2015-07-03 Thread Margo

Hi Kathleen,

No-one knows how contagious FeLV is. It has too many variables, including how susceptible each exposed cat is to contracting the virus. I would suggest that you as your Vet for buprenorphine instead of the Metacam. It is VERY effective, simple to give, and doesn't carry the risks of Metacam, especially long term (more than a single dose).

I would not choose anything for my cats that carries a Black Box warning.

Best to you and Oreo,

Margo

Margo, thanks for the information. Our adult cat was vaccinated for FeLV before we brought the kitten into the house, thankfully. I'm going to leave her downstairs awhile longer, until the kitten's illness resolves - either he gets better... or doesn't make it. She's not down there all alone, as my daughter's bedroom is down there and my son plays video games there as well. I know she isn't happy being away from the rest of the family, but I feel she's safer down there for now. Eventually, if the kitten recovers, I'll have to let her back up, but I'd like to see Oreo symptom free first. I'm hopefully that he can either shed the virus or go into some kind of remission. Right now, he seems to be doing better. He is eating fairly well, and is finally becoming more playful. He's been on Metacam for 5 days straight (before that he was on it for four days, then two days off and then another four days with two days off), so I'm worried about his kidneys, but it's a low dose, and it helps him feel so much better and makes him want to eat. The vet felt the cons were outweighed by the pro's at this point.

It would be good to know just how contagious the virus is. There seems to be so many varying opinions on that question.

2015-07-01 Thread KATHLEEN BUSO
Thanks for the replies. We took Oreo back to see the vet yesterday afternoon.
When I got home from work, he seemed so much better. He greeted me with loud
meows and let me know he was hungry, so I fed him - he ate well without any
assistance from me - and then noticed that his left eye was quite red. I
immediately called our vet, who saw him right away, and said he has uveitis.
She felt it is probably from FIP. She said she thought his belly felt a bit
full and squishy. She suggested doing a test of the fluid in his belly, to see
if it is FIP but I said no for now. I don't really see any point in doing it.
If it is FIP, I guess we will see a decline pretty quickly. Right now he is
eating, and doing okay. He sleeps most of the time, but still snuggles and
purrs, and doesn't seem to be in any pain, other than his sore eye, which we
are treating with drops. Poor little guy. He doesn't deserve this. And of
course, I'm worried about my other cat, who is being kept in the basement for
now. We had her tested for the Leukemia virus, and it came back negative,
thankfully. Now I'm worried about the FIP being passed on to her, if Oreo does
indeed have it.

The good news is that Oreo tested negative for herpes and chlamydia, so it
doesn't look like he has a URI, but he does have a fever that won't go away. I
guess that is a direct symptom of the leukemia, along with the lethargy and
poor appetite. I understand the uveitis could be from the Leukemia too.

Sally, we are in Thunder Bay Ontario, about 3 hours from Duluth, so I could
take Oreo there for LCTI treatment, or see about getting it shipped to us. I'm
so glad to hear it helped your kitty. If Oreo doesn't have FIP, we may give it
a try. I just have to wait to see how he is over the next few days.

Hi Kathleen,

I'm sorry you and Oreo are having such difficulties.

Uveitis in cats is just as likely (in fact more likely) to be caused by FeLV as FIP.You noted that. I'm not sure why your Vet chose to bring FIP into this.

There is no test for FIP.

Even a test on what MIGHT be FIP associated ascites. From VIN "FIP classically produces a clear but viscous yellow effusion, usually in the belly but possibly in the chest or in both locations. The fluid typically has a total protein level greater than 3.5 mg/dl. Several efforts have been made to find a diagnostic test that could be performed on this fluid. So far we know that typically FIP fluid is high in lactate dehydrogenase, alpha-amylase, and alpha-1 glycoprotein. These proteins provide evidence of the inflammatory nature of the fluid and would be evidence pointing towards FIP (though any other inflammatory fluid would yield similar results)."Here's the article;

http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=681

_most important_

FIP IS NOT CONTAGIOUS CAT TO CAT.

Please FeLV vaccinate your other cat, and let her out of the basement...
I have two FeLV+ adult cats. Both have been on low dose interferon forover two years, and are (Knock-on-wood) doing pretty well. I also keep immunoreglan in case either crashes. I don't know if either of these actually helps, but I think the interferon made a noticeable difference, and quickly.

In your position, since there HAS been improvement, I'd keep doing what you're doing. Keep him fed, and love him. Sometimes that's all you can do...

