[Felvtalk] Bailey
Belinda, What a beautiful story and so sad! My husband and I too lost a beautiful boy who came into our lives and stole our hearts. My husband was always a dog person until he met Blondie. He changed his mind forever. We now have 8 cats but none has ever taken Blondie's place. I've had other FeLV kitties since him but luckily they have all been healthy and lived fairly well. My favorite little girl (Kissy) lived until she was 17! I would adiopt another FeLV kitten in a heartbeat. None of the ones I have now are FeLV positive, but I have learned so much from this newsletter and on my own research. All I know is they are like other kitties and just want love and affection. Good luck in your ventures and God bless you for loving your wonderful Bailey and that you always have nothing but happy lovely memories of him. [Felvtalk] New to the list - Laura and Bailey
Hi everyone :-) My name is Laura and I am on the list on behalf of my Aunt Sue and her fur-baby Bailey. It all started because she was not going to the bathroom regularly. Bailey is 4 yrs old and was diagnosed last June with feline leukemia... she does have bone marrow involvement - mds or myelodysplastic syndrome. My Aunt took her to Michigan State University and they wanted her to start chemo right away. My Mom passed away last May (2010) from breast cancer so the last thing my Aunt wanted to try was chemo. I do not have all the numbers but I know that her hct was 8% and she had her first transfusion in July of last year. She was also started on prednisone twice daily, clavamox twice daily (i think), pet-tinic, dmg, epogen every other day(red blood cell stimulator), and two herbal remedies (I cannot remember the names of both - one is ashwaganda i think). Last month she developed what they thought was a uti and she was placed on a quinalone antibiotic and she required her second transfusion. She seems to be favoring her back leg as well. She can jump up but then she has problems jumping down. I am going to give her the info on the LTIC - sounds like that would possibly replace the epogen. She is just looking for some hope and advice as to what she can do for Bailey. Thank you so much (in advance). I've decided that's a genetic thing. My aunt and I both have it too. It's called ODD-Opposite Direction Disorder. LOL. Wow! That is really cool! I laughed when I first opened it because I thought that was the actual picture, and I didn't get it, but then I realized you had inserted Bailey's pic right next to the clouds so we could see the similarity, and then laughed again at myself for being a 'blonde'. I think that's a cool pic! :) Wendy --- Belinda <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Sent this to the list but it had to be approved > because of the size > so I just went ahead and put it online. If you contact the station they may be willing to provide a copy of the segment to you (maybe for a fee). Most stations I have dealt with will. You have to get to an editor or newsperson and keep at it. The first may say no but the second may not. OT: My Sign from Bailey
I'm alittle speechless at the moment ... I sometimes turn the news on sometimes I don't, this morning something told me to turn it on. I had sent a photo of my KC to use on the pet paws section they use on the weather forecast. They told me they would email and let me know when it would be used if they use it, so I don't watch the news every morning. Just now on the weather forecast they showed a photo of the beach, it was overcast and cloudy but in the clouds there was a VERY clear section on the right that looked exactly like the outline of a cats face and even more looks exactly like a photo I have of Bailey (a close up I took several years ago), same tilt of his head, same white mark on the right side of his face that made him look like he was always smiling. And the weather forecaster remarked doesn't that look like a cats face, that's when I could clearly see it. I'm going to try and find out when the person that sent it in took it. It looked like the photo in the link below, mostly just the face part ... it gave me chills! http://www.bemikitties.com/cgi-bin/photo/index.cgi?album=/Bailey&mode=viewpicture&picture=bailey2.jpg I thanked Bailey for giving me a sign like I asked him. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Bailey has gone home
I just don't know Belinda, it is kinda weird, that his blood glucose stayed so level with that severe of a pancreas problem. I doubt it was the raw diet, lots of people are doing raw these days with great results. Personally I just too lazy to do anything more than to refill and gravity feeder of kibble from a bag once a week, and to give the occasional canned food with supplements just for a treat (and for my peace of mind). I don't think it was anything you did, or that you didn't do, I think it just happened, and sometimes it's hard to just accept that, because that means you have to admit that some things are beyond your control, and we try so had to control everything, to do everything right, to be so careful, and then something like this comes along and just CRUSHES everything we've been doing for so long, and it just sucks the wind out of your sails. Just remember, just because you're the captain of the ship, doesn't mean you're not at the mercy of the forces of nature, but