Sheila,
I am so incredibly sorry. We have also gone
through multiple losses in a short period of time. I am not sure why that
happens, but it seems to happen like this often. Two of my mother's cats
died within 2 days of each other, without being the same age or having the same
health problems or even being close to each other. It really is too much
to bear.

If Tiger was really positive and lived to 14, that is a miracle and an
inspiration to all of us. You must have done an incredible job of taking
care of him and Tipper.

I am praying for you and your other babies.

Michelle
Please add my baby Tiger to the list. He past this morning 3 am.
He was 14 years old felv+. He was a healthy orange tabby up until two weeks
ago. Around the same time I lost Tipper he started showing signs of kidney
failure. My husband and I are numb with grief. Two babies in one month is to
much to bare. Please pray for us and our other babies.

Hi Belinda, This is the response I got from PETA
(immediately, they're aware of this site), they
suggest contacting the ISP to get the site pulled off.

Thank you for contacting PETA with your concerns
regarding SaveToby.com, which have been shared with
the appropriate staffers here.

Sadly, some people regard the Internet as a medium for
sick jokes.
Often, those who develop or contribute to hostile or
otherwise abusive
Web sites do so simply to draw attention with
offensive content. Of
course, such sites are in very poor taste but,
unfortunately, are
usually legal. Since these heartless people are
encouraged by
attention,
the most effective way to discourage them is to avoid
visiting their
sites and to urge others to do the same.

PETA cannot endorse giving money to SaveToby.com,
since doing so will
only encourage other cruel individuals to threaten
animals in order to
extort money from compassionate people.

You may wish to complain to the site's internet
service provider (ISP)
and request that the site be removed. An investigation
may determine
that the site's content violates the ISP's user
agreement. To find the
ISP of this site, please visit
http://www.H4HA.org/stopcruelty/query.html. You can
also submit
offensive sites to the Animal Cruelty Action List at

It is important to remember that rabbits, as well as
millions of cows,
chickens, pigs and other animals also suffer and die
daily on factory
farms and in slaughterhouses and butcher shops. To

ways to stop this cruelty, please visit

Hi
All..

Peggy, would you please pass this on to Tinley? Thanks.

Also, thank you Dan for your leg of the trip. I understand it wasn't so special. :) You are a good man.

I left off with going to meet Tom at the Wisconsin Dells. We arrived between 10:00 and 10:30 PM. We had a few words with Tom and thanked him again profusely. When he opened his car door the tom cat smell just about floored us. lol Poor Tom. :( We got the cats transferred to our car and thanked Tom again. He took off for home
and we decided to find an out of the way place in the Dells. We were tired and knew the cats would appreciate getting out of the kennels. Also, since we hadn't brought any gas masks I knew we needed to do some cleaning up. lol

Just a few blocks from the pick up we found a small place called The Malibu Inn. It is owned and operated by a very nice Turkish family. My daughter went to check to see if they had a quiet room and if they would accept cats. Janine thought she shouldn't say anything
in case they wouldn't let us check in. I suggested she play it by
ear. I wanted to stay in the car with the cats. Anyway, a little
later I saw the man owner take her to a room so that she could check it out. She came over to the car and said she thought it was fine and we could check in with the cats as long as they remained kenneled. We just looked at each other because we knew we weren't going to leave them all night in the kennels, but we let the owner think that. I had brought Ozium spray for odors, a disinfectant to clean the kennels and spray things around the motel room. I've seen too many programs on the supposed cleanliness of motel/hotel rooms. :) We also brought Nature's Miracle in case Lovey sprayed.

The man owner kept hanging around trying to be helpful and I just wanted him to leave us alone so that we could get the cats out of the car. We didn't want him to smell the inside of the car or the cats or he surely wouldn't have let us check in. lol We left the car running with the heat on and took everything in but the cats. We also didn't want to take a chance that one of the cats would get out the door while bringing things into the room. We got everything in and about to go get the cats in when he knocked on our door. I forget what he wanted, but he was just trying to be helpful. After we got rid of him, we ran out to the car (parked in front of our room) and got the cats into the room. Within seconds the entire room was permeated with Lovey's tom cat smell. It was intense. I asked my daughter to get a plastic bag out of the car and I let the cats out of the kennels. Lovey had a big blue tow
el and a folded sheet which were saturated with urine. I shoved those into the bag, tied it and asked Janine to put it in the trunk until we could find an outside waste container. I then disinfected his kennel, dried it out and put fresh bedding in. We also started spraying the parts of the room that the cats weren't in. They were afraid of the spray so just sprayed away from them.

