Not that I know of since Conky basically runs off the desktop. I have
Conky running from a custom ~/.conkyrc file on the desktop and use the
'Workspace Switcher' applet to view it (Note that the 'Show Desktop'
applet won't work as it minimizes the conky display as well), you can
have a look at this thread from Ubuntu Forums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281865&highlight=.conkyrc

Has a number of .conkyrc files for customized Conky's, you may find
one to suit your needs. My current ~/.conkyrc is a modified one from
that thread.

Other options are:

- You can add h/w monitoring applets to your panel(s) [Image 1].

Conky is highly customisable as well, in addition to using less PC resources:

xsane can do this- you have to start (create) a multi-page project
(it's there in the menus somewhere). After you are finished scanning
all the pages (it will save all the individual images in a
'multipageproject' folder in your ~/Documents (default)), there is
then an option to combine all of them into a PDF.

An alternate is 'pdfsam'.

Jay

PS:
I have found gscan2pdf the easiest & fastest method, and haven't seen
any kind of tint/other artefact. Maybe your sacnner needs to be
re-calibrated or you may have chosen non-default options in
colour/brightness/contrast tabs.

Also, what's the fastest way (http / ftp) to download the DVD ISO from
the mirrors; I am on a cable connection @ 256 kbps (not particularly
fast, would take about 30 + hours at that speed to get the full 4 GB

What is the mail list where Fedora Project new release announcements
are made; also for GNOME & KDE releases for Fedora ?

I am presently subscribed only to the main Fedora list (i.e. this one:
fedora-list@redhat.com), and woefully out of date on new release info.

As an extension of this: is it possible to upgrade a Fedora 10 install to
Fedora 11, by using the Fedora 11 DVD as a local repository ? This would
save me (and also lot of other people who do not have fast Internet
connections and/or with time-capped Internet subscriptions), a lot of
bandwidth and time (and $$).

(As a 'by the by', I also prefer the Fedora 10 theme & artwork ('Solar'
theme) over Fedora 11's).

Thanks for the reply.

Are they to be copied from /var/cache/yum to the dir that is to be used as
local repo ? On my PC (this is a non-networked desktop PC), this directory
has:
/fedora/packages/ & /updates/packages - both newly-created after I started
the Update applet.

I Googled for this for Fedora Linux, but mostly the results refer to
networked PC's.

Local cache / 'repo' of updates and added RPM's

2009-08-14 Thread Jay Mistry
I had to re-install Fedora 10 on a home desktop PC. In regard to this:

Is it possible to have a local cache/ "repository" of all
1) Updates (Critical, Security, Bug-fixes), and
2) Additional installed rpm's (that were installed through PackageKit), e.g.
Opera, Adobe Reader, etc.
so that I do not have to download all those again (800 MB + D/L)

This would be similar to the 'aptonCD' package in Ubuntu (
http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/)

APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one

I am not that technically proficient. The ext4 is for Ubuntu 9.04; Fedora 10
has ext3 and used to give console error messages about being unable to
umount the ext4 partitions during shutdown. I had to do a reset as the PC
stalled at that point.

Presently, I have added the 'noauto' option to Fedora 10's fstab file so
that the ext4 partitions are not mounted. This stopped the error messages
and enabled proper shutdown.

That would be the opposite of what I want to do. I have ext4 partitions
(with data) that I would like to permanently convert to ext3 (without data
loss), such as can be done from FAT32 to NTFS.

Access to ext4 & FAT32 partitions (Fedora 10)

On a new install of Fedora 10 on a home desktop PC, how can one enable
access to Windows XP (FAT32) and Ubuntu (ext4) partitions from within
Fedora (using GNOME 2.24 desktop)?
The Linux installs (Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 9.04, both i386) are on a
separate HD than Windows, and I boot into them from the NT bootloader.

I was able to access (mount) the NTFS partitions of Windows XP after
installing ntfs-3g and ntfs-config.

