readonly copy of fedora-advisory-board list

2006-06-08 Thread Max Spevack
Just wanted to let you all know that I've got a readonly copy of the
fedora-advisory-board mailing list setup.

fedora-advisory-board is the list on which the Fedora Board conducts its
business, and its membership is comprised of the Fedora Board members, and
many of the folks on different Fedora Steering Committees, leaders within
the community and within Red Hat.

Many people have said that they appreciate the transparency into the work
of the Board, but that it would be far easier to get that transparency if
there was a readonly copy of the list to which they could subscribe.

the push toward fc6

2006-06-13 Thread Max Spevack

My fellow Fedora-ites,

Many of you have probably seen this, but for those who haven't, I would
like to point your attention to an op-ed piece that was recently posted on
distrowatch:

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20060612#opinion

The author looks at the most recent releases of Ubuntu, SuSe, and Fedora,
and concludes that fc5 is possibly one of the most stable and dependable
Linux distributions ever built.

This is tremendous praise, and I hope that everyone who contributes to
Fedora -- whether you contribute code to Core or Extras, documentation,
testing, design skills, web work, translation, or something else -- feels
a strong sense of pride from this, since it is the combined efforts of the
Fedora community that has gotten us to where we are.

Everywhere I go, people who find out that I work on Fedora compliment me
on fc5. I hear over and over again that it's the best yet, that things
just work and that it's powerful and slick. The credit for all of this
belongs to the developers, release engineers, and testers who put in
countless hours to get us there. Thank you.

We have a devel freeze for fc6-test1 tomorrow, and a scheduled release of
fc6-test1 next Wednesday.

So I'd like to thank all of the people who have been working hard on
getting things ready, and I'd like to urge everyone to put in the testing
effort that we need to make sure that fc6 lives up to the same standard
that we created for fc5.

Will Woods is our Fedora Test Lead, and fc6 is going to be the first
release that he works on. Please offer him your help, your time, and your
talent.

We will continue to make our mark by being the most innovative and highest
quality distribution. Let the other folks talk about it -- meanwhile,
we'll just keep making it happen.

You are Fedora.

CREATIVE COMMONS ANNOUNCES OPEN VIDEO CONTEST WITH THE FEDORA PROJECT

2006-06-21 Thread Alex Maier

CREATIVE COMMONS ANNOUNCES OPEN VIDEO CONTEST WITH THE FEDORA PROJECT

San Francisco, USA - June 20, 2006

Creative Commons and the Fedora Project are pleased to announce the
Open Video Contest taking place now. The contest promotes flexible
copyright, open media formats and the Fedora Project.

Entries must be 30 seconds or less, in OGG Theora format, promote
freedom and openness, and be released under the Creative Commons
Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license.

Visit http://creativecommons.org/video/openvideocontest/ before July
20, 2006 to enter.

The contest will be judged by representatives of the Fedora Project
and Red Hat, Creative Commons jurisdiction leads from Brazil,
Nigeria, and Poland, and a representative of the Wikimedia Foundation
Special Projects Committee.

This contest spreads the message that a combination of open
licensing, open formats and open source software gives creators,
consumers, and developers infinite freedom says Alex Maier, Chair of
Fedora Ambassadors Steering Committee.

About OGG Theora
Theora is an open, royalty-free video codec developed by the Xiph.org
Foundation as part of the Ogg multimedia framework. Theora is
released to the public under a BSD-style open source software
license, completely free for commercial or noncommercial use. For
more information about Theora visit http://theora.org.

About the Fedora Project
The Fedora Project is a Red Hat-sponsored and community-supported
open source project. The goal? Work with the Linux community to build
a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free
software. Public forum. Rapid progress. Open process. A proving
ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red
Hat products. Fedora Core is an operating system and platform, based
on Linux, that is always free for anyone to use, modify and
distribute, now and forever. It is developed by a large community of
people who strive to provide and maintain the very best in free, open
source software and standards.

About Creative Commons
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that promotes the
creative re-use of intellectual and artistic works – whether owned or
in the public domain. Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible
range of protections and freedoms that build upon the all rights
reserved concept of traditional copyright to offer a voluntary some
rights reserved approach. Creative Commons is sustained by the
generous support of various foundations including the John D. and
Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Omidyar Network Fund, the
Hewlett Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation, as well as
members of the public. For more information about Creative Commons,

Introducing Fedora Women

2006-07-17 Thread Patrick W. Barnes
In an effort to support the women who use and develop Fedora, the Fedora Women
program was launched last week. This new program provides a forum for
communication between the women of Fedora, and it will eventually offer
additional support to the women that help make Fedora what it is.

The fedora-women-list mailing list is now available.

The #fedora-women IRC channel on freenode is available for live chat.

Full details about the program can be found on the Fedora Women project page.

FC6 Test2 Freeze Slip

2006-07-18 Thread Jeremy Katz
With the update to a 2.6.18-rc based kernel, Xen requires some more
effort to get to working. Given that Xen is one of the big features for
Fedora Core 6, trying to ship the second test release (and thus the
feature freeze) without Xen seems like a less than ideal situation.

Therefore, after discussion within the Fedora Board, we have decided to
slip the freeze for test2 until Xen is working again with current
kernels. Based on current estimates, it looks like this should
hopefully be Monday, 24 July. We'll continue to provide updates as more
information is available.

A hardware failure was the cause of the problem. We have restored the site
from a recent backup and services should now be returning to normal. Since
we were forced to use a backup, some of the most recent changes may have been
lost. If you made any changes over the last 24-48 hours, you may need to

What's been up to FedoraNEWS.ORG?

2006-08-25 Thread Thomas Chung
As we have reached our 60th Issue[1] of Fedora Weekly News, I thought it would
be a good
time to look back what's been up to FedoraNEWS.ORG for next few month.

Looking back, it's been quite a journey for FedoraNEWS.ORG when it was first
launched on
2003-11-09[2]. It started as my personal web site where I publish notes I took
as I
explore Fedora Core 1. Since then, the site has changed its face a few times
from HTML
to WordPress then WikiMedia and now Drupal. Our weekly newsletter Fedora Weekly
News is
now being translated in 8 different languages including English, French, German,
Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Korean, Serbian and we're even offering Podcast in
English
and French!

What a remarkable accomplishment you might say. To tell you the truth, there
were times
when I wake up middle of the night to start the article and finish it well
after 4 in
the morning and asking myself why am I doing this? Does this ever end? When
will be a
good time to take a break? A perfect time has come.

Beginning Monday August 28th until Sunday October 1st, FedoraNEWS.ORG will be
taking a
long vacation. It's time for us (me and my wife) to give full attention to our
unborn
baby and soon-to-be new member of Fedora Community. :)

Fedora Core Live Spins Released!

2006-08-28 Thread Robert 'Bob' Jensen

Fedora Unity releases Fedora Core 5 Live-Spin ISO images.

Official Fedora Live images are something we all have been looking
forward to seeing in the Fedora Community. Kadischi will be the tool to
create such live images. Fedora Unity has recently joined forces with
Kadischi to help provide testing and to release live images which we are
calling Live-Spins.

The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of a new
Live-Spin CD and DVD ISO image of Fedora Core 5. These Live-Spin ISOs
are based on Fedora Core 5 and all updates released as of August 21st,
2006. They are available for the i386 architecture via BitTorrent
starting Monday, August 28th, 2006 via BitTorrent.

The Fedora Core 5 CD image features a 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5 kernel and GNOME
2.14.1, along with applications such as xchat, gftp, OpenOffice.org
2.0.3, and other utilities. The DVD image includes roughly everything
but the kitchen sink.

Also available at this time are pristine FC6T2 Live ISO images from
the initial FC6T2 release.

The Fedora Unity Project was created by concerned peers in the Fedora
Community to bring quality solutions to the Community. Project members
want to see the best solutions find their way into the hands of the
Community. Members include site maintainers, Fedora Project contributors
and interested users.

Fedora Unity has taken up the Live-Spin task to provide the Community
with the chance to test Fedora Core with recent updates in a Live Media
environment. This is a Community project, for the Community and by the
Community. You can contribute to the Community by seeding the torrent
after your download has completed or by joining the test process.

The Fedora Unity Project intends to release early and release often. New
Live-Spins are provided early each month during the life of each Fedora
Core release until that release is transferred to Fedora Legacy. Early
snapshots are taken mid-month to start testing. Final snapshots will be
taken about a week before the release. All released ISO images are
tested to ensure the quality that the Fedora community expects. If you
are interested in helping with the testing or seeding efforts, please
contact the Fedora Unity team. Contact information is available at
http://fedoraunity.org/.

Go to http://torrent.fedoraunity.org/ to join the torrent!