Meanwhile, Lovey and Merry are still eating canned and dry. I actually fed them before I cleaned out his kennel. Merry had a litter box in her kennel and she had gone in it, but there was no smell. When they finished eating they started exploring running over both
beds, sniffing everything and just generally feeling free at last. :) We checked them both over and both appeared to be just fine. Lovey had litter stuck in his paws and we pulled out what we could without hurting him. Merry was very ladylike. It took about

Fwd: Monthly Newsletter: Using Herbs for Pet Health

2005-03-11 Thread PEC2851

In a message dated 3/10/2005 11:55:53 AM Eastern Standard Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

  Using Herbs forPet Healthby
  Dr. Larry Siegler
As the prevalence of chronic disease and immune deficiency continue to rise
in our companion animals, more and more guardians are looking for more
effective and safer methods of treating disease than are offered by
conventional medicine. Herbal remedies are a valuable tool in both
preventing and treating the issues that plague many of today's pets.
The ancestors of our companion animals had inherent instincts that guided
them in foraging for plants and herbs to aid with healing of wounds or illness
or for discomfort such as digestive troubles, as well as sources of important
vitamins, minerals and trace elements needed in their diet. Native
peoples around the world learned about the use of plants and herbs from
watching wild animals. Though our companions are rarely able to forage
for the herbs they may be in need of any longer, with education and the
guidance of a holistically trained veterinarian, we can still help them obtain
optimal health and heal from discomfort and disease through the proper use of
  herbs.
There are three main philosophies of herbal medicine; Ayurvedic Medicine,
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Western Herbalism. Ayurvedic
Medicine originated in India and the Middle East. Herbal remedies are
chosen based on an individual's metabolic type or "dosha", as well as the
symptoms or disease present. Traditional Chinese Medicine addresses the
body and healing in terms of the flow of energy or "qi" - which is the life
force of the individual. You may see references to dampness or dryness
or heat or cold involved in different conditions, as well as yin and yang when
studying Chinese herbal formulas. Western Herbalism is the youngest of
the three and has origins in the use of medicinal plants in Eruope. Like
both Ayurvedic Medicine and TCM, the body is viewed as a whole and the herbs
are used to stimulate healing from within, rather than simply suppressing
symptoms (although herbs can be used in this way).
Herbs come in a variety of forms including tinctures, capsules and tablets
administered orally, as well as tinctures and salves for topical use.
Herbs are also brewed into teas for administration both orally and
topically. Tinctures may be alcohol or glycerin based. Alcohol is
generally the best extractive, meaning that more of the beneficial properties
of the herb are removed, but glycerin tastes better so is easier to get down
an animal. Some small dogs and cats can be sensitive to alcohol, so a
glycerin base is sometimes preferred. Most herbal tinctures made for
pets will have a very small amount of alcohol, if any, and it can be
evaporated out before administration by either putting the dose into a small
shot glass and leaving it in the open air for 15-30 minutes or adding the dose
to a small amount of very hot water and then administering this dilution after
it cools. Tinctures are often preferred for cats and dogs as they tend
to be better absorbed. Some herbal formulas, however, cannot be
practically formulated in this way and are more easily dosed as capsules or
  tablets.
Herbs can be used to treat specific illnesses or dysfunctions, somewhat
similar to conventional medication; matching the diagnosis or symptoms to the
herbal treatment. An example of this would be the use of milk thistle
for detoxification of the liver - a specific herb used for a specific
purpose. Some herbs are more valuable as adaptogens - having a tonic
effect that helps stimulate the individual's intrinsic health and
vitality. Siberian ginseng is a frequently utilized adaptogen for older
or weakened animals. In many cases I will utilize both types of herbs in
treating a patient with chronic or acute illness. Adaptogens are also
frequently administered to help prevent degenerative conditions, illness or
  immune deficiencies.
Many herbal formulas are available that clearly state the intended use,
taking some of the guess work out of choosing herbal remedies for your
companion. The variety of choices however, can be confusing, so when in
doubt seek assistance. Many holistic veterinarians offer phone
consultations which can save you a lot of trial and error, lost time in the
healing process and money in the long run by helping you choose the right
remedies initially and administering proper dosages. Also keep in mind
that the source of the herbs is important. Use herbs and formulas from
reputable companies only since the potency of herbal remedies can vary
  greatly.
A few things to keep in mind when using herbal remedies:

Herbs take time to build in the system, so do not expect immediate
results. It can take from several days up to a week or more to know if

vet's office - I even took Gigner's own thermometer to the vet so that they
won't have to use theirs, and I try not to make an appointment that is late in
the day, but rather, earlier in the day so that they don't handle too many
animals before they touch Ginger. I am very protective and you just never
know!

