Please reply if you need to ( ie must) use the proprietary nvidia driver
instead of the nouveau driver.

Or some other video driver that doesn't support kernel mode switching.

DON'T reply otherwise, I don't want to hear a debate on the free
versions versus proprietary or anything else.

If you are using the proprietary nvidia driver or some other non kms
equipped driver, how are you finding F12 ? Ie do you experience

Thanks

But if you cloned the drives then they will both have the same UUIDs.
Also, you are booting two systems with the same logical volumes. When
you boot, Fedora is going to mount the first one it finds. I suggest
renaming your volume group on your external drive to something else.

I can't check this out because I don't have the latest graphics
hardware. However, from the release notes you should be able to append
"nomodeset" to grub to disable KMS and "vga=" should work.

I've been doing hard disk installs for quite a while now, and
since fedora 10 (I think it was) you do indeed need the
install.img file from the iso.

Here's the procedure I have now used successfully many
times:

1. Get the iso image stashed in a directory which contains
no other .iso file on a partition that will survive the
install. Let's use a specific example from my system.
I have a external USB drive mounted at /backup with
the disk label BACKUP and lots of iso images stashed
in /backup/iso-images subdirectories.

cd /backup/iso-images/Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD/
mkdir mnt
mount -o loop Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso mnt
mkdir images
cp mnt/images/install.img images
mkdir /boot/f12
cp mnt/isolinux/initrd.img /boot/f12
cp mnt/isolinux/vmlinuz /boot/f12
umount mnt
rmdir mnt

Now edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and add an entry
like this (adjusting the hd0,4 or whatever appropriately):

title Install Fedora 12 x86_64
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/f12/vmlinuz
repo=hd:LABEL=BACKUP:/iso-images/Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD/
initrd /boot/f12/initrd.img

Things to note: It is much simpler to have the install.img file
extracted in the images directory next to the iso image than to
provide separate boot parameters to say where it is.

Using the LABEL= syntax to specify which disk seems to be
essential as well, since anaconda appears to quite frequently
enumerate the disks in a different order than the current installed
linux does (so you may think it is /dev/sdc, but when anaconda
boots, it is really /dev/sdb, then it can't find the files, etc).

Now all you have to do is reboot and pick the "Install" item
when it gets to grub, and off you go...

Thanks.
But since there actually is a file called install.img
involved centrally in this process,
to use the term "installation image" for another file
seems bound to cause confusion.
Why not just call it the ISO file, or .iso file?

In the past, and it may be your problem now, that issue has arose when
the user pictures are stored in their own directories, and their
homespace has permissions that doesn't allow access to other users,
likewise for child directories and the image file, itself. For GDM (and
most probably KDM, too), it's a special user that runs the login screen.

Agreed, and that is the best reference

I was looking again at this reference,
and I really don't think it is very good,
or likely to be helpful to someone trying to boot from hard disk.

In the first place, I would have thought that almost anyone doing this
would want to (or need to) avoid CDs or DVDs altogether,
by abstracting vmlinuz, initrd.img and the images directory
from the ISO file,
and adding a stanza to grub.conf to boot from these.

All those do is give you enough of a system to boot and run the
installer. They do NOT include the items necessary to install Fedora.

For that you need the Packages directory.

There are no instructions for doing this, as far as I can see.
The implication seems to be that the user is running a Fedora CD or DVD,
and then wants to install from hard disk,
which seems bizarre to me.

Not at all. CDs and DVDs are much slower than hard drives and are
subject to all the possible errors inherent with non-contact, removable
media (scratches, dirt, etc.).

If you can boot from CD or DVD, why not install that way?

Actually, the whole Installation Guide, while beautifully produced
and full of interesting information,
strikes me as more or less useless for anyone actually wanting
to install Fedora.
I get the impression the authors have never put themselves
in the position of a likely reader of the Guide,
who is almost certainly asking,
"I want to install Fedora. What should I do?"

The portions of the manual dealing with network or hard disk installs
are intended for more experienced users. The vast majority of newbies
will simply burn the ISO image to a CD or DVD and boot that. Anaconda
is pretty simple from there.

Even at that, a lot of newbies burn the actual ISO file to a disc
(ending up with a disc with one file on it), when they're supposed to
use the ISO file as a "disk image" to burn the disc.

If you can find a way to make computer software installation absolutely
foolproof, yet accessible to everyone regardless of skill level or
experience, then PATENT IT QUICKLY! You'll make a mint!