For a home PC Clonezilla Live CD (http://www.clonezilla.org/) can be
used; there are options to backup MBR for an active/boot partition,
which I think is saved as a separate file in the saved image

This error was on running Smolt on openSUSE 11.1. Prior to using KDE
4.2, there was no problem in Smolt sending the data to the Smolt
server. However, after recent updates (to KDE 4.2.1 and Linux Kernel
update), I have been getting this error. The Smolt GUI also freezes
when I try to send the h/w info thro' GUI.

Since it is on openSUSE 11.1 that I am getting the error (have not yet
tried running Smolt on Fedora 10), will it be more appropriate to post
it to Novell Bugzilla?

Is there a place to file Bugzilla for the above, if needed ?

ntfs-config may help.

They also have a "Linux Starter pack" (Beginner's guide to setting-up

http://www.tuxradar.com/linuxstarterpack, at the companion website
http://www.tuxradar.com/. That one does not have a d/l time limit.

Partition imaging program(s), for Linux (ext3 FS)

2009-03-03 Thread Jay Mistry
I am an old Norton Ghost 2003 user & use a NG 2003 DOS Boot CD to
backup & restore NTFS <--> partitions on Windows system (dual-boot
Linux & Windows XP Prof).

I have not used Ghost for ext3 partition image backup, though have
been using it regularly for NTFS --> NTFS (Windows) partition backup,
with good results.

For Linux, I have tried partimage, but that will not image an ext3 -->
NTFS partition (it can save the ext3 partn. image to NTFS partition, but
from some posts at the partimage Forums, it seems there are problems
in restoring the image to ext3, if the image is saved to an NTFS
partition).

Are there any other programs (other than Norton Ghost & partimage)
that can image a Linux partition to NTFS) _and restore_ from image
properly ? Most of the free space on my HD's is on NTFS partitions.

Thanks,

Jay

Thank you, all for your answers.

I was looking for the Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) for Linux.
Their website is difficult to navigate, especially for a newbie
single-user, and I don't think it would be worth the while putting in
a 'Call Request' for my needs (single-PC, home user, student) ) - I
dual-boot Win XP Prof with openSUSE 11.1 on my home PC; a few months
ago it was only Win XP Prof. After installing Linux, I find I am using
Linux much more than Windows, for a variety of reasons that can be
found at most sites espousing GNU/Linux, and am keen to learn Linux
and Programming Languages (later), (I have a medical background).

SAS was the default software provided by the Dept/School IT Dept
(volume-licensed to the School of Public Health) to Graduate students
in the MPH (Master's in Public Health program...will not mention which
School/Univ), where I was enrolled till a few months back- but had to
withdraw mid-way due to health and domestic reasons. In the meantime
(and even while in the MPH program), I was interested in appearing for
the SAS/BASE Exam as a Professional Certification. Now, as I have some
free time, I thought I might sit for the Exam and thought of
installing SAS on oS 11.1 Linux; hence the question (also it would
have *wowed* some of my Professors then, looking at the Platform -not
being Windows XP, but on "Kernel Linux 2.6.27.7-9-pae" (I suppose that
is what it would say in 'proc contents' - students needed to submit a
copy of the SAS Program syntax with their Computer Homework). As such,
quite a few MPH students found it difficult initially to install/
configure SAS on even their _Windows_ PC's (laptops) - none had Linux
and there was no Linux version of SAS 9.1.3 available at the Computer
Labs, AFAIK.

Well, I guess the bottom-line is that SAS can't (for all practical
purposes for a home user like me, who can't shell out the $$$), be
installed on Linux oS 11.1 at the moment. Besides, officially at
least, oS 11.1 is not supported. So, if I need to practice for the
SAS/ BASE Exam, it will have to be on Windows.

Would like to explore the FOSS alternatives, particularly 'R' (though
I think they R lacks the fancy add-ons such as ODS that SAS has; and
has a steeper learning curve). As I recall there was a Course in
Statistics where the Professor used 'R' entirely, instead of the
default SAS.

Looking at KDE 4.2, which seems to have sacrificed functionality for
good looks & an enhanced (but difficult to navigate & configure
interface), it seems a part of Linux seems to be moving the Windows
way (re: Vista's complex operation, non-intuitive functions & the
'aero' interface) ... choice in Linux seems to be going the Redmond
way (probably an overstatement, but now may be a good time for a
check).