She
alsomight be in heat already, and I am so not ready her to go through the
surgery (especially after what happened to my suzi), though I am aware of the
stress factor being heat, too.

  You
have certainly boosted Ginger's weight, Hideyo--that's
  great.
  I
know the disappointment you feel about her remaining positive. I went thru the
same thing--not only did they still come up positive, but one that had tested
  negative previously re-tested positive.
  Have
you tried deli meats? Michelle recommended that when Levi was ill, and he
enjoyed it for a couple of days.
I agree with you re the stress of FeLv cats going to
vet, with barking dogs etc. (never mind what they might pick up in terms
of illness) Are you able to consider having a housecall vet
  instead?
Sending lots of positive vibes and hugs for
  Ginger.
  love,
  Kerry

  visit

I took Ginger to the vet this
morning for check up not that something has been really wrong with her, but
since her appetite goes up and down from time to time, I thought I should just
make sure that all her organs are ok

When I first got her about 5
months ago, she was about 6 months old, but she only weighed 2 lb. But today, her weight was over 6 lb!
my little girl has grown so
  much!!

In house PCV test, her HCT value
is 32 but I also had them send it to a lab which sometimes comes lower
but my vet thought her gum and tongue are nice and pink.

  I did FeLV/FIV test since I only
did it once I had a slight hope maybe she wont be positive anymore as I
had read that about 2/3 of FeLV positive cats overcome the virus and test
  negative eventually.

But she was still positive I was
very sad, but at the same time, it really doesnt change much in terms of how
I take care of her anyway.

I felt so bad that Ginger freaked
out so much she got so scared because dogs there were barking all the
time. I hope this visit wont
have any negative effect on her well-being due to the stress she
  experienced today. She has
not eaten as much and I was a bit worried, though she did drink a whole bowl
of liver shake last night I think she gets tired of eating same thing after
a while She loved baby food for a long time, and all of sudden she stopped
  eating it. Then I tried
cooked chicken, and she liked for a while. Then, I tried smoked turkey, which she
has loved for a while, now she is tired of it for now, she has loved steak,
but looks like she is getting tired of it, too. I try salmon, sardines, mackerel cans,
too. Let me know if you have any
  suggestions.

  Please send Ginger positive energy
that her test result will come back OK
  Thank
  you.

  Del. Not a problem not
responding. I just think that it got bounced by felvtalk so wasn't sure
anybody saw it. Did you see the 3rd and last update I sent to the list
here? I sent it to the list on March 3. I just wanted to make sure
that those who were part of their lives during the trip, etc. got to hear that
they got home in good shape. I'm wondering if I should send it to the
  List again??--

I got it and replied. Maybe you're not getting all your emails? I just thought you must be busy with your new furrballs! I hope they're still doing well. I can imagine that Lovey is going to get huge now that he's neutered and being taken care of.

Hi All

Could whomever first emailed this story to the list please post it
again? I seem to have lost it and I want to send it on to all my cat
loving friends.

 Thank you.

OT: To Tonya - Lovey and Merry Home! :) - Third Act! LONG!

2005-03-11 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Tonya

No, I didn't get your reply. Before today I had only two replies
from off list, Jenny and one of the drivers on the transport. As I
replied to Del I just wanted to make sure all the people who helped
with Lovey and Merry and were interested in their welfare would get the
"rest of the story" as Paul Harvey always said on his program. :)

I am watching Lovey and Merry's diet closely. They are on Wellness
dry mostly. Lovey is almost free of his tom cat smell. Merry
continues to drink large amounts of water. Maybe it is normal for her,
but I have never seen a cat drink so much. Soon I am going to check
her blood sugar and if that is normal I will talk to my vet. Merry is
awfully young for kidney problems like CRF, but I suppose it could
happen. I sure hope not. She is getting sweeter every single day.
She is a master of silent meows when she wants something. :)

Do you want to see pictures of Lovey and Merry at home?
