Or perhaps, they have distorted it back towards the norm...

He hooked up with MMY in 1981. I saw and spoke with
him  in Washington, DC when Purusha just started. He
was just a regular joe back then. Very open and
friendly. I had no idea who he was. I just sat down
next to him for lunch and chatted. All these claims
about learning techniques from the Shankaracharya in
1980 are BS on his part.

I taught Deepak’s intro TM course with Ted Weisman (Ted initiated him) in the fall of, I think, 1980, just before we went off to the Vedic Science course in New Delhi. I lived in Deepak’s parents’ house over there for two months. We got Deepak and his parents into the hall to see MMY, but they didn’t get any face time with him. I think TM was Deepak’s first serious foray into Indian spirituality. I probably would have been aware of any interaction he had with the Shankaracharya around that time, as I also visited him at his house several times after we got back from India. I don’t recall any mention of the Shankaracharya.

One of the cute little things that Chopra did with his books was to rewrite
_Quantum Healing_
to delete mention of MMY and his involvement with the Primordial Sound
technque, and
make it sound as though Chopra's Primordial Sound meditation was the subject of
the book
from the start.

People may recall that Chopra explicitly claims that MMY told him to write the
book in the
first place in order to explain how the technique works in Western terms,
according to the
original introduction. That was the most glaring omission in the introduction
to the non-
identified revised edition of the book that Chopra published a year or so after
he left the
TMO.

My guess would be the primoridal sound technique. I
got that in Stoneham in May 88, right before another

When did he learn TM, according to your understanding? My recollection is that
it was
some months or years prior to meeting MMY.

Chopra was not involved in spiritual pursuits prior to
his involvement with the TMO which started in 1981.

He hooked up with MMY in 1981. I saw and spoke with
him in Washington, DC when Purusha just started. He
was just a regular joe back then. Very open and
friendly. I had no idea who he was. I just sat down
next to him for lunch and chatted. All these claims
about learning techniques from the Shankaracharya in
1980 are BS on his part.

Chopra NEVER spoke off-the-cuff. His skill is in making it sound like he does.

2006-10-30 Thread ffia1120
Curtis,
No, I did not get picked up in a limo at the airport. I was invited
(along with some other TMers) to his daughter's Indian dance recital -
- can't remember what it's called - kind of like a coming out dance
recital(?) - and I drove to his office the following day. It was '87.

Your description of the techniques I can no longer remember sounds
familiar, though.

Chopra's techniques were not meant to be consciousness-raising per se, but on
the
physical level of health, so a puja wasn't relevant, or such has always been my
take.

And way back when, Chopra would accept checks made out to the Maharishi
Foundation,
and only accept room, board and expense money for himself.

Ironically, when he did THAT, no-one respected him in the New Age movement, but
now
that he charges many times as much as he used to, he brags about donating 10
percent to
charity and everyone who denounced him back then oohs and ahs about his
generosity.

Check the timeline of his rewriting his books several times over the years
without
mentioning it in the copyright. Quite fascinating. MOST authors hope to get
people to buy
a newer version of their book, so they make it clear that there is a rewrite,
but Chopra
conceals this fact.

Return of the Rishis gives a timeline. However, there is a new edition, still
copyrighted with
the old copyright and who knows if he's changed anything in it. My autographed
first edition
is packed away in boxes so I can't check it.

Of course, how carefully did he edit his story to fit with the TMO's needs at
that time is a
question that one needs to keep in mind when you read Early Chopra.

S Shatananda II or S. Vishundevananda or even S Vasudevananda, BTW?) with MMY's
interpretation of ahimsa, which is rather interesting, in and of itself...

Return of the Rishi, his autobiography, is copyright 1987. He learned TM quite
a few years
before that. He met Triguna in 1981 after he started TM, IIRC, though a
skeptics website
claims it was before he learned TM.

Just as a reality check ( or, given the source,
an unreality check :-), I'm the same way about
time. I could no more tell you the exact year
that something important happened in my life
than I could tell you who Lakshmi was sleeping
with during a particular kalpa.

