I also tried to play it in mplayer and use the -cdrom-device option to point it to the iso, but mplayer expects a block device like /dev/cdrom there, not a file. Is there any way I can simulate that the .iso is physically inserted into /dev/cdrom or something? Or do I just burn the thing on a CD and rip it the old-fashioned way? I mean, burning some data off a hard disk onto a CD just so that I could plug it in and copy the data back on the hard disk seems... well... clumsy? Re: Network problems on new FC4 box - please help.
On 02/27/2006 06:48 PM, William W. Austin wrote: I had to replace a disk (the one with all of the home directories on it) on an FC3 box, and so I bought a new drive (particulars unimportant). To make a long story short, I decided to put FC4 on this box, and so I installed the new drive and put the root filesystem on it. I still have the old FC3 root drive and can boot to either for comparison... Under FC3, I have no network problems that I can detect; however, under FC4 there are two distinct (related? no idea) problems which have eluded me. I have tried looking up both of these in the archives, but have had no luck (some similar issues, but nothing exactly like either of these unless I missed them). Problem 1: network card goes to sleep. This machine has 2 network cards, both on-board. The 1GB card L(Intel 82540EM) goes to the smartswitch to tolk to the local network, and does not show any problems. The other card (nVidia nForce2) is a 100MB card and talks to the DSL modem. Periodically I cannot connect to the internet at all - or even ping the DSL modem. This happens irregularly but about 5-10 times/day. If I reboot back to FC3, the problem does not occur. Network configurations between the two (FC3/FC4) are as identical as I can make them. The first few times the problem occurs, sometimes retarting networking works, but eventually a full sys reboot is the only thing which works. Problem 2: slow local network. Under FC3 throughput on the LOCAL network (1GB lan) is very fast. Under FC4, the best I have seen is ONE transfer of about 1.2 MB/s - and throughput drops to as low as 50-75KB/s at times. Again, this does not occur under FC3 but does under FC4. Again the same setup as nearly as I can make it. No workaround found so far. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It could be caused by the laptop running at a higher performance level when on AC power, which causes the problem to manifest. Have you tried running memtest while on AC power? First, that's a bizarre thought, but you certainly could be right. My thoughts, also unlikely: - attach the power connection before powering on (connection glitch issue) - attach charger and fully charge before powering on (Battery fully charged pop-up issue) - repeat the test in 32 bit (Live-CD, not reinstall) I'm happy to offer thoughts, but happier that I don't have the problem. Flash works like a charm on all my 64-bit systems; and what is that other software are you referring to? 64-bit Linux has also 32-bit libs if needed. Ok , I have find this [a] by googling [a] --- For 64-bit Ubuntu, finding the proper 32-bit support packages is a simple matter of opening up the Synaptic Package Manager, and searching for the string “ia32”. With 64-bit openSuSE, 32-bit support is already built-in, so you don’t have to do anything. With Fedora, though, it’s a whole different story. Not only are the 32-bit packages not already installed, the Fedora folk don’t provide any documentation on how to install them. The directions I found via Google were outdated, and wouldn’t work. I finally resolved the problem by asking a Red Hat employee in my local Linux Users Group. *Add an “rpm” Macro* This isn’t an absolute necessity, but it’s handy. Add the following line to the “/etc/rpm/macros” file: %_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch} Now, when you query for information about rpm packages, you’ll be able to see whether they’re 32-bit or 64-bit packages. sudo rpm -q SDL SDL-1.2.13-9.fc11.x86_64 *Add the Libraries* Next, add the 32-bit libraries by copying the following list, and pasting it into a text file. Save it as “Fedora-ia32.txt”. arts.i586 audiofile.i586 bzip2-libs.i586 cairo.i586 compat-expat1-1.95.8-4.i586 compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-63.i586 compiz.i586 cyrus-sasl-lib.i586 dbus-libs.i586 directfb.i586 esound-libs.i586 fltk.i586 freeglut.i586 gphoto2.i586 gtk2.i586 hal-libs.i586 imlib.i586 jack-audio-connection-kit.1.i586 java.i586 lcms-libs.i586 lesstif.i586 libacl.i586 libaio-0.3.106-4.2.i586 libao.i586 libattr.i586 libcap.i586 libdrm.i586 libexif.i586 libgcrypt-1.4.0-3.i586 libgnomecanvas.i586 libICE.i586 libieee1284.i586 libsigc++20.i586 libSM.i586 libtool-ltdl.i586 libusb.i586 libwmf.i586 libwmf-lite.i586 libX11.i586 libXau.i586 libXaw.i586 libXcomposite.i586 libXdamage.i586 libXdmcp.i586 libXext.i586 libXfixes.i586 libxkbfile.i586 libxml2.i586 libXmu.i586 libXp.i586 libXpm.i586 libXScrnSaver.i586 libxslt.i586 libXt.i586 libXTrap.i586 libXtst.i586 libXv.i586 libXxf86vm.i586 lzo.i586 mesa-libGL.i586 mesa-libGLU.i586 nas-libs.i586 nss_ldap.i586 opencdk.i586 openldap.i586 pam.i586 popt.i586 pulseaudio-libs.i586 sane-backends-libs-gphoto2.i586 sane-backends-libs.i586 SDL.i586 svgalib.i586 unixODBC.i586 zlib.i586 Finally, “su” to a root shell, and run the following command: # for i in $( Fedora-ia32.txt ); do yum -y install $i; done When the process completes, you can verify that you have both 32-bit and 64-bit packages installed. sudo rpm -q SDL SDL-1.2.13-9.fc11.x86_64 SDL-1.2.13-9.fc11.i586 *A Caveat* By having to use the entire package name, all the way up through the arch designation, we open ourselves up to a slight problem. That is, package version numbers are also part of the package names. So, by the time you read this, the script may have been partially broken due to Fedora packages having been updated to newer versions. Here’s the way around that. Go ahead and do the procedure as written. Then, as root, run the following command: for i in $( Fedora-ia32.txt ); do rpm -q rpm_results.txt $i; done If package versions have changed, you’ll see a “not installed” error message for it in the output file. Then, you can open Yum Extender, and search for the update version to install. *Conclusion* The reason that the directions that I found via Google didn’t work, is that the package list referenced the “i386” packages that were part of Fedora 10. With Fedora 11, the “i386” packages have been replaced by “i586” packages -- °v° /(_)\ ^ ^ Jatin Khatri No MS -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

