sub q is definitely better than drinking-- they get more fluids, I think,

I know it is hard to give them to very small or thin cats, though.

Try an overnight soak in
Petzyme (purchased at PetsMart) or some other enzyme product that you can use to
soak your clothes.  The mistake most people make with enzyme odor removal
products is not keeping them wet long enough for the bacteria to work on the
source of the odor.  It would also help if you had a place to store your
clothes so your kitty couldn't access them.  I'm sure you hang them in a
closet but try to place underwear and other items you store in dressers one
drawer down from top and one drawer up from bottom.  That should leave you
with two drawers.  You might also try adding plastic storage boxes to your
drawers.  I have several spraying kitties who spray my dresser and the
urine seeps into the drawers.  I solved the problem the above
way.

Dr. Bronner's Lavender
soap is excellent as a laundry soap, floor wash, counter wash, body wash, almost
everything wash.  It's natural, no cancer-causing chemicals or chemical
fumes pretending to be Lavender or Rose.  A bit more expensive then Tide
but worth it for keeping chemical's out of your cat's environment.

Aloe vera gel is a good idea.  I would probably buy the gel, (aloe
only, no other additives or perfumes), at the health food store because
it would be more sanitary.  Funny, I'd have no problem putting aloe gel
direct from the plant on a sore of my own!  I used aloe gel on my
Gypsy's inflamed sores, (from IBD).  It really seemed to help speed the
healing process.

It's so wonderful that you have such faith in your vet.  I've gone
through a half a dozen looking for one I can trust since my favorite
retired a couple of years ago.

Healing vibes to you and your big boy,

  Nina,
Thank you so much.  I stayed home from work today -- I wasn't
feeling well - but mostly I was worried about my boy.  Since yesterday
he had been staying under the bed.  I put a big towel down by the bed
and laid there beside him - was up at 3am with the big lug applying
cold compresses - which he seemed to appreciate.  He just couldn't get
comfortable.  He's feeling a lot better now though.

One thing I do respect about my vet is that he is an excellent
surgeon.  He did a 2 hour hip reconstruction on my parent's kitty (a
stray who came to me that they adopted)...he did an amazing job.  He
was so exhausted after that surgery - he had to go home.  Apparently
the poor kitty had been injured by a car or a fall well before they got
him and the little guy was in bad shape.  His back leg wasn't even in
the socket because he really didn't have a proper hip socket.  Now Mr.
Steve is the most gorgeous, healthy guy you've ever seen and doesn't
even have a limp.  Dr. Reid made him a hip joint.  His spay and neuter
surgeries are so far above the work you normally see - very tight and
concise incisions/stitches that heal beautifully.  He operated on Mama
Kitty too when she had a very bad abscess from a bite before she
transitioned to indoor living.  He truly is talented - which is rare
considering that he is a general practitioner out in the county and not
the least bit flashy or arrogant.  Even so - if there is any way we can
avoid surgery for Antonio - we will.  It will only be a last resort.

Antonio is so smart -- he knows he has a drippy ugly bottom and
would not sit down until I got him some special towels LOL I am
probably the worst housekeeper on the planet - but he is so fastidious
and concerned that he wouldn't get on the bed until I put towels down
for him - and wouldn't sit in his favorite places in the den until I
had his special towels all around.  He knows they are just for him and
nobody else bothers them.

I've been debating using aloe vera gel on him - I must have half
a dozen plants...but since he is comfortable now, I just don't want to
apply anything that might get his backside angry again.

Sorry this is so long - I really appreciate you guys being there.

Aloe vera, is it poisonous? (was Update on Antonio)

2006-11-15 Thread Nina

Okay, while I was reading about aloes and aloe vera gel I did start to
remember something about the skin of the plant being toxic, (not the
gel from the inside).  I found this post from a Holisticat archive.
I'm still confused after reading it, but I thought I'd pass it along
while I look for clearer answers:

ALOE(part used: leaf gel) vera vs ALOES (parts
used: dried leaf juice---the
following info was taken from the book "Herbal Medicines: A Guide for
Health-Care
Professionals", by Newhall, Anderson, and Phillipson; hardcover, 296
pages,
$77, available through the American Botanical Council 1-800-373-7105)

Aloe vera (Aloe vera and aloes are often
confused with each other) refers
to the mucilaginous tissue located in the leaf of Aloe vera or related
Aloe species. However, many documented studies for Aloe vera have
utilised
homogenised leaf extracts which therefore combine aloe vera with aloes,
the laxative preparation obtained from the bitter, yellow juice also
found
in the leaf. Commercial "aloin" is a concentrated form of aloes.