Release Notes freeze for FC6

2006-09-25 Thread Paul W. Frields
Release notes will be frozen on the wiki for translation this Saturday,
23 September 2006. Any content not updated there will not be
translated, and will not be in the FC6 final ISO spin. Please make your
updates by Friday 22 September 2006 at 2359 UTC to ensure they are
available to FC6 users.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Schedule

Content will be unfrozen following the XML conversion and release to the
Translation Project. At that time, you may again make changes to the
wiki, but these changes will *NOT* be in the ISO or FC6 final release.
They will be published on the Web as an errata release. This Web page
is linked prominently from the top of the Release Notes included in the
FC6 ISO spin.

Another slip in the FC6 schedule

2006-10-16 Thread Jesse Keating
Over the weekend we ran into a few more bugs with Fedora Core 6 that we
decided were important enough to fix. There were some multilib compose
issues (wrong packages landing in the wrong dirs), some translation files
that would cause tracebacks in things like anaconda (whoops), and a
fedora-release package that forgot to enable updates (double whoops). For
these reasons and a few others, we decided to respin the release candidate
tree and push the release date out another couple of days.

The current plan is to spin a release candidate this evening with some last
minute fixes, and start the sync. Validation has gone very well up to this
point and baring any blow ups in the spin process, the release looks very
solid. We're planning to release on Thursday Oct 19th. This should give the
mirrors enough days to sync up. If things blow up horribly and we have to
spin again tomorrow, depending on what time we have to respin we may slip
until next week, as releasing on Fridays or Mondays gets you the wrath of the
mirror admins (:

I want to thank you all for playing along and helping us to make FC6 the best
release yet!

Announcing Fedora Core 6 (Zod)

2006-10-24 Thread Fedora Project
This is the announcement of Zod. Zod permits you to call him Fedora Core
6.

Tremble, Earthlings, for Zod is released from the confines of testing. Zod
intends to hammer the servers of the world ... starting TODAY! For those
who chose the world-domination-acceptance package in your last
installation, you need do nothing -- Zod is beaming itself to your
computers already. If your keyboard begins to get hot, back away ... very
... slowly ...

For the rest of you minions who failed to do Zod's bidding previously,
this is your ONE AND ONLY CHANCE to redeem yourself. Go quickly! Download
the torrent NOW. Obtain the ISO immediately. Zod's minions know to back up
their /home directory and to begin immediate installation of the GREATEST
version of Fedora Core EVER.

When you are done genuflecting, listen carefully. Zod now delivers an
important message to Zod's predecessor, the Fifth Iteration of Fedora
Core, known to some as Bordeaux:

KNEEL BEFORE ZOD, for Zod has many improvements that convince users to
upgrade and abandon you! Ph34r me! Mwahahahaha.

Zod accepts that the Fedora Project continues to provide software and
security updates for Bordeaux, as per the policy of Zod's minions. Zod
chooses to permit this action to continue.

Those who would understand Zod must begin here:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FC6ReleaseSummary
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/

Massive downloading of Zod is known to melt servers worldwide, so Zod
commands all who are able to use bittorrent.

Fedora Core 6 (Zod) Live-Spins Released

2006-10-24 Thread Robert 'Bob' Jensen

Fedora Unity releases Fedora Core 6 (Zod) Live-Spin ISO images.

Official Fedora Live CD/DVD images are something many have been looking
forward to seeing from the Fedora community. Fedora Unity has joined
forces with the Kadischi development team to test and release live
images, called Live-Spins.

The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the initial release of
several Fedora Core 6 Live-Spin CD and DVD ISO images. These Live-Spins
are based on the 24 October initial release of Fedora Core 6. They are
available for the i386 and x86_64 architectures via BitTorrent immediately.

A Live-Spin CD or DVD provides a reasonably useful web
browser/email/OpenOffice access, said Jef Spaleta, long time Fedora
community member. It should be a good quick peek at what the FC6
desktops feel like ... without having to do a full install. He added,
9 out of 10 voices in my head agree: 'Unity's Live-Spin CD is a pretty
good starting point for future live CD development.'

Fedora Core 6 GNOME Live-Spin CD images (i386 and x86_64) include:
2.6.18-1.2798_FC6 kernel
GNOME 2.16.0
Nautilus CD Burner 2.16.0
Firefox 1.5.0.7
Thunderbird 1.5.0.7
X-Chat 2.6.6
OpenOffice 2.0.4
Evolution 2.8.0
and various other desktop applications.

The Fedora Core 6 KDE Live-Spin CD (i386 only) image includes:
2.6.18-1.2798_FC6 kernel
KDE 3.5.4
K3B 0.12.15
Firefox 1.5.0.7
Thunderbird 1.5.0.7
X-Chat 2.6.6
OpenOffice 2.0.4
Evolution 2.8.0
and various other desktop applications.

The Fedora Core 6 Server Live-Spin CD (i386 and x86_64) images include:
2.6.18-1.2798_FC6 kernel
Apache 2.2.3
MySql 5.0.22
PHP 5.1.6
Python 2.4.3
and various other server admin utilities.

The DVD images (i386 and x86_64) include:
Everything for a desktop that you might want to see from under the
Fedora umbrella for the same low price. It has been said in the past
that Fedora Unity's Live-Spin DVD included everything but the kitchen
sink. The only reason the kitchen sink is not included is that it has
not yet been packaged for Fedora Extras. Nearly all the GNOME apps,
nearly all the KDE apps, XFCE4, and a whole load of packages for the
desktop from Fedora Extras. This ISO even includes the long wanted NTFS
support by including the ntfs-3g package that is now in Extras. Because
of the size of this LiveDVD you may need more than 512 MiB of RAM for it
to run effectively.

About The Fedora Unity Project:

with the chance to test and experience Fedora Core in a live media

community. You can contribute to the community by seeding the torrent
after your download has completed or by joining the test process.

The Fedora Unity Project intends to release early and release often. We

Cooperative Bug Isolation for FC6

2006-10-30 Thread Ben Liblit
The Cooperative Bug Isolation Project (CBI) is now available for Fedora
Core 6. CBI (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/) is an ongoing research effort
to find and fix bugs in the real world. We distribute specially
modified versions of popular open source software packages. These
special versions monitor their own behavior while they run, and report
back how they work (or how they fail to work) in the hands of real users
like you. Even if you’ve never written a line of code in your life, you
can help make things better for everyone simply by using our special
bug-hunting packages.

We currently offer instrumented versions of Evolution, Gaim, The GIMP,
GNOME Panel, Gnumeric, Nautilus, Rhythmbox, and SPIM. Download at
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/. We support yum, apt, and many
other RPM updater tools; see
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/repo-config.html for customized
configuration help for any of our supported distributions and updater
tools. Or just download and install
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/rpm/fedora-6-i386/RPMS.tools/cbi-package-config-6-4.i386.rpm
to automatically configure most popular RPM updaters to use the CBI
repository.

It's that easy! Tell your friends! Tell your neighbors! The more of
you there are, the more bugs we can find.

We still offer CBI packages for Fedora Core 1/2/4/5 too. When and if
you decide to upgrade to FC6, we'll be ready for you. Until then, your
participation remains valuable!

fedora project is hiring

2006-12-01 Thread Max Spevack

As of today, Red Hat has an open position within the Fedora Project.

http://redhat.hrdpt.com/cgi-bin/a/highlightjob.cgi?jobid=1810

The job is for a Fedora Infrastructure leader. No point in writing more
here, since I wrote the job description that you'll read if you click the
link above.

There is no location restriction on this job. It can be performed from Red
Hat's headquarters in Raleigh NC, from our Westford MA office, or from a
remote location, as long as the person is willing to travel to Raleigh,
Westford, or various data centers as needed.

Hiring regulations *require* that anyone who is interested submit their
resume through the online application process. However, if you would *in
addition* send an email to me as well, that certainly wouldn't be a bad
thing.

RPM -- plans, goals, etc.

2006-12-14 Thread Max Spevack

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

There has been a lot of discussion in the past few months about RPM -- its
present state, its future plans, and its leadership team. In particular,
the Fedora Project has received numerous requests asking us, what are you
guys doing about RPM?

Here is our answer, in a few words. Then if you want more, you can read
the rest of this note:

The Fedora Project is leading the creation of a new community around RPM.
One in which the leaders can come from Fedora, from Red Hat, from Novell,
from Mandriva, or from anywhere. Job #1 is to take the current RPM
codebase and clean it up, and in doing so work with all the other people
and groups who rely on RPM to build a first-rate upstream project.

==

The Fedora Board has spoken with Fedora stakeholders both inside and
outside Red Hat, developers/maintainers in Novell, and other parties who
rely on RPM as the foundation for their distributions. We wanted to make
sure those parties agreed that this was the right thing to do for their
respective communities. We touched base with some of these people at the
recent LSB conference, and the overwhelming community opinion there was in
favor of what we are outlining here.

