Now with a few small additions and edits for clarity.

NB this is not currently indexed from my site menus as, like a bunch of
similarly hidden motorcycle features it is really off-topic for the site,
so the direct URL is the only way of finding it.

2002-06-07 Thread Arthur Entlich

I don't know the exact cause of your problem, and you didn't mention the
platform you are using.

Although your crashing is probably not caused by this, I would suggest
you remove Insight 5.0 and upgrade to version 5.5, which has a few extra
features (it is available on Polaroid's website). Also make sure you
are upgraded to the latest firmware version.

Then make sure that you are pointing the temp files to a location on
your drive with lots of space.

I suspect this will fix things. If not, please provide us with some
additional info (like platform, where the files are being written to, if
you are using the Photoshop TWAIN interface or the stand alone version,
etc.)

You didn't give much detail, only that you have plenty of ram and disk, but
what platform are you on, what version of what OS, etc.

Having asked that I would seriously suggest that you consider VueScan. I
use it with my SS4000 and prefer it over Insight and Silverfast. You might
also go on the Polaroid website to see if they have any updates to Insight
that you can install.

Bummer. I assume the new designs you refer to do NOT include either
the SS4000 Plus or the SS120 since they are already in production,
but rather a different as-yet-unannounced product.

Really? If so I must have missed it, and if true it's rather

The Plus should be available between mid January and mid February. Spec's
have been set for many months, unit is in production, firewire will be as
fast as SCSI, USB slower. I expect we will have no 35mm film scanners to
sell for 2 - 4 weeks as the 4000's have all left Polaroid.

I am also trying to buy a Sprintscan 4000 here in the UK. The Polaroid rep
here said the Plus had not yet been released "officially" and whether
it would be was still under discussion as the "market was so
competitive". He implied that the final product, if there was going to be
one, didn't have the final specifications set yet. This may just be
comments for the UK, but if it is more general the SS4000 could be sold
out before a final decision is made what will happen with the Plus.
Maybe David Hemingway could offer more information.

Personally I am more interested in a SCSI than a USB connection as it
sounds like it could be quicker but what do others find in this regard?

David,

This is a bit off topic, but can you give us a feel as to the impact of
having 14 bit A/D conversion instead of 12 bit per channel will be on
shadow and highlight detail, shadow noise, etc? Or will it just allow
us folks doing manipulations in 16 bit mode more latitude to stretch the
curves while doing corrections?

PS - Will the film carriers for the SS4000+ be compatible with my
current SS4000?

PS - PS - Any word on the availability of the bulk slide feeder/adapter
and/or panoramic holder (+software to use it)?

Thanks a bunch -

2001-12-31 Thread Lloyd O'Daniel

I know. I've had my SS4000 for 2 years and am happy. But (significant)
dynamic range improvement is probably the only reason I would upgrade short
of a scanner meltdown. I'm hoping/assuming that Polaroid is using the same
conservative methodology in rating the 120 and the Plus, ergo a real
improvement.

I did a quick test on a friend's SS120 and found that the same slide had
much better detail in highlights and shadows than obtained with my 4000.
Someone pointed out to me that here (and I meant to respond...life got in
the way) that the highlights should have been matched for a real test. I
really didn't have the time with the 120 to do anything other than automatic
scans with Insight on both scanners.

It's USB 1.1. Never seen an SS120, so I have nothing to compare. I'd bet it
was at least 3.9, as the SS4000 was very conservatively rated on Dynamic
range.

Tom

Is the USB on the SS4000+ USB 2.0 or 1.1?

Have you compared any scans from the Plus with the SS120? Do you know the
rated Dynamic Range of the Plus? I'm hoping it's 3.9 like the SS120, since
both are 14-bit systems. That would mean an extra 1-2/3 stops of range over
the 4000, which is substantial.

The Sprintscan plus is not yet on the market, but will be the
replacement for the SS4000. It will probably cost nearly twice as much
as current pricing on the SS4000. It has somewhat higher bit depth, and
a firewire or USB connection versus SCSI.

Remember, the SS4000+ is BOTH USB and Firewire. Clearly the Firewire
performance matches the SCSI performance.

Having had the opportunity to test the SS4000+, I have to say it is an
outstanding scanner, just as the SS4000 is. Right now, David is absolutely
right, though. The differences are small enough that it reinforces that the
SS4000 at the current prices is an outright steal. I paid over $1500 for my
SS4000 and am still pleased with the investment.

[filmscanners] Re: Polaroid Sprintscan 4000

2001-12-27 Thread Tom Scales

The Plus is Firewire and USB, while the base model is SCSI. Both the same
basic machine, same carriers, etc.

If I remember correctly, the base model is 12bits and the Plus is 14bits.

Side by side, you literally cannot see a difference.

Huge price difference.

Did the Plus ever get officially released?

I've seen references to both the Sprintscan 4000 and Sprintscan 4000 plus.
Does anyone know what (if any) the differences are between the two?

Thanks...

Plus = Firewire & USB No SSCSI; 14 bits
All in all at the current price of $500 - $550 after rebate the SS4000 is a
bargain!
