test results your interpretation/your advice

2007-07-31 Thread Susan Franklin
My baby boy, Gunnar, will celebrate his first anniversary with his two sisters,
Kelly (17) and Meagan (8) and his better than a Dad Ricky on August 2.

Can you help me interpret his initial test results from one year ago - we
have decided that through our faith and prayers that he has thrown the virus
(or never had it) and will NOT retest him (it doesn't matter, we love him).

  But...his initial test results were:

  Test FeLV Elisa
  Results Positive
  Reference Range Negative
  Units Antigen

  Test FIV Elisa
  Results Negative
  Reference Range Negative
  Units Elisa

Can someone, in plain English, explain these FELV results, please. Your
assistance in this is much appreciated.

For the year that I have been a part of this list and reading your advice and
stories, I TRUST YOU MORE THAN ANY VET THAT I COULD SPEAK WITH. You are brave
people who sometimes take the worse and make it better, who through the worse
adversity stand tall and proud and roll with the punches, who adopt kits who
wouldn't normally be saved or given a home - I SAY MY PRAYERS AND GIVE MY
THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU. In my hours of need, each of you and your
words were there for me, and my family, giving us faith, giving us strength and
giving us the best advice on Earth. I WANT TO THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU
(especially Catatonya) FOR YOUR HOPE AND GUIDANCE. MAY GOD BLESS EACH AND
EVERY ONE OF YOU.

As for me and family family of Ricky, me (Sissy), Kelly (17), Meagan (8)
and Gunnar (2), thank you all from the bottom of each of our hearts. When it
was needed, you truly saved the day. Gunnar is now part of the family because
we were given the hope that he could safely live with two negative Sisters. I
don't know what we would do without him - I also thank God that He made it
impossible to adopt Gunnar out - I now get to keep him for myself.

Thanks for your help. Thank you for EVERYTHING. You guys are God's gift!
Take care and keep the faith.

Re: Info about IFA and Elissa Test

2006-09-27 Thread Susan Franklin
Guys, is this true??? Pos Elisa and Neg IFA is bad?? What's everyone
opinion regarding what what Cracker's vet said??

Thanks!!!

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/26/06 5:17:29 PM
I forgot to mention something important. My vet had told me that when a
cat
is positive on Elissa test and then has a Positive IFA that the two
positive
results from the two tests is better then having a POS Elissa and a
NEG
IFA.He said when Elissa is POS and IFA is NEG sometimes the virus is
hiding in
bone marrow. He said that he believes that a cat has a better chance
of
throwing off virus if both tests are POS considering they arent a
false/pos. He said
best to recheck in 6 months and see what tests say. But he did warn me
that
just because Crackers is very healthy now DOES NOT mean he will always
be
that way and he may keep the virus permantly! But as mommies/daddies we
NEVER
give up hope. The one thing he said that made me down a little was that
he
suggests that I keep Crackers my only pet. I am aching for a kitten or
2 or 3. I
miss watching Crackers having a play buddy. He loved Pokies. He said
after
the 2nd testing in March we can discuss that topic. I know most of you
have
multi/ cats POS and NEG. Dr. said if I was too adopt another POS Cat or
 healthy
one Crackers now has a risk factor. So right now new babies is on the
back
burner. I just have to keep looking at all your great sites and
Crackers loves
sitting on my lap looking and the Kittys! Then we have our other
babies:)
much love and great thoughts to all

P.S. sorry so long

Your thoughts please.

Hi Ioana,

Welcome to the group. My kitties are on Evo too, and
their poop stinks, but I don't know whose doesn't.
LOL. I have heard people say that they don't like the
Innova because it makes the kitty poop smell worse,
but that hasn't been the case for mine as far as I can
tell. Lola might have something else going on
however. Maybe some parasites; I don't know. If
that's the case, someone here will know. You might
re-post with 'stinky poop question' as your subject
line to make sure someone with that info. reads the

be an attention getter. lol. Good luck!