At the most fundamental level, we begin with two points:

(1) RPM is an important piece of technology, not just for Fedora or for
Red Hat, but for many other distributions and users. Its stability and
maintenance are critical.

(2) Red Hat realizes the need to build a strong community of contributors
around RPM, that the upstream of RPM needs to be handled in a manner which
allows contributors and developers to have maximum freedom in their
modifications, and that those modifications can be easily shared across
distributions.

Expanding on that:

(3) RPM, as a file format, is good at what it does and capable of being
the core of a Linux distribution. From the Fedora perspective, we are not
particularly interested in making any grand deviations from it at this
time.

(4) RPM, as an application, has a fairly mature feature set that we are
very interested in stabilizing and bug fixing. Furthermore, we want to
make sure that RPM is a stable and simplified base for the building of
other technologies on top of it. Down the road, we might be interested in
exploring a variety of new features, but we don't believe that should be
the initial focus of our efforts.

Ultimately, the Fedora Project and Red Hat are committed to seeing RPM be
as healthy and vibrant as many other large open source projects -- GNOME,
Xorg, etc -- consumed and contributed to by many companies, users,
distributions, and developers. Our overall goal for RPM is to ensure that
is has consistency, reliability, and stability.

We switch now to a handy QA format:

Q -- So what, specifically, are you doing with RPM? And where is the work
going to happen?

We have set up a new repository, wiki, and webspace -- external to any
distribution or company -- for RPM, to which anyone can contribute. A
reboot of the upstream, if you will. We don't expect that everyone will
be running the same version of RPM, or run with the same patches, but we'd
like for there to be a single place that everyone can refer to as
upstream, and be able to contribute patches.

There is already a contributor base that exists around RPM -- engineers
within Red Hat, Novell, Mandriva, and other organizations. We don't want
to leave those people behind -- we want to do a better job of
collaborating and accepting their work.

Everything will live at rpm.org, with a relaunched wiki, code repository,
and mailing lists. As for rpm.org itself, its hosting and maintainership
is outside of Red Hat, and is being generously provided by Duke
University.

Q -- How is that different from what currently exists?

What we're doing here is collecting together everyone who has a stake in
the future of RPM and building a healthy community around it. This
involves major bug fixing, development work, performance work and making
regular, predictable releases. As it stands today, we don't have these
things. This is a good first step. Could you call it a fork? Maybe. But
we're doing it because we think it's the right thing to do, for
distributions all the way down to the individual users of RPM.

Q -- Where is all this stuff going to happen? What's the public mailing
list and wiki? What *EXACTLY* is Fedora or Red Hat going to do?

Short answer -- http://rpm.org

Over the past few years, engineers from Red Hat and other companies, as
well as a community of independent contributors, have been working on and
maintaining their own versions of RPM -- sometimes sharing patches,
sometimes not. It is important that these contributions move through an
upstream process like many other projects do, in order to maintain a
healthy community and proper checks and balances.

To that end, Red Hat is adding an additional engineer

Congratulations and thank you

2007-01-31 Thread Matthew J. Szulik
On behalf of all Red Hat associates, I want to thank all members of the
worldwide open source community for committing their time, skill and
intellect in creating a free and open source success - the Fedora OS.
Achieving 1M users in such a short time is impressive. But to me, the
real success of Fedora is the validation of the peer based, open source
development model that continues to innovate and produce useful
technology at the lowest cost to the user. Great work.

Changes to fedora-advisory-board list

2007-02-12 Thread Max Spevack
When the Fedora Advisory Board mailing list was first set up, it was put
together in this way:

1) Archives 100% open to all
2) Non member posting is moderated
3) Member posting is non-moderated
4) Membership is by approval.
5) People who want to lurk by not post could subscribe to
fedora-advisory-board-readonly

I've heard from a few people that this has been a source of confusion, and
that people who otherwise want to participate on fedora-advisory-board
aren't doing so, because they don't realize that we *want* them to
participate.

So, I've made some changes to the fedora-advisory-board list, effective
this morning.

Membership is now confirm via email rather than moderater approved so
basically list subscription is now the same as all other Fedora lists.

Still, fedora-advisory-board is the place where we like to have some of
the higher-level decision making begin, but with the assumption that it
will be pushed off to other lists as appropriate.

This decision also has the potential to lead to increased traffic on the
list. Let's keep the traffic on-topic and high in signal, versus noise.
The list's job will be to police its own.

*** NOTE ***

I will kill off the fedora-advisory-board-readonly list on March 1. Folks
who are on that list (and therefore reading this message) are encouraged
to subscribe directly to fedora-advisory-board.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Max

Announcing Desktop User Guide

2007-02-19 Thread John Babich

Fedora Core 6 Desktop User Guide
==

The Fedora Project presents:

The Fedora Desktop User Guide for Fedora Core 6

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/DesktopUserGuide

The Desktop User Guide is here to help you accomplish specific tasks
with the desktop applications. It is written for individuals who are
unfamiliar with the default Fedora Desktop and who may be running
their first Linux desktop.

The guide's approach is simple. It explains basic principles by
covering one principle at a time. The document does not assume
familiarity with any Linux/UNIX-specific terminology or concepts.
Functionality is also compared, where appropriate, to what
the reader may know from other OSes, particularly Microsoft
Windows.

Users of this guide should have a standard Desktop class installation
of Fedora, including a user account with the default settings. The
reader does not need access to the root password.

Special thanks to Jonathan Steffan (daMaestro) for filming, ogg-ifying,
and uploading the videos to us.

We're going to look into what it will take to put videos of this
size/length on YouTube, since that will get us wider distribution than
even the torrents can do.

Announcing Fedora 7 Test 2 (6.91)

2007-03-01 Thread Jesse Keating
Welcome to Fedora 7 Test 2

I am please to announce the second test release for Fedora 7.

Downloads

DVD and network installation are available.
Please read the Important Warnings below in this announcement for more
details.

http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
The recommended method of download is via BitTorrent from this site.

http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/mirrors.html
HTTP, FTP, and RSYNC downloads are available from Fedora Project mirrors
listed above. Note that not all mirrors may be synced at this time.

***Important Warnings about the Test Release***

Problems with mkinitrd

This test release has an rpm ordering issue that seems to affect some people
with regard to mkinitrd being installed correctly. If your install seems to
stall at installing the kernel and never continues, please try the updates
image http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/updates-f7t2.img. Refer to
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda/Updates for more information on using
updates images.

Upgrading with PATA Hard Disks

If you are using PATA (parallel or original style ATA) hard disks and you
attempt to do a manual yum upgrade to this release, you may be unable to boot
your system when finished. To avoid this problem, use the installer program
(Anaconda) to upgrade your system instead of using yum.

New in Fedora 7 Test 2

This test release includes significant new versions of many key components and
technologies. The following sections provide a brief overview of major
changes from the last release of Fedora.

Merger of Core and Extras

* The Fedora Core and Extras software repositories are being merged,
resulting in a shared infrastructure and a single repository of packages to
which everyone is invited to contribute.

* Fedora 7 Test 2 is packaged initially as a Desktop/Development
Workstation/Server implementation, called Prime. This spin is delivered in
DVD iso format only as a trial, see
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-February/msg00993.html
for the discussion on this.

* Many more packages are available in the development repositories.

* Three targetted spins are now under discussion: Fedora Prime, Fedora
KDE, and Fedora Everything. See
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureFedoraTargettedSpins for more
details.

Live CD

* This test release includes an i386 ISO for a Desktop Live CD. This Live
CD features the ability to install to a hard disk using the same graphical
Anaconda installer as the non-live CD variant.

Desktop

* This test release features GNOME 2.17.91.

* A brand new Echo icon theme is included as the default in this release.
This icon theme is incomplete, but with appropriate feedback and progress,
may become the default in the general release.

* KDE and Xfce, among several other packages, are included in the
development repositories, but not on the media. They can be installed using
the appropriate software management tools.

* Fast User Switching is now available via the fast-user-switch-applet.
See http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureFastUserSwitching for more
details.

Performance

* System performance is generally slower in the test releases as compared
to the general release since we enable several options that help with
debugging.

System Administration

* System administration tools may be modified under the testing process.

System Level Changes

* Fedora 7 Test 2 features a 2.6.21rc1 based kernel. Current release
information is being tracked on the kernel release notes source page.

Amanda

Users who upgrade from older releases need to read the amanda.conf and
amanda-client.conf man pages to learn about the the new syntax for calling
amandad, as well as edit the /etc/xinetd.d/amanda configuration file to
follow the new syntax.

