[Felvtalk] FelV incubation period

2011-02-20 Thread Lorrie
We recently rescued a half starved female cat who was outside in
bitterly cold weather and being chased by dogs! She is now in the
large isolation room at my private shelter where she is gaining
weight and looks just great. I want to get her shots, and have her
tested for FelV, but wondered how long the incubation period is for
FelV. If she was exposed to FelV I think I need to wait about 6 weeks
til it would show up in the Elisa test, but I'm not sure...
Does anyone in the group know?

Re: [Felvtalk] FelV incubation period

2011-02-20 Thread Natalie
I know that it is suggested that after a cat is first tested for FIV/FeLV,
it should be done again in 3 months. Unfortunately, that's something that
most rescues cannot afford to do...not just cost, but keeping a cat isolated
for three months. It also depends on when a cat might have been exposed. We
had a cat for over 10 years, she had been tested when first trapped - she
had 6 kittens. All but one kitten was adopted (we kept last one, a huge
Maine Coon look -mom was tiny short-hair) - anfd ALL cats when tested after
we found out about Shana, were negative. I found over the years that all
the FIV+ moms NEVER had kittens that were positive. Sadly, it's a lot
different with FeLV. Shana (named after our dog), didn't like cats a lot -
she loved our big dog. When he died, she became sick-looking; after being
checked out, we found that she was FIV+we had no other FIV+ cats that
could have infected her, besides, they would have been kept separated from
other healthy ones. Shana could have been just exposed at the time of her
blood tests, and in her case, waiting 3 months for re-checking would have
been ideal. But all was well, she didn't infect anyoneand she was one
of our own because no one wanted to adopt an adult cat.

[Felvtalk] Isaac

2011-02-20 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Isaac would have been 3 years young on 4.14. He tested positive along with 4
others of my inner circle of seven on 3.1.2010. I did not test further but put
efforts into food and supplements.

Isaac was big (not fat) black, neutered and active and appeared healthy and
aggravated Scrumptious assertively. This group lived an indoor-outdoor life in
the rural Carolina Piedmont.

Tuesday morning he did not eat. His breath was horrendous. He liked to eat -
- I used to joke with him that he and I both needed to spend time on the
treadmill. That night he was not there nor on Wednesday nor Thursday morning
though I searched and called. Thursday night he answered. He could not move
and his pupils were dilated and fixed. He did not look as if he had been
attacked by dogs or coyotes.

I took him the 14 miles home and hydrated him orally during the night. He got
up to walk several times during the late night morning but would walk 3 steps
and wobble and fall down; he would cry out while sleeping with me or when I
moved him but I did not know what the matter was. Conscious but not responsive
to me. (the crying out walking with falling down reminiscent of Torie Rose -
- in her last earthly night. She was the first and original of this inner
circle of 8 who was euthanized 2.28.2010). I made an appointment with a vet
for Friday. He gave fluids - - thought Isaac's teeth and forehead spoke of
liver failure, said his lungs were clear and heart sounded good though a little
fast. The plan was to do fluids over the weekend and reassess early in the
week. Vet said could be leukemia. could be poison. didn't know.

I unintentionally killed him Friday night and will say no more about that.
That is a heavy load.

To have him suddenly in major distress was unimaginable. He was only a
nanometer beyond Scrumptious in closeness to me. He and Shallie Marie appeared
to be the healthiest. This is the last thing I would have expected.

Thank you for hearing my story.

any wisdom or insights will be appreciated.

Blessings

[Felvtalk] Leona Jean Yahmuna

2011-02-20 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Leona Jean is the FIV female who came to my patio on Thanksgiving Day. I have
written of her before and was graciously advised to check out the FIV group.

Her upper respiratory symptoms are back - - the worst since she presented.
Leona Jean is now having a little goop in the corners of her eyes and the
mucous is beginning to string. She has been on about four different
antibiotics. The vet said on the last visit that her lungs sounded clear.
Does that mean nose sinuses are where the infection is? We just finished
the 200 mg azithromycin the vet put her on last time. Leona Jean's respiratory
symptoms diminish only somewhat but really don't even come close to clearing.

The vet had advised to use the azithromycin daily and then on alternate days.
Humidity and hydrating with juice don't seem to help like they did before. She
won't drink homemade chicken broth either.

comments?

I wouldn't fight at all if someone knew of a superb FIV home for her. My own
local inquires have come up empty. She is sweet, sleeps with me, maybe has a
megacolon. We are in the Piedmont of NC.

Thank you.

Re: [Felvtalk] Leona Jean Yahmuna

2011-02-20 Thread katskat1
Megan,

I am in Ohio so can't help you that way but would strongly recommend
you get Leona Jean on L-Lysine. I cannot tell you exactly what it is
or how it does what it appears to do but I am sure some of the others
can fill you in.

I have two cats that are FIV positive and have had them on L-Lysine
for well over a year. After a few weeks any recurrence of their upper
respiratory symptoms was negligible and neither of them has had a
recurrence at all in many months. Both are fat and sassy, with clear
eyes and noses. No sneezing, rattling, etc. It apparently helps
bolster their immune system and while I in no way think it is a
miracle or the end-all for this nasty disease, I think it is of great
value.

Go on line and look for it or go to a local health food store. If
your cat is picky or hard to pill or medicate I suggest the soft
treats. A bit more expensive but great for fickle cats. My two will
fight over the things and come running when I rattle the container
they are in.

[Felvtalk] Purrayers for our Rosie

2011-02-20 Thread Alice Flowers
We thought she was the survivor-She is the last of the litter of 5 kittens we
caught in Oct 2008. Her 4 brothers passed in 2009, a month apart. She made it
to
2 years, now 2 1/2tonight I felt a lump on the left side of her neck.
I
am hoping our vet is open tomorrow. She is not showing any pain-I checked her
neck and throat because she gagged a little tonight, but nothing came up. She
had tonsillitis in January and was on Zithromax-she came out of that just fine.
I am dreading this-we just lost Murphy in October from Lymphoma. Rosie was so
lonely when he passed-she became depressed-slept all of the time, we were so
worried-she checked out fine, we had her blood work done-all ok. We ended up
adopting 2 negative kitties-a male that was 6-7 months old and a female that is
9-10 months old. The rescue vaccinated each one twice for FeLV and kept them an
extra month-their vet thought they would be fine since they were pretty mature
and were already negative. She has been running and playing again and we
thought
all was well in the world. I hope this lump isn't Lymphoma. Alice...owned by
Rosie, Sachi and Miso!!

Hi Michael,

The problem is that Google maps says it is 1,796 miles and probably at least
1,000 of that is before they get to Nevada. That's why I was looking for
someone experienced in setting up transports, which I am not. I have
someone to drive the first out of what, 18-30ish legs? I haven't heard from
the adopter since all the excitement of getting them rescued from the
shelter (literally HOURS before death) so she may have found another option.
Pilots and Paws is good for short trips (300 miles or so) and we have a
wonderful paid transport company in Austin (they went and got 2 of our cats
after the adopters had a baby and decided the baby was allergic - in New
York State). They are not cheap but do sometimes offer cheaper rates for
rescue if they are going that way anyway.