you can't just abandon all hope, and become lost in the sea of it all. You have to re-rig the sails of life, and keep trying to find your bearings, and if you put up a good struggle, you'll most likely end up getting to complete your journey, landing on the shore a wiser person for all the struggle, and with a deeper respect for not only yourself, but also for the things you can't control. And that, is peace, true inner peace. I'm not a Christian, but there's a saying they have that's very wise: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. My back is killing me, I'm off to bed, night everyone! Dear my friend Bailey and Belinda, Hi, Belinda, I just read your posting – I am so very sorry to hear about Bailey – I am crying so very hard reading to find out what happened. And I am crying also because I know how difficult for you not to be able to hold Bailey. But as you mentioned, he is free now.. there is nothing that prevents him from feeling good anymore – I know that Bailey’s soul is right besides you and telling you not to be lonely because you are not.. Bailey loved and and still loves you, and will always love you just like you have, and do and will I know that the pain of losing him is not going to go away – but I will be praying that there will be a way for you to be able to live with the pain a little easier in time – and that’s what I pray for I lose mine… Love to you and your beloved Bailey – Hideyo From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Susan Loesch Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2006 9:23 AM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Bailey has gone home Belinda, I am so, so sorry that you have lost Bailey. Re: Bailey has gone home
In humans at least, fatty foods exacerabate pancreatitis but to my knowledge do not cause it. Pancreatitis can be caused by steroids (so the Prednisone may have contributed to the development and decreasing the dose was probably helpful). Pancreatitis may also be associated with biliary tract disease which could have gone undiagnosed. Elevated serum amylase and lipase on blood work are indicative of pancreatitis. All this is based on my knowledge of humans, but I'm guessing most of it is transferable- maybe someone else with more knowledge of feline disease would know...[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Belinda, I think that fatty foods cause pancreatitis (when it is caused by foods at all, which is not always the case), not raw foods. Re: Bailey has gone home
Hi Phaewryn, No, that's why we were so stumped, his blood work other than when he was anemic was ok and then it only showed his anemia, she had just checked it for the surgery and it was fine. I remember her mentioning pancreatitis way back but saying his blood work didn't back that up (she only mentioned it because of how uncomfortable he was when I fed him). I have copies of his blood work so I know she isn't lying to me. His glucose and other diabetes related values are within normal ranges. He was on higher doses of pred and that probably kept the pancreas inflammation at bay and then I lowered his dose, with my vets permission because I was afraid of what it would do to him with long term use. This probably started the turn for the worse, I really believe unchecked inflammation can become cancerous. Although in all honesty there wasn't much difference in his energy level, or how uncomfortable he was when I fed him on the higher or lower dose so maybe things were already heading in a bad direction. I can see there are alot of things I will learn from this, I just wish the learning didn't come at such a high price. I'm going to ask her if she thinks this is a recent development, the cancer anyway, his pancreas was probably inflamed for a while since eating seemed so uncomfortable for him. She did say she didn't think it was in anyway related to his FeLV+ status and had nothing to do with the anemia, just a secondary thing that happened. I really wonder now if raw caused this pancreas problem to come on. He was eating raw for about 6 months before all this came about, though he loved it and gained weight and looked very healthy while eating raw, it may well have started all these problems, my other cats did not eat it as well as he did, they all stuck with the dry food I had to leave out for my 2 stubborn guys. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... It's goods to have that closure, to know for a fact that you did everything you could, and that it was just his time. I cried my eyes out last night when I read he had passed. I am curious, did this pancreas issue not effect his blood sugar, making him diabetic? That should have been caught by routine blood panels though, so I guess it must not have. Re: Bailey has gone home