Rick,

That is correct. (I am the OP.)

This "hard disk" install requires having an available partition
completely separate from his current fedora.
There is no notion, afaik, of
"install a new Fedora on top of an already running Fedora"
as you put it, whatever you might mean by "on top of".

This "hard disk" install does point to the f12 iso,
but it also requires extracting the vmlinuz, initrd.img, and install.img
from the iso, which i think requires doing the loopback mount.
The install.img is placed in a "images" directory.
There are strict requirements on where that images dir is to be placed;
I am not sure, but i think the OP did this part correctly.
Where he might be going wrong is how he interacts with Anaconda,
as I tried to explain in my earlier reply

As I mentioned in a post above, this worked fine
when I moved the Fedora ISO and the images directory
to the top level on another partition.
I'm not sure what I did wrong before.

The installer wants you to specify the disk partition where the .iso
is, AND the full path to the directory. So, if it's on your /home
directory (on partition /dev/sda5) and in your "/home/tim/images"
directory, then you'd tell the installer:

/dev/sda5 (for the partition)
/tim/images (for the directory)

Same here, abrt keeps popping up when I close Firefox. It happened with
3.5.5 and now also happens with 3.5.6. Triage guys must be going crazy with
this, it's been reported dozens of times already...

Regarding Flash, 64-bit alpha version 10.0.32.18 used to work very nice for

weirdly on Firefox (eg. ignoring mouse clicks on most of YouTube embedded

Which still leaves the question: Are there any .psfu console fonts
bigger than 16 pixels high? (Like closer to 32 or 48 pixels maybe)?
Or tools to convert existing fonts to .psfu?

The /usr/share/doc/kbd-1.15 directory does seem to document the
font format fairly well, perhaps I can just write a program to
render glyphs to a pixmap, then dump the pixmaps as .psfu fonts...

As I expected, KMS knows better than me what to do :-). It utterly
ignores the vga= setting. I do see the strange and wondrous
kernel option SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 provided by anaconda.
Perhaps if I knew where that was defined I could determine if
there is a better alternate available (if that really is being

The Nokia devices are way cool but they are pricey.

You can get an Acer Aspire One for $300-$350 and run a full blown Fedora
on it (1Gb RAM, 160Gb HD, 1024x600 screen)

The iPhone is what it is. I got a Motorola Android G2 about a month ago
and I love it and it seems to have 'Corporate Mail' application which is
specifically designed for Exchange server activity (but I've never tried
it).

Unforch that marries you to a distribution kernel that may be 2-3 releases
old. So I use an ATI card, and radeonhd in 2.6.32 runs it slowly but trashy.

Define "must". I use the driver from rpmfusion, not because I "must",
but because I choose to.

I have dual monitors at work, driven by an NVidia NVS 290. It does
work on F12 with nouveau as I tried it. But I lose 3D acceleration
which I "like" (not need) because I find that some of the Compiz
effects actually speed my workflow. (things like window previews are
reasonably useful when you have tens of terminals or browser windows
open)

I would say that I need to use the proprietary driver, because it
improves my work - but there is no technical necessity.

I have no problems in this area. I find the rpmfusion provided driver
more stable for what I want to do than nouveau.

I know its off topic from Fedora, but Maemo looks very slick. Its
starting to build a base of users and developers.

And although its Gnome based, it now supports Qt stuff and a switch or
full dual support can't be far off being that Nokia bought Qt.

You don't need to jailbreak to use ssh to log into your lab
servers--there's an app (or three) for that. It even does X, and
there's a VNC client, too. There's even an app for tn3270 for those of

You do need to jailbreak to log into your iPhone from your lab servers,

I agree, I don't like how locked up it is, but it does do slick like
Apple always does. It looks like Android and some other smartphone OS's

I don't think f12's default kdm theming (Constantine) supports the UserList
feature. (ie, you'll need to use a different theme that does).

I think I first came across it when installing Fedora-10,
which I believe was the first distribution
where it was necessary to abstract install.img

I guess I would first have read of it here,

User image for "About me" in taskbar in f12?

2009-12-23 Thread Mike Cloaked
I have more than one machine running f12 - I use the gnome desktop with kdm as
the login manager.

The machines run fine with one small slight irritation - on the taskbar as has
been usual in gnome it is possible to select an image when you right click the
username and click the image at the top left of the window that opens. However
this image is not seen when you close the personal details window. Also the
same
avatar should appear in the kdm greeter screen alongside the username to select
to login - but in f12 it does not appear to do so.