Hope the next OO.org will not present us a telly-tubby look with a 'ribbon'.

As a slight , Fedora (in addition to the hat-connection), is
also the name of a Billy Wilder-directed film, loosely based on the
life of enigmatic Swedish-born, American actress, Greta Garbo
(http://www.garboforever.com/Unrealized-10.htm#Fedora).

There may be a point there, considering that Fedora 10 will not have
KDE 3.5.x and the instability of KDE 4.2 (most related to
plasmoid/plasma component). Many users of KDE would like to work with
KDE 3.5.x, until the 4.2 release becomes more stable/mature.

Currently I use KDE 3.5 in openSUSE 11.1. I wanted to try out Fedora
10 (to add on to oS 11.1), but am not sure whether to proceed, as the
KDE 4.2 (new install/upgrade) crashed in openSUSE 11.1. Nearly as soon
as I logged in, there was an error msg saying 'The Plasma Desktop has
crashed' and all desktop icons disappeared & on trying to Login with
KDE 4.2, there is an Error Message 'Could not start kdeinit4. Check
your installation'.

openSUSE has other Desktops that can also be installed & so I am
presently using GNOME and KDE 3.5 in oS 11.1.

Hi,

I have downloaded the nVidia drivers (as a file with the .run extension,
i.e. *NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg1.run*, from
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.14.12.html) and have put
them on a CD. I can put them on an ext3 partition that I use as 'Data
Storage' (done from the Parted Magic 3 Live Bootable CD, that has gparted
also) or can also put them on a USB Disk.

How to proceed after that ? (I guess it will involve typing some commands
from RL 3; but am *unsure of the exact cmds to type & how to proceed
thereafter*. (I can get to the grub boot menu, but after that it's a
no-show).

Thanks,

Jay

Fedora 9 install method, when Graphics Card / LCD not detected

2008-08-21 Thread Jay Mistry
Is there a method to install FC 9 when the Graphics Card (nVidia 8400 GS)
&/or LCD Monitor (17" LG 177WSB, with native res of 1440 X 900) is not
supported?
After installing from the i386 DVD, I get a blank screen & don't know how to
proceed (am *new to Linux & FC9*).

Mainboard is the Gigabyte GA-73VM-S2 (with nVidia 610i chipset), if this
helps.

FC9 install, (?) Mainboard & Graphics Card Driver problem

2008-08-14 Thread Jay Mistry
I am having a problem with FC 9 *(Fedora Core 9)* install.

*For FC9 install*:

Tried the install method described in this
thread
& # 6 :
Windows & FC9 Linux on separate partitions, with option to choose which OS
to boot through the BIOS).* [To do this, I disconnected the Windows HD (as
there are 2 Hard Disks: 250 GB IDE with Win XP Pro & 500 GB SATA on first
partition of which I installed Linux, after disconnecting the 250 GB IDE
(Windows) drive) ].*
The FC9 install (done with a boot FC9 DVD) itself went smoothly. After
re-booting, I got the Fedora OS selector screen and booted into that, but
then there was a *display problem* (use a 17" LG Flatron L177WSB Monitor)
and the screen went blank with Error Message (provided by LCD firmware)
stating: 'Refresh rate out of range" with a Vertical Refresh Rate displayed
of 77.5 MHz). So, I re-booted, went into BIOS and chose the on-board VGA as
the graphics display.
But got the same Error Message ("Out of range" or something similar) with
the on-board display selected.

*(System Hardware Specs are at the end of this post).*

What could be wrong? I think Fedora 9 may not have got the drivers
on-board/during install for the Graphics Card or the Motherboard/On-board
VGA. How can one troubleshoot this? Don't know which drivers to get & how to
install them, as Fedora simply won't boot up & there is no Internet
connection available in Linux.

Is there a way to *install the drivers after writing them to CD* (this
is*best option
* for me as I have a working net connection in Windows & can d/l & burn the
drivers to CD from there). If yes, what drivers to get & how to install from
CD?