All the best,

Margo

2015-06-30 Thread Katherine K.
Kathleen,

I have used LTCI on my 13 year old cat. He was diagnosed with FeLV 2 years
ago and got 3 injections in the first month, and then has gotten an
injection once per month after that. I think it helped him initially come
back from being very ill when first diagnosed (that plus daily syringe
feeding for a month, until he regained his appetite). If you are OK with
spending $50 per shot it might be worth a try. I have not tried it on
younger cats or kittens. Don't know about Canada, but in the US my vet
orders the LTCI in packs of 3 or 10 for me, and I learned to give the
injections to him at home. It needs to stay refrigerated so there's usually
a shipping charge for an ice pack.

If he can fight through the URI, good quality food, TLC and a low stress
environment will be good for your little Oreo. If you have not tried
syringe feeding (aka assist feeding), ask your vet for a handful of 10mL
syringes and look up how-to videos on YouTube for pointers. (I think my vet
once gave my cat a dose of Valium or something similar to help jumpstart
his appetite, but that was years before he was FeLV and just had a regular
URI.) Thank you for taking care of him. Sometimes we do everything we can
but the virus is just too much for the younger ones' developing systems to
handle. In those cases just keeping them comfortable and loved is the best
you can do. Enjoy the happy moments you have with Oreo.

Katherine

Hi, I am looking for advice about our little Oreo. We adopted him at 9 weeks
from a rescue group. His mom was a stray who was ill when she had her
kittens. The kittens were eventually bottle fed and had a rough start in
life, but then seemed to recover and were adopted out. About two weeks ago,
our Oreo started to show signs of illness. His inner third eyelid came out,
and then he started running a fever. I took him to the Rescue's vet, and she
gave me antibiotics and some metacam to bring down the fever. She said the
mom had been tested for a bunch of viruses, including feline leukemia and
 came back negative

Hi Kathleen,
I have used LTCI and I live in Hamilton, Ontario.  My cat was IFA positive for
FeLV (meaning persistently infected as the virus was in bone marrow) and he
went negative a few months after starting the LTCI, so in my opinion, it is
definitely worth a shot for your little Oreo.  Your vet can call Terry
Beardsley at LTCI and he will help explain the paper work.  Should only take a
week for Health Canada to make an exception.  Otherwise LTCI can be shipped to
a vet in the states virtually overnight.  Hope this helps and best of luck with
your little guy.  just curious, where in Canada are you from?

Re: [Felvtalk] 4 month old kitten with Feline Leukemia

2015-06-28 Thread swacht1946
First of all Kathleen Oreo needs to be seriously treated for URI – Tobramycin
and Terramycin – drops of Tobramycin followed with Terramycin to help keep in
the drops for eye issues. Oreo needs to be on an antibiotic to help combat the
secondary infections. You may need to syringe feed Oreo – a gruel of canned –
and KMR a milk replacer. I prefer Breeders Edge from Revival, a great feline
milk replacer - they ship quickly. IF Oreo becomes dehydrated subq fluids will
need to be given -

The thing is being aggressive in treatment and keeping Oreo hydrated and
nourished.

As for Oreo being tested at this young age – well it’s not necessarily
accurate. Should be retested no sooner than 30 days from the first test.
sites for info are www.vet.cornell.edu - www.2ndchance.info/flv.html LTCI
is a product from T-CYTE Therapeutics – another site www.sheltermedicine.com
Koret Shelter Medicine Program

www.v63.net/catsanctuary is where this info came from – web site from the UK

If your vet suggests testing a young kitten for FIV with the in-house test –
BEWARE! This is the same for FeLV

Testing a kitten for FIV with the in-house test is a complete waste of time and
money – the reason is that the test looks for FIV antibodies which are produced
by the body in response to the virus – this is fine in adult cats, but not for
kittens, because a kitten born from an FIV mother will inherit the antibodies
from its mother but rarely the virus – so although it would test positive for
FIV, it would likely not actually have the virus. The kitten will, over several
months, lose its mother’s antibodies, and would then test negative for FIV. If
it is important to know whether a kitten is actually FIV or not, there is a
different test known as a PCR which looks for the DNA of the virus itself. This
test is not widely available (Langford Lab, Bristol is one that does it).

  FeLV
  Feline Leukemia Virus

FeLV is one of the fairly common cat viruses, that is much
misunderstood

  FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus)

The virus is particularly devastating to very young cats who rarely live
beyond the age of two when infected. Older cats who pick up the virus can live
for years, like several at Catwork.

  How is FeLV caught?
The virus is present in saliva and spread by close prolonged contact such
as mutual grooming or shared food bowls. Biting will obviously also spread the
virus.

