[filmscanners] Re: Polaroid 120 opinions
Maybe someone at Polaroid would know where he is. Usually, companies are hesitant to provide that information but maybe Polaroid would make an exception in this case. I sent a note to Larry Berman but he hasn't talked with him since the interview. Jim Arthur Entlich wrote: I tend to agree. I had hoped to be able to find him on some other type of list, even if it was just something like gardening, just to send an occasional hello, how are you doing, not to engage him in Polaroid or technical discussion. We had developed a rapport beyond the business matters over the period we were in communication. Art Laurie Solomon wrote: Art, I would also be interested in locating and re-establishing contact with David - especially concerning the Polaroid Film Recorder that I have and how one might get or create new lookup files for it that are dedicated to handling today's batch of films. However, I think that he dropped out of sight deliberately after leaving Polaroid. My impression was that he was getting sort of feed up with Polaroid's policies and practices vis-à-vis its customers and employees. I got the impression that, unlike you and I, David's involvement with online lists and forums was primarily a work related obligation and responsibility as opposed to a personal one or an advocational one. Thus, if he has left the industry, I doubt if he would still be involved with online lists. The Polaroid 120 is made by Microtek, and is discontinued as a Polaroid product to the best of my knowledge. If you are buying a new one make sure there is still a warranty program for it. Otherwise, look at the Microtek version. Or perhaps you are considering used ones. There were some minor problems with the film carriers. Otherwise, the unit was well rated. Art Alex Z wrote: Hi. I've sent simialr query to teh list about a week ago, for soem weird reason it didn't appear in the list at all, so I repeat. Some time ago I ventured into MF with 6x7 stuff, but of course, stuck with scanning. I used to scan my 35mm material by my Nikon LS-40 and was pretty much satisfied (of course, there are always things left to be desired). Now, quality scanning by lab is extremely expensive which leads me to criminal thuoghts about robbing some bank and acquiring a good desktop scanner for quality home scanning convenience. Nikon LS-9000 seems to be not bad but quite expensive approaching 2k$. The otyher contenders are either Minolta Multi or Polaroid 120. I've though quite rave things about Polaroid being more capable in terms of real dynamic range then Nikon 8000, however have never seen one myself. I'll be grateful for our opinions and experiences regarding mboth Minolta and Polaroid. Hi James, You are speaking of David Hemingway. Some time back, I tried to reconnect with him, but have not been able to locate him. After he left Polaroid he stopped communicating with me, so I have no news, unfortunately. He has a common name and so trying to Google him isn't easy. Art James L. Sims wrote: Alex, I have had a SprintScan 120 for a little over three years and am pleased with its performance. I have the glass 120 carrier, which I recommend. The unit locked up and had to go back to Polaroid shortly after I purchased it. I have had no problems since - knock wood! I purchased this unit because of the positive comments on this list and, at the time, there was a Polaroid rep commenting on this list. I can't remember his name but I was very impressed with his comments and conduct. Perhaps Art has had contact with him - if so, I'd like to know how he's doing. Art?