Hi All, Just found out Bailey had a tumor in his pancreas, and adenoma carcinoma, so he did make the right choice for himself, pancreatic cancer doesn't respond well to treatment. The pancreas is right by the kidney's, his kidney's were fine but his liver was in the early stages of hepatic lipidosis even though he was getting plenty of food. With pancreatic problems the body is not getting the nutrients from the food. iAn nflamed pancreas does not show up well on ultra sound or xray most of the time so that's why we didn't see it. That's also why the AD was giving him diarreha it is too high in fat. And just eating was probably uncomfortable if not painful, the ID was less high in fat but still too high for a patient with pancreatitis. My poor boy, here I was trying to keep him alive and probably causing him pain. Pancreas problems are best diagnosed with exploratory surgery and biopsies, so this is something I will know should I ever deal with it again. Signs of pancreatitis are inappetence (Bailey's first symthom), vomiting, abdominal pain, possible abdominal mass and jaundice. Bailey just started vomiting two days ago, now I am thankful for the times I gave him pain meds. My vet was very impressed with the energy healer that checked Bailey over the day before he passed, she (the energy healer) said she was drawn to his pancreas. We kept thinking the kidney's ... -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Oh Belinda,I'm in tears - thinking about how Bailey was one of our poster-kits and now he's with Vyvyan and Andy and Rissa-Tai, finally healthy. I'm so proud of you for allowing him to make the decision and for not fighting it. When the pain is fresh, it seems like it's so much larger than the joy we get from them, but it's not. And that's why we keep adopting, because the fog from the pain lifts and allows us to put it in perspective against the pure love and joy they bring to our lives. Thank you for sharing him with us. Re: Bailey has gone home
Belinda, I am so very sorry. That you loved Bailey so much shines through all your words. And I truly believe he was here on a mission, to teach you what you have learned about the positive kitties so that you could help others. He is proud of you & I know that even tho he is playing & joyful in his new health & happiness, that one ear is always cocked backwards to you. Love, Pam Hurricane Katrina's terrible message: if it is too dangerous for YOU to stay behind as a disaster approaches, then why would you leave your PETS behind? Never ever ever leave them behind! Have enough crates for all & take them with you! They are your family!

Belinda, I've been offline since Wednesday, and when I pulled up my email I saw this, but didn't want to read it. I am so terribly, terribly sorry. I know you will miss your Bailey. You have been the best mother he could have ever had, and he'll wait for you at the Bridge. God, Belinda, I am so sorry. You did everything one could possibly do, and Bailey knew that I am sure. His longevity for a positive still inspires me, and I can only hope, fruitless probably I know, that my remaining two positives match him in age. Thank you for sharing his life with us, and I am sorry for what you have gone through and what you are likely to go through for a while. michelle

oh, bailey, race joyfully about at the bridge, and accept all the headbutts and whisker-kisses from the FeLVs who've benefitted from your existence--you sent your mom and dad on a quest that will save many, and you were strong enough to stay on this plane a very long time, to touch and teach many humans... i'm so glad that bailey was able to go in his own time, belinda, surrounded by the people whose love he never questioned. thank you for sharing your life with us, bailey, fly sweetly on your new adventures, and send light to heal those you had to leave behind. Re: Bailey has gone home
Dearest Belinda, I'm so very sorry your sweet Bailey has gone on, we're all mourning his loss. You have always been there for each other and you will be still. He has transitioned to a place of joy where he can watch over you in peace and comfort, you will be transitioning too. It's something that we rarely think about when we're in the midst of our constant caregiving... the day when we turn over their care and nurturing to the source of our being... Please be gentle on yourself when you wake with him in your thoughts and for a brief instant your mind fills with all the rituals of caring for him that are no longer necessary. I'll be thinking of you when it's finally time to put away all the things that have aided in his care. It's so hard to do, you've held on so tight, for so long, now comes the time to transition to a different way to hold him, no longer in your arms, but always in your heart. You belong to each other for eternity, you always have, before you knew of his sweet presence you were there for each other waiting without knowing, now you wait in knowing. He lives on, I'm sure he'll let you know, I'm sure, when you're ready to receive it, he'll find his own special way to help you know just how close you still are to his sweet presence. I'm so grateful to my Angel Jazz for doing just that for me. It was the first, and so far, the last time that I've had any audible contact from the other side. One of our sweetest rituals has remained... I don't know if you remember me telling the group how very difficult it was for me to drink tea after Jazz passed. We shared these little moments of joy when she would read my mind and come out of nowhere when I was thinking of brewing myself a cup of tea. She'd trill in anticipation and look up expectantly as I took the tea bag from it's cover, knowing that soon our game of bat the balled up bag would begin. I found myself the other day absentmindedly balling up that little bag, it was a moment of bittersweet remembrance when I gazed smiling at it in my hand and knew my little girl was still with me. Look for those moments, and I hope very soon, you'll find yourself smiling, knowing the world is a better place for the gift of your darling Bailey and your love for him. Thank you sweet Bailey and thank you Belinda. My tears, prayers and thoughts are with you, Nina Belinda wrote: Bailey left us at 6:20 this evening. Re: Bailey has gone home
