I have a cat with FIV

2005-12-20 Thread erin moody
Hello to all,   i am new to this site, and looking for any
info anyone has. My uncle reciently died and he had an indoor / outdoor
cat.  There was confusion as to who was first taking it in, well
noone did.  I drove the 45 min drive 3 times the first day to try
to catch the cat.  They locked it outside for 2 weeks! The
neighbor helped me catch Fingers (the cat).  I took it home and
locked it in a spare bedroom away from my other cats. I finally
convinced a family to take her in, with the exception I checked her out
at the vet.  Well,  yesterday I found out she tested positive
with FIV.  I love this cat.  Fingers has such a frendly
personality. I know its a plus that she has extra fingers, but noone
seems to want her now.  I have contacted Tabbys Place which takes
cat in with FIV.They won't take anymore cats due to space. I would keep
her myself, but my one cat fights. If I am correct that is the only way
they transmit the virus. I  live in New  Jersey, but am
willing to  do  just about anything for this cat.   Erin

Michelle,
I can only let fingers have the spare bedroom. see I rent and the room
is 8 by 10. Not a horrible size, but unfair to ask her to live her life
in.  I'm  really hoping to find her a home  if I
plaster the  town  with flyers and pictures.  My
roommates agreed to let me keep her on a month to month  bases,
reevaluating  every month.  I just hate this position I'm
in.  Erin  On 12/20/05, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I know this is not ideal, but can you divide your house and
keep Fingers but keep her separated from your other cat?  I have 3 FeLV+
cats and one negative cat who I rescued, and my negative cat lives in our
bedroom, laundry room, and bathroom, which are connected and separated by a door
from the rest of the house. Not ideal at all, but workable. There are two FIV
lists on yahoo and I found a home for an FIV+ cat on one of them last year, but
it took a long time and we had to drive the cat 20 hours to his new home.

Do you know anything about the vaccination for FIV? Is it
possible to test positive with it? She was owned  at one point, no
vet records though. would the western blot be still positive if she was
vaccinated?  Or is there another test that you know of to clear up
this situation?    erin On 12/20/05, Hideyo Yamamoto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Before you get convinced that she is
really positive for FIV – I would ask the vet to send a sample to test
for Western Blot – I have 6 positive cats, but 2 cats ended up being
false positive – did the vet run inside snap shot test or did it send it
outside?

Just so that we are clear, as I understand
it, for FIV to bet transmitted, it requires for a FIV positive cat to bite a
negative one – and not the other way around.  There is a very active
support group for FIV cats, you should join the list, lots of people on the
list, they mix their positives with negatives, and none of negatives have
become positive for anyone and I am one of them, too.  I am hoping that
you will find a way to keep the kitty -

Here's the address – you will
need to join through yahoo – please do, you get a lot of good information
from this list on FIV – not worry too much.. Most of FIV positive cats do
live a normal life span if they are indoor kitties – again I have 6 FIV
kitties, and they are very healthy.. and some of them are older, too.

Make sure that you join the FIVcats2 not
FIVcats (most of the FIVcat group moved to FIVcats2 due to the harassment
posting from a couple of the list members

I can't believe that there isn't a known way to test. So many cats are
in jeopardy due to the vaccination if the shelters don;t specially test
them. Its a hard concept for me to grasp that they passed this
vaccination without considering the outcome of lost or abandoned pets.

That's just one of the things that bothers me about the FIV vaccine ~ once
vaccinated w/ the vx., all cats will test POSITIVE for the FIV virus. I am
pretty sure the cats will test positive on any of the
tests.
I am sure Hideyo or one of the group members who have more up to date news
on the vaccine will chime in.
It's a pity that in cases where a cat has no prior history, that even
veterinarians still assume they have the virus.
IMO, they should have addressed this before
marketing the vaccine.
Even if positive, FIV+ cats can live long and healthy lives.
Best of luck to you

