Lee, would you like me to send you my holistic stomatitis protocol? It
worked on both my cats (not Felv+, though), one of which had it so bad that
blood spurted out his mouth whenever he opened it.

All the kittens need to be retested after 3 months on the SNAP test. The virus
can take 12 weeks to show up on the test after exposure.

A false negative is possible but not probable since they were living together
before you took them in or at least had contact with each other.  FeLv is NOT
as contagious as vets would have you think but I do isolate the positives from
the negatives anyway.  Steroids are only to be used in extreme emergency. They
should not be given as a continuous medication.  I do give my cat with
stomatitis a steroid shot every two to three months if needed, maybe less if
the stomatitis looks like it is interfering with his ability to eat.  Other
than that, I stay away from continuous medications in general.  The liver and
kidneys can be severely stressed and compromised by having to deal with
continuous doses of medications (poisons is what they are even if they are
supposed to only poison viruses and bacterium).  Controlling disorders by a
good natural diet is a terrific way to control or eliminate most problems.  The
occasional antibiotic shot or steroid
should be given when needed of course, but always question the vet as to why
it would be needed and would there be an alternative to giving the med.

Re: [Felvtalk] Sick FeLV+ Kitten

2012-08-22 Thread Christiane Biagi
Didn't find out my Tucson was FELV+ until several years after after I
brought her in (as a kitten) with my other cats. She had tested neg on
ELissa. So when I discovered she was pos, there was no choice for me about
keeping them integrated. I had the others vaccinated. I subsequently
brought in an outside "feral" (aka dumped) that I'd been feeding for a
couple of years & he turned out to be pos. All of them lived together &
none of the neg ever got felv. My Romeo passed away last year from
lymphoma-he was 8 or 9 at least & my Tucson is lying on my bed right now
living the good life of a 14+ years spoiled & pampered cat.

I did some research & decided on grain free foods. I found they put on a
whole lot of weight w. dry only so I feed them all Wellness canned w. a bit
of Wellness weight mgmt. dry as their late night snack. I have one who is
diabetic & that diet has been good for her as well.

But I know that pos kittens are the most vulnerable-their immune system
can't handle the opportunistic infections.

so many questions that seem to get conflicting answers.

First, how do I care for a FeLV+ kitten/cat? She's recovering quickly with a

Kaya should be treated like a kitten who got sick.  Kittens do this regularly
and because their immune systems are not as fully developed as a cat's is, they
tend to go downhill fast if not given extra food, meds, etc..  Do NOT put this
cat on steroids.  It will compromise her immune system even more and ruin her

[Felvtalk] Sick FelV kitten

2008-12-18 Thread nancy denison
Lorrie,
I have an FeLV positive kitten also who is about 3 to 4 months old and only 3.8
pounds also. She developed a sore on her mouth that slowed her down
considerably and I thought I was going to lose her. My vet was waiting on this
new FDA medicine she had heard about and ordered for me. It finally came in
and thte first shot has already made a marked difference in her. Taz is now
back to her old self. However, as she was getting weaker she developed a limp
in one of her front legs for no apparent reason. I thought her leg may have
fell asleep from laying on it so long but that wasn't it either. Taz is also
anemic and I have her on Pet Tinic.
This new medicine is supposed to target the bone marrow to help with healthy
blood cell reproduction. It's called Imulan (sp?). It's kind of expensive but
I've seen the positive results so far and will keep giving her this for as long
as she is responding to it. She's not limping and her blood counts are
responding positively. This might be something you can try as well.
Good luck with the kitten.

Gary,
I am sorry to hear that! Gray Kitty had his second blood transusion last week.
We know we can not sustain him this way, but we are trying to buy time. His
Hematocrit went down to 9 when he was first diagnosed. He had the first
transfusion and it ended up going in the normal range of 35. He then dipped
back down to 18 and then 15. At that time, he had a second transfusion and he
has gone back up to 35 again. We are currently working with a doctor in
Michigan, who has done bone marrow transplants in cats. We are hoping to help
future cats with this illness.
There is an anemia group as well? How do I get to that one too?