Dear Belinda~ Before I even read your post, I broke out in tears. actually. uncontrollable sobbing. I was praying so hard, wanting to hear good news. It IS like losing one of my own. Dear sweet Bailey was "our" poster" boy. He helped educate countless people about the disease with the chronicles written about his experience. For that alone, I am eternally grateful. And, I must thank you, for sharing your Bailey with us... He was so fortunate to share his (long) life with you. (If only others were that fortunate). I also believe in The Rainbow Bridge, and once our precious babies cross, that they are "whole" again - no more sickness, pain. I also believe Bailey is now "bragging" to his new group of friends about what a wonderful "Mom" he was blessed with. I also think he will NEVER leave you, that his spirit will continue to be a presence in your life, and he will encourage you to keep up your work, to honor his life. I'm sure that last hour, though painful, was a good thing for the both of you to share. He was a lucky boy. He was able to leave knowing how much he was loved, and how his life helped countless others. Perhaps, that was his mission in life all along. I'm sure, that now, all your research and educating others will have even more meaning, as I am sure you will dedicate all your work to honor Bailey.. You & Mike have my deepest sympathy. I can't even imagine what you're feeling. Please take comfort in the memories, and the fact that Bailey WAS responsible for helping so many other precious furbabies. We ALL will miss him, he was certainly a very special boy. With love & sympathy, Patti

Re: Bailey has gone home
Belinda, When I checked the site before going to bed, I was shocked and deeply saddened to see "Bailey has gone home" as a subject, and to read your post. I'm glad that you were able to be with him at the end. Thanks to you and to Bailey for all you have given to our beloved feline friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Lance
Re: Bailey has gone home
You let Bailey go on his own terms. And with unconditional love. He is very grateful for that. He will be back to visit you often. Be very gentle with yourself. You gave him exactly what he wanted. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. St. Francis - Original Message - From: "Belinda" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Saturday, May 06, 2006 11:54 PM Subject: Bailey has gone home Bailey left us at 6:20 this evening. He took a bad turn for the worse late last night and when I took him in this morning for his surgery it was evident he wasn't in good enough shape. We gave him fluids for a couple hours because he was dehydrated, his blood pressure was 60 and his temperature went from 103 yesterday to 98 today, his blood work was normal except his platelet count was low so he wasn't clotting and suregery was out of the question unless we could get his platelet count up. After two hours of fluids and a blood transfusion his platelets came up but his temperature was now 94, 96 puts kitties at risk for heart failure and she couldn't even get a blood pressure. My vet said we have 3 options, we could continue the fluids and support and see if things changed and if they did he could have the surgery tomorrow. Go ahead with the surgery and get in and out as quickly as possible or she could euthanise him. I asked her what she honestly thought of his condition, she said she though he was leaving on his own, I agreed. We talked, I asked her what to expect if he was going to die and she told me what the likely scenarios would be, she gave me a syringe of pain meds incase it got really bad for him, it would basically knock him out so he wouldn't suffer and pass on his own, she had a dinner engagement but told me to call if she was needed. I had told Bailey it was his decision to stay or go, and told him to do what was best for him. I brought him home on the fluids to keep supporting him and if he did turn for the better we would consider the surgery later. His breathing got worse just taking him to the car so I knew in my heart we didn't have long. We had about an hour, he was home with us and we were with him when he left. He is whole now and FeLV free for the first time. We were so lucky to have him for 11 years, his birthday was Monday. I will miss his bouncy, happy personality. He was so special and I learned so much thanks to him. He was our only positive and the one that was responsible for my learning everything I have about FeLV+, he has helped me save many positives and for that I thank him. Belinda, I am so sorry for your loss! But what a great honor to him, to know that his illness did SO much to save SO many cats! ALL that you have done, was because of him, how could anyone honor a cat more than that? He started some new Chinese herbs that are suppose to be specifically for the kidney's, been on them for a week or so, I havne't noticed any difference yet. Re: How's Bailey & Other Stuff some of it OT?