Is there some URL I could visit that qualifies this? I'm not doubting you, but I would like to have a mental model of roughly why and how 64-bit mode benefits a system. If you have 1G (or really a little less) of physical RAM on 32-bit x86, the kernel can map all of it into the kernel's virtual address space. Otherwise, it has to use different addressing to access physical addresses, IIRC mapping them on demand (which adds overhead). On a 64-bit system, all of physical memory can be mapped into the kernel address space at all times. Also, x86_64 has a larger CPU register set, which can speed up some operations. So according to you one must go for 64bit if the hardware is capable for it is it -- °v° /(_)\ ^ ^ Jatin Khatri No MS -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

(If so, thank-you – but I’m not sure why it was necessary.) james, this is not to insult or hurt your feelings, but, from what you have posted, you do not know much about batteries. especially when it comes to cycling, ie, charging and discharging. presuming that you battery is lithium-ion, you will not have 'memory' problems that ni-cad batteries have. but, you will have heat problems. it is for that reason that you should not have a battery, of either type on charge for a long time and then remove for a short time of discharge and then recharge again unless it has drop in level an appreciative amount. well designed chargers have circuitry to not apply a high charge rate until voltage level is below a predetermined amount, along with circuitry to monitor temperature and control high charge rate. cheap charges do not. in brief, ni-cad cells discharge with a tapered level over time then drop below usable level. lithium-ion maintain a level over time, then drop sharply. Or did you feel that there was some mis-information being given out? snip And few readers will have the time to follow every helpful link. information given to you by others has not been 'mis-information', but some of it could have been more complete to give you a better understanding. if one does not care to take time to become more informed, one must be ready to accept consequences. in this case, shortened battery pack life. So could you elucidate further? if jatin does not 'elucidate', i would not blame him. why should he write something that he has given you a link to read to find out what you need to know? long story to short, rtfm. or in this case rtfl. please forgive me if I've hurt someone's feelings by posting the link here or I have done any mistake -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