Re: Traveling with a cat

2006-09-25 Thread Susan Franklin
I would just be sure the cage was in the least noisy area of the moving
vehicle - away from the motor/engine and anything that makes noise.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/25/06 2:24:39 PM
that sounds like an elegant solution - you'll be able to cover the cage
with a mommy or daddy smelling blanket so she'll have a safe cave and
she'll get some great sight-seeing:)

most of the time we have to board her which I hate. I
worry about her the whole time and she doesn't eat
good there. The vet leaves at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and
11:30 a.m. on Saturday. If anything happend to her

stay in inside the camper. I will not let her outside

a cage if I boarded her. She would feel better being

I have ten cats, four in the house, and six outside.
Of the six outside, two live in the garage full time.
Three come and go; they have other families to attend
to as well. ;) And one doesn't like other cats, so

We have 3 cats: 2 negatives and one pos. The pos just came to us last
week so we're still novices and learning. But as far as integration
goes, we didn't really do anything special. We really didn't have to
since we aren't worried about stressing our healthy cats, and Scooter
seems comfortable here so there's not a problem in keeping him away from
the others and gradually introducing him into the household. One cat
(the oldest) was chosen by me, while the other two were strays that
picked us probably because they knew they would be cared for. When
Karma came to the house about 7 years ago, she and Montana hissed at
each other awhile but learned to tolerate one another. They've never
gotten friendly enough to sleep curled together or groom each other, and
on some (rare) occasions one will take a swipe at the other in passing.
Now that we have a third, we integrated him by letting him in the house
(no cages) and so far, except for some hissing at the food bowls, it's
been fine. Scooter (FeLV+) can tell that he's third in the hierarchy
and walks carefully when Karma is in the house but otherwise seems
perfectly comfortable. The negatives can come and go using the cat
door, so they aren't all three in the house together 24/7 which probably
helps keep the peace.

Re: Smokey

2006-09-21 Thread Susan Franklin
My Sister had two dogs, but I would think this would apply equally to
cats.

If a cat/dog can't smell it's food, it probably won't eat it.
Therefore, if your cat/dog has a cold/stuffed nose or allergies with
stuffiness, there's always a possibly of a decline in the interest of
food.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/21/06 1:05:13 PM
Cindy, I totally understand. I am so sensitive to eating habits,
because to
me it's the first sign of bigger things. My Satch has not approached
his
food with the gusto that he did before he got this cold. He's fine -
he
eats, but it's over a longer period and he'll leave a bite in the
bowl,
where before, no way. He'd stop and eat bits of dirt, buttons, spots
on the
carpet on the way to his bowl for breakfast and dinner, inhale it, lick
it
clean to make sure, inspect the area around the bowl, and try to eat
everything nailed down and not on his way back to me to tell me that
he
could handle a helping of seconds. This cat would have been rounder
than he
is long if given his druthers. So now, even though he's eating okay -
it's
not his normal and I don't like it. I'm hoping that with the
identification
and treatment of the cough source that my ravenous beast will be
plaguing me
again.

Anyway, Wysong is good, Solid Gold, Felidae, Innova Evo (which just
came out
with the wet food a few months ago), Max Cat, Merrill - these are all
good
foods and I'm sure that there are more. Fancy Feast actually isn't a
bad
one either. Satch loves his Innova kibble first, used to love my raw
food
(now leaves some uneaten) second, and then last is canned food. He
always
has gone in strong, but loses taste for it. So your Smokey could be
the
same. Only using it as a back up and then variety is my tactic. Raw
or
cooked chicken (depending on your comfort level) is usually a favorite
with
most cats (I usually cut off a bit of whatever meat I'm making for
myself if
there aren't spices involved to give to Satch).

Good luck, they can be so picky.

Leslie

This seems to be a problem. My three cats will eat Fancy Feast - but
only certain limited flavors. They really don't care for the new

Re: Smokey and food

2006-09-21 Thread Susan Franklin
What are the votes on Wellness canned??? My little fussies don't like
it. I bought every flavor - I wonder if they don't like the texture, as
it seems creamier than Fancy Feast. They will eat the Wellness dry,
though, so they're at least getting some very nutritious into their
systems.

I want them to have good quality food, no matter the cost, but they
seem to like Fancy Feast roasted chicken, chunky chicken, fish shrimp
and beef and chicken.

Mine don't eat it; mine eat Evo. I just know others
here have fed it to their furbabies, and it's supposed
to be good quality food.

If you don't mind I'm going to forward this to the list. We have to
eat veterinary diet food here because I have a cat that has crystals. I
would certainly NOT worry about keeping these cats together. It is
nearly impossible for an adult vaccinated cat to catch leukemia. Also,
I let my vaccines lapse all the time and that hasn't made a difference
either.

