Usually to confirm that your memory modules are working fine its
advisable to wait for the better half of a day. I had similar problems
a few years back, and I finally Identified the bad module after 2-3
days of testing. But of course in that case I had to test four 1gig
modules. That can be a lot of permutations, 4 modules 4 banks so 4 x 4
= 16 possible combos to test.

You are going to need lots of patience and good luck :)

The best solution for that type of web page has already been given. You
need to recall that the authors of Flash have designed it with the media
suppliers in mind. Those types that don't want you to download and keep
their content.

If you, and others, would simply use google and type "how to save flash
video linux" you'd find the exact same solution as was given.

Flashgot has got nothing to do with Flash. In this context "flash"
means "quick". As in, "I'll be there in a flash".

Hi All,

This is the final version of my backup script. I have gone through the
script once to make sure there are no mistakes. If I want to capture any
errors during the execution of the backup/cloning script, which of the
following commands do I run?

# ./backup-script.sh > backup.log

OR

# ./backup-script.sh 2> backup.log

After completing the backup script, I will proceed to write the restore
script.

If there are any errors, please let me know because I do not want to make
any mistakes with the cloning process. Thank you.

you can go with Bitdefender also (it is free for home users) get it
from here[1] they are having GUI version and Non-GUI version too for
FreeBSD and other distro.(32bit and 64bit ) . it can detect windows
virus

it is very useful if you are sharing the data/files with M$ user ( off
course to protect those M$ OS )

I know this. I gess I didn´t express myself quite well.

Is there any other solution for this problem where it isn´t necessary

Notice the maximum release it prints out:

nuxeo ECM, and where is Context.compressReader() in openJDK?

2009-11-13 Thread Robert P. J. Day

let me see how succinct i can make this. i'm writing a doc on how
to install and build the open source nuxeo ECM software on fedora
using openJDK-1.6.0:

http://www.crashcourse.ca/wiki/index.php/Nuxeo_on_Fedora

nothing deep about simply downloading and installing the zip file,
that works fine.

however, trying to build the mercurial checkout fails, as you can
read further down that page. as i read it (and i could be wrong), the
failure is the result of trying to call the java method
Context.compressReader(), which i don't see exists anymore -- it's
entirely missing from this page:

http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/apidocs/org/mozilla/javascript/Context.html

and that certainly seems to be the problem based on the build error
message, no?

someone from nuxeo just pointed out that they don't guarantee a
successful build under openJDK, only under *sun's* java. so does that
mean sun's java *would* have that class method? or am i
misinterpreting this? just for the entertainment value, it would be
nice to finish that build with openJDK. does anyone here know what
the story is for Context.compressReader()? am i reading correctly
that it simply doesn't exist in openJDK?

just for fun, i attached the offending .java file, it's only 69
lines long so java gurus can see clearly what's being imported.

  thoughts?

*sigh* Another source of errors. One would assume that highest package

yes, i'd already found that page and realized what was happening
there. all i really want to confirm is that the code above that's
failing is failing because it's badly-behaved and calling a
non-standard extension that will cause it to break under openjdk.

What is normally recommended is that you run memtest86+. First you have
to install it as it isn't installed by default. Then, AFAIK, the best
way to run it is standalone. Meaning from boot. As an example, I have
the following in my /boot/grub.conf file.

title Memtest86+
root (hd0,0)
kernel /memtest86+-2.11 ro root=/dev/mapper/vg_f11-lv_root rhgb

Also, I have

timeout=8
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu

to ensure I can get to select what I want :-)

Since the problem is intermittent, you should leave it running for an
extended period.

Ed

The other option I forgot to mention is to download the bootable CD
image from http://www.memtest86.com/ and boot from the CD that you burn.

... or just boot with a Fedora CD or DVD and select memtest in in the
boot options menu. :)

could there be another explanation?
I will run this test now and get back to you after it is done

YB.

How frequently was the error occurring? I would wait at least twice that
long if memtest doesn't report any errors. The computer will be off line
for that period. That's why I just replace the memory cards. I can put
the computer is back in service. If the error returns after that, I am
no worse off than before, but then I can decide whether to replace the
box or take the time to do further troubleshooting.

Make sure you run the test under the same conditions as the computer
normally operates, covers on, in the rack, etc. Memory is very sensitive
to a number of environmental and functional variations, including
temperature, write/read sequencing and even address sequences. Testing
it on the bench with the covers off will change those conditions
significantly.

