Angel, all the Mascot effort happened back when the fedora logo was
restricted for use and part of it took place when it was also ugly
(before we had the "infinity bubble").

These days I still have to receive the complaints about the T-shirts of
the characters used in my comic...

We can have different icon for each of our product line or we can have

More than one mascot? That's overkill.

Brand is something else it can not be disillusioned by mascot

While I think the impact of a mascot on the branding would not be so
damaging, I consider our previous effort about mascots a failure, people
didn't want them.

No wonder people don't know much about our Fedora code Name while
everyone you ask knows the Code name of Ubuntu even better... (like
jaunty hardy gutsy etc...), believe it or not, it´s true. Because,
Ubuntu make the Code name their mascot.

People know a little about the Fedora code name because we have not
pushed it, until a few years ago it was kind of an Easter-egg, known
only by a few.
Ubuntu have to push code names because their numbering scheme is rather
unusual (9.04???)

However, I'm sure large part of "Fedora Community" people will think of
these as threat to our brand Name Fedora.

Not even a cuddly-wuddly Fedora ferret, with a first name starting with
an F? Nicu could draw him in various costumes, little tshirts, or
mittens in the winter.

We could sponsor ferrets at pet stores around the world. We could have
users submit pictures of their own ferrets running "yum update" and
submitting bugs.

According to wikipedia, ferrets are energetic, curious, and have a
"repetoire of behaviors both endearing and difficult". Just like most
of the Fedora community!

Then there's this:

"When ferrets are excited, they may perform a routine commonly referred
to as the weasel war dance, a frenzied series of sideways hops. This is
often accompanied by a soft clucking noise, commonly referred to as
dooking."

I'm picturing a session at a future FUDCon in which we have people do
their own weasel war dance.

In conclusion, who wouldn't want a little critter like this teaching you
all about how to set up a virtual machine, or popping his head out from
behind PackageKit to tell you to update?

this is a description of a continuum. anyway, we could use the aleph

or we could name future releases of Fedora as a sequence of aleph (transfinite)

It can represent unity and continuation. I hope that the idea is merely viewed

I don't support state of completeness. Free Software is movement,
Fedora is project in motion. Stopping and beholding perfectness is not
what i expect from developers, being one of them.

RE: Fedora Mascot?

2008-04-04 Thread David
"Perfection is, broadly, a state of completeness and flawlessness"- Is a
definition not a concept. The idea of 10 being what many view as the perfect
score. A circle is perfect in every aspect. It can represent unity and
continuation. I hope that the idea is merely viewed as that an idea to base
inspiration. I understand that Fedora is a continuous work in progress, but it
can also be displayed as better than the rest. Thanks for your feed back.

I don't think Fedora will ever be "Perfect" given the fact that we're
always "on the edge" and installing potentially unstable software. It's
the price you pay to push innovation.

Or to put it another way... can you take your seahorse idea and rework
it so that its not confusing with the logo?

The other problem is.. we have a desktop application actually named..
seahorse. That's probably a reasonable reason to avoid using a
seahorse as a mascot for Fedora.

Regarding your second proposal, if we will ever have a mascot, it will

What I hoped for was convergence: after a certain number of proposals
are submitted, people start playing with and improving the images
submitted by the other and when *a lot* of people converge on playing by
their own will with one single mascot, we can be certain we found a winner.

So, why don't we make a list of which animals are in danger of
extinction and join them to make a new one?

I am not sure, we can come with a *huge* list with endangered species
but we have not solved anything until someone draw *cute* images of them.
Also, some of those species may be not well known outside a certain
geographical area (they are endangered) so people may ask: what is that?
(but as an apposite argument, something less known is geekier and may
appeal better to our current audience).

Yep, and furthermore one should feel Fedora in it... From the mascots
that were mockuped so far I like most of them (especially the parrot and
the mermaid and merman and Try 9), but only in the parrot I feel a
slight touch of Fedora... dunno why, however.

I see you already uploaded the image, which is a very good looking
image, I like it very much. Welcome!

I hope you will not mind a couple of suggestions:
- a good way to get other involved with your work is to make the sources
available, so they can easily download, tweak, modify;
- I said, I like it very much but I don't think it can work well as a
mascot:

* usually mascots are not humans
* is better for a mascot to have a simpler shape, so it can be easily
re-created by other people

This does not mean the graphic can't be used in any way, have a look at
this poster made by Mairin as an example of how I believe we can use
non-mascot graphics: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SummerOfCode/Posters

Being new, I will use this opportunity to introduce you a few projects
our team is working on, you may know them, other people on the list know
them (and even contributed to them):
- Design Service: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/DesignService is
an initiative for our group to act as a design firm creating graphics
for various entities inside Fedora. Its request queue has increased in
size and could use  some help;
- Desktop Themes: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/F8Themes/ we are
approaching the end date for the Round 2, so the base ideas for this
cycle are defined, but we still need more feedback, adjustments, polishing.

I will also introduce you to some places where you can interact with the
community:
- Mugshot has a pretty inactive Fedora Art group
http://mugshot.org/group?who=DrZ42qVjmPWmnh but a more active general
Fedora group http://mugshot.org/group?who=qF6wdtBPcy3D8T
- deviantART is a place where many of us publish so we have there a
group: http://fedora-art.deviantart.com/
- our flickr group http://flickr.com/groups/fedora-art/ is used very
little, but if we like it, is possible to use it more.

Do I forgot something?