Road Map And Release Schedule

* http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/7/

Intended Audience for Test Releases

Test 1 is targeted for developers, who use it at their own risk, and
contains many bleeding edge packages.

Test 2 is for early adopters. Most things should work and we need to your help
to find what is broken.

Test 3 is for early adopters. Most things should work and we need to your help
to find what is broken.

Test 4 is for beta users. This is the time when we must have full community
participation. Without this participation both hardware and software
functionality suffers.

Quality Assurance for Test Releases

The Fedora Project has a process in place for ensuring the highest possible
quality even in our test releases. Many bugs are identified, prioritized and
fixed during the testing process. We also have a list of known bugs in this
release. Refer to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/7/Test2TreeTesting for
more details.

== Announcements and Fedora Board ==

=== Fedora 7 Test 3 Announcement ===

The third of four test releases for Fedora 7 was announced by
JeremyKatz in
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2007-March/msg3.html
fedora-announce-list].

Fedora 7 Test 3 is packaged initially as a Desktop/Development
Workstation/Server implementation, called Prime. This spin is
delivered in DVD ISO format only.

This test release includes an i386 ISO for a Desktop Live CD. This
Live CD features the ability to install to a hard disk using the same
graphical Anaconda installer as the non-live CD variant.

This test release also includes an x86_64 ISO for a Desktop Live
image. Due to size, this requires a DVD. As with the i386 Live
image, the ability to install to a hard disk is available.

This test release features a new i386 ISO for a KDE Live CD. Note
that as of this writing, this ISO is only available via bittorrent. It
should be available via the mirrors in the near future. (Editor's
Note: It's now available from
[http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/test/6.92/
Fedora Download Site] and
[http://rhold.fedoraproject.org/Download/mirrors.html Mirror Sites].)

=== Board Meeting: 2007-03-27 ===

MaxSpevack reports in
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-advisory-board/2007-March/msg00279.html
fedora-advisory-board], the first 40 minutes of the meeting was spent
talking with Donald Fischer, Red Hat's VP of Online Services. One of
the things that was discussed is that Fedora 7 allows a group like
Donald's all the tools necessary to put together an Experimental
Desktop spin anytime they want, which can be really useful for
testing and getting their ideas into people's hands in a very
consumable way.

JeremyKatz indicated that LiveUSB keys are close to becoming a
reality. It is Jeremy's decision as to whether we can do a LiveUSB key
or just plain LiveCD for the [http://www.redhat.com/promo/summit/2007/
Red Hat Summit].

MaxSpevack summarized his recent conversation with ThorstenLeemhuis in
which they discussed the fact that the Fedora Board is inadvertantly
poaching some of the topics that are more appropriately discussed by
[http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Development/SteeringCommittee FESCo].

== Developments ==

=== Presto Debut Shows Great Promise ===

Presto is a yum plugin that uses ''deltas'', or small changes, between
software packages to increase the speed users obtain updates.
AhmedKamal and Jonathan Dieter took the initiative to adopt and modify
an implementation originally developed within Red Hat and targetted
for Red Hat RHN web service. The yum plugin uses delta packages when
available. Presto debuted on
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-March/msg01405.html
on March24th] . The Presto
[https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/presto/wiki/WikiStart
project] seeks testers using i386 FC6 systems.

RahulSundaram
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-March/msg01765.html
reported around 74%] savings in download size for an update using this
method. The plugin is planned to be packaged in Fedora, and mirrors
can be encouraged to make delta packages available so that more users
will test it.

=== Missing /dev/hdX Devices? ===

A query from a Fedora 7 development branch tester about why there was
no longer a `/dev/hda` on his system was
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-March/msg01455.html
answered] by WillWoods with the information that rawhide is using a
new libata that passes all devices (PATA/IDE and SATA subsystems)
through the SCSI layer so that all disk devices are now referenced as
`/dev/sdX`.

=== FC6 NetworkManager Gets Some Love ===

A discussion about why NM was being built against dbus-0.93 but is
currently running with dbus-1.0.1 morphed into an investigation of why
NM keeps on asking for the user's password
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-March/msg01458.html
each time the WEP key is needed]. When it was asserted that this had
become even more intrusive in rawhide with prompting at each
suspend/resume, Richard Hughes explained that this was a design
decision for security where gnome-power-manager tells gnome-keyring to
lock on suspend. After some discussion, Richard Hughes
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-March/msg01493.html
decided] to add a gconf option to make this behavior configurable.

=== LSB Compliance of Initscripts ===

Michal Marciniszyn was concerned
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-March/msg01544.html
that a recent audit] carried out by him showed that most of the
shipped initscripts returned exit codes of 0 when there was no
configuratin file. Jakub Jelinek

[EMAIL PROTECTED] is going away

2007-04-18 Thread Mike McGrath
Please note that in one week (April 25th)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] email addresses are going away.
These reasons are purely technical. People that need exceptions should
contact someone on the infrastructure team or stop by #fedora-admin on
irc.freenode.net for consideration on a case by case basis.

Announcing Fedora 7 Test 4 (6.93)

2007-04-26 Thread Will Woods
The Fedora Project is pleased to announce the release of the fourth and
final test release of Fedora 7!

Test 4 is for beta users. This is the time when we MUST have full
community participation. Without this participation both hardware and
software functionality suffers. We need your help. Join us!

Road Map And Release Schedule
=
This is the final test release before the final Fedora 7 release, which
is scheduled for May 24, 2007.

For further information see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/7/

How to get it:
=
DVD and network installation are available. We also offer three
different varieties of installable Live media - see Live CD, below.

http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
The recommended method of download is via BitTorrent from this site.

http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/mirrors.html
HTTP, FTP, and RSYNC downloads are available from Fedora Project mirrors
listed above. Note that not all mirrors may be synced at this time.

For those of you already running a pre-release version of Fedora 7, all
you need to do to upgrade to Test 4 is update your packages.

Release Notes:
=
Testing focus
  * Users of e1000 (Intel gigabit ethernet) devices should be on the
lookout for device lockups, although we believe this is fixed.
  * The new wireless stack is working well but still needs testing.
In particular, iwlwifi (Intel 3945) has been troublesome in the
past but should be much better in this release.
  * Upgrades from Fedora Core 6 (or older) should be tested, but
please
be careful - this is still a test release and we can't guarantee
everything will work as expected.

Important Warnings about the Test Release
  * The 2.6.21 kernel uses new IDE drivers which use the same
'libata' subsystem as the SATA drivers. As a side-effect, IDE
devices previously named /dev/hdX will now be named /dev/sdX.
This may cause problems with anything that mentions devices by
name instead of by filesystem label. Anaconda should be able to
detect most of these problems and help you fix them.

General
  * In previous test releases the default product was called
Prime, but after feedback from Marketing and the community it
has been renamed simply Fedora.
  * Fedora 7 Test 4's primary product is a Desktop/Development
Workstation/Server distribution which closely matches the
contents of previous Fedora Core releases.

Live CD
  * This test release includes three Live images: an i386 Desktop
Live CD, an x86_64 Desktop Live DVD, and an i386 KDE Live CD.
These Live CDs can be installed to disk using the graphical
Anaconda installer.

Desktop
  * This test release features GNOME 2.18.
  * The new Echo icon theme is no longer the default, although it is
still available from the repositories.
  * KDE and Xfce, among several other packages, are included in the
development repositories, but not on the media. They can be
installed using the appropriate software management tools.
  * Fast User Switching is now available via the
fast-user-switch-applet. See
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureFastUserSwitching
for more details.
  * The internet messaging program called Gaim is now known as
Pidgin. See http://pidgin.im/ for more info.

Performance
  * System performance is generally slower in the test releases as
compared to the general release since we enable several options
that help with debugging.
  * Yum / rpm performance should be better in this release than
previous Fedora 7 test releases.

System Level Changes
  * Amanda Users who upgrade from older releases need to read the
amanda.conf and amanda-client.conf man pages to learn about the
the new syntax for calling amandad, as well as edit
the /etc/xinetd.d/amanda configuration file to follow the new
syntax.
  * This release includes a kernel based on 2.6.21-rc7. Current
release information is tracked on the kernel release notes page:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/Kernel

Bug reporting and tracking:
==
The Release Engineering and QA teams keep track of bugs that are
considered release blockers. You can see that list here:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/showdependencytree.cgi?id=FC7Blocker

In addition, a list of non-blocker bugs that should be fixed for Fedora
7 if possible can be found here:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/showdependencytree.cgi?id=FC7Target

Please check these lists before reporting new bugs!

Bugs for this release should be reported against the Fedora Core
product, version 'devel'. You can use this convenient link to report
bugs:

=== Fedora Core 5 End of Life ===

MaxSpevack announces in fedora-announce-list[1],

Several months ago, the Fedora Board (in consultation with Red Hat
Engineering) decided to increase the length of time that Fedora
releases are supported, in terms of updates.

