public Administration had called a four-hour Public
Consultation on Radiation Aspects in Ensuring the Operation of 5G Technologies.

Doctors say “just do it.”

Go do a workout. Exercise regularly. Do it often.

But “just do it” doesn’t tell you what to do.

So, researchers have started to work toward “prescriptions for exercise.” The
goal? Give you a better idea of the exact type of exercise you should be doing
to achieve specific health benefits. They aren’t quite there yet, but…

Here’s just some of what they’ve found:

Middle-age people with high levels of cardio fitness appear to have an 8 times

with “moderate fitness”

11,000 scientists warn of 'untold suffering' caused by climate change

By Emma Tobin and Ivana Kottasová
, CNN
Updated 2:54 PM ET, Tue November 5, 2019

(CNN) How many scientists does it take to convince the world to take climate
change seriously
?

More than 11,000 researchers from around the world on Tuesday issued a grim
warning of the "untold suffering" that will be caused by climate change

if humanity doesn't change its ways.
The group said that as scientists, they have the "moral obligation to tell it
like it is."
Phoebe Barnard, one of the lead authors of the report and the chief science and
policy officer at the Conservation Biology Institute, a nonprofit science
group, told CNN the report makes it clear "there's no more wiggle room" for
policymakers.

US begins formal withdrawal from Paris climate accord

"Posterity will remember them badly for dismissing climate change as a serious
threat to our civilization," she said.
It's not the first time thousands of academics united to urge people to take
action on climate change. More than 16,000 scientists from 184 countries

published a letter in 2017, warning that "human beings and the natural world
are on a collision course."
The latest report was published in BioScience
,
a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The scientists, who come from over 150
countries, said the climate crisis is "closely linked to excessive consumption
of the wealthy lifestyle."
Echoing the words of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg
,
the scientists have criticized policymakers for failing to take an action.
"Despite 40 years of global climate negotiations, with few exceptions, we have
generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to address this
predicament," they said.

Greta Thunberg asks for help to get to COP25 climate summit in Spain, after
Chile pulls out

They listed six key issues that need to be addressed if humanity wants to
prevent the most catastrophic scenarios.
These include replacing fossil fuels, cutting the emissions of climate
pollutants such as methane and soot, eating less meat, restoring and protecting
ecosystems, building a carbon-free economy and stabilizing population growth by
investing into family-planning services and girls education.
Barnard said the changes shouldn't be seen as "sacrifices," but as a way of
"transforming things that we have found stressful."
"Everything from road rage and congestion and dirty air," she said.

[FairfieldLife] Drs. Harung and Travis – Transcendental Meditation technique and how it leads to greater brain integration

Summary Online
:
  Below
Drs. Harung and Travis
Theme: Transcendental Meditation technique
and how it leads to greater brain integration

Research on what’s special about the brains of world-class performers

Whether athletes, musicians, executives, or scholars, some people just stand
out. And research shows that their brains differ in specific ways from those
who are less accomplished.

Dr. Harald Harung from Oslo Metropolitan University talked about the amazing
complexity of the human brain and the discovery of Dr. Fred Travis at Maharishi
University of Management of a way to use EEG to measure how effectively one’s
brain functions. His “Brain Integration Scale” shows that high brain
integration is associated with high performance.

Dr. Harung then discussed the reasons one might think would lead to world-class
performance, such as education, incentives, experience, and practice. But
extensive research has found that these factors can only account for a small
fraction of the success of high performing individuals.

An integrated brain is the key, according to three studies by Drs. Harung and
Travis. They studied top Olympic athletes, professional orchestral musicians,
and highly successful executives. These top performers tended to have greater
brain integration than those with more ordinary levels of achievement.

The question, then, is how to develop brain integration. Research by Dr. Travis
has found that the Transcendental Meditation technique results in substantial
brain integration.

The diagram below shows the brain integration of world-class performers
compared to those who are average. And by way of comparison, individuals who
had been practicing Transcendental Meditation an average of 24 years had almost
the double brain integration of the world-class performers.

Dr. Harung explained how transcending affects the brain, and how this approach
to meditation has specific effects not seen in other meditations.

In their short book World-Class Brain, Drs. Harung and Travis offer a readable
introduction to the brain, and give an accessible overview of their three
studies. They show that brain integration is not only associated with high
performance, but also with greater moral behaviour and a higher frequency of
peak experiences.