Go ahead and do it yourself; add the image using the Attatchments link
to the right of the wiki page and upload it. Go back to the page and
click Edit, typing in something like:

where you want it to be placed. Use the Preview button to see if it's

Don't worry, there is always a way of pulling it back if it all goes wrong :)

I have a possible mascot that I would like to add to the wiki, but I really
don't know if I should modify the wiki by myself or give my art to someone.

I already have editing privileges as the list shows [1]

So, I would like to know if I should wait for something else to upload my

The response from the team to the initiative was pretty low, so we did
not pursued it harder.
Personally I intended at some point to revive the interest with a blog
post but was busy with other thing and forgot about that. Maybe I'll
blog about it later today...

Idle status at the moment. Given the time constraint for Fedora 8.
having mascot is not really a high priority.

But the mascot is not tied with the release in any way, the graphics is
not planned to be included in the downloadable bits, so we can release
it when is ready.
Alignment of some kind with the release schedule may be nice just from a
marketing point of view, a publicity stunt.

[Fedora Mascot] What's the current status?

2007-07-19 Thread Martin Sourada
Hi,

I see the Mascot page [1] is little outdated - Last edit in the April...
Was actually any Mascot selected for promoting Fedora or the development
died out? I'm just pinging how's it going, as I am not quite sure about
the status.

Also I'd like to add my two cents as to which I would like to see as our
mascot. I really like the parrot (try 6)[2]. I somehow feel the fedora
in him... I would pick the one without T-shirt (or maybe with the
t-shirt but without the fedora logo). Also the aliens [3] from try 4 are
also very nice and representative, IMHO.

Hehe +1, they've got to be able to do stuff.

I think so, but with a cuter character.

Does it have to be cute? Can it be someone very smart / cool / funny but
perhaps not cute? E.g., ipod kind of has the dancing people
(http://images.google.com/images?q=ipod+people&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=5fK&um=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=title),

I guess it might be easier to sketch some different possibilities and
send them out first :)

A problem I see: we as a team are spread around the world, so the
characters/mascots, TV commercials and products we see every day are not
exactly the same so we really need to use something like youtube.

See, I don't see this as a problem at all. It's a totally sweet advantage :)

looking for, right?

I think so, but with a cuter character.

From the thread on marketing-list and some comments I saw in our IRC
channel, I think some of the main points being brought up as issues to
solve are:

1) the Fedora logo is somewhat impersonal
2) it's not 'ours' - eg the community didn't create it and doesn't own
it so we're restricted in using it

3) it's not very good fodder for plush animals :)
4) it seems many suspect it doesn't reach out to as broad an audience as
a well-done mascot might.

Also the official logo don't give me the artistic freedom to create
something like this: http://nicubunu.ro/pictures/otto_dueling.svg (old
and ugly images, but I hope you get the idea)

I think probably the main goal for a mascot for Fedora, then, to be
derived from the list of issues above: a community-created and
maintained mascot for the Fedora project that brings a friendly
personality to the project and reaches out to our target audience.

This is fine.

Of course, a very difficult question I think is: who is our target
audience?

One idea for moving forward would be for us to think of what
characters/mascots/ even TV commercials we associate with different
products and try to figure out what we like/don't like about each. We
could go through youtube.com, for example, and look for popular/funny
commercials that worked, that people liked and uploaded.

+1 for a custom character. We can then use it to create lost of poses etc.

I suggest to concentrate on the character and not the image. I'd think that a
guy named "Bob" that looks like these http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Join is
better than a shiny thing like Firefox which is hard to adopt in various poses
and contexts.

Ideally it should:

 * Look daring/fearless (reflecting Fedora's vision for bleeding-edge)
 * At the same time friendly/earnest and potentially serious
 * Be simple enough to easily yield a stuffed puppet

An example for the above is FreeBSD's daemon mascot:

 * http://www.freebsd.org/art.html

And OpenBSD's:

 * http://www.openbsd.org/art/wanthead2.gif
 * http://www.openbsd.org/art/blowfish.jpg

As for some preliminary rules, I think we need something:
- Free, so it can be used without any restriction (not even trademarks);
+1 I wouldn't say public domain though? Maybe just a plain CC
attribution (attribute the Fedora Project) - derivs are OK.
- lovable, this is the purpose of a mascot;

+1
- produced by the community, it should not be someone's baby but our
community's baby.

I will think a bit about it and lay down a page in the wiki, but in the
meantime, please come with initiatives, ideas, proposals or even
metaphors or sketches.

As for some preliminary rules, I think we need something:
- Free, so it can be used without any restriction (not even trademarks);
- lovable, this is the purpose of a mascot;
- produced by the community, it should not be someone's baby but our
community's baby.

O.K., so, it should be the *Byte* a not infantilizating mascot of FEDORA, seriously: it's about graphics design, when it's naive it may  look infantile. The other way, a mascot could bring more of sympathy with FEDORA, some people like mascots.

I think there was a little talk about having a mascot, but without a
final resolution, so is not decided if we will have a mascot or not.

If you have an idea, my opinion is: fire it up! If we bring a very cute
proposal I believe the chances for Fedora to adopt a mascot will increase.

Of course, we can start a very slow and bureaucratic approach: discuss
if we want a mascot or not, vote, talk about the metaphor, vote again,
make some concurrent designs and vote once more. But having something
uber-cute from the start may be a shortcut for this entire process :p

For the mascot, why not take the style of Nicolas Rougier
(http://www.loria.fr/~rougier/index.php?n=Artwork.Gnu) and make a
dragoon or another creature that look like these ones.