Many years ago there were articles published about how to create schmoo
test patterns to detect errors that only occurred with specific
densities of '1' bits in sections of the die. Each test was specific to
one particular memory chip. Now that the manufacturing processes have
matured, I believe that class of tests is only used in production prior
to cutting the chips the from the wafer. However, memtest probably
includes some of those tests.

Note that this VM (and some other VMs listed in your script) uses
logical partitions. In this case just saving a copy of MBR will not
be enough to save partition layout - MBR describes only 4 primary
partitions, and restoring just MBR will not restore extended
 partitions.

One way to backup the complete partition layout is by saving also
the output of "sfdisk -d $device"; the resulting file can be used as
input to sfdisk to restore all partitions, including logical ones.
Saving MBR is still needed together with sfdisk, because it saves
the boot code (used for HVM) and CHS geometry information (which can
be used during boot in some cases).

I can give two reasons:

1) The video in the link provided by OP is broken, and apparently
cannot be played outside Canada. So the majority of people on this
list cannot reproduce the problem the OP is having. And the generic
answer has already been posted, for google-impaired people, a
millionth time now.
2) The OP could simply ask "please help me download the video from
this link", without the political bloat in the message subject and
body. The fact that he insisted on it even after being warned that
people on this list are not interested in discussing politics marks
him as a troll in people's eyes, so nobody wishes to engage in the
discussion.

Oh, please, it's just copying one file from the /tmp directory! If you
want a GUI for this, create a button in your favourite launcher and
have it execute

  cp /tmp/Flash* ~

Then, when you want to save some flash video you are watching in the
browser, wait until it is buffered completely, and then click the damn
button. It really cannot get any simpler than that.

Of course, you can always make it more complicated, by having a GUI
that will ask you to name the file, wait until it is completely
buffered, handle multiple simultaneous flash videos from several
browsers, have a trillion of useless clickable configuration options,
cook a coffee for you while you wait, watch over your kid while you
are watching videos, etc, but I think it is just not worth the effort.
Those who think it is worth the effort should create a bash script
that does all that and have that script invoked with the button.

HTH, :-)

Rhino is javascript, not java. It's not part of the Java API.

No. Rhino is not part of Java: it is present in openjdk, but it
isn't strictly part of Java. We need it for LiveConnect.

That's right. I wouldn't call it badly behaved, but it is depending on
a nonstandard extension to Rhino.

Hello,

On Fedora11 (64 bits), working in graphics mode, the sceeensaver

gears is one of the screesavers. Why is it activated when I am working.
There is not other Xsession opened, no other user, and nothing on the
screen (ie. gears) !

It looks like that it is only runnning in background and consumming PCU.
I can easy kill the process, but after 5 minutes again another one is
going to run (in background like hypertorus) even if I am working !

Is the screensaver inapropriatedly configurated ?

Thank for your ideas.

The command was originally make for a kernel version 2.4, but I don't know
what change for the command to run on a kernel version 2.6.
I would like your help

ok, i think i've finally clued in here. i do, in fact, have the
rhino package installed here on f12 beta:

$ rpm -qa "*rhino*"
rhino-1.7-0.7.r2.fc12.noarch
$

but if i unload the jar file for it and take a look at the Context
class, well ...

$ javap Context | grep compress
$

so i see what you mean now. ergo, if i want that aforementioned code
to work, i'll need to grab a 3rd-party package that provides that
functionality. thanks.

Yes it can :-) :

$ ln /tmp/Flash-stuff.flv /tmp/Flash-stuff.flv.save

Note that this is a hard link. Use a "for" loop in your script if you
want to save /tmp/Flash*. Doing it this way means a) you don't
physically copy the file and b) you don't have to wait for it to finish
downloading before deciding to grab it.

However these methods don't always work. I seem to remember seeing sites
that unlink the /tmp file immediately after creating it. If that happens
you'd need to poke around in /proc//fd.

In the context of this list it's important to distinguish free as in

is minimized.

Thanks for the response.
I'm away from home at the moment, so can't try what you suggest.
But I don't understand one point:
Isn't /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ normally cleared after "yum
update"?

See the original post, which noted that /etc/yum.conf needs keepcache set
to 1.

