As to animals becoming Enlightened, there's a precedent in Ramana Maharshi's tradition, since he helped Lakshmi the cow get Enlightened at the time of the cow's death. Ramana also helped a crow, numerous monkeys, peacocks, snakes, bees, etc...on the path; but it's uncertain how far these creatures got toward the goal of Self-Realization.