Well I canceled the vet today. With knowing that Fingers will test
positive with the Western blot test  if vaccinated. I wasn't close
to my uncle. So i don't know Fingers History. My uncle had a few
girlfriends and I have to guess the one of them bought him Fingers. So
now I need to do some investigation. I will be randomly calling all
vets in the area and try to talk to his girlfriends.  I have more
hope now. My uncle wasn't a huge animal lover, so him taking Fingers to
the vet is somewhat unlikely. Though Fingers is spade so had to have
gone to a vet at some point.  And if vets are now giving the
vaccination as routine shots then Im hoping that I can find records.
Thank you everyone who has helped me.  I'll  let you know
what I find out.   erinOn 12/22/05, Belinda Sauro <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hideyo,  What is the problem?  Is the court case because you
have too many animals?  If they are all taken care of I don't see
why anyone would care. The law definitely needs to be changed
then.  I don't have alot of extra money, but count on me to help
in any way that I can.   ErinOn 12/22/05, Hideyo Yamamoto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Hideyo

Hopefully you already got my pledge/email
of 12/20.  As I'm grounded in Chicago
over the holidays this year, I've committed to covering our 24/7
department which means I get some extra $$ so please know you can count on
another $300 from me for legal fees. Apart from the fact I very much want to
help anyway, knowing it's for a specific great cause just made the
prospect of working overtime hours during the holidays a whole lot more meaningful!
(I'm also not much good at fund-raising per se, so to me this is the best way
to help.)

I think it's great that you're going ahead
with this fight for animal rights and I feel honored to be able to help in any
way I can!

love & hugs, Kerry

Hi, everyone, I just wanted to let you guys know that the
update situation of my situation with the city regarding violation of the pet
limit law ---

I think I am going to need a lawyer and thanks to Michelle,
I thing I might found a lawyer with animal right locally.. I don't know
whether it ends up going to district court or not at this point, but I will
have to hire someone to represent me regardless as the city has been trying to
take an advantage of me to set me up for some things already.

I also have a criminal case coming up and probably hire
someone else to represent me ---

All said, Greg, my boy friend thinks it could cost probably
a few thousands dollars for both depending on how far it goes --- as I really
cannot afford to go through with it without having a lawyer, at the same time,
I am not sure how I can also afford that much money at this time….

So, here I am, I am asking if anyone could or will be
willing to pitch in for the attorney fees for my cases –

If so, please contact me!

Thank you very much for all the support and prayers!!

Hideyo

So is the vaccination done with feline leukemia?  So far every vet
a called was helpful but swore that there is no vaccination to prevent
FIV.  The term VX was used, is that the vaccination?  3 out
of 5 places I called told me to bring the cat in because it was
hazardous to my other cats health.  I would assume vets would know
more about FIV then me, but obviously the don't. I am so glad I took
Fingers in, if someone else had I could only imagine the outcome.

Hideyo,  I'm trying to understand.  are you now in violation
of state or county laws?  You would need to talk to the governing
body in your town, invite them over and convince them to change the
laws.  But if someone on the board already doesn't like you my
understanding is you have lost.  See even if you are able to
change the law you are still in violation if you have already been
charged. which means that you will pay alot of money and time to still
lose. Is the lawyer you hired well liked with the town officials?
If not find a new lawyer.  It is more important to find one well
liked then knowledgeable.  thats how politics play.  You
could try to get a city ordnance for being a shelter. but once again
that might not work if they don't like you.  Let me know all the
terms of your court history.  My mother Knows alot about these
town rules, New Jersey though.  I'll try and get as much inside
scoop as i can.   Erin

thought.  I hate when people get such power trips. If you have ins

slight chance that they will take your pets away. That is if the city

elizabeth, I'm going on what i've always thought to be true about
anemia. The best is  boost the oxygen-carrying capacity, so coked
liver is good or iron and B vitamins. Be careful with the vitamins
though a little goes a long way. Defective production of red blood
cells by  the bone marrow may lead to tumors, which sounds like
Tiggies problem. How long has she been anemic?  I would feed her
one ounce of liver a day for one or two weeks.   Hope that