Aloe vera is obtained from the mucilaginous
tissue in the center of
the Aloe vera leaf and consists mainly of polysacharides and lipids. It
should not be confused with aloes, which is obtained by evaporation of
water from the bitter yellow juice that is drained from the leaf.Unlike
aloes, aloe vera does not contain any anthraquinone compounds and does
not therefore, exert any laxative action.

Hypoglycemic activity has been documented for
an aloe vera extract,
although it is unclear whether this is associated with the true aloe
vera
gel or the aloes extract.

The external application of aloe vera gel
during pregnancy is not thought
to be any cause for concern. However, products stated to contain aloe
extracts
or aloe vera may well contain gastrointestinal stimulant anthraquinone
components that are well recognized as the active constituents in
aloes(laxative).
As such, ingestion of such preparations during pregnancy and lactation
should be avoided.

ALOES

...recommended for the treatment of atonic constipation and suppressed
menstruation.

In human studies: the purgative action of the
anthraquinone glycosides
is well recognized, although aloes is reported to be more potent than
both
senna and cascara. An aloes extract in doses too small to cause
abdominal
cramps or diarrhea had a significant hypoglycemic effect in 5
non-insulin-dependant
diabetics.(Ghannam N et al. The antidiabetic activity of aloes:
preliminary
and experimental observations. Hormone Res 1986; 24:288-94)

Aloes is a potent purgative that may cause
abdominal pains, gastro-intestinal
irritation leading to pelvic congestion and in large doses, may result
in nephritis, bloody diarrhea, and hemorrhagic gastritis.

The drastic purgative action of aloes
contra-indicates its use in individuals
with hemorrhoids and existing kidney disease. In common with all
purgatives,
aloes should not be given to patients with intestinal obstruction,
abdominal
pain, nausea, or vomiting. Aloes colors alkaline urine red. Aloes is an
abortifacient and affects the menstrual cycle.

Brenda,
I am so sorry for Schumacher's passing, as well as the others.  This is just unfair after all you went through with Miss Kitty and her babies.  I think of them often and remind myself to appreciate each moment I have with my positive Will.  Your dear Schumacher reminds me to appreciate each day with my negs. as a gift as well.  Thank you.  I hope that your other fur-babies are strong and well.

Anyway, our FIV+ Schumacher as gone to Rainbow Bridge today.  About 6 weeks ago he went to the vet because he was a little depressed and wasn't eating well.  The bloodwork showed kidney problems (elevated BUN & creatinine) and below normal PCV.  He spent 5 days in the hospital and the vet pulled him through.  He's been on prednisolone, cyproheptadine, Pepsid AC, Procrit & sub-Q fluids.  Over the weekend, he just took a nose dive and wouldn't eat or drink anything.  He was drooling and gagging at the sight of any food.

I took him back to the vet this morning and she didn't think anythig else could be done.  His anemia appeared to be gone, but he was just very depressed and vocalizing (normally quiet) alot when I tried to hold him.  He had clearly had enough of the needles & pills.  The vet recommend PTS and I decided it was the best thing.

He was a very loving orange tabby with a little "cat"titude on the side and was my husband's favorite.  This is never easy and it's already been a rough year.  We've lost 2 others since June.  Please add our Schumacher to the CLS as a non-positive.

Re: Aloe vera, is it poisonous? (was Update on Antonio)

2006-11-15 Thread G. Lane
Re Aloe Vera - it has some great healing
properties. There's a part of the plant that's
toxic, but part of it is not. In general, I think
that aloe juice is from the healing part of the
plant, not the membrane that is or can be
toxic. I looked it up a few years ago and found
a nice diagram, can't find it now though.

It's UNFORTUNATE that the web sites that label it
as "poison" or "not poison" don't go into more detail.

For example, I use Georges Aloe vera juice
routinely with cats, it's not poison, and has had
some good effects on mouth problems for example,
my Lucy had mouth inflammation and my acupuncture
vet recommended it - and it worked great.

Also, acemanan is based on Aloe - go figure - this is from Wikipedia:
"Many of Aloe vera's beneficial properties are
attributed to
mucopolysaccharides
present in the inner gel of the leaf, especially
acemannan
(acetylated mannans). An injectable form of
acemannan manufactured and marketed by Carrington
Laboratories as Acemannan Immunostimulant™ has
been approved in the USA for treatment of
fibrosarcoma
(a type of
cancer)
in dogs and cats after clinical trials. It has
not been approved for use by humans, and although
it is not a drug its sale is controlled and it
can only be obtained through a veterinary doctor."

