No, but there are major problems with list delivery right now, thanks to
ISP restrictions. Basically I am having to restrict list
distribution to one or two late-night blinks (in UK) when the mail
server is lightly loaded, to avoid having my kneecaps shot off.

Please just put up with it for now - I am trying to sort out a better
solution, but free and commercial list providers suddenly find they are
'too busy' once they realise the data volume is about 10Gb/m. They run
away screaming:)

I now have one quote and will probably go ahead later this week, though
it's Majordomo-based, which means opaque email admin, and no nice
integrated web front end (yes, I know about Majorcool, but they don't run
it).

Never let that worry you, it's a daily occurrence here in NI and so the
surgeons have become quite adept at fixing them. Even get you a good handful
of £££ in compensation :-) You always complaining about being short of the
readies, etc.

One thing though take the pain killers before, not after :-0

Tony, I don't understand why you don't just put the archive in one place and
move the list as of now to topica.com or somewhere where you can start
building a properly managed new archive. It would save everyone, but mainly
you, a lot of hassle. Your list traffic is FAR lower than many lists on
topica.

I second this suggestion. Topica seems ok.

With all the free services I manage to find something to dislike
- the ad-festooned sites and/or web-based admin (spit!) and/or ads
(die!e-groups) and/or lack of domain redirection
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and/or restricted archive space and/or
broken search routines and/or what is policy now may not be next week...
I'd rather stick it on a commercial server, on balance, if I can't host
it, and try and get it as I think it should be. I'm just picky, and a
control freak ;)

However it's all working OK again right now, thanks to a handy little bit
of s/w that does DNS cacheing. Which will at least give me the time to
sort something else out.

Personally I think mailing lists and web forums are utter, utter cr*p -
dreadfully clunky, wasteful of bandwidth and an all-round PITA both for
the listadmin and users. There are much better ways. The few other people
on this list who use CIX conferencing will know exactly what I mean, and
there are going to be developments there which I hope will provide a much
better mechanism.

It sounds like you're cutting off your nose to spite your face, Tony. I've
used topica to admin two lists with 400+ subscribers and major traffic --
plus a couple of other quieter lists -- for a year now and it's been
completely hassle free. Topica support is exemplary and the search function
works exactly as it should. There are no ads if you don't want them and the
site is banner free. List management is really easy. Lots of people choose
to read on the web, and they can have multiple email addresses and easily
choose to which address and by which method they will receive mail.

In the time that I've been on this list... nine months on and off... it has
*always* had problems. You say you're picky but you end up running an
extremely unreliable list whose burps and hiccups defeat the
call-and-response nature of most mailing lists. Huh??

On bandwidth, one teenager downloading Metallica from another uses up more
bandwidth than this entire forum.

This has been an unpaid announcement.

ps Egroups sucks the big kahuna.
