Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccine
We always give the initial series of FELV vaccinations to all cats we adopt out. MC is right, as usual. My old vet said he had NEVER seen a case of sarcoma he felt was caused by a vaccine, but he had seen plenty of cats with FELV. the injection-site sarcoma issue has largely been eliminated by the removal of the adjuvent, the change in placement of the vaccine, and the advent of safer inoculations, and non-injecting manners of delivery. if you're NEVER going to bring another cat into your house, EVER, then i'd say, don't vaccinate. but if you are, i'd do the full initial series--which, personally, i think is effective for life, too, tho research hasn't been done to confim this. even with that research, that's how vaccines SHOULD work in all species, plus there's lots of anecdotal evidence of negatives living with positives for years without getting regular vaccinations never getting sick. remember, again, that cats who test negative CAN, indeed, retest positive later on--doesn't mean they were negative at all, just that they were tested before the viral exposure was registering on the test. there are no cases of TRULY positive cats (tested twice, with the second test long enough after the first to remove the possibility of a reaction to exposure.) it's horrible when it happens, but it happens very infrequently. there is absolutely no research that i've seen that says that vaccinating a positive stresses its immune system out, because until the virus is activated, FeLVs are not frail, compromised creatures walking around with smelling salts and hankies. in fact, there is anecdotal evidence from members of this list that vaccinating positives STRENGTHENS their immune response, as evidenced by their seeming to have much longer life spans than positives who are not vaccinated we just have to convince some researchers to follow up on that, and good luck with that. This did not hold true in my case. Tiny was 5 and Junior was 4. Junior had tested negative earlier in the year and turned positive. Daisy on the other hand was a kitten and was a love bug to Lionel, the cat who was brought from the same shelter.I belive he was the source cause he had a URI and tested positive for FIV and FELV. She has never been sick. She was probably 10 weeks old and repeatedly exposed for months to him when Pumpkin died from this. That is how I found out what was going on and tested all the cats. I lost 4 in total. Junior lived the longest just over two years from testing positive. He was very symptomatic. Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccine
I have 10 cats and had I had 11 when the outbreak occurred. Of those cats, the ones who had one vaccination given by me did not become infected. Part of that would be bc of natural immunity and part i believe is bc the original vaccine gave them immunity. Those shots were given 6 or 7 years before I got a sick cat from a shelter who in turn sickened some of my recent additions. Since then I still have these same three cats they are all older now. I feel good about that. Sally On Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 11:29 AM, Lorrie wrote: > I'm sure different vets have different opinions I like > the one your vet has. HI Lorrie, Here is a link to recommendations for core vaccines as well as vaccinations for cat at risk of exposure to FELV. http://www.catvets.com/uploads/PDF/FINALVaccineTable12.15.pdf. Squeaky used to react to the vaccine each time. He would be lethargic for 3 days. One day my vet tested him and found he was positive. Both he and Stripes tested positive that day. The vet determined Squeaky was a "carrier" and carried the disease in his bone marrow. He was never sick until his final 3 weeks. He lived to age 22. I adopted the boys in 1983.The boys were tested in 1985...years before I knew much about all of this. Stripes died in 1989. He was 16. Coco has reacted to her last 2 rabies vaccinations. I will never vaccinate her for rabies again.