A site called
http://www.1st-aloe-vera.com/aloe-vera-currenthistory.htm
- lists these significant dates and events:
"1991 - Ian R. Tizard, PhD, of Texas A&M,
reported in the Journal of Molecular Biotherapy,
that Aloe mannose was highly effective against
feline leukemia and soft tissue cancer in cats and dogs.

1992 - Dr. James Duke, United States Department
of Agriculture, approved the use of Aloe mannose
as a treatment of soft tissue cancer in animals and feline leukemia."

Aloe is not to be written off - it has some great healing properties.

Aloe vera (Aloe vera and aloes are often
confused with each other) refers to the
mucilaginous tissue located in the leaf of Aloe
vera or related Aloe species. However, many
documented studies for Aloe vera have utilised
homogenised leaf extracts which therefore
combine aloe vera with aloes, the laxative
preparation obtained from the bitter, yellow
juice also found in the leaf. Commercial "aloin"
is a concentrated form of aloes.

Aloe vera is obtained from the mucilaginous
tissue in the center of the Aloe vera leaf and
consists mainly of polysacharides and lipids. It
should not be confused with aloes, which is
obtained by evaporation of water from the bitter
yellow juice that is drained from the
leaf.Unlike aloes, aloe vera does not contain
any anthraquinone compounds and does not therefore, exert any laxative action.

Hypoglycemic activity has been documented for an
aloe vera extract, although it is unclear
whether this is associated with the true aloe vera gel or the aloes extract.

The external application of aloe vera gel during
pregnancy is not thought to be any cause for
concern. However, products stated to contain
aloe extracts or aloe vera may well contain
gastrointestinal stimulant anthraquinone
components that are well recognized as the
active constituents in aloes(laxative). As such,
ingestion of such preparations during pregnancy
and lactation should be avoided.

In human studies: the purgative action of the

is much better!!  Thank you all for your prayers, good vibes and input.

He has now had two shots of Epogen.  Last night he came into
the kitchen to drink water with the other kids rather than my taking a

he spent the night.   This morning I took him to the litterbox as I
have been doiing and he jumped right out - which tells me that he is
going on his own now.  Also, for the first time in almost a week I
didn't have to syringe-feed him.  He ate Fancy Feast on his own.    My
vet says his gums look better - I wasn't sure.    We are now doing a
"hide and watch" - and wait and see if he continues to feel better and
if his gums pinken some more.  We may go to an Epogen shot once per
week.   I am very encouraged!

Re: Moses tested FeLv+ and FeLv- I'm confused!

2006-11-15 Thread Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn

PCR is unreliable and a waste of
money.

You must wait 120 days to be sure
of ANY test result by ANY means, due to the nature of the virus:

Cats will test positive around 30 days post-exposure on the ELISA test. The
pathogenesis of FeLV can take one of three paths. Cats can be transiently
infected and then clear the virus around 12–16 weeks after exposure (meaning
they can test positive, and then "turn" negative after around 90-120 days).
They can also develop a latent infection, in which case both the ELISA FeLV Test
and IFA test will be negative. Latently infected cats can harbor the virus in
their bone marrow for years with no clinical signs. Most latently infected cats
can eventually clear the infection, but in a small percentage, the virus can
reactivate and clinical FeLV can occur later in life. This reactivation of
latent virus explains why a nine-year-old cat that has tested negative and lived
indoors alone may suddenly become ill and test positive for FeLV. Cats can also
be persistently infected, clinical or nonclinical, but these cats may be
shedding virus.

It was discussed here about 3 years

that's used to treat FELV it's carefully extracted from the gel (the inner
parts of the leaves), without any traces of the skin.

If anyone is worried about a small cat scratching up their furniture and
would like to try these, please e-mail me and I'll mail them to you.
They are size small, colored black.

I don't need these. Dixie and I are working things out. I just wanted you to
know how wonderful it is that you are remembering Scooter in such a
constructive way. I found comfort in putting my friends meds and special food
in my vets' Good Samaritan box and toys elsewhere. The lovely friends continue
giving after they leave this world.

Blessings to you for just caring.

Great cat. Hard-working rescuer! Please contact me directly if you can help!
Thanks.

Denise, I've spent over $900 on Chatsworth. He had no skin on the back of
his forearms. I went to 3 vets before I found someone that knew how to close
the wounds. He now tested positive for FeLV and FIV. He is super, super
sweet, but I have never had to find a home for FeLV cat yet alone one
that had FIV too? We found homes for two toms that were FIV+ very quickly.
It surprised me because I had a beautiful long haired Calico with FIV that
took me a year to find a home for. This double whammy will be terribly hard.
Any suggestions?