You've got a lot going on! I'm glad Bailey is improving. It sounds like you have a wonderful vet. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago and I asked to have it done without cutting and they did. They sent me home the following day from my surgery and I had regular, general anesthesia. I had to ask specifically about it though. My doctor was planning to cut and a friend told me to ask for endoscopic surgery. So I did, and the doctor said 'ok. fine.' I don't understand why they wouldn't offer that as first choice? But evidently they don't because it's more difficult, expensive, and/or both. But it certainly is an easier recovery. I would definitely wait for the insurance to be straightened out if at all possible. Just paying your part of the insurance will be a lot of money! Take care of yourself and Bailey and keep us posted. tonya Belinda Sauro <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi Nina & All,Bailey is doing better his bloodwork continues to be good, just did one yesterday and his HCT is at 41%. he is still lethargic but I've been weaning him to a lower dose of pred and now he is getting 10mgs, down from 20mgs two and a half weeks ago, and next week we go to 5mgs. he is more active with the lower pred dose so I think it was making him more lethargic. Oh my goodness Belinda! You certainly have a lot on your plate. I'm so pleased to hear about Bailey's improvement. You guys are amazing. When my babies are in crisis, any improvement, no matter how small is cause for celebration because it shows movement in the right direction. Cobra is expensive, but nothing like the $20,000. for the operation. Blessings and good wishes for you and your babies. I'm sure you've talked to them about possibly being away for awhile, they'll do fine and I'm sure Mike will be extra sensitive to their needs knowing how important it is to you. We understand completely, you do so much for us, please don't let concerns about falling behind with your work with the list give you added anxiety. Let us know what's going on. Re: How's Bailey & Other Stuff some of it OT?
Belinda, I am pretty sure that the employer should have sent to you a form to complete to get on COBRA. I think the employer has a certain amount of days to do this once your insurance ends. You might want to ask somebody about this. In some cases the insurance company will send you the info. and in some cases the employer is responsible. I live in TN and with my new insurance my employer has to send the COBRA info. out offering it. I know the old insurance we had the insurance company did it. I am not for sure but I think they only have something like 14 days to get this out. They can get into trouble if they don't offer your husband COBRA. I agree with Wendy you should be able to pick up the COBRA from the time your husband lost the coverage. I don't know when that was and COBRA can be expensive but it would well be worth it considering the circumstances. Good luck if you do end up having the surgery. Be very careful with yourself and don't try lifting anything or overdo it when you get home. I had to have a hysterectomy about 10 years ago. Belinda, I hope that the insurance situation is alleviated. I think you are eligible to sign up for Cobra up to 8 weeks after your insurance is terminated, but don't quote me on that date. If you are, then get it, although you might have to back pay a little on Cobra, which might cover those 3-4k$ in bills. I am not sure though. Sounds like you can't trust the people at his HR dept.