In f11 with the same process I do get the image displayed on the taskbar next
to
the username in gnome, and also in the kdm greeter screen. In my f12 machines
although the image looks just fine within the personal details window, it does
not appear on the taskbar or in the kdm greeter.

Does anyone else see this ? Was there a policy change that is in place for f12?
Am I doing something dumb and if so what should I do to get the behaviour that
I
would like for this?

Thanks

They must be jailbroken if you want to do much with them. We wanted a
good Skype/ VOIP application since the 3G network coverage isn't nearly
as good as plain GSM.

I think I would much, much prefer the N900. I found out that davmail
can be use with an iPhone. We'll see what my wife says.

I might get an N900 just for myself. What would stop one from running
Fedora on it ? I guess ubuntu would be a closer fit ?

That reference is(was) particularly important for showing explicitly
that you need the leading slash {"/") for the directory.
The leading slash needed starting in F10,
prior to F10 no leading slash, which caused much confusion
when attempting hdinstall starting from F10 (see bugzilla ref below).

Well, you seem to have figured it out, congrats!
May I ask, just where did you find the instructions re install.img,?

I myself depended heavily on the references following;
not much on the fedora site

A problem is that many systems switch the order of the drive assignments on
the boot from the USB drive. The /boot/grub/device.map file has to reflect
what the system is doing. This order is passed to grub with the line

root (hdX,n)

in /boot/grub/grub.conf where X is the drive and n is the partition number
of the partition with /boot.

If you run in a root terminal session the commands

fdisk -l

to see exactly what the device names are. Then run

vol_id -u /dev/sdXn

Where X is the drive and n is the partition number. You will get the UUID
for the partitions. You can then edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and make the
kernel line specify explicitly the partitions you want to use with the
syntax

root=UUID=...

An additional complication is that some utilities get confused when there
are multiple drive partitions with the same label. Running from the
internal drive without the usb drive, you can use e2label to change the
labels on the internal drive.

If you are still having trouble, post the output from fdisk -l, UUIDs and
your grub.conf file for more help.

You might want to check out Davmail:

http://davmail.sourceforge.net/

It will talk to Microsoft's web based mail/scheduler and proxy it as
more standard protocols. Then your small device only needs to talk
those standard protocols to interact. It would mean that you would have
to have tomcat or something installed on an internet accessible host,
but that seems easier than figuring out how to get evolution onto
symbian or android.

What is the smallest device that will run Fedora 12 ? Evolution ? Kontact ?

2009-12-23 Thread Linuxguy123
My wife is a busy professional person. The organization she works for
uses Microsoft applications for scheduling and email. The users access
their information via web browsers. She is using the Safari browser on
her iPhone to gain access to her information.

My wife needs better access to her schedule and email. Right now if she
doesn't have an Internet connection she doesn't have access. And the
web user interface was designed to be used with a desktop computer with
a large monitor, not a small handheld device like an iPhone.

There must be a better way.

I understand that some of the OS desktop apps (Evolution and Kontact)
are going to be working with Microsoft Exchange. I suspect that when
they do she will be able to access her information via them.

So what is the smallest practical device that will run F12 ?

How else could one run apps like Evolution and Contact on a small
device ? Could they be made to run on a Symbian device ? What about
Android ?

Thanks

since it provides extensive applications lists, a help to me.

Does anyone have a solution or do I just have to wait 'til it's
fixed? Or do I have something messed up?

   Bob

Cannot open www.netflix.com

2009-12-23 Thread Kaustubh Gadkari
Hi,

I just installed Fedora 12 x86_64. Everything works fine, except that
I cannot access www.netflix.com in any browser (I tried Firefox,
Konqueror and Chrome). I can access the site from Windows, as well as
Ubuntu. Has anyone else faced the same problem?

Thanks,
Kaustubh

Converting and installing Fedora packages on an Ubuntu system will almost
certainly not work, especially if you are trying to install the whole KDE or
something equally complicated.

If you want to move to Fedora, backup your data, reformat the hard drive and
install Fedora *instead* of Ubuntu, not on top of it. Or free up a partition
on the disk, install Fedora there and set up dual-boot. Or install it in a
virtual machine under Ubuntu. Or run it off the Live CD.

But do not mix packages from both distros and install them simultaneously, it
just won't work properly.