Ok, thanks, I missed that.
Must have fallen into the sea somewhere between Ireland and Italy.

I suppose you just have to clear the cache every now and then?
How do you do that, as a matter of interest?

You want to use the repomanage package, it can list or remove old packages, just
keeping the most recent version (or several). No man page, but the --help option
gives all you need.

Avoid the "clean" stuff in yum, it doesn't do what you need, and may delete all
the stuff you want to keep, rather than just the old stuff. If you want to be
able to roll back you can get a list of just the old stuff and archive it.

Works really well for me. Good luck!

How to prevent horizontal scrolling from switching apps and desktops

2009-11-13 Thread Wendell Nichols
I use fedora on a thinkpad with a synaptics touch pad mouse. I find it
to be very good except for one thing; an accidental gesture across the
mousepad will cause the desktop so switch between applicaitons on the
current desktop, or, depending where the mouse is, to scroll across
desktops. This results in a flurry of motion on the screen and then
leaves me to find which of the 8 desktops I was on, an then which of the
8 or 10 apps per desktop I was using. ya I have a busy system which is
why I use linux!
Is there any way to disable this behavior? I've installed the touchpad
tool and it did not help do disable horizontal scrolling.

your ideas will be welcome :)

I agree. I was disappointed that I couldn't get it set up with
system-config-network and firestarter. I'll look back in my Linux notes

# FAQ
# Q: Why do I want to write this cloning script when there are many open
source cloning software available?
# A: I am previously using Clonezilla. It is a very good cloning software.
However, it could not detect all the
#virtual machines in my LVM2 logical volumes and had to fall back on
using dd to image all my domUs,
#which resulted in an enormous 300 GB (!) backup image set and an
extremely lengthy cloning process of
#7 hours. Clonezilla is very good for LVs which only contain
filesystems, but not for LVs which contain
#virtual machines with MBR, partition geometries and full fledged
operating systems. It is very diffcult
#to image nested logical volumes, i.e. logical volumes within logical
volumes. And the PV within a LV is
#the barrier. So it is not Clonezilla's fault. Anybody who knows how to
activate all the logical volumes
#of all the volume groups within LVM2 physical volumes inside a logical
volume hosting a virtual machine,
#please share your knowledge with me. Thank you very much.

I have been converted to using UUIDs also,

easy/worthwhile to convert back to using labels.
In my experience, the UUID for the rootfs
is also hidden away in the init file in the initrd.img.
If one tries to convert from UUID to labels, doesn't
the init file have to be changed also?
(That requires unpacking, editing the init, repacking.)
Or is it OK to leave UUID in that init file, but labels elsewhere?

I am convinced that UUID makes things less convenient but more reliable. One
experience with labels and a USB disk was enough for me, if I hadn't noticed
that the f/s was mounted in the wrong disk data would have been lost.

There are tools to change UUID if you must, but I would rather not in virtually
all cases.

I presume that I'll need to do a "grub-install /dev/sde", at least that is
the plan. Then fix the /etc/fstab file on the new drive, powerdown, pull the

Have I missed anything?

It is more a matter of how many passes, rather then how long. For a
quick test, one or two passes will do. But for a good test, I like
to see at least 50 passes. This will normally find obscure problems.
It also subjects the memory to temperature changes.

Once you are satisfied with the test, hit the Esc key, and the
system will do a graceful reboot.

I am not sure about system-config-printers, but for the CUPS web
interface, you can set up other user name/group/password
combinations that have administrator access. You can also limit the
type of access specific groups have.

Take a look at the /etc/cups/cups.conf file. You may also want to
read the cups.conf man page...

I click on the network manager icon in the upper right corner, which
opens a list of wifi networks. I select one. After it has been busy
for a while, a balloon opens saying "network has been disconnected" or
something like that.

 Take care

Perhaps you could file a bug report and include
the /var/log/cups/error_log* files you have? That would help me track
down why the printer became disabled.

Can you describe how that scenario was done? I have a 40GB One touch, and a
64 meg and an 8GB key, and would rather avoid the potential if I could see it
coming.

For my main drive failure 2 days ago, I got another drive, gparted it the way
I wanted it, wrote a script to drive rsync -abcAX (with an added H for the
/etc tree since I knew there are hard links there) and
I did the labels, fixed grub.conf and fstab on the new drive, had to do a
couple of grub-install ops, all this after rsync'ing a failing drive to a
fresh one I setup with gparted, partitioned the way I like it. It works, and
at the instant, my major problem is amanda, it thinks everything is new so
its trying to do a level 0 backup on a 35GB tape, of a 115GB system. I will
give it more vtapes for tonight's run so it can play catchup.