This decision was retroactively applied to Fedora Core 5, allowing it
to remain a fully maintained release for several months longer than it
would have under our old policy.

Fedora Core 5 will reach its End of Life[2] for updates on Friday June
29th, 2007.

=== CD Bootloader Change - Test Help Needed ===

WillWoods announces in fedora-test-list[1],

So, Fedora 7's CD/DVD boot menu needs a small tweak to work in qemu. We
want to make sure this change is safe and stable, so we need your help.

Please download the (8MB) test image from here[2]. Burn it to CD and
boot it in as many (i386/x86_64) machines as you can.
We want to know if the graphical menu looks right, and if the timer
counts down from 60. Report results here[3].

If the boot menu looks normal on all the machines we try it on, we'll
make this change for F7 final.

Seth Vidal and Toshio Kuratomi joining Red Hat

2007-05-09 Thread Max Spevack

Fedorans,

Another day, another email to fedora-announce-list from me.

As those of you who read this list may remember, back when we announced
the hiring of Mike McGrath as the Fedora Infrastructure Leader, the part
of that announcement that made me most happy was that we were able to hire
folks who were already well-established Fedora contributors to continue
their Fedora work full time, and earn a Red Hat paycheck doing it.

Well, I'm equally happy to announce today that both Seth Vidal and Toshio
Kuratomi have accepted jobs at Red Hat.

Now I'm make them both blush a little bit by talking a bit about their
contributions to Fedora.

Seth has been a Fedora contributor since the beginning. He is a member of
the Fedora Project Board. When I started my job with the Fedora Project
15 months ago, Seth was one of the guys who I was encouraged to talk to
frequently, and pay attention to what he says. Seth has also been known
to write some code from time to time. He leads the development of yum,
and will continue to do some from within Red Hat. He is very active in
the Fedora Infrastructure project. He has contributed significantly to
the code that makes the Fedora build system work. I don't think there is
any question that Seth is one of the true leaders within Fedora. People
seem to think he works for Red Hat already, and so we're glad to eliminate
that point of confusion also. :-)

Toshio is a rock-star programmer. Similar to Seth, he's been a Fedora
contributor for several years. He's been a member of the Fedora Extras
Steering Committee. He's worked closely with the Fedora Infrastrucutre
team on projects like the package database, and a lot of the work that
Fedora is doing with TurboGears. Toshio has worked on the Fedora Account
System, and is basically the lead developer for the Fedora Infrastructure
team. He cranks out really good code, and it's a great boon for Red Hat
to have him full time. As a signing bonus, I have set aside the LAST PAIR
of Fedora flip flops that exists for the next time I see him.

Congrats to both Seth and Toshio. Back to work, now! :-)

=== Fedora 7 -- what, when, and why ===

MaxSpevack announces in fedora-announce-list[1],

The next version of Fedora will be released on May 24th. It will be
called Fedora 7 -- not Fedora Core 7. It's the most ambitious
release of Fedora that we've undertaken, and I hope that when we look
back at Fedora 7 one or two years down the road, the decisions that we
made for this release will have proven to be as impactful as anything
we've done in the Fedora space since the start of the Fedora Project.

In one sentence: Fedora 7 has been about improving the manner in
which all future Fedora releases will be made.

=== Fedora 7 Deep Freeze/GA release schedule change ===

JoshBoyer announces in fedora-maintainers[1],

The bulk of the Core/Extras merge has now been finished, and the Release
Engineering team has been working hard to get things back in shape for
the final F7 release. However, due to the massive nature of this
undertaking, we are not coming back online as fast as we had hoped.

While this slip is unfortunate, it is also in the best interest for the
quality of the release. Please bear with us as we strive to make this
the best release of Fedora to date!

=== Post-merge howto and FAQ ===

JoshBoyer announces in fedora-maintainers[1],

Due to popular demand, I sat down and wrote up a brief howto for
handling packages in the merged world. Given that I'm almost guaranteed
to have not answered all the questions, it's living under the wiki[2]
for the moment.

Hopefully it will give the package maintainers a high
level overview of what to do and how to do it. Feel free to ask
questions and I (or others) will try to address them.

snazzy lighting and decor, for a video interview conducted by Kim
Jokisch and mainly shot by Red Hat filmmaker extraordinaire Tim

KarlieRobinson reports in fedora-marketing-list[1],

On May 12, I went to

a few words about Fedora 7

2007-05-31 Thread Max Spevack

My fellow Fedorans,

In a few hours (about 10:00 AM EDT/2:00 PM GMT), Fedora 7 will go live
to the world.

It's the middle of the night in the main Red Hat offices in Raleigh and
Westford, but I amm in Berlin this week for LinuxTag, which is the
largest Linux conference in Europe (10,000 visitors over 4 days).

We have a great looking Fedora booth, and we are holding a FUDCon
(Fedora Users and Developers Conference) here today during which we have
a conference hall that probably seats 150 people all to ourselves. We
are giving speeches and talks about Fedora all day long, both in German
and in English. I've already had several people come by asking when
Alan Cox will be arriving. Answer: Real Soon Now.

We have several activities ongoing at the Fedora booth, including an
install-fest, and a troubleshooting contest with prizes that include
free books and free Red Hat training classes. We have all variety of
Fedora swag as well. It's quite an impressive setup here at LinuxTag,
and worth noting that the entire organizational force behind the event
was driven by our Fedora Ambassador community of volunteers.

This email is my personal Fedora 7 release announcement, and also
touches on some of the topics that I will mention during my speech at
FUDCon today.

Before I talk about Fedora 7, it's useful to look at recent history.
One of the Fedora Project's mottos is the rapid progress of free and
open source software. With Fedora Core 5 in March of 2006, Fedora Core
6 in October of 2006, and Fedora 7 today, that's about 7 months per
release. And with several million Fedora Core 6 installs, everyone who
works on Fedora should feel very proud that not only is the software
being released often, but it's also high quality, and in high use around
the world.

Fedora 7 represents the culmination of several goals that Fedora has
spent the last few releases (spanning the course of at least 2 years)
working to achieve.

I've written previously on this list about the aspects of Fedora 7 that
I think are the most important (http://tinyurl.com/yuc7ax).

From my perspective, it is the fundamental infrastructure changes that

Fedora 7 represents that are the biggest achievement.

The entire Fedora toolchain has been freed. Every step in the
distribution-building process is completely open.

Code checked into an external CVS. Packages built on a completely
external build system. Distros and LiveCDs built on completely open
compose tools.

All of this functionality is available via the command line or via a
graphical tool that is build on the APIs that we provide.

For folks who hack on free software, I hope that this is a compelling
development environment in which to work. For folks who are end users
of free software, we believe that the Fedora toolchain allows people to
remix Fedora, and customize it in ways that will provide a much wider
variety of Fedora-based spins than we could ever offer if Fedora
Release Engineering had to build them all directly.

There is plenty more, but this email isn't meant to be an exhaustive
list of Fedora 7 release features.

Additionally, I'd like to mention a few other new things that Fedora has
completed in time for Fedora 7:

Our home page, fedoraproject.org has a new look. We've added a series
of static HTML pages that sit on top of our wiki, and I think it makes
the initial experience of fedoraproject.org much simpler, and much more
useful. The organized chaos of the wiki is all still just one click
away, but we didn't want first-time visitors to fp.o overwhelmed with
the wiki from the first instant.

Our documentation pages have also been given some new organization,
living at docs.fedoraproject.org.

The lifespan of a Fedora release has been increased to two releases
plus one month. This means that Fedora Core 6 will continue to be
updated until one month after Fedora 8 is released, and Fedora 7 will be
updated until one month after Fedora 9 is released.

We've put into production new mirror management software.

The EPEL project, which aims to make packages from the Fedora repository
available for Enterprise Linux customers, has been making tremendous
progress.

The Fedora News team, which already had been doing a fantastic job, has
expanded the coverage that they provide the Fedora Project, and their
Fedora Weekly News reports offer people a fantastic summary of all the
interesting things that are happening in the Fedora Project.

And more.

Finally, a few words of thanks. I debated for a while listing specific
names in this email, but the number of people who deserve credit for
Fedora 7 and all of the work that has happened around Fedora 7 cannot be
enumerated without accidentally forgetting someone. So instead I will
simply say that every item discussed in this email has happened as a
result of tremendous work by Fedora contributors both inside and outside
of Red Hat. And it

=== Fedora 8's FUDCon Cancelled ===

MaxSpevack announces in fedora-devel-announce[1],

Yesterday the Fedora Board made the decision not to hold an in-person
FUDCon for F8. Like you, I'm a disappointed, but I'm also excited for
us to try out an organized, weekend-long virtual hackfest (more
below).