AFAIK, the registry is a Windows artifact, no such thing exists in Linux ---
nor Ubuntu nor Fedora.

HTH, :-)

and I think it's not possible remove a working kernel.

Then Fedora12 not have a XEN kernel?
I must build one?

I'm using the proprietary driver on F12 (from RPMFusion) with nouveau
blacklisted according to other posts. I also upgraded to the patched
version of xorg currently on Koji that fixes issues with the proprietary
driver and X.

Everything works much better than with the current nouveau driver. True
3D support is _far_ more important to me (and my kids who plat a lot of
opengl based games - Extreme Tux Racer for example) than having a
Plymouth/kms based bootup. I also need the accelerated graphics to fully
support accelerated graphics with VMware Workstation 7. The proprietary
nVidia drivers support this in Workstation. The nouveau drivers don't.

The graphical startup is certainly nice, but sacrificing hours of
performance issues and enduring the loss of useful and needed function
for a targetd 20 seconds "Plymouth prettiness" just doesn't cut it for
me. I'll live with 20 seconds of the little blue/white bootup lines
instead.

If and when nouveau provides the level of 3D performance and stability
found in the proprietary driver, I will consider making the switch...

Cheers,

Chris

Oh crud. Forgot to mention I'm using Fedora 11 (GREAT SYSTEM BTW).

I'm too scared to upgrade to Fedora 12.

Nouveau in Fedora 12 has support for KMS. It is very the same codebase
that has been merged in 2.6.23 now. The proprietary Nvidia driver
doesn't support KMS. KMS is not just pretty bootup btw. Refer to

Thank Boris for reply, but I want only use "yum install something ...".

I'm not a guru of Linux, I don't want to do "rpmbuild ...;

If for use XEN i must "make something ..." I will continue to use "rpm

Then: It is possible use XEN in Fedora 12 without rebuild some things?

If you are using xen on Fedora see
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/XenPvopsDom0
In particular there are some pre-built kernels at
http://fedorapeople.org/~myoung/dom0/

You do need to edit your boot loader configuration to use the kernels
under xen, you want something along the lines of

title fedora xen (version)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/xen.gz
module /boot/vmlinuz.version standard_kernel_options
module /boot/initrd.version.img

Basically it should probably match your existing entries except for the
additional xen line and kernel/initrd becoming module in the other lines.

Firefox crashes for me too, but only when I close it. I wouldn't even
know it crashed if it were not for abrt. It doesn't crash while I'm
playing something in it. One more thing to try when I have some time is
to replace java-openjdk with sun java and see if it still crashes.

On Tue, 2009-12-22 at 21:21 -0700, Linuxguy123 wrote:

I use the proprietary Nvidia driver on two different workstations under
F12, one at home and one at work, for two different reasons. At home, I
have a MythTV server and my desktop is a front end, so I need VDPAU. I
also have some 3D games, so I need 3D. Neither of those is supported by
nouveau. I have no display-related problems with this machine. I have
another machine that is mostly a server that uses the same relatively
new Dell monitor, and so I just use nouveau on that machine (don't need
3D or VDPAU). It happily does full HD resolution without problems.

At work, I have an old Dell monitor that doesn't do EDID, and I can't
get nouveau to do anything better than 1024x768 on it even if I use
system-config-display to tell it that the monitor is a 1920x1080 flat
panel (which it is). The proprietary driver doesn't do full HD either,
but at least I can get it up to 1280. On this machine, I do get periodic
freezes, where the mouse pointer still moves around the screen, but
clicking or typing have no effect. Only a hard reset/reboot fixes this.
Any mention of this immediately gets fingers pointed at the proprietary
driver, so I am kind of stuck on this one. I just have to get a newer
monitor I guess.

The two machines are both i386 32-bit, but they are not identical. The
work machine is a Core Duo, and the home machine is a dual core
Pentium-4.

So I guess I would say that my results are mixed.

grub configuration, boot.

2009-12-23 Thread Dj YB
hello,

I have been trying to look over many solutions and tutorials with no luck.
my goal was and still is, to clone my internal 40GB hard-drive which contain
fc11 on to my external usb-hard-drive 500GB.
aftar many tutorials I finally used Clonezilla.
that worked great and the hdd is cloned.
the problem is that the boot configurations are the same, and so when I boot
from the usb-hdd I actually run from the internal hdd.
and now for the question.
since this usb-drive is meant to be able to boot on every computer,
I can I config grub to boot (run) the OS in the same drive it is being loaded
from?

for example:
my current setup is that the fc11 internal drive is sdb and the usb-hdd is sde
and the same grub is (clone) on both drives.

any help is very appreciated.
thanks
YB.