Maybe you can join the list if you like. It is a wonderful list and

I am the one that found the cat and brought her in the house. I

up with the vaccines. The other one, which is 2 years old, had the
vaccine and the booster in July 2004. I didn't do any vaccine in 2005
because I gave up on chasing her to take her to the vet. I did
vaccinate her now in July 2006, but nobody gave me an answer if I have
to give her a booster. What is your personal opinion? Lola, the
positive one, is doing fine for the moment. She's gaining weight. For
a medium cat she's 8.6 lbs. She would just eat all the time. I could
not keep them separated because I didn't want to stress them and knowing
that stress is an important factor in their health. What food do you
feed your positive cats? My cats are used just with dry food. Do you
know any affordable brand that is recommended?

Hi Elizabeth.

If both your other cats are negative, and especially if they are
vaccinatedthere is very, very little chance your cats would contract
the disease. I have had mixed positives and negatives for years and
have never had anyone transfer the disease to any of my negatives. I'm
on a list (and have been for over 10 years) of hundreds of people that
mix with NO PROBLEM. I would be glad to send your email to the list for
some reassurance if you are interested. There is really no reason you
can't keep this cat. If I weren't over full I would offer myself. If
you want more info. please feel free to contact me. If your negative
cats are NOT vaccinated you could vaccinate them and then safely
integrate. I have brought in strays after having had only their first
shot and not even a booster yet and had no problems.

neutering would significantly address the issue. it's not just about
mating, it's about mating/territorial behavior which, as i understand

spraying is one such behaviors.

Our FELV+ has developed a very bad habit of spraying around the
house.
Especially in shoes. He's also started urinating at our bedroom doors

when we shut them to go to bed.

He's intact because I don't believe in Neutering. (He's kept away
from
other cats, so please don't make that a huge issue.)

I believe he might be happier in a home where he can socialize. Is
there
anyone on here who can take him? You can neuter him once he's yours.

My other cat is very old FIV+ with multiple problems and they don't
get
along. He's feeling very left out, and I'm at the end of my rope with
him.

Any ideas to calm his nerves, or anyone who wants a beautiful 30lb
white
 cat?

Thank you thank you thank you.

So you think TWO WEEKS after the last booster and Gunnar can join the

You guys, as I've said before, are FANTASTIC. Whenever I get down

optimistic, truthful and knowledgeable answer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you I will reschedule Gunnar's
appointment for 120 days from August 3. Instead of re-testing with the
ELISA, I will have the IFA test done. That is correct??

And if, God forbid, the IFA is positive after 120 days, how many more
days would you recommend I wait before I retest again??

And are you guys okay with mixing?? My girls are 16 and almost 8.
Gunnar is 1-1/2 or 2. The girls are in the process of being
vaccinated.
I'm sure they won't be grooming each other, so all I need to do is
keep
the litter box clean and worry about the food/water bowls. I can pick
up breakfast/lunch/dinner dishes immediately after meals, but what's
the
best route to take regarding the water bowl? And I guess I would clean
the litter box in the morning and when I get home each night from work.

Does this sound like a safe plan? Any other suggestions would be
appreciated.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your advice and
words of wisdom. You've made a nervous sister to three cats a more
calmer person. Like I told our vet, who said don't count on it when
I told her we were literally praying to throw the virus, I trust and
believe more in what I read on this site than I would the vet's office.

You guys have been there, done that. And you've got love, which is

God bless all of you and your kitties!!

retest using the IFA at a minimum of 90 days--i go for 120 days since
most
times it takes between three and four months to clear the virus--so
unless
you are absolutely sure that he couldn't have been in contact with an
infected cat that entire amount, better to wait.

statistically, 70% of those originally tested positive on the ELISA
will
test negative on the IFA--if you do not test too soon. as belinda
says,
even
if an IFA is positive after 90-120 days, it's still not a
definite--the
virus can still clear itself.

the ELISA is about 100 times more sensitive than the IFA- but
not as specific- which accounts for the high % of false positives.
The
ELISA detects soluble (circulating) P27 antigen while the IFA
detects
P27
antigen in nucleated cells, neutrophils and platelets, or in bone
marrow
 cells.

IFAs depend upon advanced stages of infection to detect the presence
of
antigen and thus will not usually pick up early infections or
sequestered
infections. The increased sensitivity of the ELISA allows the
detection of
early infections, transient infections, and sequestered infections
that may
not be picked up by the IFA.

Neither the ELISA nor IFA will not detect viral latency, because
during
viral latency P27 antigen is not being produced.

