Website updated, so I think that makes the release officially announced.

Well, j-b didn't explain exactly why he wanted the release announcement
to wait, apart from "releases should be announced on Mondays or Tuesday",
but it made sense to me - you don't do releases on a Friday night because
by the time it's next week, everyone would've forgotten about it, and if
API users need some advice on how to replace deprecated functions, they'll
hit the point where fewest of us are online. Distributions aren't going to
start trying to package it and figure out deprecated users either.
So I figure having to wait a few more days isn't too bad.

The release was made, tagged and uploaded jannuary 14th its public since then
also the IRC topic has been updated with the release january the 14th

Isnt it better if the webpage is consistent and also points to the 14th ?

> so I'll push the update to the webpage then.

Testing should have been done before the release was tagged and the archieve
published. The branch was available for testing for quite a while too
Also I do test releases before i tag them but iam just one and doing pretty
much the same tests each time so theres systemic bias

I imagine we will have a 5.0.1 probably in a few weeks as more bugs are
found and fixed

Also, thanks for helping with the website update, i certainly appreciate
that you are helping here

No. It's just a freeze, and if something really bad is found,
we can still redo it.

The 5.0 release is tagged, that's not going to change. You can however
sneakily tag a 5.0.1 point release if you think 5.0 has severe problems
and then upload the tarballs for that version instead as the first
available one.

You generally shouldn't do releases on a Friday night, or
weekends, for obvious reasons.

[FFmpeg-devel] [PATCH] Website release notes for 5.0

2022-01-04 Thread Lynne
Since I couldn't find a codename preference, I went with "Desitter"
(even though the correct spelling is "De Sitter"). There's a joke in
here that if we mess up and need a 5.1 release quickly, we could
codename it "anti-Desitter" :)

The release notes go as follows:
    FFmpeg 5.0 "Desitter", a new
major release, is now available! For this long-overdue release, a major
effort
underwent to remove the old encode/decode APIs and replace them with an
N:M-based API, the entire libavresample library was removed, libswscale
got a new, easier to use AVframe-based API, the Vulkan code was much
improved,
many new filters were added, including libplacebo integration, and finally,
DoVi support was added, including tonemapping and remuxing.
    Some of the changelog highlights:

The 'N' dates on the news entry and the download page
should be substituted with whenever we tag the release
and make the signed archives.

Patch attached.