Xen uses a special kernel so as far as I know you will first have to remove the
default one with "yum remove kernel". Then try the " yum install xen

There are no instructions for doing this, as far as I can see.
The implication seems to be that the user is running a Fedora CD or DVD,
and then wants to install from hard disk,
which seems bizarre to me.

Mike,

Whether you make the changes in about:config or in the Print -> Options
tab, they're effective immediately. You don't need to click on a
Save/OK/Accept button. Any changes you make are retained in RAM and
aren't written to prefs.js and made permanent until you exit Firefox.

boot screen font size?

2009-12-23 Thread Tom Horsley
With kernel mode setting, my (text mode, rhgb turned off) boot
screen on my HD TV monitor is about 8000 lines by 24 columns
(maybe not quite that many :-) with the font it picks by default
to use with 1920x1280 resolution.

Is there any way to convince it to pick a much much larger font
size during boot?

Thanks Boris, I use F12 on my Laptop and I want run some VM for test new

I run my own local email server, and my email comes directly to it. I

I use the akmods from rpmfusion on 3 systems without issue. Although
KMS is pretty, I get close enough with the vga=0x318 kernel parameter.
No freezing of any sort noticed under Gnome.

Thank Boris for reply, but I want only use "yum install something ...".

I'm not a guru of Linux, I don't want to do "rpmbuild ...;
configure ..., make something ...; ecc..", this is the past.

If for use XEN i must "make something ..." I will continue to use "rpm
-i VMware-server-2.0.2." or another distro that will not need to
build something.

Then: It is possible use XEN in Fedora 12 without rebuild some things?

And, if yes, how to?

Usually delays for list mail are at the ISP level, they've decided that
bulk mail may be spam, and de-prioritised it, or greylisted it, or it's
held back while being checked (and taking far too long doing so).

Nouveau driver will cause X to freeze my system (HP s3707c w/ onboard GeForce

No. I haven't been into my fedora-list profile for a while and it has
always worked before. Besides, not only am I losing some of my own
posts coming back, but I am losing responses to my posts and even one or
two responses to other people's threads.

However, today I have been receiving today's postings today like I
normally do.

It doesn't make sense.

Glad it wasn't just happening to me! BTW, do you get some of the lists

hm, dmg is a container format AFAIK. Maybe there are different types of
content possible and dmgextractor can only handle some of them? Another
tool I've hear about is 'acetoneiso', which is advertised to handle a
lot of different formats.

New plugin for system-config-network for PPTP connections

2009-12-23 Thread Сергей Варюхин
Hi, i create new plugin for system-config-network as my course work in FESU
university. It is plugin for PPTP
connections.
See links to archive and patch for details. Unfortunately, i don't know how
to send patches in initscripts (ifup and ifdown scripts etc.), so can
somebody do it yourself instead me?
I include in message links to .patch-file with my modifications to latest
HEAD of system-config-network and archive file with package snapshot from my
fedora 11 installation. (ifup-pptp and ifdown-pptp scripts can be found in
this archive)
It is strange: i send this patches to maintainer of system-config-network (
har...@redhat.com) one week ago, but still no answer from him. Does anybody
can suggest me, how rightly send patches to upstream of
system-config-network and initscripts?

Worked for me, although was bit of a resource hog. Couldn't even
bookmark the homepage for the project! Had to wait until it was done
writing the iso. Its a very nifty utility and I am pleasantly
surprised after looking for something like this for quite a while.

Well that's not totally true, the data could be in cache (for read) so
with the sync command you are sure that all the bits are written to the
physical device, but when you read the data may comes from the OS cache,
may be that you can do a large copy (eg. copy 10-12Gb of data depending
on your RAM/SWAP configuration) and then make a checksum of the data.
you can umount the device, run fsck on it, reboot, remount the device
and then issue an md5.
If everything is right you should have the same checksum.

I'm still using the proprietary driver because I need full dual-link DVI
support at 2560x1600 resolution. I haven't found a free driver that can
do that.

I do understand how email works and how it is forwarded from site to
site sometimes taking a circuitous route. I am not expecting that it
should follow in exact order.