The feature list for Fedora 8 is coming together very well, and we're
planning over the next few weeks how we can do a virtual hackfest for
F8. The idea is to pick some days, probably the same weekend (4, 5
August), and organize energy around people having an IRC-based
hackfest that weekend.

Kadischi reached End Of Life

2007-07-09 Thread Chitlesh GOORAH

Hello there,
A few days ago, I mentioned[1] there is no one behind kadischi's
development team and it will be EOL'ed this saturday.

So today is Saturday 07 July 2007 (in a few minutes it will be 08 July
2007), kadischi's bug review[2] was marked and closed as NOTABUG,
while the remaining 4 open bugs under kadischi's name :
# A first experience ( #222568 )
# Kadischi does not build on VMware hosted OS ( #216151 )
# Kadischi may raise an exception when attempting to copy device
files. ( #211692 )
# Processed: Kadischi build fails if dietlibc is installed ( #167220 )
were closed as WONTFIX.

Therefore, I'm announcing the official EOF of Kadischi. It is sad, but
it is _not_ the end of creation of custom spins at the Fedora Project
since Jeroen van Meeuwen and his friends are actively maintaining
revisor[3]. If you were a kadischi user in the past, you will probably
see revisor as a better alternative.

# I'll like to thank everyone who participated in the kadischi
project: whether by contributing codes
# or by testing, translations, documentation,...
We will still be looking forward to see your contributions at the new
revisor project.

The Fedora Livecd Mailing list[4] is still active and you can still
asked your livecd related questions there. However I don't know what
will be the state of the #fedora-livecd irc channel on freenode. The
average number of people who joined this channel daily is 5 and
there's pretty much no discussions. Well, #fedora-devel is always
crowded.

cheers,
Chitlesh

=== New Infrastructure Ticketing System ===

MikeMcGrath announces in fedora-devel-announce[1],

The Infrastructure Team has decided to change ticketing systems. The
new system is available at [2]. We'll be continuing to set that site
up but tickets can now be filed there. The previous ticketing system
at [3] turned out to be a bit to heavy for our teams needs. Using a
Trac system feels more natural to us and we suspect it will feel more
natural to the community as well.

The new Fedora Board

2007-07-10 Thread Max Spevack

Hi everyone,

We've just completed the first Fedora Board succession process, and I
wanted to take a moment to share the results with everyone.

Staying on for another release cycle are Seth Vidal, Bill Nottingham,
Chris Blizzard, and Matt Domsch.

Joining them are 5 new Board members.

Karsten Wade is a Senior Developer Relations Manager at Red Hat. He has
been a long-time contributor to Fedora, serving previously as the
Chairman of the Fedora Documentation Steering Committee. He is active
in community building, writing, website design, translations, and
documentation. Karsten lives in Santa Cruz, CA.

Dennis Gilmore works as a Enterprise Systems Administrator at Jupiter
Images in Peoria, IL. Dennis has worked in most aspects of Fedora.
Currently he is involved in Infrastructure, FESCo, and EPEL, He is also
an active package maintainer and active on implementing secondary
architecture's. Dennis Lives in Washington, IL with his wife and two
dogs.

Christopher Aillon is the Desktop Applications Engineering Team Lead for
Red Hat, where he has worked since 2004. He has been a long time
contributor to the Mozilla Project (e.g. Firefox, Thunderbird) and has
made many contributions to NetworkManager and various GNOME
applications. He has been heavily involved with Fedora, having made
contributions to over 100 packages.

Jef Spaleta is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the SuperDARN research
group at the Geophysical Institute on the UAF campus. He has been an
active community contributor in some form or fashion since the Fedora
Project began. Initially focusing on end-user troubleshooting and bug
triage, then as a Fedora Extras contributor. He lives in Fairbanks,
Alaska and enjoys the alternating seasonal joys of curling and canoing
and the pleasantly squeaky sound that snow makes under your shoe at -20
F.

Steve Dickson is a kernel Engineer at Red Hat. For the last five years
or so he has been responsible their NFS, NIS, CIFS and QUOTA packages
(both kernel and user level). His responsibilities include both RHEL
and Fedora releases. In prior lives he worked on DEC's TruCluster
product as well as a short stint working in the infiniband world writing
both user and kernel applications for the Linux. Steve started his
career at Lachman Associates developing and supporting SCO's NFS
implementation.

Smolt, Open Invitation

2007-07-16 Thread Mike McGrath
Smolt will reach 75,000 profiles in the next 24 hours and with that news
I'm excited to announce functional clients that work in SuSE, Debian,
and Ubuntu. With the help of the Linux community at large we could
start to better understand what is out there. Look to changes in the
near future like a ratings system, better reporting tools and other such
improvements.

But we need your help! We would like knowledgeable contributors help
with our code base, especially in the scope of packaging the smolt
client for SuSE, Debian, Ubuntu, Mandrake, you name it. We're hoping
Smolt will grow far beyond being just a Fedora thing and become a
Linux thing. If you are a member of another community and are
interested in collaboration please let me know, if you know someone that
might be interested, tell them!

fedorapeople.org is now available

2007-07-18 Thread seth vidal
Hi Everyone,
fedorapeople.org is now available for general use.

What is fedorapeople.org?:
It is a site where fedora contributors can upload files for sharing
out with the world. It is perfect for uploading specfiles, srpms,
patches, etc, etc. Each fedora contributor has 150M of quota-controlled
space. Users can upload using scp, sftp or rsync. Once uploaded into the
users public_html directory the files are available via http at:
http://your_username.fedorapeople.org/. To connect to fedorapeople.org
just use the ssh key you uploaded to your fedora account and then you
can login via ssh to: fedorapeople.org

What fedorapeople.org is NOT:
 - it is not a place for you to upload confidential or
copyright-violating files.
 - it is not a shell for you to login and stay logged into
 - it is not a place for you to run your favorite proxy of whatever kind
 - it is not a database server
 - it is not a mail server
 - it is not a run-my-favorite-cgi-server
 - it is not a blog server

We've tried our best to minimize and secure the services. Don't make a
lot of unreasonable requests asking for us to undo that. :)

For reasonable requests please file put them in the fedora
infrastructure ticketing system:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/Tickets

Let us know what breaks,

=== Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) Now Open ===

KarstenWade announces in fedora-announce-list[1],

If you use enterprise-class Linux (EL) distributions derived from
Fedora, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux or CentOS, we have something
very exciting for you.

EPEL[2] is a community of package maintainers working from inside of
Fedora. Many are the same people who maintain the Fedora version. Yet,
there room for new packages and contributors. Currently, around 1000
packages are available, and we've been growing at the rate of several
dozen packages every week.

=== 3000 Fedora 7 installations ===

NayyarAhmad announces in fedora-ambassadors-list[1],

After a long discussions and few presentation, i have convinced
Mozambique[2] Ministry of Finance (SISTAFE) to migrate their
workstation around the country from MS Windows to Linux (Fedora 7),
now they have officially approved the migration country wide and i
will supervise this migration, plus will help them in end user
training, its the first time in Mozambique that a Govt. department
have opt for Linux (Fedora) and in my opinion it has been a big
achievement, as after their migration i will be able to speak with
other ministries and private firms.

I have the privilege to communicate that Chile already has a site for
the community of Fedora users.
This site tries to give information to local users, as well as to make
available a local Yum mirror of Updates.
You can enter the site http://fedora.linuxdiinf.org

=== Location For Menu Entries And Customization ===

''Joe Klemmer [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I have all three of the major
desktop environments installed on my systems. My primary is Xfce but
I do use GNOME or KDE at times. One thing I have found is that the
menu's are not consistent across desktops. On my system Fedora 7 box
it seems that KDE has MANY more entries in it's menu than GNOME or
Xfce. Xfce generates it's menu on the fly and I'm guessing that the
other two do as well. Is there any standard for placement of .desktop
files? Something more effective than locate .desktop

As an adjunct to this, is there a proper place for users to put
manually created .desktop files? I have been putting them with the
regular ones in /usr/share/applications/ but I'd be more at ease if
there were a place under $(HOME) to put them. Something other than
$(HOME)/Desktop as I wish to have entries in the menus but not on the desktop.''

Desktop menu entries in GNOME, KDE and Xfce among others follow the
freedesktop.org desktop entry specification [1]. The specification
allows for certain entries to be shown only in one particular desktop
environment or excluded from others based on the how they are
specified in the desktop files in Fedora packages. The menu is
generated dynamically from the .desktop files.