Good news, good news, I have good news!

My vet gave the okay yesterday on bringing a new cat home - he said
that
Satch wasn't contagious and prescribed another symptomatic medecine for
his
cough. So I ran tout suite to the humane society and brought home the
first
leukemia kitten (sister to Azrael) whom I've name Beatrix. I'll
reattach
the link to her on the humane society page, but they didn't put up a
new
picture and that one is probably 6 weeks old. So she's much bigger,
but the
description holds true.

I'm keeping my paws firmly crossed that her week quarantine develops no
new
URI's in her and that Satch's cough goes away completely even if he's
not
contagious. These two are going to LOVE each other. She is everywhere
and
she bites my nose, just like Satch does. (hopefully, they'll begin
biting
each other's noses and leave mine out of it!) She's fabulous and I'm
so
excited.

Please cross your paws that they can be introduced in a week and that
nothing delays the meeting!

My first instinct was to say, first own cat, then after a while,
Kitty.
BUT. Then I thought of my own move, when Gail and I combined our
 respective
households -- me with Missy, Luc, and at that time Phoebe, and her
with
Tribble and at that time Kitty. We hadn't introduced them all to
each
other, even though we lived a hallway away in our apartment
building.
It
just didn't seem like a good idea. When we moved, we weren't too
worried
about the females, who were all sort of loners and wouldn't have
 territorial
issues. We were worried about our two big Alphas, especially
because
Tribble especially is so confrontational. But when we let them out
of
the
carriers and they saw each other, it was literally like:
 (nose touch) Dude!
 (ass sniff) Dude!
No territorial stuff at all. (It probably helped, in the long run,
that
this house has 11 rooms and they wouldn't have to see each other at
all if
they didn't want to, but they didn't know that then.) So I'm
wondering
 if,
since there will be big changes for both cats anyway, it would be
fine
to
introduce them to the new place at the same time, and maybe there
wouldn't
be territory wars. I don't know. Might be completely dependent on
the
cats' personalities, whether the original cat NEEDS to be Alpha?

Re: timing on FeLV+ test

2006-09-12 Thread Susan Franklin
That is very true. Thank you.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/11/06 5:07:01 PM
One thing I always consider with testing -- the tests, the trip to a
vet and drawing of blood, is really stressful for the cat. So if you
have even a single positive ELISA test, go with the IFA next time. The
less the cat needs to be tested, the better.

TenHouseCats [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i'd definitely go for
the IFA instead of the elissa--the false positive rate is just too high

long it can take to clear on the IFA--i'd seen a cite of up to 8 months
from exposure, tho that one no longer appears where i saw it. belinda
says it was a year. part of the issue is that, if after all that time,
the cats is still positive, does it really matter? for keeping on eye on
things, yes, but if the kitty's been in your family that long, it's not
likely that his status will really make much difference in whether he
stays, is it?

others will have more info re: mixing positives with negatives,
and/or mixing unvaccinated negatives with positives. personally, i would
vaccinate my negatives and mix with no problem, but there's an ongoing
debate about the safety of vaccinations that each individual needs to
weigh.

Yes you could still give it a try later down the road, I have heard

of a cat that tested negative after a year, so that's why I always say
a
minimum of 90 days. I tested Bailey for the first 3 years and he
always
tested positive, I figured after 3 years, he was positive. BUT
OVERALL, IS HE HEALTHY?

I also had both he and Joey PCR tested, it tests the DNA, the problem
is
the test is delicate and must be done correctly so choose a lab you
really trust to do it right. Bailey was probably 8 or 9 years old at
the time. Joey and Bailey were best buds so I figured if there was a
possibility of anyone getting it it would be Joey. Bailey was positive,

Joey was negative. WELL, IF JOEY STAYS NEGATIVE, THAT'S FANTASTIC.
AND IF BAILEY IS HEALTHY, THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS. WHAT WAS THE MOMENT
YOU DECIDED TO HAVE THE PCR TEST?

the ELISA is about 100 times more sensitive than the IFA- but
not as specific- which accounts for the high % of false positives.
The
ELISA detects soluble (circulating) P27 antigen while the IFA detects
P27
antigen in nucleated cells, neutrophils and platelets, or in bone
marrow

 Susan,
I would wait *at least* 90 days and then get the IFA test. WOULD
I
NOT WANT TO GET THE ELISSA TEST AGAIN??? ISN'T THE IFA TEST THE
FINAL
SAY??? IF THE IFA CAME BACK POSITIVE, WOULD I CONTINUE TO RETEST
WITH
 THE IFA? AND HOW OFTEN?