Hi Gloria,
Just an FYI, Nutrived is better than Pet Tinic, it has the folic acid
needed in blood building and Pet Tinic doesn't. Vit B, Iron and Folic

Lorrie, this happened to my Shadow (felv neg) and we took him to Missouri
University at Columbia. they did a n and found a tumor on his spine. he was
18 and in severe pain, so i couldn't justify keeping him alinve and in pain so
put to sleep. have your vet check for tumors, since he is young, could be if
it is a tumor, could do something about it. dorlis

I use PetTinic as a supplement. That's what I used with my last
anemic cat, who was also on doxycycline. I think you have to be
careful with iron supplements, use as directed by the vet. Best of
luck with your 8 mo old baby!

Re: [Felvtalk] Sick FelV kitten

2008-12-17 Thread Belinda Sauro
Cats almost never get low on iron, it does happen but not very common.
Bailey was low when he was anemic but my vet said this was not very
common. Has your vet tested the baby to make sure she is low on iron,
too much iron isn't good either. You may try nutrivid it is a vitamin
b, folic acid and iron supplement, CRF cats who are mildly anemic take
it, but if the baby is very anemic with an HCT 20 or lower your in big
trouble and more aggressive intervention is required but you really need
to find out what is causing it and as I said before I would get the baby
on doxy and possibly prednisolone. Bailey got both of these but
eventually we ended up putting him on epogen which corrected his
anemia. His HCT got as low as 15 but once we got him on epogen it took
about 3 weeks to start going up and after 6 weeks it was back up to 40,
when he passed from pancreatic cancer his HCT was still normal at 34%.

He was on epogen for months, once his HCT normalized he went from 3
doses a week to one a week. With out it he would have died within a
week or two. Epogen is expensive but Bailey wouldn't have gotten those
extra months without it. We suspected Bailey had cancer somewhere but
couldn't find it, we did test after test and nothing conclusive ever
showed up, my vet didn't feel comfortable treating it without knowing
what kind or where.

Re: [Felvtalk] Sick FelV kitten

2008-12-17 Thread Belinda Sauro
Has the vet put her on Doxoxycline, hemobartonella is a very common
cause of anemia and positives get it frequently. Doxy will help get rid
of it and if she doesn't have it won't hurt her but if she does, she
will die if it isn't treated and the doxy may just save her life. Has
she even been tested for hemo and if so did your vet let you know it is
extremely difficult to get a correct test result for it, many cats test
negative even thought they are positive and any good vet would almost
automatically treat a positive for it if they are anemic to be on the
safe side.

What does the vet say is causing the anemia? If he said the FeLV is
causing it, run and find a new vet, anemia is NOT a symptom of FeLV,
there are causes for it and you have to find the cause and treat it if
that is possible, but just because a cat is positive doesn't mean it
will get anemia and die, though you would never know if you talk to some
vets. Many vets are not very interactive when it comes to treating sick
positives because they don't think they should be allowed to live
anyway, so when they do get sick they blame whatever it is on the FeLV.

One of our FelV kittens is very anemic. Has anyone ever tried iron
suppliments? We went back to the vet yesterday, and got her vitamins
and iron, and hope this will buy her a bit more time.

She is 8 months old and only weighs 3 1/2 pounds. She didn't
actually lose the weight, she just never gained anymore weight
than that, as she is also a small cat.

She recently lost control of her back legs and the vet isn't sure
this is caused by the FelV. He thinks it may be a neurological
thing.. This happened suddenly about a week ago. First she was
wobbly and then she got so she couldn't stand at all, and also lost
control of her bladder and bowels. She is still eating and does not
seem to be in any pain. Otherwise I'd put her to sleep. She is my
daughter's favorite cat, and she doesn't want to do this unless the
cat is in distress. I just wondered if any of you had ever seen this
lose of mobility in a FelV cat? Advice please.

Thanks, Lorrie
