So you're saying that MMY learned techniques in college in the 1930's from an organization that was founded in 1955? http://www.anandamarga.org/amhist.htm The beginnings of the Ananda Marga mission takes us back to the state of Bihar, India in 1955. In the town of Jamalpur, Prabhat Rainjan Sarkar organized the first chapter of Ananda Marga, (the Path of Bliss). His philosophy strongly rejected dogmas, superstitions, and conventions such as the caste system. Sarkar taught spiritual practices for self-development and urged the aspirants to take a strong stand against exploitation and corruption. The motto "Self- realization and service to humanity" became the guiding ideal for thousands of people who were attracted to the universal vision of Ananda Marga. Such techniques are quite relaxing and refreshing, but for spiritual elevation, concentration is essential - the intense effort to focus the mind on the mantra. Practice meditation using a general mantra. As has been explained in other articles, a personal mantra is used in the Ananda Marga meditation system. There is however a universal mantra which can be used by anyone. The mantra consists of three Sanskrit words: Baba Nam Kevalam. Baba means "beloved" and it refers to your deepest Supreme Self. Nam means "name", and Kevalam means, "only". The meaning of the mantra is "Only the name of the Beloved". It is important to keep the idea of the mantra in your mind while you do the repetition of the Sanskrit words. Or the basis for them. Look up Ananda Marga. In the 'Beacon light' lectures, on page fifty-nine, there are four Sanskrit verses forming a variant of a well known prayer in veneration of the guru or more particularly the guru's sandals, popularly known as the Guru Paduka-Panchakam and attributed to Adi Shankara, the founder of the Shankaracharya tradition of monks. Interestingly, one of these verses contains no fewer than three TM- style bij mantras. This is seemingly compelling evidence of a connection between an older tradition of bij mantra meditation and the 'Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation. Transliteration of the particular Sanskrit verse is as follows:- aim-kaara hriim-kaara rahasyayukta shriim-kaara guudaartha mahaavibhuutyaa, om-kaara marma pratipaadiniibhyaam namo namah shrii gurupaadukaabhyaam. In the context of the other verses, the four seed syllables mentioned echo the four stages (ashramas) of life. This may represent an Opus Dei piece by a Hindu-turned-Catholic and is designed to steer Christians away from Hindu meditative movements. That's the feeling I got from the article. Interesting, never thought of that. All in all a pretty crappy piece of journalism. Missed this claim. What is a "third technique Ananda margi?" It's where he got his TM techniques from. Or the basis for them. Look up Ananda Marga. Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: The Desacralization of Hinduism for Western Consumption
So you're saying that MMY learned techniques in college in the 1930's from an organization that was founded in 1955? He was contemporaries with PR Sarkar and it's clear that that's where he got alot of his inspiration. He created his TM and modeled his world takeover based on PR Sarkar's Prout, and so on. It's obvious. To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' Yahoo! Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: The Desacralization of Hinduism for Western Consumption
Ah, so, he was speaking before a crowd of Yogis during the same time period that PR Sarkar was starting to teach in a village, and therefore its obvious that MMY was inspired by PR Sarkar? You are right, its obvious. Now, if you wanted to claim that MMY's choice of NAMES for his initial organization was inspired by *YOgananda*'s organization, I'll give you no argument. Ananda Marga is not the simple and exoteric Baba Nam Kevalam mantra from the website, rather it is: SAHAJ YOGA-lessons for meditation Sahaj yoga is the name of the basic practices of Ananda Marga meditation. It consists of a system of six lessons. FIRST LESSON - IISHVARA PRAN'IDHANAFirst lesson is the practice of the principle of lishvara Pran'idhana mentioned under Yama and Niyama. This basic meditation has five aspects:1. Physical posture: Lotus pose or padmasana is the best posture for this meditation, for it helps control the senses and keeps the spine erect, enhancing concentration.2. Bhuta shuddhi: Withdrawal of the mind from the physical surroundings.3. Asana shuddhi: Withdrawal of the mind from the body and concentrating the mind in a point known as "Is't'a cakra", the controlling point of the mind. This point varies from person to person.4. Citta shuddhi: Identifying the mind with Cosmic Consciousness.5. Japa: Repition of, and deep identification with the spiritual concept of, one's personal mantra. This effort is directed towards the merger of mind into Cosmic Consciousness, to a transcendental state of infinite bliss. SECOND LESSON - MADHUVIDYAThe second lesson of Ananda Marga meditation is called madhuvidya or "sweet knowledge". It uses a special mantra to remind one that every action is a vibration in the current of Cosmic Consciousness. This helps the meditator be free from the ego-attachment of their actions and helps them remember that everything is done ultimately by Cosmic will. THIRD LESSON - TATTVA DHARANAEach cakra has its own vibrational characteristics of sound, form and colour. The use of certain techniques of concentration combined with special mantras brings a great degree of control over the cakras. These techniques increase concentration, help control the activities of the cakras and assist in regulating the energy flows in the body. FOURTH LESSON - PRAN'AYAMAThere is an undeniable connection between breathing and states of mind. You many notice that when your breathing is quick and irregular (such as after hard exercise) you cannot concentrate well. Likewise, slow, deep breathing leads to deeper focus and a sense of peace. When one controls one's respiration by the scientific process of pran'ayama, the mind gets controlled as well, and concentration increases. FIFTH LESSON - CAKRA SHODHANACakras are subtle energy centres located along the spinalcolumn. Associated with the endocrine glandular system, cakras act as controlling points. SIXTH LESSON - DHYANADhyana is pure contemplation. This form of meditation channelizes every mental propensity towards the spiritual goal. Love is the strongest mental force. When it is awakened in deep meditation and directed towards the Supreme, it is no longer an effort; it becomes a natural attraction that leads the aspirant to the final goal. Any of this sound familiar? Of course it should it's based on Patanjali, as is Maharishi's systen, Sivananda's and so many others. Mantras should have three parts: by Avadhutika Ananda Mitra AcaryaThe mantra is like a rocket engine that propels the mind beyond the "gravitational fields" of the lower levels of consciousness, through all the turbulence of the subconscious mind, to the superconscious - and beyond. Thus, a correct process of meditation involves the generation of immense psychic energy through intense concentration on the mantra. Some systems of meditation which involve internal repetition of certain sounds, advise the meditators not to concentrate on them. Such techniques are quite relaxing and refreshing, but for spiritual elevation, concentration is essential - the intense effort to focus the mind on the mantra. Like the farmer whose mind was concentrated on his sick son, or the chemist concentrated on his research, or the medium concentrated on her crystal ball - the fixed attention of the mind on any object of thought will produce the necessary internal energy to elevate the mind to subtler levels. Experiments on Ananda Marga meditators whose process begins with concentration have shown that, rather than being asleep or passively relaxed, their bodies and minds are in a state of intense physiological activation: more energy, rather than less, is flowing through them. THREE QUALITIES OF A MANTRA: PULSATIVE What is the special effect of the mantra, that by focusing the mind on it,