As others mentioned I think these originally went into xorg.conf.
However, with F11 as far as I remember all I did was put an xmodmap
command into my .bash_profile file:

   if [ -n "`echo $DISPLAY | egrep '^(localhost)?:0'`" ]; then
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 17 3 4 5 8 9 6 7 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 2
18 19 20"
   fi

This was for (I think) a Logitech MX performance at work, and something
like an M500 at home. The tilting wheel works, but you may want to remap
the button numbers to suit your own needs.

Do I need to go to the i686 Kernel? and if so, how do I get yum to do

will yum manage that or will I need to re-install from scratch?

This system was upgraded via the 10-11 upgrade by yum.

If you successfully upgraded to F11 you no longer need the F10 kernel
or the kmod-em8300 packages. You can safely remove them from your
system.

RE: Fedora 11 newbie question

2009-11-13 Thread Shadow
Hi all - I need someone to answer a question and maybe give some advice.
I downloaded Fedora 11 to install on an older piece of hardware. My
thoughts were to create a test server to test PHP site that I plan to
do. It could also act as a web server for my internal network, but that
isn't a priority. I have a little experience with Fedora (Fedora 2) but
nothing more recent.

I got Fedora 11 installed, and started to add packages. During a
reboot, I lost the ability to log in through the GUI. I could not
figure out what happened so I temporarily dropped the project for a
week. Now I am back on it...I found a posting in the forum that
mentioned logging in to the virtual interface by using ALT-CNTL-F2 and I
was successful in logging in as root. The same posting mentioned that
this problem happen due to some problem with X11 server and that
downgrading it using YUM would solve the problem - didn't help me. So
digging in the boot log, I noticed that the only error was httpd - I got
a MAKE_SOCK error due to the fact that the httpd address was in use.
That was the only error shown. So I am thinking that is causing my log
in problem.

My qustion(s) - How do I find out what is bound to httpd? How do I
disable iteither httpd or whatever is bound to it using the command
line interface? Am I on the right track to solve the log in using the
GUI?

Thanks for any help

The error message you posted says that the document contains an error. Perhaps
you're in the same situation that sometime occurs where a document with an
error will display under IE but not under Firefox. The solution is to fix the
document.

As long as the UUID in init (in initrd) and the root entry in
grub.conf (whether UUID, LABEL, or /dev/) point to the same
partition, you are OK.

That it why you can switch the grub.conf entries without having to
change the UUID (or whatever other way that you are pointing to the
root partition).

"one of" is ambiguous here. IF you mean you have both gnome-

to lock the screen, if you want that. It can be very irritating ...

Backup all data you can and get a new hard drive. That's probably the

If you have lots of money that's the recommended solution.
However if it's just one bad sector you may not even be able to RMA the drive
under warranty.

You can use the smartctl (from smartmontools) to see how many bad sectors
you had had so far and how many of those are pending for remapping.

Depending on the file system on the device the following may help you find
out if any of your bad sectors are in files:

That's mild, Bill, I have to spend the rest of the day staring at an urn with
a long time employee's ashes in it. Not my fav thing to do.

But, as you all know, I run the latest bleeding edge kernels here, so as soon
as I got it running on the new drive last night, I built and installed
2.6.32-rc7.

Now, I have no idea if it is the radeon/drm changes in the new kernel, or if
its because the drive was well organized after copying everything over with
rsync, but while glxgears is still its leisurely 270 fps, this machine feels
about 10x snappier than it did, I mean the diff is extremely obvious.

"one of" is ambiguous here. IF you mean you have both gnome-

This what I have:

xscreensaver-gl-base-5.10-1.fc11.x86_64
kdeartwork-screensavers-4.3.2-1.fc11.x86_64

So, what should I remove ?
I just want to to have gnome shift to lock-screen saver after a while
or be able to active the mode screensaver manually.

Thank for your help.

I believe this was Tom H's question, not mine although I am the threads OP.