For me it's not an age thang. I've always been
like this. I have *never* been able to remember
a particular calendar year and associate it with
other memories. Being somewhat of a music freak,
I tell "subjective time" via music. What album
was current when such-and-such happened...that
sorta thang. For example, I could not tell you
on a bet what year I met my first really serious
girlfriend and lost it heavily over her, but I
can without a moment's hesitation tell you
which albums formed the "soundtrack" of that
period. ( The album was "Aftermath," which if
you know it should give you a clue as to how
well that particular affair turned out. :-)

Some people think in terms of calendar years,
and can relate those calendar years to the events
of their lives. But what if you were a student
for decades? Academic years don't follow calendar
years. So you'd have to remember, "Such and such
happened in academic year '66-67," and really,
who's got the fuckin' time? It happened when
"Aftermath" was hot on the radio and in all the
stores and in every living room I ever entered.
You'd walk into a party and Paint It Black would
be playing. You'd get bored with that party and
go to the next one and Stupid Girl would be play-
ing. Then, at the next party, Lady Jane, and at
the next one, Under My Thumb.

Calendar years? Where's the value in recollecting
your life that way? But when the recollection has
a soundtrack, and a cool one? Magic.

And if that doesn't make you feel better, remember
that age-related memory loss is just nature's way
of saying, "Be here now."

Thanks for your impressions. Really. Chopra is a
complete mystery to me. He arrived on the TM scene
long after I had beat feet, and I've never been
interested enough in him to read any of his books
or articles. So about the only things I've heard
about him are the badraps one tends to hear on
TM-oriented talk forums. As a result, other than
respecting him for his decision to beat feet and
find his own path, I know diddleysquat about the
man. It's good to hear some balancing opinions.

2006-10-30 Thread curtisdeltablues
ffia1120,

Did they pick you up in a limo at the airport when you went to to get
your Chopra technique? Nice touch. That was really a funny move on
MMY's part letting him teach techniques without a puja. He did a long
induction first with my eyes closed, I remember that. It was a mix of
techniques like a yardsale package. Some A of E technique, a nightime
technique and a magic word for health. After leaving the movement I
felt it was particularly sketchy selling a magic word for your health
cloaked in the respectability of a doctor's office. They say "don't
tempt an honest man". When Chopra saw us all lining up with our fists
full of dollars (I remember it had to be in cash) he must have thought
to himself, "Popa needs a new pair of shoes!"

I think Chopra's story was a way of distancing himself from his
association with MMY. Making it seem like he got techniques from the
Shankaracharya was like padding his resume. He blew his own cover by
being too specific about how he did the techniques.

I am wondering if he just got confused about the years? I am not making
excuses for him, but I know how I have to stop and think, "OK, in '84 I

Actually, can anyone tell me how long the tape is? I started to
listen but gave up after 5 minutes 'cause I was worried it was about
2 hours or something and just wanted to get to the juicy parts.

So he was practicing a technique like the sidhis before he met MMY?
See my timeline problem with his story? He was selling MMY's Chopra
technique by '87.

I believe Chopra hooked up with MMY in 1985 or '86. Certainly not
before that. He was working at a Mormon hospital in the Boston area
before he got invloved with the TMO.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Audio talk with Chopra... talks about peace, TM movement, etc

2006-10-30 Thread curtisdeltablues
There were some interesting claims by Chopra. He claimed to have
learned a program based on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras from the
Shankaracharya in 1980. His claim poses some interesting time line
issues. Is he describing his experience with MMY on a sidhi course?
He mixes up a few different techniques in his description, some
virtues sutras, some A of E technique, which he sold to me right in
his doctor's office in Stonham Mass for $700 in around '87, and some
other forgiveness techniques common in new age seminars. Could any of
this be true? Was he with MMY in 80?

His magic bird attraction story also has problems for me. Holding out
food to tame birds makes them come to you for the food. Without the
food he would have an unusual story. With the food you've got
nothing. He shifted the story to make it sound like magic at first.
He claims that after the three week course with the Shankaracharya ,
he would see a bird on a tree and have the intention for it to come to
him and it would. Later he mentions using grain or nuts to feed the
birds. I'm guessing he fed some parrots nuts, most birds can't eat
them, and some pigeons grain, most birds don't want grain but pigeons
love millet. Or just made the whole nonsense up start to finish.

Wanna know a surefire way to tell if Chopra is lying? Watch his lips,
if they are moving, bingo!

So...

In 1980, he took a special class from the Shankaracharya of the North and
learned how to
charm animals...

Ummm Anyone ever hear this one before? Was this something he left out of
Return of the
Rishi?