PCR is unreliable and a waste of money.

You must wait 120 days to be sure of ANY test result by ANY means, due to the
nature of the virus:

Cats will test positive around 30 days post-exposure on the ELISA test. The
pathogenesis of FeLV can take one of three paths. Cats can be transiently
infected and then clear the virus around 12–16 weeks after exposure (meaning
they can test positive, and then "turn" negative after around 90-120 days).
They can also develop a latent infection, in which case both the ELISA FeLV
Test and IFA test will be negative. Latently infected cats can harbor the virus
in their bone marrow for years with no clinical signs. Most latently infected
cats can eventually clear the infection, but in a small percentage, the virus
can reactivate and clinical FeLV can occur later in life. This reactivation of
latent virus explains why a nine-year-old cat that has tested negative and
lived indoors alone may suddenly become ill and test positive for FeLV. Cats
can also be persistently infected, clinical or nonclinical, but these cats may
be shedding virus.

Re: Moses tested FeLv+ and FeLv- I'm confused!

2006-11-15 Thread Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn
Depends on the lab and you never know WHAT lab your vet is going to send
it to.

Let me put it this way, a very valid study was done on the PCR test for FIV
(which, granted is different from FELV), and they tested several cats, some
who were positive, some were negative, and they threw in some DOG BLOOD,
just as a control. The PCR found FELINE FIV in the DOG blood.

To me, that's pretty much the definition of unreliable.

http://www.vin.com/mainpub/feline/aafpfelvdx.htm states:
16. Other confirmatory tests, such as methodologies utilizing polymerase
chain reaction (PCR), may be useful but are currently unvalidated. Although
PCR offers a promising approach to FeLV testing, currently neither
production of PCR reagents (primers) nor testing protocols is standardized
or consistent.

Please tell your friend Renee her kitty Emily is in my thoughts and prayers.
Give her a hug for me and tell her we are here for her if needed.
This is sad. My heart is breaking for her. I love Maine coons too.
My daughter's kitty was a Maine Coon mix that recently died. He was an
awesome boy. Love his size!
Yes, I agree she should join the group for at least support anyway.

The first link I sent was from a vets website and my vet has told me
the same thing. Like anything it may not harm every cat the first time
it's used but my thinking is if it could be poisonous it isn't worth the
risk to me. I am going to ask my vet about it again, it is on some
lists and not on others.

http://dcn.davis.ca.us/vme/DrSue/

I'll do some research on it, but I've never heard that. In fact, I
heard the opposite, that it was safe for them to ingest. I can tell
you that it didn't hurt Gypsy.

Thanks Phaewryn, she will definitley not be forgotten. My boyfriend has this
silly voice and pout that he does that he said is how she used to talk to
him,and she really had a filthy mouth.lol Of course she talked to him alot when
he picked her up from the clinic. It always makes me laugh when he goes into
Maizee mode. :)

The first anniversary is always SO hard, my thoughts go out to you and your
sweet Maizee Grace, may this upcoming year bring you only happy memories of
her! She will never be forgotten here.

Thank you, Phaewryn. I think that is a good practice. He's very playful
tonight and in good spirits. (He just jumped up on the keyboard) I can't help
but think he's feeling pretty good...but to look at his backside still makes me
wince. I do worry that he might build up a tolerance if I give it too often
such that if he does have to have surgery, the demerol might not be as
effective. I promise though - if he seemed at all in pain I'd be getting the
vet out of bed. It sounds like you have an excellent veterinarian.

You didn't mention your vet upping his pain meds... I do hope he's getting
enough pain meds! MY vet wouldn't even let Tang leave the hospital until his
butt inflammation went down to almost normal, due to wanting to be really
consistent with the pain meds.

need prayers

2006-11-15 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
Hi, everyone, I have a couple of kitties who are not feeling too well
and I need you to send them positive energy and white beam of light -
when you lose more than one kitties to FIP.. you become so paranoid..
when they sneeze, run fever.. you think they have FIP - and I am so
tired of being fearful of this disease - my older boy Rikki has lot lots
of weight and he is anemic and I am a bit freaking out, and my ayumi has
mouth sore and can't really eat and lost lots of weight and am not sure
whether I should do a dental for her for certain conditions that she is
in right now.. and my new rescued boy Toni, has had sneeze and running
fever today - and am a little bit paranoid and worried.

Please pray all of the babies are just going to be fine.