This functionality of having an image for each desktop from KDE 3.x is the only thing that I (really!!!) miss in KDE 4.x. I really do think that KDE 4 is now much superiour to KDE 3 excepting the (perhaps minor issue for the KDE devs) of having multiple desktop images to match the prefered use/purpose for that desktop. No other element in KDE 4 makes me wish to regress back to the previous system (except the use of kyum which upon installation pulls in many elements from KDE 3...) Has kyum been ported to KDE 4? (2) Installing kyum for upgrading my current Fedora installation without pulling in many elements/libraries of KDE3 to support this application. I know that I should post this to the KDE.org/brainstorm link you had posted previously...but I feel that if this is a majour issue then many must have already complained before now so if no-one has said much then these are not majour issues to the general KDE community... Thanks, John which version of t-b you are having ? -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines
Re: help

It detects the Internet connection and says it is established but firefox will not connect neither will the system update. Is there something I need to do in the terminal to make it go online. I have a dsl connection. I had to revert back to ubuntu to get online. Any help would be appreciated. This sounds like a dns problem. Right-click on the network icon in your system tray, and choose Edit Connection. You should then see your connection, probably (but not necessarily) as eth0. Highlight it and choose Edit. On the IPV4 tab you need an entry. In most cases you can simply give it the address of your adsl router or modem - often 192.168.1.1. What that does is tell your application to go through the router or modem and ask your ISP to resolve the addresses you give it. Although all this seems sensible to me, I am a bit surprised none of you gurus has suggested using ping. I would start by pinging my ISP, if possible using the IP address. To me, the first question would be, Are my packets leaving the house? If I determined that they were, I would think to myself, So it's a pretty simple issue then, probably something to do with DNS, or maybe DHCP. If I found the packets were not leaving my house, I would be much less sanguine. I already asked about resolve.conf . but did not get reply :-( -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

Re: Audacious play/stop/pause continuously while playing mp3 files...

Anyone have the same problem? Audacios have this behavior for one or another mp3, not always with every mp3 file un playlist. Greetings ya I'm facing the same problem... but I've got the solution, it is like this process suppose you have loaded 10 mp3 files in Audacios ... double click on each and every song and play it for some second, then lat it play the songs turn by turn .. that problem will be solved for that 10 mp3/ogg files untill you exit the player That doesn't make any sense. It's some randomly picked actions that may influence your system somehow, but it isn't a recipe that could be explained with a rationale. Even if you double-click each and every song and play it for some second, Audacious doesn't remember anything about that when you let it process the playlist automatically. Can the original problem be describe more accurately? What does it play/stop/pause continously mean exactly? Does it refer to audio playback with interruptions? Or do you need to take action and restart playback with the play button? [...] For some users, Fedora 11 still suffers from a variety of audio related problems in the ALSA kernel drivers and in Pulse Audio. I've had Audacious lock up hard until the kernel-2.6.29.6-213.fc11 update fixed that. Other users still see several different warnings from pulseaudio in their messages log about problems with the ALSA driver. When using different audio players. Currently, I even keep pulseaudio running since the first 2.6.29.6 kernel update, and it doesn't cause as many problems as before. A few remaining messages indicate that their are problems left, however, such as: Aug 11 12:10:51 faldor pulseaudio[2389]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write! Aug 11 12:10:51 faldor pulseaudio[2389]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_ens1371'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers. Aug 11 12:10:51 faldor pulseaudio[2389]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value min_avail. I mean to say If I load 10 files in audacious ... after some time ( randomly ) audio goes away... some time I get cracked sound or hissing sound if I play all that 10 songs for a second turn by turn problem goes away ( untill i exit the player ) say if again you load 20 songs in it go through the above process everything will be fine otherwise ... cracked sound hissing sound ..
