As for the resolution needed to equal 35mm film, I think I have seen it
quoted
that it would need about 8-10 Megapixels. I imagine they are talking about
mid-range print film here, such as Kodak Gold 100. Fine grain emulsions
like
Kodachrome would obviously need more pixels.

 Brian Rumary, England
8-10 Megapixels=35mm format.
Hmm. 35mm enlarged to 4x6" or 8x10"? Or bigger?

filmscanners: [OFF] problem with image brightness

2001-01-29 Thread fotografia - tomasz zakrzewski

Please help me with this problem:
Me (photos) and my friend (HTML) are preparing my Internet photo gallery.
The problem is that the photos I've prepared in Photoshop 4.0 are prefect on
my screen, but when I view them through Internet Explorer 5.0 they appear
much darker. They also appear darker in applications like ACDSee and
ThumbsPlus. What can it be? All other peoples' web pages look ok in my IE
5.0. I also haven't had any problems with pictures I made with Photoshop.
I have to find the solution today as my web pages are already very delayed.I
was told that I should change the gamma value of the monitor within
Photoshop (currently I have 1.8, changed for a while to 2.2 and then the
pictures looked equally dark as in IE 5.0.)

Odp: filmscanners: Nikon scanner selection

2001-01-18 Thread fotografia - tomasz zakrzewski

What do you a digital back for?
Do you intend to switch from viewing slides to viewing digital images on
your screen?
I don't see any point in switching to digital for my personal photography.
My peronal work is bw on baryta paper.
I need digital equipment only because of my commercial photography - to send
quickly my photographs to a theater magazine or to have a cataloque on my
computer to have less fuss with backorders, to give theaters a set of
high-quality scans so they don't need my negatives, to apply some techniques
which I can't do traditionally because of time-pressure (i.e.
lith-processing).
A lot of application for a high-quality scanner.
But do some of you have the idea to switch to digital for everyday
photography? That would seem strange to me.

 Tomasz,
I am at the same decision point as you are. I am holding out for the
LS-4000ED. Maybe in two to five years digital backs will be at a quality
and price point I can afford. Meanwhile, I'll be working on a giant
 backload of slides.

 Hi,
I am just wondering which of the new scanners (IV or 4000) is a best buy

Of course 4000 is superior but the specification of IV seems to be better
than
LS2000 which is a decent scanner.
I am interested in your opinion what is a better solution ?
 - buying IV and keeping 1000USD for a new full frame digital body
(assuming
that it will be available at
reasonable price 3000~4000USD? within 1-2 years)
 - buying 4000 and switch to digital body after 2.5~3 years
I know that nobody knows the perfect answer, just I am curious about your
 opinions, advices

What exactly look jaggies like? (in case of LS-30)?

filmscanners: orange mask

2001-01-12 Thread fotografia - tomasz zakrzewski

Do Nikon filmscanners come with special colour profiles for scanning
different colour negatives? Somebody told they don't. In that case, how can
I automatically remove the orange mask?
What about the new Nikon scanners?

Odp: Density increase w/SilverFast and SS4000?

I am wanting only to scan 35mm and am trying to decide if I should go for
the SS4000 or wait for the SS120 with an advertised Dmax of 3.6 over the
SS4000's 3.4. I realize that the 120 will be for medium format as well,
though the Dmax increase may make it worth the wait and expensethe Digest.

Jake,
I'm also interested in this scanner. Do you know what price to expect and
when is it going to be on sale?

Thanks

Odp: Hello

2000-10-26 Thread fotografia - tomasz zakrzewski

95% of my films are 35mm, the rest 6x7cm but since I bought a Cambo 4x5inch
camera, in future I'll also have negs and trannies of this size (now I'm
only using the 6x9 rollfilm back).
The price of the scanner is the decisive factors, so I'm only considering a
35mm scanner. But, preferably from Nikon. Preferably with 4000dpi, and
Nkon-specific dust removing feature. That was simply wishful thinking :-)
BTW when is Nikon going to produce such a machine? Any 'insiders" on the
list?

What format are the films you want to scan? 35mm? Larger?

update

Is there an update of Tony Sleep's page on scanners somewhere on the net?
I mean new models of scanners, like Microtek ArtixScan 4000t or new Minolta
models tested with the Kodak transparency?

SS 120

2000-10-25 Thread fotografia - tomasz zakrzewski

Hi,

At Photokina in Cologne I saw a pre-production version of a new scanner by
Polaroid: 4000 dpi, from 24x36mm up to 6x9cm, negs and slides, 14 bit A/D
per channel, and 0-3.4 or 3.6 density (don't remeber exactly). The name of
the scanner was Polaroid SprintScan 120, or so I remember.
Does anybody know anything about this scanner? What price to expect, when on
sale?

Hello

2000-10-25 Thread fotografia - tomasz zakrzewski

I'm new on this mailinglist but I hope I'll be present here for some time.
I'm a professional photographer (mainly stage photography, architecture, bw
and colour), I ned a scanner for several reasons:
- scanning of negatives for reference before selling them to clients
- scanning of negs precious to me as a backup (that's most important)
- preparing digital portfolios on CD
- my internet gallery (being constructed now)
- retouching and ordering enlarged prints from a digital minilab or making
inkjet prints.
- being able to send a ready-made file to a publisher instead of a neg or a
print.
As you can see a film scanner is going to be one of my basic tools for the
next several years. That' s why I'm in need for thorough knowledge about
film scanner and scanning, Photoshop 5.0, Dmax, white and black point, 14
bit colour, etc. Is anybody eager to point to me some 'educational' sites on
the net or write something personally?
I would be grateful if somebody did.

Thank you