Symptoms – The symptoms can be many and varied (some of them similar to
FIV)
There can be a progressive deterioration in condition over time. Clinical
signs can include fever, lethargy, poor appetite and weight loss. Respiratory,
skin and intestinal problems are sometimes signs of the disease. Cancer tumours
develop in some cats.

What to do if your cat tests positive for FeLV.
It is important to test a second time, at a laboratory, at an interval of
12 weeks from the first test.
This is because, when a cat encounters the virus, it can become
temporarily infected, and the cat’s immune system gets to work ‘dealing’ with
it. In most cases, the cat’s immune system will win and the virus will be
beaten. However, during this period the cat will test positive for the virus.
After about 12 weeks, through the more complex test at a laboratory, it will
usually be clear if the cat has successfully shaken off the virus.
Alternatively, the virus may have taken a hold and that cat will then be
persistently infected.

Don't give any more metacam. That can be toxic to the kidneys,
especially if used in a dehydrated cat. The manufacturer now recommends
it for one-time use only. It needs to be dosed carefully, according to
weight. I did use it in April and May for my terminally ill Harley, to
help control his cancer pain, along with buprenorphine. He got it every
3 days - I think we went to 2 to 2.5 days at the end. For him, pain
inflammation control was more important than potential kidney damage.
But I wouldn't use it more than one time in your situation.

I have used the LCTI drug and had it shipped from the U.S. to Canada, to my
vets. I had absolutely no success with it. We carefully monitored our little
boy’s blood work for 4 to 6 months and there was no change in things like his
haemoglobin levels and retic counts. Try Stanazalol (Winstrol) instead. It is
an anabolic steroid and as I explained in my earlier posts, we had immediate
and stunning results with it. It also helps improve appetite and general
well-being while improving red cell production.

Hi
I am so sorry to hear your little Oreo has tested +.

Try anything you can to get him to eat. Tempt him with any and every thing. He
has to eat. Tuna juice is a good one, as is rotisserie chicken. I don't think
steroids are a good idea...maybe a bit drastic and they are very hard on his
system, especially as he is so young. Brynn is on steroids for her
stomatitis... we really wish there was another option for her

We have Brynn on Maitake D fraction. She takes the diluted drops very easily. I
am convinced they are helping her as aside from her stomatits she is completely
asymptomatic

Tetracycline. He has been taking Metacam intermittently to bring down his
fever, and he always perks up when he has the metacam. I've been putting Lysine
in his food, because I was told it would help if his upper respiratory
infection is due to herpes. I've been feeding him high calorie canned cat food,
and he had been eating fairly well until the last few days. He is eating today,
but I have to coax him. He is using the litter box regularly and normally,
doesn't have diarrhea and hasn't vomited at all. His main symptoms are that he
is quite lethargic, has a fever and his eyes look really bad. He can barely see
out of them due to the inner third eyelid being so pronounced. He is also
wheezy at times. He has been sick for almost 2 weeks now, with no sign of
improving.

I am hoping we can nurse him through this and then deal with the feline
leukemia diagnosis after that, so any other suggestions on how to help him
recover from the URI would be great. I will ask the vet about using Tobramycin
and Terramycin. Amani, thanks for letting me know your experience with LCTI.
I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you but that's great that you had success
with the steroid. I'll ask my vet about that too.

Hi, I am looking for advice about our little Oreo. We adopted him at 9 weeks
from a rescue group. His mom was a stray who was ill when she had her kittens.
The kittens were eventually bottle fed and had a rough start in life, but then
seemed to recover and were adopted out. About two weeks ago, our Oreo started
to show signs of illness. His inner third eyelid came out, and then he started
running a fever. I took him to the Rescue's vet, and she gave me antibiotics
and some metacam to bring down the fever. She said the mom had been tested for
a bunch of viruses, including feline leukemia and came back negative, so there
was no reason to test Oreo. A week later, he was worse so I took him to another
vet and she tested him and told me he tested positive for feline leukemia. Up
until yesterday, he seemed to still have a fairly good appetite but was
sleeping a lot and showing symptoms of upper respiratory infection. Today he is
uninterested in food and seems much worse. I was wond
ering if anyone had any suggestions that would help, or should I just accept
that there's nothing that can be done? We were considering trying the LCTI drug
but we live in Canada so we would have to travel into the States to get it. It
would be about a 3.5 hour drive there and would be hard on Oreo, as he hates
the car. Has anyone used LCTI and had any success with it? Is there anything
else I can do for Oreo now, to help him feel better, like steroids? Any
suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kathleen

I have used the LCTI drug and had it shipped from the U.S. to Canada, to my
vets. I had absolutely no success with it. We carefully monitored our little
boy?s blood work for 4 to 6 months