The system default folder in Fedora for menu entries is

=== Cleaning Old Files and Packages ===

''Peter A. Shevtsov [EMAIL PROTECTED]: From time to time I
install some new software on my computers just to look at it, to try,
to see if it is the right tool for me, etc. After reading new articles
on Fedora Daily Package I run yum more frequently :)

This software requires some additional packages, libraries, etc. Also,
it creates some config files in my home dir. But when I remove the
software the redundant packages (libraries) and config files stay in
my system. Is there any way to remove theses unused packages and old
config files?''

By way of answering your question about configuration files, consider
that package updates are actually a remove and an install action. If
configuration files were included in package removal, instead of
sometimes treated specially, then upgrading a package might actually
erase the administrator's system configuration! This is obviously not
a desirable outcome, so many packages mark their system configuration
files in the RPM database so they are not yanked off the system. To
see if an installed package has a specially marked configuration file,
use the command {{{rpm -qc package_name}}}.

If you want to clean your system of packages that are not required by
any other software on your system, you can use the
{{{package-cleanup}}} script that is part of the 'yum-utils' package.
Install 'yum-utils' with the command {{{su -c yum -y install
yum-utils}}} and then run {{{su -c package-cleanup --leaves}}} to

== News Update From F13 ==
 * Test2 is on the way to mirrors
 * rawhide is now back to being rawhide unfrozen
 * minimal buildroots have been adjusted (util-linux-ng is back,
perl(-devel) not listed)

 * have a list of names for F8--need to followup with legal
 * we should really go after the broken deps and upgrade paths a week
or two before the test3 freeze

 * when are we supposed to turn off new packages for FC6?
   * FC6 gets shut down one month after F8, do we turn off new packages
beforehand?
 * I'm working on the signing server stuff, and making good progress.
I updated the Spec page for it and moved it into
ReleaseEngineering/Projects/ space.
   * hope to have something reasonable for a code drop in a git module
or something by the end of this week. Right now things like gpg key and
passphrase are hardcoded so I don't want to commit that anywhere right
now (:

Announcing Fedora 8 Test 2 (7.91)

2007-09-13 Thread Jesse Keating
Batten down the hatches, Fedora 8 Test 2 spotted just over the port
side bow!

A veritable sea of choices await you in this release. First up is
the Fedora installable 'choose your own adventure' style set of isos
and trees for i386, x86_64, and ppc(64). Next up we have a variety of
Live images:

 * Fedora Live (i686, x86_64, ppc) - A good general use Desktop live
image. i686 even fits on a CD!

 * Fedora KDE Live (i686, x86_64) - A Desktop based on the KDE software
suite. i686 even fits on a CD!

 * Fedora Developer Live (i686) - A Live image designed for software
developers.

 * Fedora Electronic Lab (FEL) Live (i686) - A live image designed for
engineers working on electronics. Fits on a CD!

Remember that these Live images can be used on USB meida via the
'livecd-iso-to-disk' utility available in the livecd-tools package.

Test 2 is for beta users. This is the time where we have more
features in a testable state where the more people using them and the
more feedback we get the better. So please help us make Fedora 8 as
good as we can!

Fedora Unity releases updated Fedora 7 Re-Spins.

2007-09-28 Thread Robert 'Bob' Jensen
The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of new ISO
Re-Spins (DVD and CD Sets) of Fedora 7. These Re-Spin ISOs are based on
Fedora 7 and all updates released as of September 12th, 2007. The ISO
images are available for i386 and x86_64 architectures via jigdo
starting Friday, September 28th, 2007. We have included CD Image sets
for those in the Fedora community that do not have DVD drives or burners
available.

Fedora Unity has taken up the Re-Spin task to provide the community with
the chance to install Fedora with recent updates already included.
These updates might otherwise comprise more than 700MiB of downloads for
a default install. This is a community project, for and by the
community. You can contribute to the community by joining our test process.

If you are interested in helping with the testing or mirroring efforts,
please contact the Fedora Unity team. Contact information is available
at http://fedoraunity.org/ or the #fedora-unity channel on the Freenode
IRC Network (irc.freenode.net).

Fedora-fr association was born !

2007-10-01 Thread Thomas Canniot
Dear Fedora user,

All the French Fedora Team is glad to announce you the creation of the
association of the French speaking Fedora users.

We will need your help to drive this project where all the users of
Fedora are working for the same goal, the promotion of Fedora.

Why an association ?

* In order to promote Free software in general and the Fedora
distribution in particular. This promotion will lead to the creation of
support for the Fedora promotion, from simple flyers to CD/DVD for the
installation of Fedora.
* To support our website, one of the most important tool for the French
community.
* An association helps to increase the presence of the French community
and gives more weight to his talk, indeed an association has more
credibility in front of its partners, ie Fedora project, Red Hat or
others.

You should notice that the association has no link with the Fedora
project itself or Red Hat. The project has been informed of the
creation of the association but did not encourage it or support it in
any way.

What are the goals of the association ?

* Promote free software around a central element: the GNU/Linux
distribution Fedora.
* Promote Fedora on different associations and events or meetings.
* Create a network integrating users and developers of the Fedora
GNU/Linux distribution.

What are our resources ?

* The French ambassador team, localized all around France, involved in
different Linux User Group and other association.
* The dues from our members.
* The sell of goodies (T-shirts, mugs, hat...) should financially help
to the association.

Who is at the head of the association ?

The member of the board are:
President: Thomas Canniot (MrTom)
Vice-president: Armel Kermorvant (armelk)
Treasurer: Johan Cwiklinski (trashy)
Secretary: Guillaume Kulakowski (llaumgui)

Other members of the board:
Maxime Carron (Pingoomax)
Thierry Delmonte (Titax)
Charles Vinchon (littlecharly)

All are Fedora ambassador.

Why becoming a member ?

* Because you wish to be imply in the association's activities.
* Because you wish to financially support the association to promote
the distribution GNU/Linux Fedora and Free Software, without being
actively involved in these actions.
* Because you can become a member from 10 euros.

Who can become a member ?

The association accepts all French speaking people who wish to help the
promotion of the Free software and the GNU/Linux distribution Fedora.

How to become a member ?

We invite you to have a look at the procedure described on the
association's website http://asso.fedora-fr.org/Comment_devenir_membre

How to do a simple donation ?

If you wish to do a simple donation, you can have a look at the website
http://ass.fedora-fr.org/Dons

How to be involved in the Association actions ?

One of the first goal of the association is to create support for the
Fedora promotion during different the events and meetings. If you wish
to be involved, actually there are several projects for which we are
looking for help:
* Small books presenting Fedora
* Flyers
* Posters
* Stickers
* Pens
* Keyrings
* ...

We are also looking for partners to create Fedora CDs/DVDs.

Where to find information about the association ?

One website for all information, http://asso.fedora-fr.org

All the team of Fedora-fr association is available to answer your
questions and help you to lead your projects.

Fedora-fr Team.

Announcing Fedora 8 Test 3 (7.92)!

2007-10-04 Thread Jeremy Katz
Fedora 8 Test 3 is here! This is the last test release before the
development freeze and a great time to test all those packages that you
know and love. Test 3 is for beta users. This is the time when we must
have full community participation. Without this participation both
hardware and software functionality suffers.

Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in
free and open source software. Fedora is always free for anyone to use,
modify, and distribute. It is built by people across the globe who work
together as a community: the Fedora Project. The Fedora Project is open
and anyone is welcome to join.

Up-to-date release notes for Fedora 8 Test 3 can be found at
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes.

== Changes from Fedora 8 Test 2 ==

 * Online Desktop provides a desktop experience designed around online
services. A preview of Online Desktop is provided via BigBoard, which is
a optional sidebar in GNOME.

 * KDE 3.5.7 is available in the KDE Live image as well as the regular
DVD. The KDE 4 (Beta) Development Environment is available in the
repository.

 * Live installations are faster and require a smaller root filesystem.
The file system layout has also changed somewhat. System files for the
Live images are now under `LiveOS/`, and a new `README` file has been
provided as a short introduction to the live image.

 * Package management now features much better performance via `yum` and
friends.

 * The completely free and open source Java environment called Iced Tea
is installed by default. Iced Tea is derived from OpenJDK, includes a
browser plugin based on GCJ, and is available for both x86 and x86_64
architectures. GCJ is still the default on PPC architecture.

 * CodecBuddy is now included, and promotes free, superior quality, open
formats to end users trying to play multimedia content under patent
encumbered or proprietary formats.

 * Bluetooth devices and tools now have better graphical and system
integration.

 * Laptop users benefit from the quirks features in HAL, including
better suspend/resume and multimedia keyboard support.

 * There is now improved power management thanks to both a tickless
kernel in `x86` and `x86_64` architectures, and a reduction in
unnecessary processor wakeups via `powertop`.