 Keep
giving the Mega C and good food and hopefully he will clear the
virus.

But if not and it could take longer than 90 days, he'll still be
healthier with the supplements and better food, which gives him a
 better
chance of fighting off any opportunistic diseases or viruses. WILL
DO.
  THANK YOU.

I had Bailey tested once a year for about the first 5 years by then
it

was obvious he wasn't going to throw it off, this is after the
initial

retest in 90 days. I had him PCR tested when he was about 8 years
old

and it was in his DNA. But he was healthy up until he got sick at
almost 11 years of age, and he tested positive at 5 months of age,
so
 he
lived a very good life for about 11 years being positive. AND THANK
THE GOOD LORD BAILEY HAD YOU!! I'M GOING TO DO ALL I CAN FOR
MY
 GUNNAR.

AND HOPEFULLY YOU DON'T SEE ANY HUGE PROBLEMS WITH HIS MIXING WITH
KELLY AND MEAGAN (NEGS)?? I'VE GOT TO SAYTHIS SITE

Re: *** Detected as Spam *** timing on FeLV+ test

2006-09-11 Thread Susan Franklin
You are sooo correct; after all that time, it really won't matter. BUT
WOULDN'T IT BE WONDERFUL FOR THE DAY TO ACTUALLY COME TO
CELEBRATE???!

I've already told Gunnar - no matter what the test results say - HE
WILL NOT SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE WEARING A LABEL. UNLESS, OF
COURSE, IT'S A DESIGNER LABEL! ;D He's not going to be negative or
(especially) positive - he's just going to be our newest addition,
Gunnar.

i'd definitely go for the IFA instead of the elissa--the false
positive
rate is just too high on the latter. i don't know how much actual
research
there is on how long it can take to clear on the IFA--i'd seen a cite
of up
to 8 months from exposure, tho that one no longer appears where i saw
it.
belinda says it was a year. part of the issue is that, if after all
that
time, the cats is still positive, does it really matter? for keeping on
eye
on things, yes, but if the kitty's been in your family that long, it's
not
likely that his status will really make much difference in whether he
stays,
is it?

others will have more info re: mixing positives with negatives, and/or
mixing unvaccinated negatives with positives. personally, i would
vaccinate
my negatives and mix with no problem, but there's an ongoing debate
about
the safety of vaccinations that each individual needs to weigh.

You guys, as I've said before, are FANTASTIC. Whenever I get down
about
stuff I read on other Internet sites regarding mixing or throwing
off
the virus, I can always count on coming to you and getting an
 optimistic, truthful and knowledgeable answer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you I will reschedule Gunnar's
appointment for 120 days from August 3. Instead of re-testing with
the
ELISA, I will have the IFA test done. That is correct??

And if, God forbid, the IFA is positive after 120 days, how many
more
days would you recommend I wait before I retest again??

And are you guys okay with mixing?? My girls are 16 and almost 8.
Gunnar is 1-1/2 or 2. The girls are in the process of being
vaccinated.
I'm sure they won't be grooming each other, so all I need to do is
keep
the litter box clean and worry about the food/water bowls. I can
pick
up breakfast/lunch/dinner dishes immediately after meals, but what's
the
best route to take regarding the water bowl? And I guess I would
clean
the litter box in the morning and when I get home each night from
work.
Does this sound like a safe plan? Any other suggestions would be
 appreciated.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your advice and
words of wisdom. You've made a nervous sister to three cats a
more
calmer person. Like I told our vet, who said don't count on it
when
I told her we were literally praying to throw the virus, I trust and
believe more in what I read on this site than I would the vet's
office.
You guys have been there, done that. And you've got love, which
is
 the strongest feeling of all.

God bless all of you and your kitties!!

 Keep the faith.

retest using the IFA at a minimum of 90 days--i go for 120 days
since
 most
times it takes between three and four months to clear the virus--so
 unless
you are absolutely sure that he couldn't have been in contact with
an
infected cat that entire amount, better to wait.

statistically, 70% of those originally tested positive on the ELISA
 will
test negative on the IFA--if you do not test too soon. as belinda
says,
 even
if an IFA is positive after 90-120 days, it's still not a
 definite--the
 virus can still clear itself.