However, I belong to 11 mailing lists. Granted, none of the others has
as much traffic as the fedora-list but none of them ever get blocked for
two or three days like the fedora-list. And the instances of
blockage/delay with fedora-list seems random. I can go several months
with no problem.

The blockage seems to be at the fedora-list or why else would I receive
a block of 61 posts, some of the posts current and some two or three
days old. It seems that this weekend fedora-list had about 200
messages. I received about 100 in the normal fashion throughout the
weekend (i.e. in batches of 1-7 messages), then a block of 61 and then
later an additional block of 35 late yesterday.

The problem with these delays is not that I have email that is so
important. It is that once I develop a feeling that I cannot trust the
orderly exchange of mail, I find myself continually having to check the
archive to see if my post arrived or if there has been a response.

Also, I don't live in a remote area where I might expect physical
interruptions or primitive service conditions. Gawd knows, I pay enough
monthly to my local IP to expect good service.

I tried that earlier and then the problem self-corrected. I will try
again to trace the delay. Now that I have confirmation this may also be
happening to other people, the effort might be worthwhile.

maybe [1] is the way to go? I stumbled upon it while searching for a way
to 'unzip' firmware updates for this other platform. But I haven't
tested it yet. Feedback is welcome ;).

My point was to run the sync command and then run the checksum before
unmounting This ensures that the data is written to the disk so that
it can be read off the physical device.

Mount of .dmg (mac image) files on Linux Fedora fails

2009-12-23 Thread Mark Ryden
Hello,

Why can't I mount a dmg (macintosh image) file on Fedora 11 ?

I tried mounting several .dmg mac files did not have any success with it.

Here is an example:
I downloaded "Firefox\ 3.5.6.dmg" from
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5.6&os=osx&lang=en-US

running:
file Firefox\ 3.5.6.dmg
gives:
Firefox 3.5.6.dmg: bzip2 compressed data, block size = 900k

Running
mount -t hfs -o loop Firefox\ 3.5.6.dmg /mnt/mac/
and:
mount -t hfsplus -o loop Firefox\ 3.5.6.dmg /mnt/mac/
gives (in both cases)
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so

end in the kernel sys log I see:
can't find a HFS filesystem on dev loop0.
unable to find HFS+ superblock

Any ideas?

Rgs,
Mark

Re: How many people need to use the proprietary nvidia driver ? (Or other non kms driver ?)

2009-12-23 Thread Joonas Sarajärvi
I use whatever Fedora uses when it is run in a Qemu/KVM virtual
machine. If I recall correctly, this driver has not yet gained KVM
capabilities.

I wonder why KMS support has been so slow to appear for the simplest devices.

The umount command does the "sync" so if you run
"umount /media/My_External_HDD" and then you get back to the shell, you
are safe to remove the HDD.
I've experienced file corruption and oddity with reiserfs on a 400Gb
HDD, nothing important was lost, but it was quite annoying.
Which FS are you using on the HDD?

RE: Moving to Fedora .. my GUI gone..

2009-12-23 Thread Ishmael Chibvuri
Hie there

I tried to install KDE (K desktop), removing GNOME desktop and all its
utilities from Linux Ubuntu since I wanted some nice features from
Fedora..

After rebooting.. Only the shell comes up.. the GUI is not starting...

where could I be going wrong.. After converting .rpm files from the fedora
disc to .deb using "alien",I installed all the core KDE files...listed below
:

amarok artscompiz-kde
digikam gpgme im-chooser
caffeinekde-settings-pulseaudio kdeaccessibility
kdeaddons kdeartwork kdebase
kdegraphics kdegraphics-extras kdemultimedia
kdenetwork kdepim kdeutils
kdmthemekftgrabber kipi-plugins
knetworkmanager conversationkpowersave
ktorrentpinentry-qt scim-qt..
scribus xdg-utils xdg-users-dirs
xine-lib-arts zenity

Is there a registry setting somewhere, which needs to be edited, to point to
the new GUI (KDE).

According to the release notes, Fedora *should* run in graphical mode
with 256MB, but is that much really there? That is, is your graphics
card using some of the 256?

If you want to keep that computer, you need more memory.

I use the proprietary nvidia driver with Fedora core 12 KDE. After
installing I experienced desktop freezing when accessing the KDE menu,
which was solved rather quickly by applying the fix of Rex Dieter:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=533620. I had no problems
whatsover with the driver combined with KDE afterwards.