The book explains in greater detail what brain integration is and discusses
ways to develop it, ultimately focusing on the special benefits of the
Transcendental Meditation technique and how it leads to greater brain
integration.

It includes a chapter on peak experiences and higher states of consciousness,
as outlined by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and describes Dr. Travis’s research on
long-term meditators experiencing these higher states. The book also makes the
point that groups of individuals with greater brain integration can improve the
function of organizations. And it explains how, based on scientific research,
an entire society can benefit from developing individual brains.

World-Class Brain is available on Amazon
(https://www.amazon.com/World-Class-Brain-Harald-Harung-PhD/dp/1796680109

and a more comprehensive book by Drs. Harung and Travis on world-class
performance, titled Excellence Through Mind-Brain Development, is available

Elections for Mayor of Fairfield, for the Board of the Fairfield Community
School District, and for the Board of Indian Hills Community College are next
Tuesday, November 5th. There’s still time to vote early at the Courthouse.
Please Vote!

You might print this first page and take it with you when you go to vote so
that you’ll have the name of the write-in candidates worthy of support.

For School Board, please vote for Christi Welsh and Timothy Bower, and please
write in John McKerley and Margo Von Strohuber.

For Indian Hills Community College Board of Trustees Director District #3,
please write in the name Susie Drish.

Mayoral Race: Replay of the mayoral candidate forum held Wednesday is available
to watch here
.
If you are unsure about whom to vote for mayor of Fairfield, I strongly urge
you to watch this forum as each candidate revealed themselves to a degree
rarely seen in a forum. Trying not to sound prejudicial, I’d say that Connie
Boyer came across with a business orientation, Michael Halley offered a
moderate perspective and Ed Noyes offered an individual-first perspective.

More on the Candidates:

Having strong public schools is essential to having a thriving community.
Therefore, having dedicated, competent people on the Board is essential. Please
be engaged. Your vote is very, very important, least some random person or
someone with an agenda get enough votes to get on the Board. A big turnout
assures that these good candidates win seats on the School Board.

Only one person currently serving on the Board running for reelection — Christi
Welsh. She’s been an effective participant on the Board since her election two
years ago, when she ran to complete a term. I’ve put information supplied by
Christi and the other candidates below..

A second person on the ballot, Timothy Bower, has served on the Board of
Education in Muscatine, IA.

The names of these two candidates are on the ballot. However, there are four
positions open. Fortunately, two additional candidates have come forward whom
I’m happy to support. Please write in for School Board the names of John
McKerley and Margo Von Strohuber.

Also, please write in the name Susie Drish for Indian Hills Community College
Board of Trustees Director District #3.

You can vote now until November 4th at the Jefferson County Courthouse. The
election is next Tuesday, Nov. 5th.

[FairfieldLife] New Study: Maharishi Vastu Architecture Increases Creativity

New Study: Maharishi Vastu Architecture Increases Creativity

A new study published in Creativity Research Journal found increased creativity
in employees who work in a building designed according to Maharishi Vastu®
architecture.

In the first study of its kind, 21 employees of an architectural consulting
firm who moved into a Maharishi Vastu office building scored more highly on the
standardized Torrance Test of Creative Thinking compared to their score four
months earlier in their previous location. The study found that there was less
than a 1% possibility that the result was due to chance.

“This research experimentally demonstrated that moving from a conventional
architecture building into a Vastu building led to large measurable
improvements in employee creativity, in particular in the originality of the
ideas generated and their detailed elaboration,” said Professor Anil
Maheshwari, first author on the study. “I think every organization, big and
small, could benefit.”

The study was based on the PhD dissertation research of management student
Margaret Rose Werd, who is a coauthor of the published version.

The researchers hypothesized that this traditional system of architecture that
originated in India would have a wide range of benefits because it’s said to be
more in harmony with nature.

Features of Maharishi Vastu include alignment with the cardinal directions; a
silent central area called a Brahmasthan; specific placement and proportions of
the rooms; appropriate slope and shape of the land; an unobstructed view of the
sun; a location that’s distant from sources of electromagnetic radiation; and
use of natural materials and energy.

“It may seem unfamiliar to a Western, scientific perspective, but the fact is
that our physiology is intimately tied to the material and rhythms and forces
of the earth and sun,” Dr. Maheshwari said.

Creativity Research Journal is one of the two leading journals in research on
creativity.