 * Eclipse 3.3 (Europa), a new release of the great IDE and development
platform, is available as part of this release.

 * The `pam_console` module has been removed in favor of access control
via HAL, which modernizes the desktop.

 * NetworkManager 0.7 provides improved wireless network management
support. It includes support for multiple devices and provides the
capability of system-wide configuration, among many other enhancements.
This transition may induce some regressions temporarily, and more
testing and feedback is appreciated.

 * Secure remote management capability is now provided for Xen, KVM, and
QEMU virtualization.

 * Transifex provides a web-based translation interface to allow users
to contribute translation work for Fedora hosted projects as well as
being able to provide translations to upstream directly to any upstream
project.

 * Integration of unique build IDs into Fedora's software building
infrastructure now provide enhanced debugging capabilities and core
dumps.

 * Fedora now offers easier rebranding of Fedora derivatives via a
`generic-logos` software package. Changes in Fedora's mirror structure
also make creation of derivatives easier.

 * Fedora now includes support for Nepali Language, extending its reach
to many more users.

=== What's New in Fedora 8 ===

 * A major list of features is available at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/8/FeatureList.

=== Release Schedule for Fedora 8 ===

 * The Fedora 8 release schedule can be found at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/8/Schedule. Fedora 8 is scheduled
for general release on 8 November 2007.

=== How to Get Fedora 8 Test 3 ===

 * Fedora 8 Test 3 can be installed via Live image, regular DVD, or via
network installation. You can find the DVD images as well as the
primary live images at:

http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/Fedora/7.92/

 * You can also download the DVD and Live images via bittorrent at:

http://torrent.fedoraproject.org

 * More information on the various spins available with the release of
Fedora 8 Test 3 is available at:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F8Test3/Spins

People who are already running the rawhide (development) branch of
Fedora or any of the previous test releases can simply run `yum update`.
(Some current Rawhide packages might be newer than Fedora 8 Test 3
packages.) We also appreciate new installation testing for feedback on
changes to the Anaconda installer.

=== Announcing Fedora 8 Test 3 (7.92)! ===

JeremyKatz announces in fedora-announce-list[1],

Fedora 8 Test 3 is here! This is the last test release before the
development freeze and a great time to test all those packages that you
know and love. Test 3 is for beta users. This is the time when we must
have full community participation. Without this participation both
hardware and software functionality suffers.

''Mark McLaughlin: How can I be a part of the Fedora project and be

You can be part of Fedora by joining one of the sub projects available
at http://fedoraproject.org/join-fedora.html. Any Fedora contributor
would be able to vote for a codename for the upcoming releases of
Fedora. Ideas are worth it's weight in gold but the key factor in
realizing those ideas in many instances is to step up and do the work
involved. With Free software, you don't have to be contend with merely
being a consumer and you have the nice opportunity to go beyond it and
drive the changes you desire. Go for it.

If you are interested in distributing media freely to more end users,
join the Free Media project at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia where hundreds of
copies of Fedora is being distributed every month all over the world
by volunteers in the Fedora community. Give everyone you can, the

=== Fedora 8 - Blocker bugs status ===

RahulSundaram points out in his blog[1],

As we get ready for a new release of Fedora, the things we worry
about most are the blocker bugs. A couple of QA meetings back, I
suggested to Will Woods to post status reports of the blocker bugs
every week or alternative week to get some eyes on the important bugs
that can block a release and delay it and he has been doing those now
and then.

=== Fedora 8 ALSA kernel needs Testing ===

WarrenTogami points out in his blog[1],

We are seriously considering using this newer upstream ALSA in F8.
But given the tight schedule we need testing to be sure it doesn't
horribly break anyone. Reportedly it makes sound behave MUCH better on
newer laptops, like ICH8 Intel hardware. Test!

More translations are on the way, if you're a translator, help

=== Fedora 8 Release is on its Way Out ===

JeremyKatz points out in his blog[1],

As a few other people have mentioned, we finished up Fedora 8 on
Friday and it's currently on its way to the mirror masters so that the
mirrors should be able to start picking it up tomorrow (just pending
getting the export control bits into place) and we'll be releasing on
Thursday. Overall, I'm feeling pretty good about the release -- we got
some good things in and I think that a lot of the improvements should
be pretty visible to most of our users. Doesn't mean there are things
that could be better or that we could do better from a process
perspective. But for the moment, I think I'm going to try to enjoy the
fact that the release is done.

=== Fedora 8 Release Summary ===

JonathanRoberts points out in his blog[1],

Fedora 8 is out in 5 days now and as part of our final marketing
efforts we've been putting together a release summary. Take a look at
it, and if there's a new feature that you really like and we've
missed, add a section on it! And if there's a feature you really like
that we haven't done justice too, (please remember, we're trying to
keep it brief) expand and improve on what we've done!

=== Upgrading from Rawhide to Final Release ===

MaxSpevack points out in his blog[1]

Every release cycle, there seems to be confusion about how to
transition over from Rawhide (the nightly build of Fedora) to whatever
the final release is (in this case, Fedora 8). This confusion is
understandable, because at first glance the process is a bit magical.
Let's see if I can explain it a little bit. The short answer is this:
you don't have to do anything! It will Just Work.

rpm.livna.org repositories for Fedora 8 (Werewolf) now available

2007-11-08 Thread Thorsten Leemhuis
On behalf of the Livna ( http://rpm.livna.org ) contributers I'd like to
announce the availability of the Livna package repository for Fedora 8
(Werewolf). The Livna repository hosts software as RPM packages which
cannot be shipped in the official Fedora repository for various reasons
and supports the i386, x86_64 and ppc architectures.

Using the Livna repository gives your Werewolf the ability to play all
kinds of audio such as MP3 files and plays DVDs. Additionally Livna
offers the ATI and Nvidia closed-source drivers in a Fedora-compatible
rpm package for the Fedora users whose videocards are not yet fully
supported with the stock open source drivers.

You can browse the repository at http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/8/ To make
it available on a freshly installed Fedora 8 system run the following
command:

{{{
$ su -c 'rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm'
}}}

Further below you'll find some more examples on getting the important
bits for a modern system installed from livna.

On another note, I have some sad news:

Fedora 8 will be the last release livna will be offering its add-on
packages for. But don't despair, the future is bright: The Livna
contributers are busy working together with the guys behind dribble and
freshrpms to offer a unified repository in the future bringing you
games, multimedia software and other tools from a single source. This
merged repository is called RPM Fusion; you can find more information
about it at http://rpmfusion.org/

Interested? Want to help? Then don't hesitate and subscribe to the
developers mailing lists at
http://lists.rpmfusion.org/mailman/listinfo/rpmfusion-developers
or meet us in the #rpmfusion channel on freenode.

That's all folks. Thank you for your attention and we wish you a very
pleasant flight with the newly released Fedora 8 together with the Livna
repositories.

Bye!
  Thorsten Leemhuis

== More details ==

Ladies and gentleman, the pilot has informed me that we've reached our
travel altitude. You can now loosen your seatbelt's and our flight
attendants will be with you shortly for refreshments. Still aboard and
reading? Great, here are some more informations for the curious:

=== Reminder for the folks that plan to yum-update to Fedora 8 ===

If you have livna-packages installed on your system and plan to
live-update to Fedora 8 using yum then please leave the livna-repos
enabled for the big yum update run. Then you'll get all the updated
packages from livna as well, which is important, as their dependencies
get fulfilled by the Fedora 8 packages -- that's not the case for the
old Livna packages that might still be installed on your Fedora system.

=== Examples to get the most important bits from livna ===

Once you installed the release-rpm you can install software using the
graphical software installation tool called pirut, which is part of
Fedora. You as root-users can also use yum on a command line to install
packages; for example:

 * if you'd like to install xine as a video-player run
{{{
# yum install xine-lib-extras-nonfree xine
}}}

* if you prefer mplayer run
{{{
# yum install mplayer-gui
}}}

* if you prefer vlc run
{{{
# yum install vlc
}}}

* if you want to get the latest nvidia graphic drivers for modern cards
and the stock Fedora kernel run
{{{
# yum install kmod-nvidia
}}}
and restart X.

* if you want to get the latest amd graphic drivers for the stock Fedora
kernel run
{{{
# yum install kmod-fglrx
}}}
and restart X.

* you want to get MP3-Support in Gnome apps? run
{{{
# yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly
}}}

* you're using KDE? Well, then run:
{{{
# yum install k3b-extras-nonfree kdemultimedia-extras-nonfree
}}}

For those who caused this bandwidth flood
And whosoever took the risk
But failed to make an extra disc
Must face the Bastard Op from Hell
And lose his access to the shell

The best of Linux now is here
To kill the FUD and strike with fear
The hearts of those who steal your rights