You may want to check your facts on that actually being in the initrd file.
My 2.6.32-rc6 initrd, copied from the failing drive with 'rsync -avcAX src
target' syntax, which I booted with after swapping a new drive onto the sata1
connector, did not require a rebuild, I simply changed grub.conf to use a
'root=LABEL=sea-slash' while in rescue mode and chroot'ed, fixed a couple of
other typu's, did a 'grub-install /dev/sda" and rebooted. If its in there,
then it is apparently being over-ridden by the data in the new /etc/fstab.

I have since installed 2.6.32-rc7, and as noted in a previous msg a few
minutes ago, the machine is obviously much snappier now.

Logically, the root (hd0,0) must over-ride any UUID's that may be in the
initrd.img, otherwise it could not possibly have found even the grub.conf to
show me at boot time.

Some _real_ docs on grub would be VERY nice.

>That it why you can switch the grub.conf entries without having to
>change the UUID (or whatever other way that you are pointing to the

In my case, /boot is a separate partition, so in base 0 notation, its all
'root (hd0,0)' on a line by itself. And it Just Works(TM) I can, in a
different grub.conf stanza on (hd0,0)/grub/grub.conf, specify root (hd3,0),
then the UUID of the / partition that contains another distributions /
directory and boot to it just fine.

question about fedora version of packages

2009-11-13 Thread François Patte
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Bonsoir,

I run fedora 10: fedora texlive* packages are installed.

In texmf.cnf we can read:

% original texmf.cnf -- runtime path configuration file for kpathsea.
% (If you change or delete `original' on the previous line, the
% distribution won't install its version over yours.)

OK. So I wanted to make changes to this file to fit my config and I
deleted "original" from the first line.

At the first update my texmf.cnf with the deleted "original" and with
the changes I have made has been crushed... and I had to make my
personal config again...

Where is the mistake?

Thanks.

I don't trust myself to get all that math right (and guessing about the
underlying remapping).

What I do is just copy the data to a good disk and then write zeros over
the bad disk. This will clean up all Current_Pending_Sectors (bad
sectors that haven't been reallocated yet) and turn them into
Reallocated_Sector_Ct sectors.

I'm getting a lot of experience doing this. For some reason my current
crop of Seagate 7200.11 and 7200.12 are all developing unreadable
sectors. I guess the Seagate perpendicular recording disks weren't
quite ready for prime time. Almost -- but not quite.

The fastest way I found to zero the disk is to use the security erase
feature. A disk that takes 4 hours to be zeroed with dd can be zeroed
in 2 hours with the built-in security erase. It took me a while to
figure out how to get the security erase hooks to do anything but give
me the "IO ERROR" errno. This seems to be the simplest way to get an
erase to take place. (Suggestions and simplifications welcome!)

disk=/dev/sdb
pass=funkystuff

hdparm --user-master u --security-set-pass $pass $disk
hdparm --user-master u --security-erase$pass $disk
hdparm --user-master u --security-disable $pass $disk

Recent kernels don't play well with suspend-to-disk

2009-11-13 Thread Geoffrey Leach
Kernels since kernel-PAE-2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i686 up to and incuding
kernel-PAE-2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i686 seem to have a problem with suspend-
to-disk.

Why do I say this? Two behaviors. First, up until the most recent
kernel, I get non-fatal kernel errors that resulted in a spew of error
messages to each active terminal window, sometimes accompanied by a
notice that kerneloops has sent off a report. This, of course, after
one or more resume-from-disk. Reboot cures the problem temporarliy. The
most recent kernel failed toresume-from-disk in the boot process,
freezing up with a bunch of page fault errors. (Yes, I know I shoud
have copied/saved all of this). The only variable here appears to be
the kernel rebooting with 2.6.30.5-43 makes the problem vanish.

Obviosuly there's not enough here to debug the problem. The fact that
its not going away suggests that the kerneloops reports are
insufficient.

So, (a) anyone else having the problem? (b) suggestions for gathering
enough data to make a Bugzilla report worthwhile?

Also, it can help to enable Automatic Offline Testing (with `smartctl
-o on /dev/sdx`), which will scan the disk frequently and will often
be able to remap a sector before it becomes unreadable.

Removing Palimpsest (gnome-disk-utility) is the most practical way to
make it not complain foolishly. Instead, use smartd, from the same
package as smartctl (smartmontools); it can be set up to only complain
about real problems.

If you have it correct, an attempt to dd /from/ it will fail. If dd
